- Опубликовано: 18 авг 2019
- In this episode of our off grid cabin build series we are installing the OSB sheathing on an exterior wall. On our first wall we installed the OSB sheathing before we raised the wall, but on this one we are installing the OSB sheathing after having raised the exterior wall. It made it a whole lot lighter!

NEW HERE?
Thanks for stopping by our off grid cabin build channel. We recently moved from the city with all of its conveniences to the middle of the forest near Sandpoint, Idaho. On our channel, we are sharing our journey from grid life to an off-grid homesteading life. We are starting from scratch on bare land. I hope you will come and join us on this journey as we build our off grid cabin and establish our homestead. You can learn more about our story here (link to video)

I’ve been watching you guys for a few weeks and I love this channel KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK
Thank you. I’m glad you’re enjoying the channel. Do you have any questions that we could try and answer in a future video?
Congratulations the whole family is doing a amazing job
Many hands makes easy work. You are blessed.
Thank you. I think you are right.
Hey, I found your channel couple days ago and for now I love it, great project your family will grow so much from it.
Just a couple little thing, from a house builder here in Canada. I know code is not the same in the US but i’m sure sheating has to line-up with studs, you should let the first sheet pass the corner of the wall and cut it later. Also I know it’s too late but putting the headers just under the top plates is now the prefer way to build.
Other than this, you are doing incredibly well for someone that learn as he go with book.
I’ll keep watching you 👍
We actually don’t have any building code in our county. Plumbing and electrical yes but building no. Glad you are here and enjoying the journey. Hope to see you in the comments often.
Everyone is a great helper to work together, and enjoy life together
Thank you. We do enjoy being together.
Bonjour from montreal love your video's keep up the good work!!!
Glad we have some friends in Canada! Thanks for being here.
Wahh Semangat pak Martin. Tuhan Berkati keluarga Selalu🙏🙏
Gk kebayang itu Rumah, udah Asri, sejuk, udara bersih..gk sabar Nunggu DONE..jng lupa tumpeng Pak kalau udah beres..Becanda Pak.
Said nobody ever, “I hope it rains tonight” while framing lol
great team. can't wait to see finished.
Me too.
nice to see the family working together greeting from denmark
Denmark? Wow that is cool! How did you find her channel?
hi i am roofing & plumbing educated but have done everything on a house and i was looking for building when you showed up
Thanks for sharing your journey
You’re welcome. What is it that you like about the journey? I’m interested to know.
Martin, next time you are in Post Falls Idaho, stop at Ziggy's lumber store and pick up 3 books. They have a wealth of information and only cost around $7.00 each. There's one book for installing drywall, one for plumbing and the best book on electrical I have read. All are well written and easy to understand. They are available at the main counter in the store. You won't be disappointed.
Thanks for the info. I’ll check it out.
Great video!
Pak martin sangat menginspirasi...
Looks great! Go........go.....go team works
Thank you. We’re making pretty good progress.
Incrível muito bom👍👍👏👏
Oh wow.. it's coming together so great. I literally closed my eyes when Seth was using that nail gun right by Jules' ear.. but hey, she seems ok. ha ha. Also, props for being able to hang out so long for End game... We were literally at the very first 8am showing the day it came out.... and it came out first in Australia, so it was literally the first showing. ENJOY !!!!
It was a good movie. But not as good as I was hoping. I was disappointed that Iron Man and black widow died.
@@MartinJohnsonOffGridLiving Heck yes !!!!! That was way harsh !!! But BW at least is not entirely gone just yet as she's got a solo role prequel coming out soon.
thank you baby jesus for showing that you make mistakes!! So helpful when I'm self doubting!
We support you pak martin, klik iklan nya teman2
Nice work you are doing, on the dual stud between the windows, I would not have a seam in the osb, I would use a single piece, that would be better for when you mount the windows. Keep up the great work.
Thanks I really appreciate it. Do you have any more suggestions?
@@MartinJohnsonOffGridLiving I do ! after today's video, seeing the bathtub, I suggest you put in extra floor joist`s under the tub, so they are on 8" centers, like I saw others suggest under the parallel ( to the joist) walls, because you support one end with hangers, it should not be to difficult to do after the fact. I do not understand the weather where you are at, but I fear that the 4 pairs of vents for the crawlspace, are to close together, and will vent from one to the nearest other, and not throughout the whole space, you should research that locally. One last thing, before you fill in around the foundation I would lay down drain tile, draining downhill to daylight, I would also have done that on the inside of the foundation, but that is to late now, or your son is going to earn his keep, for a long time. Looking forward to the next video PS. PM me if you want something specific.
Put a couple of nails between the timber plate and brick work to let the sheet sit on, saves holding it up.
That is a good tip. Had I only known it sooner.
5:21 Good Job Seth
You guys are doing a nice job, thanks for sharing with us.
You’re welcome. I’m glad you’re enjoying the videos.
Semangat bapak johnson 😊
Stay strong and stay healthy. God bless family Johnson love from indonesoa😊💖💖💖💖👍👍👏👏👏💚💛💜❤😊☺😊😉😉
Thanks. You too.
Hi again I like to check my wall for straight with a string line before the trusses are delivered and plenty of bracing on the walls before they lift them onto the walls.
Thank you. we will make sure to do that before the trusses come.
Snap a line 4' up, you do not need to level every piece. Wasting time, winter is coming in northern Idaho. Good idea on door. Stay safe, how was movie?
Thank you for the tips. The movie was good but I was disappointed that Iron Man and black widow died. What did you think about the movie?
*Cool*
Look how cool seth is when he use that nail gun 😍😍
He’s really growing up?
Martin Johnson - Off Grid Living
He’d look better in safety glasses.
Loren Rickey with ear plugs and a hard hat too.

I agree ☝️
👍 good job
I don’t think you want the rain before the roof up🤔
Have fun at the movie 🍿 theatre
You guys deserve a break 👍
True. But if it’s going to rain I’d like to harvest some of it.
I'm really enjoying your videos. Do you have a video on you solar installation. Was your cabin size based on a code by the state. Keep it up and thank your hole family for great clean educational video.

how we cut out dors and windows here in Canada ,, we use a router with a 1/4" cutter bit with a roller bearing, fast clean and simple
On your first row of sheathing, it looked like you went a little below the base plate. How do you determine that measurement?
Keluarga yg bahagia..😊😊😊🙏🙏🙏👌🇮🇩
Nail pull tip, clamp it with a vice grip then pry the vice grip up and out
Good idea.
Thx for the video. What size OSB are you putting on, 7/16 or 1/2 ?
Have fun at the movies!
Thank you it was fun. Although I’m disappointed that Iron Man died.
@@MartinJohnsonOffGridLiving here's my truth. The last time I went to the movies my daughter was 10. She is now 31.. I dont have cable so I only watch about 10 channels. I have no ideal who iron man is. I was thinking of Seth when I said have a good time... but happy you also had a good time Martin. 😁
Does it matter what side the OSB is facing the outside? I noticed one side is a little shiny and the other side has lines.
Use a drill to put a hole in each corner of a window instead of a screw. One less step. Also when hanging wall sheathing/osb, place 2 nails partially driven into the bottom of the rim board to support the weight of the panel while it is being installed. Pull nails when done. And lastly, see if your nail gun will bump fire. That means holding the trigger down and bumping the nose of the gun into the wood/sheathing without releasing the trigger for each nail . The gun will fire a nail each time the nose makes contact. Be VERY careful using this method because when the trigger is held down the gun will shoot nails into anything that bumps into the nose including knees, hands and workers. Only ADULTS should use this method. Keep your finger off the trigger when you are not nailing. Test this method on a scrap 2x6 to get comfortable with this style of nailing. And NEVER,NEVER,NEVER have anyone stand behind the wall that you are nailing off in case a nail misses and sails through the air and be careful on a ladder when nailing. WEAR EYE PROTECTION WHEN NAILING!!! Not only for ricocheted nails, but tool exhaust with oil. Very dangerous to eyes. This will speed up wall sheathing.
on 2:50 yoiu could use a vice grip or pliers clamp on it than use prybar
So pak Martin, how do you get all the power tools there? It's decent tools though.
Use a vice grip on the nails or a metal handle framing handle cheating it back and forth using the claw in…
Hi what size osb are you using for the walls and for the roof
its crazy to hear this gentleman talking how " I don't know exactly how the stairs are going to be ............." yet the framing is already 50% done. Insane. I mean when I built even a small shed, I have to draw it and ensure everything is according to its blue prints................how can some one design and built a house like this...........I have no IDEA.
I just do it. It works out fine.
@@MartinJohnsonOffGridLiving hey, if it works for you. more power to you sir. as a designer,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,i'm holding to my seat very tight watching this video. :)
I can't wait...what the next videos?
Should be on Wednesday.
Will the bathroom also using wooden floor & wooden wall?
The walls will be sheet rock. But the flooring I’m not sure yet. Probably just the OSB subfloor for now. If you are from Indonesia I understand why that might sound strange. But here in America we keep our bathroom floors dry and the walls dry except for where the shower is.
I have used adjustable wrench for nails like that when every other method failed
Cool. I would like to know how are use an adjustable wrench like that. Sounds interesting.
@@MartinJohnsonOffGridLiving i just grab it tightly at the bottom of the nail and pried sideways then just move it back to the bottom of the nail and repeat you will make a circle out of the nail but you will get it out of course depends what kind of adjustable wrench you have
Invest in a tractor or backhoe. Should make your off grid life easier :)
Do you have any suggestions on how to raise the money for it?
Great family project....Why oh Why no use of personal protective equipment? You will learn about the ear damage only years later
but the eye damage is instant and cannot be fixed. The accidents with the mis-driven nails are a reminder that the very powerful
equipment can malfunction and damage a person much more than a piece of wood.
True. Thanks for the reminder.
If u put watèe inti that tank u need cover it or paint it or will grow algee.
If you get another nail like that. If you grab it with pliers and then use the hammer to take it out it would pull it out.
Thanks for the tip.
I prefer the stairs to be sideways from the right or on the left
Cool. We’ll see how it turns out.
Hey man. Got a Question a contractor added some OSB Sheathing to the exterior wall of my home.
I mentioned gapping between them and he didn’t seem to think it was necessary was that a bad idea him not gapping between each OSB board. It’s all covered in House Wrap so it won’t get wet from moisture and buckle.
looking nice. Remember ear protection
What did you say? Ha ha ha ha
Martin Johnson - Off Grid Living
He said;
“WEAR EYE PROTECTION”
I’m serious Martin. Construction accidents are not uncommon.
@@lorenrickey5481 i can handle getting dust in my eyes. But i cant ruin my ears with a saw next to me. and it hurts
Everyone should wear EAR and EYE protection. Sawdust isn't the only worry on a home build. Flying nails, pressurized air mixed with oil from the framing gun exhaust, falling wood supports with nails, flying wood splinters from the nail gun strikes, ect......
@@lorenrickey5481 when you shoot the nail close your eyes for a split second
Aren't there certain age restrictions to use the nail gun?
There is a parental exception to age restrictions for using potentially dangerous equipment. We wrote a blog article about training your children to use a chainsaw where we reference the laws pertaining to this. downtoearthhomesteaders.com/teaching-your-kids-how-to-cut-firewood/
Kid should be wearing safety glasses!
👍👍👍👍👍👍
I have a question for you Sir! Why American homes are built with wood? Even if the house has a stone masonry they were laid on top of a wood structure.
Compared to Indonesian homes which is built with concrete and bricks, and you've been living here in Indonesia. You've seen the difference.
Yes I have seen the difference. images.app.goo.gl/nSxbgHwh1iXgDoBPA
when you said "This Is The Wall"...
Trump would say:"It's YuuuUUUGE!"
Hopefully our border wall will be bigger and stronger.
Martin Johnson - Off Grid Living are you guys pro trump??
Elias Ziel I’m pro America and respect the presidency no matter who is in office.
👏👏👏☺️👍👍👍
Why not mark 4 ft then snap a chalk line
Where did you have to order roof trusses from ?
Trusstek
Martin Johnson - Off Grid Living
Could you mention cost when you install them please. I’m curious how much a room truss cost.
Loren Rickey I’ll try. But we will be publishing a complete expense report in a few months.

Nice hat, is it your merch?
Nope just a hat.
Martin why do you call your new house a cabin? Is the new construction your main house?
Pingin lihat jadi nya kaya apa. Lama bener pak Martin.
Why do people operate air nailers with out eye protection?
Why do people drive without a seat belt, eat sugar or drink alcohol. They are dumb.
clamp a vise-grip on the nail and pry on it..!!!
Where is Sarah?
Your over complicating the window and door cut out, next time your at the hardware store grab a flush trim bit for your router, 1/4" and it makes it very light work.
Thanks for the tip. Do you consider the rotary cutter a router? I don’t own a true router.
Home Depot has a ryobi router for less than 50 bucks, battery powered, it is so nice and makes trimming the windows and doors a snap
I am not an engineer but I do not think a 4" x 4" post is large enough to support the floor and interior walls for the long term.
Thanks. I’ll look into it.
Speaking of Endgame.. Considering their super powers AND personalities, which one superhero would you have to help you build your cabin?
...
...
...
Also, your answer might also determine the outcome of endgame since said hero would not be there to participate in the endgame..so think carefully :D
I guess Captain America because he has the best character and is very strong.
pakai tang pak
Sorry but with the way you're working you're not gonna be in the house before it gets cold . Don't know when you are doing your videos but you should be much further ahead than what you are showing . Already near the end of August . You should have had your walls done by now . Cold weather is not too far ahead . Hope you have some good heaters for the tents .
Well, our move in date is November 1st. It usually doesn’t snow a significant amount before then. But we will see.
pakai topi Seth nanti gosong loh
Put in an attic fold down door. Then you can put it anywhere in the house! Make the mess less. Now you do not have to plan for it!! It is very common in a new house! As a contractor I have put many in!I hate to see you lose so much space...... Just saying......
The attic will be used as a bedroom. And possibly an office and family room. It seems that a set of stairs might be better. What do you think?
How about safety glasses especially when your young son is using a nail gun how bout it dad.
Having a child using nail gun with no eye protection is terrible
