well, get your money ready because Garmin is the king of the minor incremental upgrade. They even beat Apple at this game.....and they are big enough to feel zero presure .
Thanks for making this video... I had the official update e-mail from karoo, but you properly explain the practical application. Heatmaps is the reason I pay for my strava, so I can use it for route planning. If they could intergrate the Suntoo heatmaps into their own planner, I could cancel that subscription. But I believe that's not the case.. Anyway, brilliant device as it is. Thanks again!
Interesting, but i wonder if they'll manage to pull of heat based routing. Strava tries to score roads based on (amongst other info I guess) how frequently the road was used during a loop (filtering out a-b/commutes). Heat alone is not the best way to navigate I'm afraid
So, almost 1 year later. Did they expand upon this partnership? Is it still live? Might buy a Karoo 2, but it depends on the Suunto partnership due to the ability of seeing training stats after the bike ride. Because without the partnership there isn't a good free way of doing that right?
Interesting observation about map sizing - I've downloaded the entire Suunto heat map of California and it was only around 70 mb. There were not a lot of suggestions beyond the major cyling routes. This suggests that there are far fewer data points in the US compared to Europe. Probably because there are not too many Suunto users in the US?
Suunto's map and routing is pretty neat now that I have tried it (without having a Karoo 2 yet). Is that really not available on the web only as a phone app?
Kinda cool. I was about to ask if this works without routing (since I hardly ever ride pre-defined routes) but I am happy to see it does. Actually, weird it does NOT work with routing :D 1) If you plan a route though, do you still see the heatmap so that you could eventually make a detour? 2) since the heatmaps are actually bigger in size, can you just download the heatmaps? Or they are only a well detailed layer? I am also curious how this works in less bike-crazy countries, cities, like Budapest here. (it's not the end of the world but far from Amsterdam from a cycling perspective)
1) Correct, the heat map is always available to toggle on or off, I show it briefly but didn’t verbally mention it when I recorded. It’s just the little fire icon on the screen, instant and quick. 2) the heatmap files are actually secondary, effectively a layer atop it.
Could ya please explain eventually how creating route in suunto app would work with hammerhead? They sain it’s available however I still only see option “ use in watch “ not use In Karoo2 option… thx and thx for great video as usual! Cheers
Friends with benefits? Not even kidding. I was doing a bit of cleaning in another room and had the sound up, and just the context of that saying with this being a video about electronics....that made me laugh out loud. In related news: Hammerhead is just on a meteoric rise, eh? Impressive stuff.
@@Dcrainmaker I would not say you’re behind with all this encyclopaedic tech review content production you’re pulling lately. I just need ;) your review before choosing the Inreach mini 1 or de 2 for a couple of summer adventures. Thank your for all this amazing work!
No need to have a Suunto device at all. Just set up a Suunto account on the app. On your HH account you need to authorize your Suunto account like you do with Strava to access the features.
Is this a Suunto Hammerhead update, or a Suunto and Hammerhead update? I don't have, nor have a present need for, anything Suunto. Based on the video, it's unclear if I need a Suunto watch to activate the Hammerhead heat maps.
Yeah, tons of useful reasons. And plus, I’d argue if you know all the roads, then navigation in general on a device like this isn’t probably super useful for you anyway. ;)
The Karoo has been getting some interesting updates lately.
Wow that’s so neat! I swear the 540 and 840 will have to be pretty damn impressive, otherwise I will be a Hammerhead convert.

YES! I’ve got a hammerhead that my wife didn’t want and she kept her Garmin. I need to hide this video so she doesn’t change her mind…
🤣
Great to see this sort of collaboration
It is nice to see two companies cooperating

Drat! As an owner of both, I was hoping Hammerhead would tie up with Coros watches.

hi Ray, did you also tested the Suunto heatmap in combination with the Karoo v1 ?
I get the feeling it is only for the Karoov2...

Would really love Sram to partner with Strava so we could do the same thing with Strava heatmaps.

You are keeping busy!
Inreach2 coming soon??
Yeah, I’m a bit behind on the inReach video and review. Been using it, but need a few days in the middle of nowhere.

Hi, does that mean that the data for the Suunto heatmap originate from Strava? This would be a huge reason to go for Karoo...
No, it’s only from Suunto’s recorded activities.
Does Karoo integrate with Garmin's radar-light yet like wahoo bike computers do?
Yup!
Does this work for off-road trails??
So I have no Suunto devices but I guess I could have a Suunto account right? 🤔

@@cliveastman6448 - I just went through that process and it seems to work well. 👌
Is this like the heat maps on my Suunto 7?
Roughly, but far more practical in that you can quickly download entire countries.
@@Dcrainmaker oh. That's not an issue for me. Thanks for explaining!
Cool… Garmin is getting way behind day by day… the are on a kind of stand-still hibernation
Disappointing that I need to create yet another account just to view a map overlay.

No need for a Suunto watch. Just a free Suunto account.
@@stevewinchell2220 thanks!
Can't see the big deal on the heat maps..the map works as it does right now
Heatmaps will give you a heads up on popular routes you might be missing. Pretty cool feature for when your out on the road exploring.
@@danielsaunders563 Yes i see your point but i know EVERYWHERE within a 200ml squre ml radius, in my area so for me, no

@@Dcrainmaker Ray, most cycle computer designers get it wrong, guess you need good maps but how many actually ride out of their area?
Please speak slowly!
You can use the Playback Speed option under Settings in RUclips to slow the video down. I believe his pacing is intentional.
Good idea
RUclips videos are better when they're short and sweet.
I think the speed is fine..
