    Computer speakers are usually powered speakers. They have one stereo amp in the primary and bell wire cable to the secondary passive speaker. They have a passive cross overs. There are some active speakers that have all the electonics in one speaker but no passive cross over on either speaker. Most active speakers have amplifiers in each speaker and can work in any position in a surround sound set up.
    From a computer you can use the built in sound card to output 5.1 via three 3.5mm jacks. The sound card software offers balance and control to the 6 speakers. There are also 8 channel HDMI debedders that pass through the 4K HDMI to a screen (if wanted, but you don't need to plug a screen in for it to work) and split off 8 channels of line level analogue audio to powered or active speakers as well as 7.1 compressed optical out. The computer recognises the debedder as audio and there is some built in control in the operating system and without the need for a receiver. It can be used with a DVD, Blueray player or media box.
    There are small boxes that take the optical out from a TV and convert to analogue line level input to any amplifier or powered or active speakers, but possibly none doing 6 channels for surround sound. Optical over Toslink is uncompressed for stereo but compressed for 5.1 and 7.1.
    If the active speakers have DSP and built in DACs there can be issues with latency, the lag in lip synch produced by the extra processing in the electronics. This is why passive and analogue active systems are easy to set up for surround sound with a mix and match but many modern wireless DSP systems are not.
    The easiest way to control surround sound is to have 5 speakers the same. Rear channels, even on a good sound track spend much of the time silent or near silent. What they are offered up is rarely the range from the centre and front left and right. You can use less expensive or smaller speakers but then have to do some balancing for the volume level. A receiver makes that easier. In 6 channels systems the speaker most in use is the centre speaker and that needs to handle most of the speech as well as the full audio range for the action.

      Look at most better motherboards, more and more Dolby Atmos fopr headphones, Resonance and DTS headphones is promoted and soundcards are going the way of the dodo, 5.1 is getting rare.
      _Optical over Toslink is uncompressed for stereo but compressed for 5.1 and 7.1._
      5.1 maximum, 7.1 matrixed (unless something changed rather recently).
      I'd like to have seen better (flexibility) but Windows with the WASAPI can only support 8 channels (in a set order), more needs to be bitstreamed from the application directly to a receiver or nope.
      _The easiest way to control surround sound is to have 5 speakers the same. Rear channels, even on a good sound track spend much of the time silent or near silent._
      Kinda true. I think pc I think not just film but interactive applications, I play a lot of GTFO for example, and front or rear you can just spin around and hear the exact same rear as front, having all identical speakers works best for that. Rear speakers rarely are silent. I just got a great deal on an Atmos receiver and using overheads, and where many films have a lacklustre mix for Atmos as I understand it, Cyberpunk 2077 does not keep those silent.

    Long comment alert...
    Thanks for the video... there doesn't seem to be a lot of information online on the topic. I'm new to using active speakers and this has definitely come with some surprises... I purchased a pair of Yamaha HS8 monitors with the intention of having them as dual purpose for both a computer set up as well as listening to music either through bluetooth or on a turntable. So one of the inputs of the monitors is connected to an audio interface on the opposite side of the room where my computer setup is... I am able to switch back and forth from these monitors to some smaller speakers at the desk when need be. The plan was to use the 2nd input to connect to a Bluetooth receiver and turntable close to where the speakers were... I soon found out that on the less expensive stereo receivers the "line outputs" are not volume controlled and if I was going to use a receiver, I needed a more expensive one with "pre outs" to control the volume via remote. It seems like such a waste becase I'm only using two "speakers" and the receiver wont be connected to a tv, but this allows me to connect my turntable, have Bluetooth, an am/fm tunner, and the volume be controlled remotely.
    The only issue I have now is that it seems like the volume output of the pre outs on the receiver is significantly low... When using the monitors with my computer I had the volume on them set halfway.... which got louder than I needed them to be. If I leave them set halfway, they do not get loud at all with the receiver... and even attempting to turn them up to a decent volume just forces the receiver to power down.... so I now have the monitors set to max volume 🤷‍♂️...

      @@ealanosborne Thanks for the reply.... I figured out that it is the audio interface that is causing the huge volume reduction. The volume jumps way up as soon as I disconnect it. It's an older one, so I will first try to upgrade drivers and switch it out if that doesn't work. After using the vinyl I now have noticed an issue with heavy sibilance on some records... so I'm now working on that issue. Baby steps....

    • @ealanosborne
      @ealanosborne  2 года назад +1

      Hmmm…well, I haven’t heard the KRK sub in person, but on paper they have roughly the same specs, but the KRK is much more expensive. A bonus about the KRK is that it has XLR inputs and outputs, if your AVR/preamp supports that for the sub out. Cleaner audio and almost no chance to get any ground hum with XLR.
      But if your AVR only supports RCA outs, dual Klipsch subs would be just fine. I always say 2 subs are better than one anyway, since it pressurizes the room better, depending on where your furniture is, etc. 🤘

    So I bought a new one (Denon AVC-S660H) while taken it for granted that all newer receivers provided Zone2 outlets.
    I am noob to this. But perfectly happy with my speakers. So is there any way for me to connect my studio monitors to ordinary cable core wire terminals?

    • @ealanosborne
      @ealanosborne  2 года назад +1

      I'm not 100% sure, but I don't think there's a safe way to connect active monitors to standard speaker terminals, unless there was a way to disable the internal amps of your Dynaudio speakers. That's what is great about active monitors is that internally they have separate amps for woofers and tweeters, which gives them great sonic qualities. But yeah...unless there's a way to bypass the Dynaudio amps, that's going to be too much power going from the Denon AVR, which could potentially damage the speakers.

I thought I could try out my glorious Adam Audio T7Vs on my Onkyo NR626 but it has just the Subwoofer pre out and a L and R called Zone 2... Which is a whole other problem. That's when I was man enough to admit defeat and put the Adams back on my keyboard where they belong.

      It’s honestly more difficult (and usually more expensive) to use powered speakers, unless you’re willing to get used equipment like my buddy Jesse in the video (and he already had powered speakers from mixing music).
      You’ll find powered speaker systems in professional mixing studios because powered monitors are meant to be as flat as possible in their frequency response. So in order to make them fit the space acoustically, a LOT of work goes into EQ and acoustic treatment, so it’ll be even less “plug and play” than a traditional HT system with an AVR and passive speakers. 🤷‍♂️

    • @ealanosborne
      @ealanosborne  3 года назад +1

      Well, since you already have a goal of expanding and upgrading over time, I wouldn’t suggest a sound bar. I’d stick with a traditional AV receiver and wired speakers.
      These days, with Atmos being so popular, I’d get a 7 channel receiver so you have the option of doing decent Atmos later without having to purchase a new receiver to make it happen. (Denon S760H if you or a friend has a Costco membership. Or Onkyo TX-NR6050, also at Costco. Or Yamaha RX-V6A. Or Sony STR-DH790)
      BUT…I’d start with a 5.1 speaker system. The Klipsch 5.1 Reference Theater Pack is still the best bang for your buck, and is a great way to get you up and running with a base 5.1 surround system. Especially if you’re in an apartment. You don’t wanna go hog wild in an apartment, cuz that’ll be overkill.
      But, if you can spend more than a few hundred dollars on your first 5.1 system, I’d go for the SVS Prime 5.1 system. It’s so much better, but it comes with a price tag around $1,000. 😬 But the logic behind that is SVS offers some fantastic speakers at different price points. So you’ll be able to stay within the SVS family of speakers for a very long time, not to mention dealing with their incredible customer service.
      16 gauge speaker wire you can get by with for home theater, but 14 gauge copper I would recommend, since it’s thicker and more durable (but costs a little more).
      And that should set you up at the start! Good luck! 🤘

    • @ealanosborne
      @ealanosborne  Год назад +1

      @@SemiSynergist Hi! Answering your questions:
      1) No, there’s no reason to use Optical if you can use HDMI ARC. It’s either/or. There’s no way to do both simultaneously. And besides, Optical can only handle up to 7.1 multichannel output and it’s compressed. It doesn’t support uncompressed Dolby TrueHD or DTS HD-MA signals, so HDMI is far superior.
      2) A phono input isn’t usually standard on preamps. The more expensive ones might have it. Otherwise, you’ll just need a phono preamp between your turntable and preamp processor, since all preamps still have a few analog inputs for turntables or CD players.
      3) Cost is definitely a factor using powered speakers, since it’s unusual. They’re normally used in a music studio or post production facility, working with audio interfaces and computers. And especially dealing with XLR outputs, that drives up the cost, too. So the Tonewinner AT-300 is your cheapest option. Just the honest truth. Unless you find a great deal on a used product. 🙌🎉

Around $200 brand new is going to almost impossible with 4 speakers and a sub, though, unless you find a killer deal on a used one. I personally use gear from Focusrite when it comes to music production. I’ve had really good luck with their stuff.

      @@ealanosborne thanks for the reply! And thanks for the suggestion! Yeah the first thing that pops up anywhere when you type “audio interface” is either Focusrite Scarlett or Presonus.. It seems to me though the bigger they get- the more inputs for different instruments/mics they have (of which I don’t need) and some may have 1 additional output.. I can’t really find something that has 1 or 2 inputs max (I may get a mic and use it for voice chat down the road, right now those inputs are of no use to me at all) and several outputs to run a few different sets of speakers and a sub.. If you know of anything, even if it’s a little more expensive, point me in that direction!

    Is it possible to mix active and passive speakers using this method? I have x2 active studio monitors and 2 passive stereo speakers spare, so wondering if I can mix and match here?

    • @ealanosborne
      @ealanosborne  Год назад +1

      On paper it’s possible! If you have a preamp, the active speakers need no external amp in the signal chain, whereas the passive speaker will need to be powered by an external amp. But you should be able to have both. 🎉

    Hey Ealan, I recently ordered a package deal with a Fluance turntable, their preamp, and their Ai41 powered/active bookshelf speakers. Would you be willing/able to advise me on an affordable receiver that would allow me to expand this speaker system to 4.1 or 5.1 surround? For context, the Fluance Ai41 comes with one active/powered speaker (with inputs for RCA, Bluetooth, or Optical TOSLINK) and one passive speaker, which is attached to the powered speaker. Am I better off simply returning this setup and starting over again? Thanks for the great content and for lending your expertise!

    • @ealanosborne
      @ealanosborne  2 года назад

      Hmmm…yeah, since the passive speaker relies on the powered speaker, that would complicate things when you decide to expand it to 4.1 or 5.1. You’d need to go all in, all being powered speakers, or all being passive.
      Unfortunately, there are no 5.1 preamps out there (yet, I hope) to make a killer 5.1 powered speaker system. Although there are rumors that IOTA is making a 9 channel preamp available sometime in 2023, which will be groundbreaking, since surround sound preamps nowadays are at least 13 channels or more. 🤦‍♂️

      @@ealanosborne Thanks for the incredibly prompt reply! As two final questions, are there any phono preamps that have two sets of RCA outputs that can be powered in tandem, or some other setup that would allow me to send a preamplified signal to two different active speakers (each of which has a passive speaker connected to it)? Is there any reason that would be a poor idea in terms of sound quality? Thanks again. You rock

      @@jakequarstad8705 Thanks, dude! And I guess one way to do it is to put two RCA Y-splitters in the L and R preout, so you can then have up to 4 speakers connected to it. But I haven't seen any phono preamps with two redundant sets of preouts to have up to 4 speakers connected. But that doesn't mean they don't exist - I just haven't come across one yet. 😄

      @@ealanosborne Great idea. Thanks, Ealan. I might give this a try at some point until I can afford to upgrade to a more long-term solution with a receiver. I suppose if I split the signal at the preout that I may need to consider keeping the cable length fairly consistent (going to each of the active speakers) in order for the transmission to be in sync.

I would test it with the active speakers you already possess to make sure it works, though.

    Hi... i'm a colorist here in india. i'm currently in the process of upgrading my studio to a dolby atmos setup for final reference watching with the team.... so i need to have a decent system.....
    my logical step was to buy a audio interface with amount of outputs i need and assign it in Davinci resolve.... but i do also love to use it as a home theater for other contents as well... so im trying to build a setup which consist of - Tonewinner At 200 Processor which do have Xlr outputs... and for speakers im considering jbl 3 series ,8 inch ones as my bed layer speakers , JBL 10 inch Studio monitor subs and with JBL Control 2s as my atmos speakers (which does have easy mounting options on ceiling) . what do you think ... would love to know your opinion !

    I am planning to get Yamaha hs5' (maybe HS8 later) and Adam audio t5v for a very small work from home office space. Since my computer and OLED monitor do work for me also por entertainment purposes. I figured that I can buy the the monitors 2 a piece and get as many as needed over time (11 channels? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ )... So I figured that I can start with 2. Add a Sound blaster X3/4 sound card (USB only choice because personal/work laptop) add center and surround (mix and match different monitors to figure the type of sound I like best) and once I eventually move to a bigger house/Apt, I could just add more channels or bigger/fancier studio monitors for the Front and center channels and keep the smaller & older ones as surrounds/Atmos. Once at the new place a sound processor like the BasX MC1 13.2 or an used one with XLR connections could do it for me.
    I don't want to embark on the Amplifier route to pair them with X speaker type and whatnot.. I will rater use the built in amp on the speaker as designed.. No clipping... and if XLR connections can be used with a sound card.. I won't have to worry about strange noises..
    So..
    1.- I get to built the home theater system over time and I might "experiment" with different options knowing that those that get left behind will be used a surrounds..
    2.- By using a sound card I will be able to skip a generation or 2 of current sound processors and possibly get a HDMI 2.1 or USB-4 connection unit at much lower price a few years from now..
    Still.. I wonder why there are so few people posting about set it up something like this for home theater.. I have yet to find one using a computer sound card. (If I could find a USB Sound card with 5.1 outs that are XLR or TRS outputs this will be easier)
    Is there a problem or limitation with a set up like this that your experience is making you scream at your computer scream?
    Is there any chance that Jessie could try and get something like a SoundBlaster X4 or the Sound Blaster AE-9 Sound Card PCIe card (if he has a desktop) or any similar product..
    (This could be a good excuse to post more content on the channel and a follow up to this one video)
    I wonder if this is a great value or.. Should I skip the sound card jump to the sound processor as soon as I get past 3 channels?
