I'm betting that the rod bearings were replaced at some point. The E92 V8 like the E46 M3 are going to need rod bearings at some point due to BMW being more concerned with the environment (the alloys used from the factory are not robust enough for these engines. The E46 M3 has a red line of 8,100 rpm and the E92 M3 has a red line of 8,500 rpm) than they are for the longevity of the engine. After market replacement bearings are bullet proof. All the true M cars are race cars. I own both an E36 M3 and an E46 M3. Greatest driving cars ever made.

Don't be discouraged about buying a BMW but you do need to do your due diligence. By that I mean if you are buying used see that the required maintenance has been done. So many BMW's on the market have never been maintained. These cars are maintenance sensitive like all German cars but most Americans never due the required maintenance after the warranty expires. Americans just won't due brake fluid flushes and cooling system flushes every 2 years let alone changing the oil every 5K miles. I've owned 4 BMW's and currently own an E36 M3 and an E46 M3 and I've nerve had the problems of which so many complain, but my BMW's are well maintained.

You need to send oil change samples to Blackstone (google it) and change that oil every 5k miles no matter what BMW says. Doing this will tell you the condition of your rod bearings by the amount of metal in the oil. Gives you a heads up to change those bearings before you destroy your very expensive engine.

Shows a picture of a early C4 'Vette when he says a rich guys Corvette. The base C5,C6 and C7 Corvette's would eat a stock M series BMW for lunch.A damn near 30 year old C5 Z06 would walk all over a M3 and give a M5 a run for it's money.A stock M3,M5 couldn't touch a stock C6 or C7 let alone one with the Z06 option. And at damn near half the price.

I owned a 2008 M3 sedan 6 speed manual that I bought for $25,000.00 Canadian in 2014...that was a great price at the time as the car was mint and low mileage.
    It was a beast.
I should have kept it but I buy my cars, enjoy driving them and then move on to the next one...I've owned over 30 exotic & performance cars during my lifetime thus far and have enjoyed every single one of them.

It is akward to recommend E92 M3 to people, this model is known for rod bearing issue. Even compared to same period W204 C63, this M3 is a little inferior, because the M156 in C63 is way too good.
