I actually love the vehicle. When I was a member of BMWCCA I would get all my helpful service hints from the club magazine which likely is all virtual now. I might still have the service books which set me back I think 700 dollars. The books are expensive. The wiring harness connector in the door jamb is best cleaned and dielectric grease applied. Hi Mr Scotty , I have a 2021 Royal Enfield Bullet 350 efi (kick start) model motorcycle. It is a very good bike. But on 2 occasions , My motorcycle stops for no reason as if it is running out of fuel , in a full tank of Gas. And once after a long 15 km ride , I went to have a cup of coffee for 5 min and then tried to kick start my bike but did not start for 5-8 kicks. Then suddenly it starts on the 9th kick. Please help me find a solution for this. Desperately need your help. Thank you.
Older cars are easier to fix because (1) their design is simpler to understand, (2) the engine bay isn't as cluttered and (3) lots of people have made RUclips videos about how to fix their common problems.
My '95 M3 needed a new fuel pump. The dealer wanted $700. Turns out BMW buys its fuel pumps from VDO. I got a VDO pump for $148 and put it in myself - took half an hour.
My trick is I get slightly used cars ( around 2-3 years old with under 30k miles). They tend to drop about 40% in price and if kept for just a Few years and sold again you tend to loose only about 10%. However My last car I did this too I bought for 29k and sold for 31k after 4 years of owning it, so can’t complain with that.
I’m assuming there’s a reason why he didn’t put the top up, sometimes the cost of replacing tops cost more than the car is worth. He also said it needed a fuel pump so it probably didn’t run when he bought it.
I admire him for his willingness to drive an older car. That says a lot for his character. Many kids his age would not want to drive a vehicle that old. Says a lot about his parents too.
A real man can admit his age. I am so happy for you your grandson is featured in this video, I am hope full that he has a safer journey because he learns from the best! Please keep doing what you do best!
The blower motor in my car made a sound similar to that ever since I bought it. I took it out to clean and inspect it, and found a little bolt that was vibrating in the plastic fan blades. Cleaned it up, and runs like new. 👊🤓👍
Once again, RESPECT to you, Scotty, for not being a brand snob and telling like it is. People may think you hate BMWs and Toyotas are the only cars you prefer, but this is a perfect example that a good car is a good car and time/period is more of a factor in how the car is built than the brand. The E30 series is a true classic!
Scotty has a religious zeal against snobbery in all of its forms. He keeps his mind on the primary purpose of a motor vehicle, which is to move people & things. Breakdowns ruin the functionality. Having fun while driving is a bonus. Paying top dollar for a car in which to pose is a foreign concept to Scotty.
I got an E30 M20B25,same type of engine,2500cc.All these engine need is valve adjustment and time belt, every 40.000 km. Manual of course.Your grandson made an excellent choise Greetings from Europe
My Dad had a 1985 BMW 325e 5 speed and he loved that thing he owned it from 1987 to 1999 though he did say everything was metric and it took a weird battery and back in the 90s when he owned it he said only the dealership and Sears sold the battery dealership wanted over $500 in 1990's money whereas Sears only wanted $50 lol
I think the most annoying thing about my father's 1988 model 525e is the weird battery. Dad called the automobile association to investigate the crook battery, and the patrol sold him a new one on the spot for just over AUD$500. In my 1999 Camry, I keep using the OEM model Century which has a list price of $200 but can sometimes be bought cheaper because most auto parts shops stock it. 7 years lifespan every time.
The reason the battery is in the back right is to offset the weight of the driver. All 4 cylinder models have the battery under the hood on the passenger side, all 6 cylinder models have it in the rear right corner. And there are all kinds of different batteries that will fit back there.
Been following Scotty for some time now and I just love the fun way he gives us the basic information we need when making one of the most important decisions related to a car.
Meanwhile now you can buy a 2011 535i for 5k at 100k miles, put a stage 1 tune on it, and get 510 to the wheels. I have my Altima for daily driving, I have the bimmer for good times.
When I was born (in 2005) my dad had a 1986 BMW 535i. It was rusty as heck (being in Michigan), and was super loud, but it was awesome. He got rid of it in 2007 because he couldn't drive it in the winter (RWD, and he couldn't even get up our driveway, which was not steep), and got a 2000 Honda Civic DX Coupe. Fun times with the BMW, I wish he still had it. he LOVED that thing. My mom, in 2005, got a brand new Hyundai Tuscon. The car I was driven home from the hospital in. I guess that's where my deep hate for Korean cars comes from... but before that, she had a 1985 Audi 5000. A much better car.
We've got an '87 325ic (5 speed manual) that my husband bought new. The dealer went to Germany, bought it there (drove it on the Autobahn) and had it shipped over. It's been a good car. I've started driving it again recently and remember how much fun it is to drive a manual.
My 26 year old daughter drives an 83 e30, my 20 year old daughter an 89 e30 sedan, me? I got the 84 e23 sedan, all three are white and take up every inch of our driveway! All 3 are awesome, beautiful and reliable.
I've been fixing up my (2) E46 BMW's that I never set out to originally get. Both are convertibles and I've gotta say your're 100% right about them. The repairs are overpriced there's too much cheap brittle plastic, especially around the engine. But Scotty, they do look beautiful when in good shape. If well maintained the are great fun to drive. One thing the enthusiasts will tell you is, if you know the fixes that huge aftermarket makes the non-OEM parts really cheap. So it's not a money pit for the enthusiasts, at least until the come across a big part swap.
That is a BMW anyone can work on. Don’t forget the timing belt which is an easy job for Scotty. I was a BMW enthusiast for these E30s starting at sixteen back in 1998 when I got my first one. That enthusiasm for BMW stopped around 2012 with all the planed obsolescence BMW engineered into their vehicles. I was able to regain the enthusiasm by going back 3 decades and picking up an old reliable BMW with the M30 straight six. They really did know how to make them in Deutschland back then.
I had an '86 325. Loved it but a rear axle broke at 420,000 kms. That was the point of no return even though the engine was still good to go. Fun to drive though.
My BMW E36 Z3 had that same fan motor buzzing grinding sound but it was an easy fix for me and that's the only thing I had to fix for the AC system in this car. I love maintaining these older BMW's they were much better to work on then modern BMW's from late 2006 and up.
@@user-rd5nc1nb9f Not for intake manifolds, coolant components, and any other components subjected to constant temperature and stress variations - especially in fluids such as cooling fluid. If that were the case then plastic would've been used for brake lines, exhaust manifolds, wheels, etc. Plastic is a cost-cutting move. Planned obsolescence. No more, no less.
With good care they have out lived many bmw 6 cylinder engines or even other car models...one of the most thing that destroys them is people who use these engines for spinning...if it wasn't for that.... its way more solid than any engines ever built...
@CT is infant grade content now the earlier ones where indeed, but they where improved overtime and bmw fixxed those issues overtime. The best 6 cilinder is the m30b35 in the 1986 - -1992 bmw E32 735i 7 serie
Just rolled over 230,000 miles on my BMW M52tu straight 6 yesterday. Rebuilt the vanos seals last month, new valve cover seals, general maintenance and fluid changes, and thank the Lord, she keeps moving forward! 😎00(///)(///)00
@CT is infant grade content now Do you own one to confirm it? My girlfriends E30 M3 has over 200k on the clock and is still running fine like a civic 😂
I'd even go as far as to say that pre 2010 era BMW aren't bad as reliability goes. I own an E46 (1999-2006) and they're notorious for being one of the last well built BMWs. The motor is butter smooth, and I haven't had an issue I didn't fix myself since owning the car - yet (knock on wood). As soon as they ditched the straight 6 for their little turbocharged 4 cylinders, is when I'd draw the line.
@CT is infant grade content now have you ever owned an old bm? Honest question. They’re reliable as anything. Depending on where you live any car will rot. Pre 2000 bmws are built like tanks, they’re simple to work on and their parts are cheap as chips.
I watch your videos for a long time and I should have listen but I just could not help myself and bought a BMW 635D 2009 in the UK. Has 140.000 miles and I got it for 2000 gbp as non running. Oh my God Scotty, you were so right. I spend 8000 to get it right myself mostly, the list is huge, new paint, interior leather fixed, new tyres and paint on rims powder coated, on engine I did most work myself, it was very hard, i had to study a lot, I also have a mechanic specialist friend who help me out, we pretty much rebuild the engine. We serviced the transmission, put new brakes from brembo and finally now after 2000 miles of very easy driving to brake in the engine i put again new oil warm it up and see what it can do. Scotty, I totally agree, it was countless hours of work, lots of money, lots of sweat, but it put a huge smile on my face, this drives like a dream, it pulls and mpg is over 40 mixed. Over 50 on highway on a 300 horse power car !!! That throw you in the seat at 80 mph . So all you read this, listen to Scotty or pay the price I payed in my own sweet and blood. Bmw is not cheap !!!
Even Scotty would have to BMW! (Buy More Wrenches!) If his Grandson is not poor now, he will be when discovers it is BMW (Big Money Waster!) Hey! it is all in fun!
Had an ‘80 320i, ran forever. Only things that broke on it was the alternator and the factory hazard switch that would break on and drain the battery. It had a JVC pullout stereo. AC was busted, just open the sunroof and roll down the windows!
I own a red automatic 1987 BMW 325ic E30 convertible with black interior 169k miles and no cracks on dashboard and runs really smooth. It's a really fun car to cruise, but to race or drift I would take my 1987 325is or 1991 325ix. (OO=[][]=OO)
I thought you said you were disowning your grandson? Sounds like you should be congratulating him and patting him on the back. I wish I could get a find like that, that would be super rare in Cali.
Couldn't agree more my first car was a 1995 540i and it was built to last and I beat the hell out of it. Just like you said they used to know how to make them.
I think , I heard the car’s tires were the ones that were on it when he bought it. If that is true those tires are not safe to drive on. They are dried out and will blow out , especially at speed.
3 Series Bimmers from the 90's are great cars. Nice looking, dependable. I'm dealing with plastic failure in the interior of my '97 328i, which is common. But mechanically it's solid. In 4 years of ownership my only repairs were things you'd expect from a 24 year old car (suspension joints and bushings, brakes, heater valve, coolant tank sensor, blower motor control). Runs and drives like a dream though, now that the suspension is restored. Bulletproof engine and transmission.
I have a 2002 E46 convertible. Automatic...smooth transmission...feels great to have that torque in the rear wheel drive. Mine has 143,000 miles. looks and drives like new.

If that were the case then plastic would've been used for brake lines, exhaust manifolds, wheels, etc. Plastic is a cost-cutting move. Planned obsolescence. No more, no less.
Picked up a 2001 e39 525i with 57,000 original miles. Solid car and drives great! I would not own anything newer that is BMW!!!
Well...So much for your professional advice to family Scotty..
He knew he had an ace in the hole with Grandpa Scotty as his go to mechanic.
Finally a proper son. Your grandson will have to start his own RUclips channel where he preaches BMW.
Tbh he needs to join the bmw crew
no
U coming out for pride month?? Lmfaooo
Best complimentary Scotty video on BMW EVER!
The M20 is one of the best engines....
With good care they have out lived many bmw 6 cylinder engines or even other car models...one of the most thing that destroys them is people who use these engines for spinning...if it wasn't for that.... its way more solid than any engines ever built...
M10 is
@CT is infant grade content now the earlier ones where indeed, but they where improved overtime and bmw fixxed those issues overtime. The best 6 cilinder is the m30b35 in the 1986 - -1992 bmw E32 735i 7 serie
M30 was better and had a chain not a belt(I put one in my e30)
@@AMSUDZ On that note you are definitely right...
Just rolled over 230,000 miles on my BMW M52tu straight 6 yesterday. Rebuilt the vanos seals last month, new valve cover seals, general maintenance and fluid changes, and thank the Lord, she keeps moving forward!
😎00(///)(///)00
My 328i outlasted every Ford I've ever had put together. Depends on how you take care of them
@CT is infant grade content now Do you own one to confirm it? My girlfriends E30 M3 has over 200k on the clock and is still running fine like a civic 😂
Depending on which Ford it outlasts.
While other Fords such as the Crown Victoria lasting miles and miles.
Scotty says he got it for $1500 which is an absolute steal. It's definitely worth upwards of 6k in the northwest
Pre 2000's BMW's weren't bad as far as reliability goes.
As soon as they ditched the straight 6 for their little turbocharged 4 cylinders, is when I'd draw the line.
loved the 99 ones
@@dylanmitchell8498 E60s with the v8 or v10 are terrible though
@@dylanmitchell8498 You mean E90?
@@floridianrailauto9032 the V8 for the E90 - E93 M3s, the V10 for the E60 M5 (the regular 5 series getting the lower displacement V8s)
I bought a 1990 325i with 83k miles.
Gold exterior with Tan interior and it still looks fabulous!
Scotty, now you joined our BMW family after cursing for years :)
There are certainly relatively reliable BMWs.
relatively = weasel word
Relatively……not good enough
Unfortunately, I cannot say they are certainly reliable but there are better built ones.
Yes, the old ones like this.
@CT is infant grade content now have you ever owned an old bm? Honest question. They’re reliable as anything. Depending on where you live any car will rot. Pre 2000 bmws are built like tanks, they’re simple to work on and their parts are cheap as chips.
Picked me up an 1990 e30 vert that has been sitting for a year. Super fun car to drive and with basic maintenance, it runs really well now.
Sounds like really good advice on the Blue Driver!
Congratulations ! It sounds great.
What a beauty
Heretical automatic tho. And I prefer the roofed version
"Don't be a fanatic" Scotty's so right, I'm a hopeless fanatic and I've wasted loads of money.
Scotty looks like a Millionaire driving that Bimmer... Oh, wait a minute.. He and I are millionaires and we both drive 94 Celicas.
When BMWs were about touring and enjoying the trip…those were great rides with the top down.
Hey Scotty, I wish i owned a Time Machine. I would travel back to 1994 and buy every 94 Celica i could get my hands on.
Love you. You make learning about cars so fun
Scotty, good for you, we finally converted you to BMW. WELCOME TO THE ULTIMATE DRIVING MACHINE..!
I think u are in opposite land
No way.
The ultimate money pit machine if it's a newer one ;D
Even Scotty would have to BMW! (Buy More Wrenches!) If his Grandson is not poor now, he will be when discovers it is BMW (Big Money Waster!) Hey! it is all in fun!
Yes their high maintenance but they are so smooth and so beautiful
Had an ‘80 320i, ran forever. Only things that broke on it was the alternator and the factory hazard switch that would break on and drain the battery. It had a JVC pullout stereo. AC was busted, just open the sunroof and roll down the windows!
“might have to disown him” gawdamn 😂
I own a red automatic 1987 BMW 325ic E30 convertible with black interior 169k miles and no cracks on dashboard and runs really smooth. It's a really fun car to cruise, but to race or drift I would take my 1987 325is or 1991 325ix. (OO=[][]=OO)
Your grandson failed you more than i failed my mom, finaly a worthy opponent !
One of the great thing about BMW is the tons of aftermarket parts. Back in the 70's and 80's when BMW where indestructible.
It seems like your grandchildren don’t want an inheritance
I think , I heard the car’s tires were the ones that were on it when he bought it. If that is true those tires are not safe to drive on. They are dried out and will blow out , especially at speed.
we owned a 1988 325 i back in the days and it ran like a dream ! i'd buy one again if i find the perfect one out there ! solid BMW
This is the only time i seen scotty
Genuinely happy about a car 🤷🏻♂️😂
Thank you!!
“Feels safe, it’s a heavy car, gotta lotta weight to it” they’re known for being light lol, 2500 lbs
Right! E30s are very light!
wow, all the green lawns. Where ever this is, they must spend a ton on sprinklers!
Should have got a scion tc!
Wait…… did Scotty just talked good about a BMW? This is the end people!
I have a 2002 E46 convertible. Automatic...smooth transmission...feels great to have that torque in the rear wheel drive. Mine has 143,000 miles. looks and drives like new.
He got a bargain, must be proud of him 👍
That’s a classic!
E30 convertible.
Very smart grandson
Only someone related to scotty should be brave enough to buy something like this....
lol
Kudos to your grandson! What a smart kid! Nice find!
Dashboard looks like 300k I’m sure that cluster stopped at 70k 😎 if you know e30s you know e30s
Not sitting for hundreds of hours with the top down in a blazing sun being bombarded with UV? That'll wreck the dash of a car with ZERO miles on it.
I drove a convertible Sebring once in California. Perfect weather for it but not here in Ohio.
Sure there isnt a recall on this model of grandson? Something not right about this Kilmer
Love them concrete driveway rims Scotty!! 😝😝
Scotty grandson bought this car so he could make more videos !!! Smart move
Afternoon, Scotty!!
