    Great video. My fiancé and I are building all new enclosures for our animals starting with our Jackson’s chameleon. He recently just had to go to the vet because one of his feeder insects (superworm) bit the inside of his mouth. We didn’t know at the time but his lower jaw went and swelled with puss very quickly. Luckily our vet could see him right away. There was a little opening where the infection started from the bite so the vet used that for the incision and pushed out the puss, also have him a shot. Sadly his jaw was dislocated from the puss pushing the jaw so he’s on liquid calcium with D3 and liquid antibiotics. We also have to the syringes to hand feed him beef baby food and water to prevent him from opening his mouth as much as possible so that his jaw can heal up properly. So far he’s doing great still keeping his weight, taking the medicine, calcium, food, and water very well, and he only has slight swelling left in the jaw area. The vet said this is actual very common with chameleons.

    This answered a ton of questions I had. I fell in love with a veiled chameleon at local expo and my mom really like him too but I didn't have very much knowledge about them so I decide not to get him. I am doing a ton of research and maybe at ths next expo I can get one. I was wondering if you could keep them outside in good weather. I live in Louisiana which has super high humidity and for a large part of the year stays at 80° or higher. In the winter it will get to about 40° some days but I could bring it in then.

    • @Chumley-yr1jg
      @Chumley-yr1jg 4 года назад

      That should be okay during the day with supervision. You want to have a basking spot about 85°-95° and a cool spot 72°-80°. At night a temp drop is good but you don’t want anymore than below 40° preferably no lower than 45°. If you can roughly manage these conditions with either supervision or a very secure cage to prevent predators like birds, cats, coyotes anything like that from getting to them. When/if you do get a Cham I hope you enjoy them!

    We were given a veiled chameleon (guy that gave us him said he was maybe 6 months old but he was really small and has doubled in size in the 4 months we've had him.) We noticed after a month or so that he doesn't drink from the dripper or drops on leaves. We would change the dripper daily and had it dripping on leaves and vines above a small glass fish tank. He would head straight pass the drip water and to the standing water he pooped in to drink. We still try to use the dripper, but he will still head straight past it and drink out of the 20 gallon fish tank we put in. (Added a filter, no there isn't fish in it)

    Overall good summary. I breed several chameleon species. Cage material is no longer an issue as long as you have appropriate airflow. Glass, pvc and screen all work as long as you have a screen top and a path for the air to get on near the bottom front. I realize this video is two year old. Pothos is a great chameleon plant

    I have a very important question 😅 I know you said that you could go with a bigger encloser for a small chameleon as long as you have enough foliage, but what if the baby falls? My friends sisters chameleon has all four of her legs broken because the previous owner had a big enclosure and it fell. Do you know how I would prevent that? Should I get smaller vines if possible or just enough foliage so the chameleon won't fall and hurt itself

    I was wondering are Outside terrariums recommended ? more if you live in a tropical environment? That way it gets the light it needs and also having another Terrarium inside the house for raining days what are your thoughts to it? I'm quite interested in chameleons but wanna be very prepare (likely will get a little more time and keep searching info)

      Steven Irrizarry Outdoor setups can be amazing if you live in an area that supplies to proper temps. If it gets too cold outside, it maybe best to bring the animal inside and use heating and uvb instead. If you live in a tropical climate, it can majorly benefit the chameleon to get that natural sunlight and uvb! You’ll still want to make sure to mist the animal down on dry days and keep it hydrated!

      @@reptiliangarden Ho yes i like the idea and the best of all is that I can enlarge it's territory so it can have more space. Also since I live in a tropical island I think it will work very smoothly. Obviously I will have his own Terrarium inside the house for those raining days. But for now I will keep searching more information to be prepared on care and tips to give them a good life. And thanks for the reply :D

    I just got a 6 week old veiled chameleon from someone who couldnt take care of him anymore, they gave me a 3foot tall mesh enclosure, but they have him in a glass enclosure right now. Right now hes struggling with a pretty bad Calcium Deficiency which i hear is common. Im familiar with a lot of reptiles as ive had snakes and lizards for a long time, but this seems to be way different. is there a website or forum for me to go to get help and ask questions that you would suggest? im trying to get him moved into the mesh container as quickly as possibly but i only got him on october 2nd an its taking some time. hes also not really eating as much as i expected, how much should a young male be eating?

    Hi! I’m looking into getting a panther chameleon by spring time hopefully, I want to be as prepared as possible before I get one tho! But because I’m new to researching, I just found your channel and love your content!! Exactly how do you clean off the plants and how do you feed them so nothing is toxic to the chameleon? Also do you use a substrate?

      I recommend getting some books and read through them for all of the info you need.... they do not need substrate unless you have a female and she will need a nesting box for egg laying they still lay eggs even if they haven't been bred

    I love this video so much and have been binge watching them because I have a baby chameleon and want to give him the best care that I can. Please help me with these two questions because I have been researching and getting mixed answers: 1) I bought my chameleon a linear light, because I heard this was the best one.. but do I also need a basking light for him or is the linear light alone fine? 2) Do you believe that it is better to not include any flooring in the bottom of the cage because of respiratory issues?

    • @MaverickTyler
      @MaverickTyler 4 года назад

      1) yes a basking light is also required even if you have an uvb bulb, uvb give off minimal heat but it’s necessary for the chams to absorb calcium and help their bones grow to their potential size (: and then 2) soil substrate is optional, I just think as long as you have the time to clean it and make sure the soil isn’t moldy or just becoming really messy then it’s ok. I have a bio active enclosure with soil but I set aside a couple hours every week to maintain it. The respitory issues only come if the soil is too wet and soggy
