It's not all rainbows and roses having a store. I used to own a shop but closed it cuz the rent just kept going up. It is true what he says how building relationships with your customers will gain loyal customers. But owning a shop was like being married to the business. And owning a card shop was like owning a money pit!! Where does all the money go???? It was always, "Make that sale!!", cuz you got more inventory on the way from your pre-orders. Sure, you might gross a lot of money, but your profits are razor thin because of competition. Owning a card shop is a young man's game. I just sell online nowadays, and its way easier and less headache and heartache. Selling online has less overhead. One advantage owning a card shop has is that you have a place that people can sell you stuff. That's probably the best thing for card shop owners. But you have to have a lot money. Good video. Thank you for sharing.
Appreciate your insight. I found this video because I was looking for info on what the mark ups are on boxes. Any chance you know how much cases and boxes cost from the distributors? Sure the box sells for 100, 200, or 300 a piece but what is the store making off a sales like that?

Did nobody watch the interview…? More than half of the comments could be answered. UpFlip; awesome job interviewing Turf and Dirt! Small business’ come and go. With risk comes reward. Jimmy and Stacy found a way to run a small local business and used the tools that were in front of them to help them. That’s called ingenuity. America is the land of opportunity. I’m proud of this shop!
People in general love to hear what they already know... For instance.."Telling a gorgeous lady that she's Beautiful"..or "Telling an Athlete who's elite how spectacular they are".
The most awesome, informative video that I’ve ever seen, about anything! Thank you so much for making this. I’ve had in the back of mind about wanting to start my own sports card shop. I would love to make that happen. This video helped me understand a lot. Thank you!
Fake. Like the other guy from Pawn Stars I think his name was Gary or whatever they're just trying to hype up the price along with shady backdoor deals lol. They don't really make all of what they claim.
Easy to see why they are making so much money. The markup they are selling packs and boxes looks excessive! Can’t believe people are repeat customers. But it’s their money. And that’s in store. Probably a lot worse for online breaking.
BS! 24:22 Taking home $100,000 your first year does not equal $62,000 a month! I've collected for four decades, spent most of my use working in a shop and then owning a shop through the 90s. The shop like that will not and cannot do $62,000 a month. You talk about honesty and transparency? Collectors and investors would still watch this if you just said something like "We're on track to netting over $100,000 our first year!"... now I'm not going to watch the rest of it.
I was impressed with how much thought went into every nook and cranny of the store. They have figured out many different ways to appeal to various collectors!
We were very impressed with the Cardscore technology and are excited to where the future of the sports card market industry goes. Thanks for checking out the channel Cardscore Team and do keep us updated on your business journey!
@George Havonoc a 10 case of what? You've verified their pricing? If this is true, these 2 are the dumbest business owners ive ever seen. I cant even find $200 srp boxes for $300. Might be time to fly to WA
Great vid. Jim is a great interview. Fantastic camera presence. He and his wife couldn't be better suited for the biz. However, oh man, I don't like where this hobby is going for store owners. Jim said he was sitting on $2 million or so of product/inventory. Or, at least that's what he thought he could sell the store for if he sold the store today. I'm old. I lived through the last card shop/hobby crash and burn. The current bubble is cool and profitable. Until it isn't. Because of Jim's business being on so many internet platforms in addition to the physical store, it should be easy to see when the biz has run its course. Good luck friends.

They rarely make videos like this anymore 😀. Very informative and motivating to the younger audience. I dwell in Pokemon cards but the information can be applied there too.
This is a sports card store to me. I like the "Clutter" and I LOVE when you have the big price stickers. I can't stand going to a store and I can't see the prices and have to keep asking to see something. The owner or worker usually gets upset because I'm not buying them.
Great points Arody. Sometimes its the little things that can really make a local sports card store (lcs) or even a business in general really standout.
That is very very true Gem. 750k in sports cards sales absolutely does not mean no where near 750k in sports cards profit. That's a very good business point, thanks for sharing and supporting the channel Gem Mint!

Im very curious to see what theyll be like in five years. They started a shop during the height of the recent card market. Plenty of shops in the 90s did well until the market crashed and they were left in the dust.
Guy works 80 hours a week; takes home 100,000k a year. Between him and his wife, they each make $50k. They should just get a regular job and enjoy life more. Thoughts?
Seems distributors are not allowing new businesses to buy sports cards since existing demand is so high, so only businesses grand fathered in are able to get product. Do you have any suggestions on a distributor?
I’m in Indianapolis and we have 3 card shops. One is cards/memorabilia and it’s far from me but not many boxes/packs, one is mostly Magic/Pokémon and doesn’t have much product at all, and the other, which is the closest one to me, is strictly boxes and he might have a few boxes open for packs. I think it’s awesome that you have the option to buy boxes/packs for every product here. Too bad you’re in Washington. I’ve always wanted to open a card shop but I fear, due to the ups and downs of the hobby, I’ll lose money. Plus, Indy is a kind of a weird market and I mean weird as in we don’t have really have a market. That’s my dream though. A sports card shop or music store. Maybe one day..

This bubble is no different from the 90's. The production numbers increase over the last 2 years has already flooded the market and new collectors will get burned hard imo.
not every one can do this. they are not giving the license to have allocatoin out anymore. plus once fanatics the breakers will lose business unfortunetly

Most illuminating was their acknowledgment of “the stimulus” money. This boom will bust soon. Check back in a year, I’ll bet their out of business or sold out.
No offense to all their success but buying a steady established business is so much different then your average joe who has a passion, trying to start from scratch. The capital needed to put something this scale together. Isn't something the average guy has laying around in 2022. You also can't get boxes or cases of boxes like that in bulk for any price that makes u real money, without and established distributor. Which sounds tough to find when u start out. I think this is a completely wrong example of a person starting out. This is the exit goal for building a business here

I am surprised you keep this video up on your channel with no disclosure notice after finding out they ran a big scam and stole from customers and closed up their business.
I have some baseball cards 1990 would you like to buy
Quite inspirational video for us smaller guys! I love hearing a story like this.
Glad you enjoyed it Mainely Hockey Cards! Who is your favorite hockey player to collect? Which hockey teams do you mostly collect sports cards for? Thanks for sharing and we appreciate you supporting the channel and your local card store (lcs).
@@UpFlip My favorite player to collect has changed over the years, and while I can't say I definitely still have a clear-cut number one favorite, I think it's a toss-up between Peter Holland, Jay Bouwmeester, and Henrik Lundqvist. I mostly collect New York Rangers, too, as they're my favorite pro sports team. I will certainly continue to support the channel and my LCS. Thank you for the reply, and keep up the great work!
I’ve been to their shop twice now and I have to say….THEY ARE AWESOME! My kids, wife and I love to go there. They are so nice, real deal and honest just like he said in the video. They even have a Christmas tree with gifts underneath and let my kids choose one. They got graded cards, autographs, supplies and lots of packs from those gifts. One kid got an autograph Jersey!! I was like , “ holy crap!” So cool. Customers for life! Great selection on everything. You MUST go and visit.
We completely agree! Thank you for letting us know!
Well said Kenneth. Thanks for watching and supporting the channel!
People in general love to hear what they already know... For instance.."Telling a gorgeous lady that she's Beautiful"..or "Telling an Athlete who's elite how spectacular they are".
@@UpFlip The "well said" comment is particularly funny in this comment and you know why 🤣
The most awesome, informative video that I’ve ever seen, about anything! Thank you so much for making this. I’ve had in the back of mind about wanting to start my own sports card shop. I would love to make that happen. This video helped me understand a lot. Thank you!
Glad it was helpful Brian! Good luck if you do decide to start a local sports card shop (lcs)!
Fake. Like the other guy from Pawn Stars I think his name was Gary or whatever they're just trying to hype up the price along with shady backdoor deals lol. They don't really make all of what they claim.
This is a very real and honest small business interview Ken. Have you checked out any of our other business content or videos yet?
@@UpFlip You can't call scalping an honest business sorry but not sorry.
Easy to see why they are making so much money. The markup they are selling packs and boxes looks excessive! Can’t believe people are repeat customers. But it’s their money. And that’s in store. Probably a lot worse for online breaking.
I learned a lot...didn’t realize what all was involved with a shop like this. Great work!
Glad it was helpful Paul!
Hey, I know you! 🤣
@@nate1mizzou sorry?
@@pauljanicek1872 Corey and Paul! You’re famous in St Joe!
@@nate1mizzou hahahah, thanks for the shout out! Better than infamous!
Oh my god it's a card shop that still sells single packs. It's so awesome to see that. Bless them.
We loved to see that too! Thanks for stopping by!
Indeed! It was awesome to visit there.
Jimmy and Stacy are two of the best! SO excited to partner with them in bringing Cardscore to the Bellingham community!
We were very impressed with the Cardscore technology and are excited to where the future of the sports card market industry goes. Thanks for checking out the channel Cardscore Team and do keep us updated on your business journey!
@George Havonoc the house (Topps) always wins.
@George Havonoc they said they're only making 4-5k in profits? If so, thats friggin awful. I didnt catch that part.
@George Havonoc a 10 case of what? You've verified their pricing? If this is true, these 2 are the dumbest business owners ive ever seen. I cant even find $200 srp boxes for $300. Might be time to fly to WA
@George Havonoc (and im not trying to challenge your statements. Im just finding it baffling)
This guy's prices! Basically has a scalping shop.
Only problem is that i saw zero Pokémon cards!!!
Not sure if they do Pokemon or not. GO. Do you collect Pokemon cards?
UpFlip oya big time!
Yes Turf and Dirt has Pokémon- booster packs and boxes, ETBs and VBoxes - we don’t have singles just sealed packs and boxes
Kards Korner oh nice! Well thats good!
Great points letsgo Oakland. Only time will tell about the sports card market, industry and hobby. Thanks for sharing, supporting the channel and your local card store (lcs) and community businesses!
Way too many different types of card brands in each sport. Leaf, topps/100 and beyond.... going to burn out
Scalping. Plain and simple. Grab everything so actual collectors can’t, then flip em to those collectors and laugh all the way to the bank.
This didn't age well at all!
They rarely make videos like this anymore 😀. Very informative and motivating to the younger audience. I dwell in Pokemon cards but the information can be applied there too.
Thanks for the kind words Bodangers. Hopefully we can do a cool comic, MTG, Pokemon based local card store (lcs) in the near future.
You can have all my Pokémon cards
Thanks to Jim Sears for supporting a local Columbus Ohio business! Homage makes great throwback clothes, hit them up, support local!
Exactly. I usually go into a store with a budget and an open mind.
He really dropped a lot of specific information that most aren't comfortable sharing with the world.
We’re hoping it helps others grow too. Thanks for being here!
looking to start my own shop within a couple years! this video is what i needed!
It’s crazy
No cards from the 80s 90s. Kinda sad

750k in sales does not mean 750k profit
That is very very true Gem. 750k in sports cards sales absolutely does not mean no where near 750k in sports cards profit. That's a very good business point, thanks for sharing and supporting the channel Gem Mint!
Lint roll cards for fingerprints
I’ve heard the same things over and over like why such a long video
Started with 10k & 5k in the bank.. It’s just unbelievable!.. like I actually think they’re lying. What about CC debt?
$33 a pack for some score football and $60 a pack for some contenders draft picks lmfao no thanks, hey if your that interested i have 30 packs of score on ebay for WAAYYY LESSS
tough time to start a business at the very peak of the hype (2020), during the delusional period of this new market. if you pull 750k in the 2nd year ill be impressed. the market is correcting itself and return to hobby status very soon.
Mr F Card Art thanks for watching and sharing your thoughts! What did you think about the National Sports Card Convention being the biggest and best its ever been last week?
@@UpFlip the NSCC is always a plus for the hobby :))) the pictures we interesting to look at for sure :))) not much color at all, unfortunately :))) 90% adults not masked up and 90% of kids wearing masks :)) seems like a lot of people were ready to get out of the house after a year and a half of not traveling and/or congregating :))) thats just what I see, i know others look and see things i dont.
Im very curious to see what theyll be like in five years. They started a shop during the height of the recent card market. Plenty of shops in the 90s did well until the market crashed and they were left in the dust.
@@RetroGameBros yea no hate but this is not going to last. They capitalized off the new hype.
Guy works 80 hours a week; takes home 100,000k a year. Between him and his wife, they each make $50k. They should just get a regular job and enjoy life more. Thoughts?
Probably wouldn’t be as much fun for them. Gotta love something to put in 80 hours
The bulk of sales happened in Winter 2021 during the Once-in-A-Lifetime Card Spike, & now back to reality.
Did you go to the National Sports Card Convention last week TW? It was the biggest and busiest it has ever been in its long history.

@@UpFlip I have a couple signed rookies and a ton of LSU football rookies and a ton of nba cards… some joe burrow pink and black ice here and there some Justin Jefferson pink ice. Illusions/ refractors. Things like thisr
If they are new players you better sell now if that’s truly the value. Most if not all those new players won’t amount to shit. Making all there values be nothing in the future . If they are old cards at that value I would keep.
These two are amazing. This would be my dream job. I wish them nothing but success and happiness. Watching from Canada, Maybe one day I'll come visit. Keep up the good work guys 👍

To be in the hobby since I was 10 to now almost being 21 and to see the boom and fluctuation of prices and how much has changed throughout my 10 years is absolutely mind blowing. Most illuminating was their acknowledgment of “the stimulus” money. This boom will bust soon. Check back in a year, I’ll bet their out of business or sold out.
99% of megabox, blasters and fat packs have total garbage in them
No offense to all their success but buying a steady established business is so much different then your average joe who has a passion, trying to start from scratch.
