Something I learned years ago for making ruffling. Just pull the bobbin thread long enough for the length of the fabric. Lay it on the fabric seam line and zigzag over that thread. Now when you pull the thread to ruffle the fabric, one end is secured because it’s the bottom thread. Works really well nice.

In the first case you don't have to use a jar. Near the place where your thread spool was there is a hole - it is made specifically for larger thread spool. All you have to do is to attach the spool pin vertically, the additional spool pin usually goes with a sewing machine

У большой катушки отверстие внутри большого диаметра, она не будет держаться на тонкой палочке. Продают специальные насадки для этих катушек, а если такой насадки нет, банка - неплохой вариант.

Spools that are wrapped in a cross hatch pattern - like both those spools shown in the beginning - are supposed to be pulled from the top (hence the reason the small spool was laying on its side on the horizontal support). The large spool has to be pulled from the top also (keeps the thread from tangling). So the spool cannot go on the vertical support. Spools that are wrapped without the cross hatch pattern are pulled from the side and go on the vertical suport

The 1st hack--the thread in the jar--was kick a**! I've been looking for this one! I even had a s/steel lined coffee mug (can't use in the microwave) that I attached to a magnet for my commercial machine, and it's saved me oodles of time and frustration. Saying thanks ❤ w/likes.😊

“Problem” nr 4: You can avoid thread bunching with even more simple trick, always hold the thread ends when you start to sew, just for couple stitches. This is like the very first stuff youre told when learning to sew, so this shouldnt be a problem in the first place. If your book or teacher neglects to tell this, you need to find better ones!

    • @itsjoannotjoann5070
      @itsjoannotjoann5070 Год назад +9

I was always taught to have a light grasp on those threads when starting but if the take up lever is in its' highest position the needle will also be in its' highest position. Sewing can begin in this position and this, too, will eliminate 'thread nests.'

@@itsjoannotjoann5070 I used to be an arts&crafts teacher for adults, and this little info bit wasnt common knowledge, I learned. I was amazed, its such easy (and to me very obvious) way to avoid several problems. Same was with leaving everything pointing up, like you wisely added. Because its like second nature to me, took me longer than it shouldve to figure out what was going on, when I was new at my job. When my students told they knew the basics, I learned to suspect there might be holes in their knowledge. And it made me aware of how important it is to explain why we do things the certain way, it helps a lot when you know why youre holding on to the threads :)

That's the way I was taught, too. However, when I use the cut feature on my machine, the bottom thread is very short. As a quilter, I always have scraps laying about, so they become leaders. Just easier for me these days than fusible for bobbin threads. And ... gotta save that inch of thread! Lol

WORD OF CAUTION! LEARN FROM MY MISTAKE DONG THIS.......One thing I already do is put my big spools of thread in a jar and feed it over, but be careful where you put the jar. I had it on the end of the machine and the wheel caught it and wound it around the inside of my machine. Now, I put the jar to the back and wrap it around the pop up lid ...like she had it in the beginning.

Oh wow, this makes me cry remembering how Mom taught her little girl ❤️ to sew and knew all the tricks of a great seamstress and knitter; self-taught, she was so fast at all her crafts, and would whip up all matching shirts and pants and sweaters by hand, for her family before she got her Singer. She had so much energy and always made time for each of us; she was so maternal and loved us so much! We were the luckiest 4 kids! Mom knitted in a way so efficiently that she could produce many toques and beanies, gloves and socks for homeless people. It was so enjoyable to take Mom and her knitted items to the street and hand them out. Mom was an amazing woman and gorgeous as can be and I miss her terribly every day! A hospital in Arizona killed my Momma with the death protocol 14 months ago; took her beautiful life with a lethal dose of drugs and intentional harm. 💔
This video brought back some beautiful memories of what Mom knew and loved to teach. Thank you; we all need to be grateful for the beautiful people in our lives! ❤️❤️

Some observations in using a lidded jar for cone thread:
    1. If the the hole in the lid isn't smooth enough it can snag the thread making it weaker, preventing it from fully being pulled out of the container possible causing it to break.
    2. Because the thread being pulled out of a tiny hole in a lid and rubbing along the sewing machine body, it could cause tension issues.
    3. If you place the lidded container in the same place each time, it's well known the thread will wear grooves on the plastic sewing machine body - it's why manufacturers put metal pieces wherever the thread passes continuously, to prevent grooves in the plastic and why upright spool holders are available for most sewing machines. Or why a stand alone, heavier, countertop spool holder is preferable.
Great idea if the hole in the lid is smooth enough and this technique isn't done too often.
Needles in a pen - there's nothing keeping the needles from coming out. If the pen gets knocked off a table and onto the ground, how many needles will come out? If someone needs a pen and grabs it with the nib facing down to write, how many needles will drop out of it? How many needles could land on a person's foot or in carpet? Not a smart idea. However, if you used a pen with a cap - brilliant idea!
Using pinking shears in place of notching curves is well known among sewists - I discovered it because it was in one of my sewing books.
Doing gathers the way you've shown - my sewing books also have this method. They discuss using dental floss and yarn in place of regular sewing thread.
You aren't using a pressing cloth on the shiny fabric (appears to be velveteen) when adding the hemming tape. In your video you are ironing on the inside where it won't show but it's a good idea to learn to use a pressing cloth on napped fabrics to prevent iron marks on the fabric. Some hem tapes don't stretch, using them on stretchy fabric can prevent the fabric from moving correctly and can eventually cause the tape to fail. You should put somewhere in your video to use the correct type of hem tape.
Cute shirt panel with the pleats and lace.
I've been enjoying your videos for a long time but this go around you missed the mark on a couple of things - some new sewists won't know they could be making problems for themselves by following what you've shown in this video.

Youre spot on with the lid & spool-thing (and other things). Im thinking putting an small eyelet on the lid hole should help, but still you need to be aware where you place the jar, so the thread wont start making a groove on the plastic panels.

    • @meacadwell
      @meacadwell Год назад +1

@@janemiettinen5176 Yes, part of a grommet could help - maybe glue it on? Or you could just save yourself the trouble and get a commercial spool holder - they aren't expensive. And then you don't have to worry about getting grooves in your machine.

The method to make the wee drawstring bag starting at 4’48” is genius. A few of the other tips worry me though! Especially using a glass jar for a thread stand. Sticking the cone in a sturdy mug at the back of the machine works just as well, anyway. And I agree with another comment about storing needles in a ballpoint pen!

1.What a long way round using a large spool, you simply put the spindles in the hole beside the bobbin winder, this is specifially for larger spools , if needeput a small empty spool on then the large on top.
    2. The navy neck you need to iron to set the stitches, then you need to iron the seam allowances apart then you cut if needed, it will get you a better finish.
    3. Red fabric, easily solved by threading your needle correctly, and as you have not reveresed the stitch it can become undone. If this still does not work, hold your thread when beginning.
    4. Neck opening, reinforcing is a good idea, that many thicknesses of fabric are not, also if you this a lot the gum from the double sided tape will gum up your needle, clean occasionally with nai varnish remover, a good tipp when you use anything sticky, although strictly speakin we were taught to use a new needle for each project.
    5. Triple stitch gathering is a good idea, although only works on very fine material, far finer than you are using.
    6. Bag is well done
    7. Velvet collar, no need for this, you have not understitched, when you have attached the collar, you then stich the seam both thickness to the facing, this will ensure that the facing ALWAYS rolls to the inside.
I am sure you make lots of beautuful things, but it is obvious that you are self, which is great, but it does mean that you have missed out on understanding some basics, the understitching being an example.

JP - we don’t all have special machines with this extra hole you speak of. For us with cheaper machines tip number 1 is very helpful.

Also I think it unwise to be trimming material right next to the inner parts of the machine as this causes build-up of lint/dust that clogs the machine.
