  • Metro-North Railroad's Mianus River Railroad Bridge (CP230) makes a "quick" opening on the morning of June 4th, 2021 for boat traffic heading out to the Long Island Sound from their docks at the Cos Cob Harbor in Connecticut.
    The Mianus River Railroad Bridge, also known as the Cos Cob Bridge or CP230, is a bascule bridge built in 1904 by the New York, New Haven & Hartford Railroad over the Mianus River, in Greenwich, Connecticut. The bridge carries Metro-North Railroad and Amtrak passenger trains as well as CSX and Providence & Worcester Railroad freight trains operating on the New Haven Line section of the Northeast Corridor (NEC). This bridge is unique as it is the only bridge on the entire electrified Northeast Corridor that does not contain wire on the moveable span. Instead, the catenary wire on each end has a gradual slope that guides the train's pantograph(s) to their maximum height so that they are gently extended for the gap on the span and lowered back to standard height on the opposite end. This allows electric trains to run through the gap without any extra action from the train's engineer.
    In this video you'll see 3 different angles of Metro-North trains operating over this unique bridge and an opening for boat traffic in a quick time-lapse. Be sure to pay attention to the pantographs at the top of each train. Enjoy!

    Excellent video, Gregory! It really is cool seeing the pans stretch out for the catenary gap. I think the most interesting thing about seeing the bridge in action is how the bascule span is separated into two different sections that open and close one at a time.

    Great video! May have preferred to see and hear the bridge opening in real time tho. Rather then speeding it up with music overlay. But still very cool!

      Thank you for the feedback! A full length video was my original plan but two factors deterred me from doing so;
      1. The opening process is over 10 minutes which is decent amount of time for a video.
      2. The best place to watch the opening (the spot the time-lapse was done) is a park/walking trail which resulted in a lot of background noise from people walking by, talking and a few that stopped to ask me about the bridge.
      Maybe I'll try to refilm and post a full unedited video if they do an opening in the evening. Thank you again for the comment!
