In case of interest, a quote from an interview in the Irish Times:
Religious motifs ripple through Prelude to Ecstasy: Abigail Morris (principle vocalist) and Lizzie Mayland, the band’s rhythm guitarist, were raised Catholic; on My Lady of Mercy and elsewhere, the former grapples with her tricky relationship with faith.
“It’s about having feelings for women as a woman and coming to terms with that growing up in a very Catholic family and school,” Morris told Dutch TV last year. “And having simultaneous feelings of excitement and discovering yourself - but also lots of shame and fear and guilt. I wrote it to try and free that part of me that was proud of it, exploring it through Catholic imagery rather than hiding from it. Using it for my own gain.”

AVAA Skye - love to see you pull your knowledge of French literature into your reviews! I'm also late to the party on this album, but you've definitely made me want to check it out!
P.S. as a brit - I approve of the term 'European Anglosphere' - that brit-pop/rock sound is definitely not exclusive to Britain, which had never crossed my mind! Great idea (hope it catches on) :)

Really enjoyed thinking about TLDP through the lens of de Beauvoir but feel you should be aware that the band tend to refer to themselves as a 'non-male' band as not all of them identify as female 😊

Thank you for that, I didn't know that.

AVAA! listening to you compare TLDP to Beauvoir made me think that they might be the female mirror to a band like IDLES, who are in my mind great examples of using "positive masculinity" to grow as men. TLDP in my (41 year old male) mind feel like a band expressing "positive femininity" to grow and teach others as women, and I hope they receive just as much (if not more) acclaim and notoriety as IDLES!

My theory on 'the last' is that it's a 'last supper' joke

*maybe? I dunno. 👆 just sounds more like a genre. The ‘European anglosphere’, while a pretty creative umbrella term, is quite a mouthful

I like it. Sounds like these ladies have been listening to a lot of St. Vincent. I noticed in one of their videos, the guitar player was even playing St. Vincent's signature guitars.Lead singer sounds a lot like her.

AVAA - Thanks as always Skye! Any recommendations for literature touching on language as a central theme in the way you describe in this video? I recently watched Past Lives, which delves in themes of immigration and language very similarly.

Charles Fourier coined the term 'feminism' in 1837. Google says the term feminist first appeared in France and the Netherlands in 1872, so Simone de Beauvoir was probably aware of the term
