You called the DPF the DEF. The DPF is the big chamber, it catches the soot from the engine. The DEF getting pumped into the exhaust before the catalyst and after the DPF which turns NOx emissions into nitrogen and water. That's it. The biggest greenhouse gas a diesel produces is NOx due to the extremely high combustion temps.
Edit: Your dislike of the EGR system I find kinda funny. GM placed the EGR after the DPF specifically so it would stop the primary failure problem of diesel EGR systems, the soot buildup. Your complain't of it being overcomplicated it almost comical considering that EGR system is one of the simplest ones ever created lol.

It’s going to use oil from the very beginning ,and then at 120,000 miles that stupid belt at the back of the engine is going to need replacing at around 1200 dollars . In the first generation the belt needed replacing at 100,000 miles ,for some people that comes quickly. One would think they could use a chain instead of the belt and make it last the life of the engine . So for me I’ll pass on anything GM.

@@jellyfrosh9102 I don't have an issue with timing belt or chain replacement when it's designed to be replaceable. This engine has everything in the back of the engine driven off the crankshaft. That means getting the transmission or engine out, the flywheel off, then any covers to expose the chains/belts. Basically they designed it like those timing components won't fail, but we all know they will.
