Omg I cannot take college romances seriously... Like I've BEEN to college. I've lived in dorms with these nasty boys. What makes you a bad boy, pissing on the toilet seat on the girls floor because you're too lazy to go downstairs?
I actually love the way the Cruel Prince did enemies to lovers because Jude and Carden were both shitty people and constantly manipulated and back stabbed each other. I feel like most authors don’t know what having an enemy actually feels like
Reason why I hate the "he was in love with her the whole time" thing is because it screams "he's only mean to you because he likes you". Telling kids that has always been so icky to me and having it seep into later reading material is a bit eesh
Unpopular opinion but i really do hate the "hes been in love with her all yhis time" that really just takes away the funny transformation of hate to love and for some reason its always the guy secretly in love. Cant you change it and make it the girl sometimes? Also most enemies to lovers is just lust, sexual attraction painted as love. I came here to read a romance, give me a meaningful relationship. If i wanted to read smut, I'd pick up a erotica.
Besides the "he's been in love the whole time" makes the dude really toxic, like why would you treat the other like that if you love them? The great part of the enemies to lovers is the journey of them slowly falling for each other WITHOUT realizing they're in love, and growing to treat each other better (more like rivals than enemies). They take the spice out of the trope.
@@rhymerlegend2717I don't like Nesta or any of the three sisters in Acotar but they still deserve better than the bat boys. Cassian especially is a piece of shit, he's going to be that alpha male podcaster who talks about gym and getting girls.
@@gd_cffnfr they take the easy route in everything. I hate that trope because it just makes the man so...vanilla. the whole point of enemies to lovers is to watch them slowly fall in love, not have one party already in love. The transformation doesn't feel satisfying then. And he also becomes a bully. Not always bc sometime he just is a playful rival but most of the time it's a grown man bullying a woman bc he's interested in her and he makes it her problem. Pride and prejudice in my opinion does this trope the best. Mr. Darcy wasn't bullying her, nor was he always secretly in love with her. He just acted like a jerk once, realized his mistake and fell in love with Lizzie after that. Especially since it's a big deal in the book to get back on his good grace, it feels so satisfying to watch him like her. The book also doesn't have Darcy treat her like shit afterwards, he tries interacting with her and engaging in conversations about things she likes. These book boys could never 😂
The "writing for people who started reading in 2020" thing is EXACTLY WHAT I'VE BEEN THINKING omg. I couldn't put my finger on why all these Booktok books kind of felt like baby's first literary analysis kind of stuff, but that actually hits the nail on the head-- because some of it IS for baby's first literary analysis.
i feel like enemies-to-lovers only works when there’s a clear difference between their moral beliefs and principles. when they influence each other to grow and be accepting of new ideas. when they learn from the relationship and become better people, or at the very least have some understanding of the other’s perspective.
Jude and Cardan are peak enemies to lovers, Holly Black really understands the concept. I feel like other authors should take notes on how to make a great enemies to lovers story. Enemies to lovers is my favorite trope because it’s just entertaining to see people beef with each other and then end up falling in love😂
No because Cardan was my enemy I hated him and then next thing I know I’m like okay he can be a lover. It helped that Jude got more morally ambiguous than him lol. Like honestly she got worse as he got better till they met in the middle.
Enemies to Lover don't need to try and kill one another. BUT! They must have real animosity. Using Fourth Wing as an example, there is tension, but at no point are they enemies, they are rivals. At the very best they are rivals. Having someone captured as a prisoner of war, that is an enemy. But all too often, some people treat mild annoyance as enemies to lovers. Xaden at no point is attempting to kill her or even hinder her. All he does is help her. If you're going to do Enemies to Lovers, make them at least ideologically opposed. Even if they aren't enemies like the opposite sides of a war, make them have conflicts where the arguments comes to blows at least.
I feel like the closest closest way enemies to lovers can work in a contemporary series is rivals to lovers. It's why I love Ana Liang constantly kills it with her books, hit after hit. Her last one I Hope This Doesn't Find You was pure perfection. It can also work in a workplace setting, where both characters are gunning for the top position, but the execution needs to be good and believable Another good example of hate to love was The Cruel Prince because both Jude and Cardan despised how they felt for each other, which made it so addicting to watch.
The Timekeeper's Secret - Timeless Fate Series also does it extremely well. Its an enemies to lovers slow burn and nothing at the beginning is what you think. Vibes similar to Cruel Prince too!
The Jasad Heir is a true genuine enemies to lovers book. And you know it’s gonna be good when newer romantasy readers accuse the book of being “boring and too slow burn” and that’s The Jasad Heir
as a writer, i understand what you're saying. it can be hard to navigate in this market now because everyone wants the romance quickly. like my characters HATE each other. and they have a reason to. so like. i don't know
As an avid fanfic reader I will never understand this. I thrive on slow burns, so my first dips into the romance genre were basically a culture shock. Just keep doing what youre doing. There is a market for slow burn romances and it's better to cater towards your niche rather than try to please everyone.
@@ettaetta439 that's kind of how i'm writing it. i don't want to write my story to please the market. if i get rejected, there's always self publishing so i don't mind
in my opinion, the secret sauce to a good enemies to lovers is equality. equality in both the characters’ hatred for each other and the level to which they express that hatred; if she’s never done anything to him but he goes out of his way to torment her at any given opportunity, they’re not enemies, he’s just abusive. these bitches need to DESPISE each other and they BOTH need to show it. equality in the validity of their hatred; doesn’t matter if they actually have a good reason for hating each other or not, it needs to be the same level of real. either they both hate each other for no reason or they both have very real reasons for wanting the other dead. i dont like it when there’s very clearly a correct party but the author expects us to pretend that they both have a side. also it’s just more interesting if you can see where both of them are coming from. i also appreciate when there’s also equality in how much they each have to grow / change to get together. unfortunately i often encounter one character (usually the woman, surprise surprise) having to entirely change while the other doesn’t make any alteration in attitude or behavior. also, im sorry if they liked each other all along they are NOT enemies.
Exactly!! The leads can't be true enemies if one side remains on the moral high ground and is just getting bullied. Let both sides commit ugly and petty acts cause that's what hatred brings out in people. The whole power dynamic thing makes it an oppressor to lovers
I used to love the enemy to lovers troupe but now I can't stand them. They're always technically on different sides of a war or conflict or competing against each other, they meet MMC always falls in love with the FMC instantly for who knows what reason but he's snarky and sassy for "banter" and the FMC is dumb and can't tell he's in love with her. Until at the end of book 1 he does a big sacrifice and then she has a "omg he loves me and I love him" OR they fall in love but he "betrays" her at the end of book 1 but turns out she's been lied to her whole life and the MMC is on the right side of whatever and they fall in love again in book 2 yay 🙃 I'm tired
Thank you for this insight, as a writer I’ll attempt a different approach 😃💛 ps I’m tired of almost all fiction altogether so this will be a tough one to write
- Jude and Cardan - Nina and Matthias (literally enemies by nature. Grisha and Grisha hunter) - Selwyn and Bree (he really did hate her/ try to kill her at the start) - Katniss and Peeta (not fantasy, and this could be debated, but as tributes they were forced to be enemies, Katniss really hated him at a few points even in the Mockingjay book) - Alastair and Gavin🌈 (All of Us Villains duology. They deserve more hype...these two REALLY tried to kill one another) Some of my book favs that actually HATED each other at one point. Real enemies to lovers try to kill each other😊
So often I feel like enemies to lovers is basically “creepy abusive non relationship to lovers” and I’m just not here for it. Or it’s like “the genocidal monarch has actually wanted to sleep with the heroine this whole time because he’s been fantasizing about her and now they are in a relationship where he kills everyone but her” It’s like a lot of authors have forgotten that it is possible for people to be enemies for reasons that aren’t fundamentally an abusive power dynamic or something that should legitimately disqualify a person from ever being your partner lmao
Honestly, I do love the fight over ideals and whatnot. Two people who stand on different sides and still fight for what they believe in, regardless of their feelings for each other. The respect they gain for each other through their fights and everything
I'm glad you mentioned Holly Black's book because I have a lot of faith in her as a writer (I grew up on Tithe and Spiderwick) and my heart dropped when I saw Cruel Prince in the thumbnail 😅
I hate when people are like, "your enemy is in love with you and gives you his hoodie blablablab" 1) that's not enemies 2) where's the middle point? a good enemies to lovers is enemies to friends to lovers
3:40 LMAO I agree with you that this trope in contemporary should mainly be in YA cause having a college or workplace enemy is NOT as fun as the books make it out to be, it's very stressful and life-altering (not in a sexy way) ps love your hair pps hbd
I think we have opposite taste because I hate enemies to lover but I love friends to lovers. I feel like enemies to lovers is just unrealistic (yes I realize that it’s just a story) and it doesn’t feel like genuine love when they finally get together, whereas if they start out as friends, it feels more genuine and when the two characters finally get together it’s like releasing a breath you didn’t know you were holding in
First off, Happy Birthday! Secondly, I enjoyed this video and agree with everything you said. It seems like nowadays authors are just lazy with the enemies to lovers trope, and I think that’s because they don’t know how to effectively progress the relationship between the two characters. It takes a lot more work to get characters to go from hating to loving one another instead of just having them sort of dislike each other and then becoming lovers. For me, if the book is enemies to lovers I expect it to always be on sight between the two of them until they inevitably have to start working together 😂
Happy Birthday!! Your hair is so pretty! I love that the book trope analysis series is continuing. I'm sad about the Acolyte, I was going to watch it if it got a season 2 but as I feared it got cancelled. Since you said season 1 stands well on its own, I think I'll watch it when I need an enemies to lovers kick instead of reading it because the current books are lacking. I genuinely hate when they develop feelings within the first 20%, what happened to the 'reluctant comrades' stage in between the enemies and lovers part. That part is so crucial because it allows the characters to truly see each other's flaws and uglier sides in a neutral way, and that means they understand each other on a deeper level and then they can build romance off of that. When the guy loves her from the beginning especially when they have just met, I'm sitting there thinking you don't even know her... I think I dislike modern day enemies to lovers because it's just poorly written insta-love and there's nothing to love.
Another true enemies to lovers book I've found recently is The Jasad Heir. It's the first book in a series and I was actually really scared of it disappointing me cause so many enemies to lovers books really have not been actual enemies to lovers but the Jasad Heir really pulled it off. Both of them try to kill each other multiple times and it's a lot of fun!
The thing about Reckless is, it can be really interesting when one character has a complete misunderstanding of another. It works really well and makes for some delicious dramatic irony in A Taste of Gold and Iron. It can also be used for comedy like in the first Wheel of Time book, where all three protagonists have moments where they're like "I wish the other character was here; he knows how to talk to girls."
the poppy war has really good enemies to lovers. genuine, trying to murder each other, opposite sides of the war, physically and emotionally harming each other life-and-death level of enemies
Is it really etl? I've read the first 2 books and took a break after that because the second book broke me (that was a year ago already) and I haven't been able to finish the series since then. Also, i'm pretty sure it doesn't have a happy ending either 😞
@@reekaren2609you’re right I fear 😢 BUT thankfully there is hundreds of fanfics of them to sate the desire for a happy ending and enemies to lovers. But I do feel like the poppy war properly does ‘enemies’ while many books use the term where the characters are never even rivals yk
tbh i think the reason they stop being enemies so fast in so many of these booktok books, is because they want more time to put smutty scenes in. like, if they only get together halfway through, that's half the book without any smut (i guess??)
I'm so with you on Time War! I think most of the best enemies to lovers are systemic - which is why I don't think they work in contemporary romance. In Time War, if they meet, they straight up are going to have to kill each other. It's that ✨drama✨ and urgency and violence that is missing from contemporary romance enemies to lovers in my opinion. They're usually just rivals or just crabby at each other lol.
i loved fourth wing but I KID YOU NOT it definitely was categorized improperly but i also don’t know if ill read the second one. when you talked about how authors just try to rush plot i feel like that’s what happens with blood trials, inheritance games, deadly education the first books are sufficient. book tok is nice but writing definitely feels inorganic and unauthentic. look at the turnaround of books. like honey pls wRITE A GOOD BOOK
One of my issues with enemies to lovers is that it is rarely done well. People don't usually put in the time for the development of the relationship and feelings themselves and just kind of rush to the romance instead. And as a result it somehow feels both predictable and like it came out of nowhere. Plus, like you said, plenty of authors constructs these books full of popular tropes, and there is this very particular group of tropes that has now been ruined for me because now I see these tropes of signs that I would dislike this book (think pairing enemies to lovers with morally grey love interest, bad boy, etc. You know the ones). I am pretty sure Red and Blue is the only instance of an enemies to lovers in a book that I loved (unless we count Nina and Hanne from King of Scars as enemies to lovers, which I do not). That being said, even though I am not a romance person, I much prefer rivals to lovers. I think maybe it is the mix of frustration, ambition and competition that makes rivalry so much more fun for me to read. I don't care about the to lovers part to be honest, but the rivalry itself is fun. With enemies to lovers they are just on opposite sides and that's it. There is no appeal for me there for the most part. Even when it is largely agreed it was done well, I usually do still disagree so I do think it is not just the writers but something to do with the trope itself.
@@b1_1nnies I can see that being the case. I was going to say as 'As I said I am not a romance reader' but apparently I didn't actually mention that. I enjoy academic books so that is usually what I get rivals in. I have no idea if would like it outside of that and I am trying to picture it and it is not coming off good.
im glad you praised the folk of the air series for their enemies to lovers 10:38 i was gonna mention it if you didnt 😆 i had a feeling you would like it lol
I'm writing a high-school rivals to lovers/forbidden romance, for fun lol, and it starts off with the LI saving the MC from the antagonist (who she owes money to). The MC is rude to him initially because she's a hyper-independent person (this is due to her becoming the bread-winner for her family at a young age after her step-father passed away) and prides herself on being able to handle things by herself. Eventually, she does apologize but the LI walks off. They later meet each other at school when the MC gets a transitional scholarship to his boarding school (its a private school full of elite kids she can't relate to). They both recognize each other and the LI is still salty about her being rude (despite her apologizing). During their first lesson, the LI sees how intelligent the MC is and feels threatened (as he's the top of his class - due to having very strict parents who would punish him for even getting a A rather than an A*) the two start an argument in class about the interpretation of a piece of text. The teacher validates both of their views and the LI doesn't like this and this starts their academic rivalry. On the MC's end, the only reason why she's beefing with him is because he ignored her second apology to him (after the class where they debated) so she starts being rude back, purposefully debating him in lessons or pointing out his mistakes just to get under his skin. Eventually, the MC sees the LI looking at the school alumni wall (he's looking at a photo of his parents who were once students at that specific school). The MC sees this and asks him why he's looking at the photos. He tells her that they're his parents and he's looking at the photos to remind him of what he has to aspire to (become a lawyer just like them - even though he doesn't want to - he feels like he has to). He then apologizes to the MC and the two become cordial. They eventually become friends when the LI takes the MC to the nurse after she passes out due to stress (academic and financial as again she's the bread-winner for her family). They eventually become friends and eventually start to develop feelings but aren't open due to objections from their friends and family. The LIs friends and family think she's in a lower social class and the MCs friend (who once dated one of the LIs friends) thinks he's a bad person after an incident that happened and the MCs mother thinks she should just use him for money, as she's 16 and she wants her daughter to focus on her education so that she can get a career and lighten the financial burden. Because of this, they continue to be friends with moments that teeter onto 'romantic relationship'. Eventually, they do confess their feelings, but again due to external objections, don't get into a full-blown public relationship, keepings things private. Towards the end though, after a scary incident, everyone becomes more understanding of their relationship and become more accepting. That's just the main outline, a lot more stuff goes down lol (as the side characters are just as important as the main). But I watched this video to see how I can improve it. If anyone in the comments, who's reading this, would like to critique some things or suggest improvements PLEASE FEEL FREE! I'd love to find ways to improve this and produce a really good story (even if I don't publish lol) 😂.
If I am being honest...it feels like I have read similar stories. Most aspects of the outline, I am already familiar with. But I don't mind reading something familiar/cliche if it is good. Plus authors obviously get inspired by other authors, so a completely original piece of writing is impossible. But I still have to say, maybe make the story a little less predictable? As I said, some aspects of the plot have been done before a lot. So I suggest you add your own layer or twist to it. And as much as I don't mind reading a familiar/cliche concept, I would really like it better if it were different than the usual :)
@@ariae000 Okay. This is just the main character and love interests outline, like I said the side characters have just as big of a role in this and this isn't the main plot (I have over 100 pages of notes and outlines for many aspects of the story which will hopefully make it less cliché). I just need help with making their rivals to lovers realistic. Thanks for your advice though, I'll keep that in mind 🤍
Honestly!! It genuinely upsets me that everyone number one, thinks this is enemies to lovers, and two, thinks this is genuinely good literature. The comprehension leveles must be at an all time low or something 😭
I also feel you on Star Wars. I initially avoided the fandom coz of how... white and het it was, not to mention all the Asian cultural aspects when no Asians were around. I dabbled with Rogue One and the 2 The Force Awakens movies, but the amount of racism I witnessed directed toward the bipoc actors was disappointing, to say the least. Sad to hear it's still the same.
i ALWAYS thought it was weird that it takes heavily from asian cultures but barely has any asian characters, that’s why it took me years to even get in to it, now they have an asian character as a love interest and then cancelled the show like wow 🙄
Commenting again, I also think a big problem with enemies to lovers that I see sometimes is that one or both of the characters will dehumanize the other in ways where it makes them (the pov character) actually seem evil, but then they also just want to bang and that doesn’t really make it any better and it isn’t “love”. Like it’s one thing for the characters to be “enemies” because of circumstance, but I feel like them being able to become lovers should come from the fact that they fundamentally see each other as human beings and have lines they won’t cross even with an enemy, and then circumstances change or they make decisions that allow them to have a relationship that grows and isn’t fundamentally just wrong
Girrrl I feel you with the deadly education series, I LOVED the first two but the third one kinda flopped, it took me months to finish it 😩 btw new subscriber, you’re so funny and I feel like we have the same taste in books 🫶🏼
'If you could see the Sun' by Ann Liang was so good and 'This time, it's real' is not really enemies to lovers but it's so sweet like that is how you write a romance novel not some piece of garbage. Actually, mangas and manhwas are the best when you want romance stuff.
I don't think people dislike 2 characters hating on each other. I think they dislike the writing trying SO HARD to make 2 people hating each other over nothing. Feel like cheap imitation of "enemies" to lover
Happy birthday! I’m an enemies to lovers hater down (to my core) and one thing I noticed is that it can rely too heavily on insta-love. Like character A falls and somehow character B falls immediately after without hesitation. All the “no I shouldn’t” girl then don’t. Also yeah the hate is either one side or not there at all. 2 characters being on opposite sides of the fence but have no ill will to each other are not enemies at all.
I don't see many examples for true enemies to lovers in the comments, emphasizing your point,- it's so rare to have this trope done right. It's my favourite trope, so you can imagine I'm always let done by false marketing
I find the trope more interesting when its rivals to lovers (but still rivals just in a healthy way) For example, in the Chinese novel Journey to the West, the powerful Monkey King Sun Wukong has a rival, Erlang the Sacred Divinity. Both have equal sets of powers, hates the heavenly government, and can go all out in a duel, no holding back. In the novel, their rivalry isn't the main focus BUT in the video game, in the English and Chinese dub, Erlang reflects on his rival and says things like "None could push me the way he could!", "There must be something or someone you can't let go of. Its the same for me.", and "Each day you aren't here, I miss you" maybe its not romantic but you can feel the longing and lamentation in those lines. Either way, its compelling and interesting. The enemies to lovers in some of the books I've read just.. fall flat. They don't hit the mark.
Happy birthday!!🎉 And I do agree that a lot of books that are advertised as enemies to lovers lack the essence that makes the trope so loved. Either making it a lazy cop out or a rushed job. Though, I'm curious: What is/is there a name for a trope where Character A hates Character B but B doesn't necessarily hate A but doesn't like them either? Whether it be due to A not personally affecting B or outside situations make it where A can't like them.
I see the appeal of the enemies to lovers trope, especially if its a romeo/juliet medieval setting, I always eat that up. But my problem with it, besides from being over use a lot, is that the author relies heavily on it in terms of carrying the story and tends to forget other factors of the story, especially in fantasy (*cough* worldbuilding *cough*). Thats why regardless of genre, I prefer slow burn because it gives time to build the characters' relationship with one another and kind of see their complexities, as individuals, while also rooting for them in the process. Which is incredibly fruitful feeling in in my opinion. Hopefully it makes sense, also enemies to lovers usually consist of the same formula, atleast spice it up a bit, get rid of the heteronormativity lol.
tbh sometimes i love it when the trope is like he's been in love w her the whole time and she hates him bc of xyz reasons... bc it feels like you're in on a secret when the guy is all concerned and caring for her but she's like oh he's just trying to get something out of me in her head.... im talking if you could see the sun but yea that doesn't work all the time
14:05 LMAO NO FR i'm dying to know if you've read the poppy war bc rin and nezha have the REALLL enemies to lovers. she's violent on purpose, they have solid reasons, and they ACTUALLY try to kill each other. it's SCARY. (i'm also only like 40% in and have genuinely no idea if they'll end up together, which is lowkey the best way to read it lol)
seeing contemporary books labelled as enemies to lovers is always wild to me because i agree, enemies for me have to have hate/strong dislike for each other, or if it's fantasy/political drama, they're on opposing sides (i haven't watched the Acolyte but i'm assuming that's how it is, the guy is a sith and the protagonist is a jedi or something?) i think a lot of enemies to lovers in contemporary settings is really just rivals to lovers - like rival business owners, rival academics, opposing sports teams, etc. and if they are REALLY enemies, as you said, it's giving weird. like this guy in your office wanted to kill you and now y'all in love?? 🤔 also i was about to be like "omg i love friend to lovers 😡" but i think i agree, the ships i like tend to be childhood friends to lovers lol. definitely subscribing, love your energy & your hair! and happy belated birthday!
The Timekeeper's Secret - Timeless Fate Series has the perfect enemies to lovers. It's enemies to lovers slow burn and actually done very naturally and well
The captive prince is literally perfect in this regard since one of the MC is literally the slave of the other MC and their relationship develops really well throughout the trilogy
Hey, I'm happy to hear Acolyte works OK as a standalone. From what I've heard from my favourite star wars creators (who aren't the man babies obsessed with skin colour and genitals 😂) they're not very impressed with the writing, which sucks because it would be great to have a good quality product starring women of colour. But I haven't actually seen it. I will watch something to form my own opinion, but not if it's been cancelled because I HATE unfinished stories. If you say it wraps up quite nicely, then I will actually watch it now so thank you 😊
PLEASE make a video about class difference/forbidden love trope (I know they're 2 different things but they can be on the same boat depending on the plot) like if you have a royal and a low low class and their love is completely looked down upon or even worse not ALLOWED royal laws wise what do you think + i LOVE love your hair you did lovely girl >
Okay but hear me out, strangers to lovers, everything about that makes should make them avoid each other but the situation calls for an unlikely partnership whether that means getting a job or survival, and through that they learn mkre about the other past the outside. I love strangers to lovers when it's written like that
I would be very glad if someone helped me. I want to read a novel or story that has suspense, romance, and mystery. The female lead is very insecure but loves the main lead and vice versa. The second lead also loves her so much selflessly and secretly but she never notices his love.

@@gd_cffnexactly! Like you think bullying her is really gonna make her want to date you?!

He just acted like a jerk once, realized his mistake and fell in love with Lizzie after that. Especially since it's a big deal in the book to get back on his good grace, it feels so satisfying to watch him like her.
It can also work in a workplace setting, where both characters are gunning for the top position, but the execution needs to be good and believable
Another good example of hate to love was The Cruel Prince because both Jude and Cardan despised how they felt for each other, which made it so addicting to watch.
The Timekeeper's Secret - Timeless Fate Series also does it extremely well. Its an enemies to lovers slow burn and nothing at the beginning is what you think. Vibes similar to Cruel Prince too!
Nina and Matthias are true enemies to lovers. Literally.
YES some Helnik love over here!!❤
How are you gonna be a bad boy in college. Grow up get a job 😭😭😭😭 also your hair looks gorgeous I’m obsessed
The Jasad Heir is a true genuine enemies to lovers book. And you know it’s gonna be good when newer romantasy readers accuse the book of being “boring and too slow burn” and that’s The Jasad Heir
@@vanessagamooreads 'Too slow burn' Crazy 😭😭
as a writer, i understand what you're saying. it can be hard to navigate in this market now because everyone wants the romance quickly. like my characters HATE each other. and they have a reason to. so like. i don't know
As an avid fanfic reader I will never understand this.
Until at the end of book 1 he does a big sacrifice and then she has a "omg he loves me and I love him" OR they fall in love but he "betrays" her at the end of book 1 but turns out she's been lied to her whole life and the MMC is on the right side of whatever and they fall in love again in book 2 yay 🙃
I'm tired
Thank you for this insight, as a writer I’ll attempt a different approach 😃💛 ps I’m tired of almost all fiction altogether so this will be a tough one to write

- Jude and Cardan
- Nina and Matthias (literally enemies by nature. Grisha and Grisha hunter)
- Selwyn and Bree (he really did hate her/ try to kill her at the start)
- Katniss and Peeta (not fantasy, and this could be debated, but as tributes they were forced to be enemies, Katniss really hated him at a few points even in the Mockingjay book)
- Alastair and Gavin🌈 (All of Us Villains duology. They deserve more hype...these two REALLY tried to kill one another)
Some of my book favs that actually HATED each other at one point. Real enemies to lovers try to kill each other😊
So often I feel like enemies to lovers is basically “creepy abusive non relationship to lovers” and I’m just not here for it. Or it’s like “the genocidal monarch has actually wanted to sleep with the heroine this whole time because he’s been fantasizing about her and now they are in a relationship where he kills everyone but her”
It’s like a lot of authors have forgotten that it is possible for people to be enemies for reasons that aren’t fundamentally an abusive power dynamic or something that should legitimately disqualify a person from ever being your partner lmao
I hate when people are like, "your enemy is in love with you and gives you his hoodie blablablab"
1) that's not enemies
2) where's the middle point? a good enemies to lovers is enemies to friends to lovers
3:40 LMAO I agree with you that this trope in contemporary should mainly be in YA cause having a college or workplace enemy is NOT as fun as the books make it out to be, it's very stressful and life-altering (not in a sexy way)
ps love your hair

You're hair is so pretty. You did a great job!

11:03 yes they don’t let plots simmer and build they just want to get to certain scenes and it leaves the relationship lacking in my opinion
I think we have opposite taste because I hate enemies to lover but I love friends to lovers. I feel like enemies to lovers is just unrealistic (yes I realize that it’s just a story) and it doesn’t feel like genuine love when they finally get together, whereas if they start out as friends, it feels more genuine and when the two characters finally get together it’s like releasing a breath you didn’t know you were holding in
enemies to lovers (hate to love) is always super realistic to me because if a man says one wrong thing then i immediately hate him
@@myocoree REAL
I absolutely do love your hair 🥰🫶🏻 super cute
I didn't know it has enemies-to-lovers, up in my TBR books. Her new novel (Katabasis) is gonna be in 2025 has two academic rivals.
@@Space.Panda1805 they're academic rivals in this one too! but its less cute fluffy romance and more wartime bloodshed etc
Your hair looks SO good, omg better than i have seen professionals do it
YOUR HAIR IS ICONIC AND HAPPY BIRTHDAY
The show The Great is a fantastic example of enemies to lovers
tbh i think the reason they stop being enemies so fast in so many of these booktok books, is because they want more time to put smutty scenes in. like, if they only get together halfway through, that's half the book without any smut (i guess??)
They're usually just rivals or just crabby at each other lol.
omg thank you for giving enemies-to-lovers recs that aren't the same
i loved fourth wing but I KID YOU NOT it definitely was categorized improperly but i also don’t know if ill read the second one. when you talked about how authors just try to rush plot i feel like that’s what happens with blood trials, inheritance games, deadly education the first books are sufficient. book tok is nice but writing definitely feels inorganic and unauthentic. look at the turnaround of books. like honey pls wRITE A GOOD BOOK
heavy on the seasoned reader cause i know what you mean.
Happy Birthday! I hope you had a good one. I 10000% agree that Cruel Prince is the perfect enemies to lovers.
I have no idea if would like it outside of that and I am trying to picture it and it is not coming off good.
im glad you praised the folk of the air series for their enemies to lovers 10:38
i was gonna mention it if you didnt 😆 i had a feeling you would like it lol
14:06 “he knocked over my soup” 😂 Happy Birthday btw!
so many people would benefit from reading danmei (qiang jin jiu, thousand autumns, erha), and baihe (jwqs) novels.
And as much as I don't mind reading a familiar/cliche concept, I would really like it better if it were different than the usual :)
not you giving the whole book outline
@@myocoree 😂😂. There's so much more, but this is just the main character and love interests relationship outline lol.
Powerless was like "It's enemies to lovers!" NO IT WASN'T. IT WAS INSTA LOVE. It pisses me off when they market it wrong like, girl be so for real.
THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! My friends insists it is, but it is 100% not 😭 😭 I’m convinced people have zero reading comprehension nowadays lmao
Honestly!! It genuinely upsets me that everyone number one, thinks this is enemies to lovers, and two, thinks this is genuinely good literature. The comprehension leveles must be at an all time low or something 😭
GURL I haven’t watched the whole vid but UR HAIRRRR LOOKS GORGEOUS
I love your video essays, i’ve said it once before and i will say it again :). also I WAS SO HURT BY THE ACOLYTE CANCELLATION.
Your hair looks GORG, and it's impressive that you did it yourself. Also Happy (Belated?) Birthday!!!!!
thank you!
OMGGG THE HAIRRR!!! Absolutely adorable!!!
Ngl girl I’ve been binging ur vids for the past few days 😂
LOVING THE SAPPHIC ENEMIES TO LOVERS RECS !!!!!
Honestly berserk is such an overlooked enemies to lovers story
Happy birthday!!🎉 And I do agree that a lot of books that are advertised as enemies to lovers lack the essence that makes the trope so loved. Either making it a lazy cop out or a rushed job. Though, I'm curious: What is/is there a name for a trope where Character A hates Character B but B doesn't necessarily hate A but doesn't like them either? Whether it be due to A not personally affecting B or outside situations make it where A can't like them.
I personally just think of it has one-sided enemies
Happy birthday, and your hair looks really good!!

Happy birthday and your hair looks gorgeous!
seeing contemporary books labelled as enemies to lovers is always wild to me because i agree, enemies for me have to have hate/strong dislike for each other, or if it's fantasy/political drama, they're on opposing sides (i haven't watched the Acolyte but i'm assuming that's how it is, the guy is a sith and the protagonist is a jedi or something?)
i think a lot of enemies to lovers in contemporary settings is really just rivals to lovers - like rival business owners, rival academics, opposing sports teams, etc. and if they are REALLY enemies, as you said, it's giving weird. like this guy in your office wanted to kill you and now y'all in love?? 🤔

Enemies to lovers isn’t a thing that really happens, it’s just a romance trope.
well….yeah? that’s kinda the point?
I would be very glad if someone helped me. I want to read a novel or story that has suspense, romance, and mystery. The female lead is very insecure but loves the main lead and vice versa. The second lead also loves her so much selflessly and secretly but she never notices his love.
