I was there that night and it was electric. I was there as a friend of the show visiting Questlove not planning to stay for the taping and he said to me “are you staying for the show?” And I said “no man, sorry I can’t.” And he looked me right in the eye and said “staaayyyyyy forrrrr the shoowwwww”. If I remember right that night the scheduled guests were the guy with the really deep eyes from Twighlight and Ricky Martin. I watched the whole show. It was good, but it wasn’t... you know. Really amazing. THEN The announcer guy (I should go look up his name for this story but I am making a hamburger right now) walked back up as taping was finishing and said “everyone please stay in your seats.” “Sometimes, because of scheduling we have to tape a guest on a night it isn’t on the show. And tonight is that night so if you can hang tight, the show is going to be another 10-15 minutes” This was obviously very very exciting. Jimmy went back and changed suits. Came back on stage and no one knew who the band was going to be. (The Stipe you see in this video was cut in later) But he comes back just like he’s doing the show. Says a few words and then.... INTRODUCES RADIOHEAD. And I would like to say it was an eruption but it was more shock. Everyone was already done watching the show. They had come to NYC for this thing and it was over and it was great. AND NOW here’s fucking Radiohead. Don’t get me wrong, people clapped. But the people that clapped were the people that didn’t even know Creep. They were like “I’ve heard of Radiohead” “cool”. And everyone else was like OH SHIT!!!! And then they came out and played this. If I’m not mistaken (...again hamburger...) this was like 2 months after the album came out. So the heads knew it. Many other fans didn’t. And it was transcending. Which I don’t mean in the colloquial way. But in the literal way. In 20 seconds of singing, we were all together in a tiny submarine sinking to the bottom of the ocean. Ok, maybe it wasn’t that for everyone - BUT NO ONE WAS IN NYC. Let alone 30 rock. Let alone a show. That’s not the end of the story that night but I’m hungry.
super fun retelling of your experience. What Beautiful and Divine luck!!! I return to this version again and again.. thanks for sharing the background, I have always wondered why it seems not many are in the audience.
MayorHundred I completely agree with you, but have you heard the audience recordings of their concerts? Sadly, this is not how it usually goes. There's always an idiot talking the ear off of someone during the whole damn show.

I am 70yo now. This song, originally sung at the end of my teenage years carries so many memories. I feel as though I am back there: my health and mobility are back, my young, beautiful girlfriend Pippa, the feeling that the whole world is still before me; my sense of purpose (so strong at 19 and on the edge of Vietnam). Disillusionment and heartbreak inevitably followed, but, for just six months, the world was amazing. Thank you for reminding me of that time 50 years ago. God bless you both.
I really get close to cry when he gets too the "I think I've had my fill in your arms''.That lines represents such a fucking complacent feeling about nostalgia and solitude and it all. Love this song.
Michael Stipe, Jimmy Fallon, Thom Yorke and Jonny Greenwood. How much talent gathered. So much talent gathered. Cameras and audio can't capture Radiohead's song and Thom's voice. Thom Yorke is an angel. Thom Yorke is biblical.
Love the expression on the woman's face in the front row at 4:40 like 'damn, i'm actually impressed by these old geezers!' Not surprising since Yorke is basically Aslan with the voice of an angel.
Our little island somehow punches way way above its weight when it comes to great bands/music talent. There's a lot of social pain ,thank God this is a by product. Peace n love ♡
i gotta say in this video Yorke is like the pregnant woman putting all the work in, his vulnerable voice at times even sounding like a woman in pain, Greenwood is like the overlooking father providing support and keeping an eye on the mother to make sure everything is ok.
The point is - this metaphor is as ridiculous as it is useless. But yeah... The guy had every right to come up with it and post it here. I certainly don't hold it against him. If anything it elicited some chuckles or raised eyebrows, which is more than I can say of other comments over the web.
Don’t haunt me Don’t hurt me Don’t haunt me Don’t hurt me Gather up the lust and soul In your arms In your arms Gather up the pitiful In your arms In your arms What seems impossible In your arms In your arms I think I have had my fill In your arms In your arms I think I should give up the ghost In your arms In your arms
Ballsy performance by a couple of veteran rock legends. 60% of the band is missing and they play a song that vamps on the same simple pattern forever. But this song is all about the tension buildup all releasing at 3:22 - even if only for a few seconds, it's still one of those goosebump-inducing chord changes that only Radiohead could pull off. And to think - this little ditty is probably like their 50th best song. It's like they're just toying with the audience, saying 'we don't really care what you think, because we can still make you melt with our songwriting prowess.'
It is not so much that this "not the place for a song like this". It is the fact that the Fallon audience on the previous show as well as the new show really are "golf clappers" (devoid of any real understanding; fake). They fall right in with Jimmy Fallon.
Alex Pack im kinda with you on the surprise of seeing him w/o the tele but thats literally the only other guitar he'll pick up and he's had it with him since ok computer so i let it slide whenever he use that one in its stead lol
Ricky Dobbs He actually uses this guitar pretty often. He always uses it in a couple songs in most concerts. I'm kind of shocked you guys haven't seen it before; it's probably his second most used guitar.
+jjboog45 Second most used of two guitars xD He tends to use the Starcaster and a Les Paul for the classical stuff he does when he's not doing Radiohead.
@mind biz -maybe spending your days writing some of the best music of our time for a living is more worthwhile than worrying about having a generic, sheep hair cut trimmed once a month so you look like everyone else??
Alex Pack either direction would be better than what they are doing now. johnny's playing indian yodel music, and thom's clicking away in cakewalk with his ponytail swinging wildly around. it's sad when your favorite band gets old. but, it always happens. tool, rem, nine inch nails, now radiohead. old ppl just aren't relevant. it's a shame. the only guy that stayed relevant his entire career is stanley kubrick. but, who am i to judge. they were the best band in the world for a really long time. they made great music that enriched my life and inspired me. so, they can do whatever they want.
jtbedazzle I agree with most of that. On every album Radiohead have made post-OK computer, the rockier track with the guitars always sells the best. Optimistic, I Might be wrong, there there, bodysnatchers, and their least successful album the king of limbs had no rocky tracks at all. Coincidence? Nah.
he's actually keeping Ed in that box on the floor and making him do the backing vocals
he steps on him to keep him motivated. the reason for this being that a whip was difficult to use while playing guitar

Glad to see a jimmy Fallon audience had the patience for a song like this
When Radiohead is playing, you shut the hell up and let them play.
+MayorHundred truer words have never been spoken.
MayorHundred I completely agree with you, but have you heard the audience recordings of their concerts? Sadly, this is not how it usually goes. There's always an idiot talking the ear off of someone during the whole damn show.
+MayorHundred Amen
He had to do a lot of laughing and clapping to make up for it.
...and people ask me why Radiohead is my favorite band.
Exactly
So why are they your favorite band? There's a lot of really good bands out there compared to this group.
Delete this.
Next question...because clearly they don’t understand. 🎶❤️🎶
That's True
Jimmy Fallon looks so happy to be sitting with Michael stipe whilst 2/5ths of Radiohead perform one amazing song. Completely understandable.
He really likes good music...
Thom w/ a looper doing layers of vocal harmony w/ himself...WOW! Very talented man.
Sweet Jesus, that is beautiful.
He is one the few artist I have heard that when he does live sounds like just as good actual songs... Love the basement stuff pure talent
Andre Slater If not even better!
How do I read this
@@MauFerrusca especially true with TKOL basement. So much energy throughout the session compared to the album version.
Such a raw, exposed vocal; heartfelt loss.
Its a simple song(for Radiohead) but damn it's very heartfelt and emotional.

simple my ass try to play it
“simple”
Completely agreed man
I cannot listen to this without crying.
you're not kidding---every time I hear it they start coming! flat-out, unreal song.
Yeah I kinda wan to Cry too...cause it sucks so bad :P
ha
Radiohead only for people with some brain to draw from. beautiful song this one like most songs of theirs.
@@aes00703 Pinhead.
Good to see that Jonny Greenwood is so relaxed on stage now that he even finds time to check his facebook while Thom is still playing at 4:22
xD
+Declan McDonnell He was stopping the background vocal/kick track Thom was singing over
+Jake Gren Do you know the meaning of the word 'joke'?
+Declan McDonnell Lol calm down princess
+Jake Gren 👏🏻💩
Thom Yorke's voice makes my heart hurt sometimes :(
radiohead, the only band actually better live than recorded, and with 2/5 of the man power
nope its 6/6 (include nigel godrich)
rnystratoholic 7 if you include Clive Deamer
Clive wasn't there when they recorded pablo honey, the bends, ok computer, hail to the thief & in rainbows
rnystratoholic I'm not taking anything away from Nigel. He's definitely a member imo. Just giving Clive some credit. I love him with Radiohead.
wes K acoustic guitar and electric guitar if that's what you mean

Tf😭
Seems fairly unlikely given that it was first performed in 2010
also unlikely because that means you heard this in 1972, and thom yorke was 4 then.
Hahahahaha brilliant
I really get close to cry when he gets too the "I think I've had my fill in your arms''.That lines represents such a fucking complacent feeling about nostalgia and solitude and it all. Love this song.
This is the absolute best performance of this song they've done. I wish there was a higher quality rip of this video.
You should see the one thom did solo at Cambridge!
i want someone to look at me the way johnny looks at thom at 0:40
Over 5 years ago already, fuck ..
Dear God, I love this guys so much. It's impossible listen to this and doesn't cry.
I love that Michael Stipe just appears to see the performance.
Jonny in a shirt and jacket! So nice :)
this is the longest ive watched fallon
Almost made me cry. Thanks for the great upload.
My hands are placed in my chest while listening to this. What a feeling. Thank you, Radiohead
the end is over.. beautiful song..beautiful band..RADIOHEAD!!! legends
It's interesting - the sound mixing here is atypical for them and showcases the sheer beauty behind reverb and more perfected mixes
This is an emotional masterpiece, a full body experience... beyond language
so incredibly powerful and otherworldly. One of the best performances i have seen.. from anybody.
Unbelievably beautiful performance of a great song
Beautiful song. Just beautiful 😢😢😢
sheer genius. peaking with the single utterance of the title phrase
I've never seen Jonny so cleaned up.
Best Neil Young cover EVER!...Yes - I know it's an original, but the "Ghosts" has got to be Neil!
LoL. That made me laugh out loud. You're clever. :)
Thom is a massive Neil Young fan.
Good one.
Michael Stipe, Jimmy Fallon, Thom Yorke and Jonny Greenwood. How much talent gathered. So much talent gathered. Cameras and audio can't capture Radiohead's song and Thom's voice. Thom Yorke is an angel. Thom Yorke is biblical.
wow what a great performance
finally jimmy presented this amazing band
you can see what radiohead's songs can do when you see an audience just smiling after they finished.
This was actually beautiful
this makes me emotional. in a good melancholic way
Thom and Jonny always a stellar performance.
dont get much better than that. incredible.
I really love these guys.
Love the expression on the woman's face in the front row at 4:40 like 'damn, i'm actually impressed by these old geezers!' Not surprising since Yorke is basically Aslan with the voice of an angel.
That's 'geezer' for those of us under 25 (jk) Thom looks like a proper sage though you have to admit
FacePlant Chill the fuck out
Gabriel Gan look at him now
Beautiful.

Agreed on your little island. It really is amazing. Thanks, and hope you'll give is more.

Fucking pompous bullshit, no offence but that's silliness right there. Have a good evening.
The what what!?!?
HAHAH What the fuuuuck?
Yes. Let's keep the ridiculous metaphors. There would be nothing else to say about this performance otherwise.
The point is - this metaphor is as ridiculous as it is useless. But yeah... The guy had every right to come up with it and post it here. I certainly don't hold it against him. If anything it elicited some chuckles or raised eyebrows, which is more than I can say of other comments over the web.
Jimmy got lucky with this. Legends.
This was one of my favorites on the KOLs tour.
WTH that's the shortest hair i've seen on jonny!!!
This song is the scense of Radiohead, Thom Yorke is the most emotional songwriter.... All, everything, alll
better than the album versiom
On album version I miss the more emotional "don't hurt me, don't haunt me" in the end.
Don’t haunt me
Don’t hurt me
Don’t haunt me
Don’t hurt me

Anyone think it sounds like a Neil Young song?
