  • Grandfather Mountain State Park is in the NorthWestern corner of North Carolina near Linville, along the Blue Ridge Parkway. This footage was taken on Friday, Oct-30th, 2015. After nearly a week of rain (courtesy to the remnants of Hurricane Patricia) a high pressure system brought one day of cloudless sky and clear air. Temperature was around 42F with frigid winds. Enjoy!

    I and I'm sure many others really miss flying hang gliders at Grandfather Mountain. Competing each year in the Master's of Hang Gliding tournament was unforgettable, the mountain, the friends from all over the world, the camaraderie, and yes, even the competition tasks and all the folks who officiated !!! Mr. Morton and his family were exceptionally wonderful hosts and dear, dear friends !!! We miss all ya'll !!!

    If you pause the video at the 1:31 mark and zoom in to the left part of the screen you can see people climbing the ladders on the rock parts. I took my drone on this trip but was told it was illegal to fly drones there so I didn’t take it with us on our hike from the profile trail to Callaway peak. I personally think that it being illegal to fly in national parks is ridiculous.

    Good ariel view! Only the mountain is too small and the visit will be over in literally half an hour.

      Hi Freddie, glad you like the video. At the time I was flying a DJI Phantom 3 Pro. Since upgraded to Phantom 4 and more recently added a Mavic 2.

    Curious, where did you launch from. I've thought about taking mine up there

    • @tlausser
      @tlausser  7 лет назад +1

      I launched right from the parking lot on the top of the road. In fact, you get a sense of it at the end of the video from the landing. I must emphasize, though, that it is privately managed property up there and I believe they do NOT allow flying drones on their property. So please inquire and find out if they will grant you permission...

      I thought about carrying it up to Callaway Peak in my backpack on the profile trail. Although once you get away from the swinging bridge area you are in state park property. Can't launch from the parkway because it is National Park Service property.

      Launching drones is prohibited in all National Parks. As for State Parks, it varies by state. It looks like NC also has a general rule that it is prohibited: www.ncparks.gov/park-rules
      Note that these restrictions don't apply to flying, just to launching and landing. The only agency which can restrict flying in any airspace in the US is the Federal Aviation Agency (FAA). Landowners or park services can prevent you from launching or landing on their property (as all National Parks do). In some cases you may be able to launch from a public place (road, waterway, etc.) and fly in the vicinity (as long as you have visual contact and respect the altitude limitation of 400ft and other restrictions).

      I've seen that. I've taken video of Chimney Rock Park before but I was filming from down in the village so didn't launch from inside. But totally within line of sight haha

    Great shots and perfect music!! I've been wanting to make an aerial video there but figured I would get shut down. Did of the State Park Employees say anything about you flying there? What are you flying? Thanks for sharing!

    • @tlausser
      @tlausser  9 лет назад +2

      +Jamie Hastings I'm flying a Phantom 3 Pro. Nobody said anything. It's actually not a State Park, but a privately managed property. Only later did I find out that you have to obtain permission prior to flying by contacting their Communications team on their website. I reached out to them after finding this out, but haven't heard back.
      If you want to fly up there, you should reach out to them. Others are granted permission as well, such as this one: ruclips.net/video/1AoLCPefAZY/видео.html
