Supreme Executive power can only be derived by a mandate from the masses, not from some farcical aquatic ceremony. Whenever I get to this scene I always think of the scene in ‘This Is Spinal Tap’ when the band has arrived at a hotel to find the whole entourage has only been booked with one room. In the chaos of the moment the fish-bowl glasses wearing concierge bleats a half-shocked, half-indignant “I’m just as God made me.” line when referred to as a ‘twisted old prune’ by the band’s manager when he’s arguing with the hotel manager. That's a lot of stone you'd have to haul to that tiny island. Anyway, I looked it up, and its real name is Castle Stalker located in Scotland. Wrong. The Monty Python team, John Cleese, Michael Palin and the rest, were strongly influenced by the Goon Show, a radio comedy show of the 1950s written by Spike Milligan, with Harry Secombe and Peter Sellers. It was surrealist comedy. And there are those who claim that the Goons were inspired by another group of anarchic comedians, this time a group of American vaudeville comics - the Marx Brothers (they really were brothers) who moved into Hollywood films in the 1930s. There's nothing new under the sun...

John Cleese, Eric Idle, Terry Gilliam and Michael Palin constantly play different roles but you never feel like you’re watching the same actors with these characters. Graham Chapman and Terry Jones really are the glue of this movie as King Arthur and Sir Bedivere. They are both hilarious yet somehow keep the movie just grounded enough to make you follow them as the main characters. RIP to both of them. They were really incredible. Monty Python in their series were well known for not ending sketches. Some mixed into animation by Terry Gilliam. When they were first making the series they were trying to come up with a title. One of the titles they considered was "Owl Stretching Time". But the BBC had it written into the budget as "Barry Took's Flying Circus". Barry Took was a comedy writer for the BBC. So they came up with the name Monty Python as a kind of fictional slimy agent. And so they became Monty Python's Flying Circus.

In the beginning there was a TV series that ran for 4 series (1968 to 1974) and it was called "Monty Python's Flying Circus" It was a sketch show and some sketches just faded out into the next sketch and some just had a link of a man at a desk saying "And now for something compleyely different". Over the years people just referred to it as Monty Python. The basic group is John Cleese, Eric Idle, Graham Chapman, Terry Jones, and Michael Palin with animations by Terry Gilliam. Their first film was just a series of sketches from the show and was called "And Now For Something Completely Different" (1971). Then came "Monty Python And The Holy Grail" (1975), then "Monty Python's Life Of Brian" (1979) and then "The Meaning Of Life" (1983).

I can't express how excited I was when I got the notification that you were reacting to Monty Python and The Holy Grail!!!
I first saw this movie when I was 11 years old (it was 1983 and I rented it on VHS) and even though at that age some of the jokes went over my head, it was still absurd and silly enough to make me laugh over and over again at it (of course as I got older, more and more of the jokes I started to understand)!!!
My favorite line is "are you suggesting that coconuts migrate"?.... it never fails!!!
It's probably been said already but the ending is a literal "cop out"!!!
John Cleese couldn't remember the Enchanter's name and just said "there are some who call me.....Tim" and it stuck.

If the film was particularly long there would be a 15 minute intermission for people to go to the loo and get sats and drinks etc. Credits were switched to the end of films when directors wnted to surprise the audience with a particular actor in the film or for the audience to guess who the atcor in the prosthetics was.

So in the scene where the Black Knight gets his leg lopped off, he actually IS being played by a one legged man (he's played by John Cleese for the rest of the scenes before and after). Apparently Cleese just kid not stand on one leg.
Sir-Not-Appearing-In-This-Film is actually played by the (at the time) infant son of one of the actors.
'It's only a model' the castle in that scene actually WAS a model. Iirc they couldn't get permission to film in it (honestly, the fact that this movie got made t all is impressive given how it sounds like filming was just plagued with so many production issues)
Monty Python is the name of the comedy group. So, same actors (if you pay attention you can see them playing multiple roles in this movie alone) but different characters.

It's basically a really serious LARP. Hence the police part, guy with modern shaving cream, holy hand grenade, and "that rabbit is dynamite!" Gunpowder hadn't been introduced to the west yet.

Jules, you are so awesome. You are the ONLY person in my life that ever realized that the cops were trampling "the shrubbery" in the scene where they set off the Holy Hand Grenade, or that there was another boat in the water when Arthur made it to the Castle Aaargh. That includes me and my brother, who watched this film many times and all the reactors that've reacted to it (50+).
BTW, the ending (a joke) was a literal "cop-out".
Month Python is the comedy troupe, and each member always plays multiple roles, which is sort of a game to see if you can recognize each time they play another character. They started off as a British sitcom in the early 70's and then made films. However, they never had a lot of money to spend, hence the cheap props, including the coconuts instead of horses ... well, except the one. Most people never realize that NONE of King Arthur's men could have been the one who killed the "Famous Historian" because he HAD a horse and none of them dd.
For your next foray into MP, I hope you do Life of Brian. It's one of my most favorite comedies, as far as films go. This one was my 2nd favorite of theirs, BTW, and I DO love it ... and you 🥰🌹😳.

@@julesreacts BTW, their TV Series (BBC) was called Monty Python's Flying Circus, and it was "out there" but some of their funniest skits were born there, like The Dead Parrot Sketch, The Argument Clinic, The Lumberjack Song, The Fish-Slapping Dance, The Ministry Of Silly Walks, The Spanish Inquisition, Cheese Shop, Nudge Nudge, Hell’s Grannies, Fish License and Spam.
Also, it is good to note that Graham Chapman played the lead role in all of their movies. After he died (young), the rest of the troupe went off and did some very impressive movies with other actors like, A Fish Called Wanda (Hilarious, John Cleese, Michael Palin, Jamie Lee Curtis).

The Life of Brian is another popular movie funded by George Harrison (of The Beatles).

This is a very old favorite of mine. I was stationed in England during Monty Pythons heyday. Don't take them too seriously they certainly don't. It helps to be slightly drunk while watching. Very quick and they take no prisoners. Everyone gets a poke and tickle. Their "Life of Brian" is a great spoof. Any of their weekly skit shows are quite good. A few of the skits to be sure to see are "The dead Parrot/Lumberjack sketch". "The Uppercrust twit of the year". The "Paid argument" "The fish slap dance", "Defense when being attacked with a Banana". I have seen one reactor watch each of the weekly shows through all the seasons. Very fun group.

What I love about this movie is the way a lot of the comedy comes from sheer necessity. The whole thing about the coconuts and swallows, which becomes vitally important at the end, was due to not being able to afford horses. The whole running story about the police investigating the historians murder, culminating in their interfering with the attack on Castle Aaaarrgghh!, was because they'd run out of money and couldn't think of any other way to end the movie. Even things like Tim the Enchanter were due to wanting to use as little film as possible; Cleese had forgotten the long, complicated name they gave the enchanter, so ad-libbed Tim, which the crew simply ran with, likely in order to avoid reshoots. (This last one is a theory based on a half remembered interview from a long time ago. I could be wrong).

The name came from the original TV show which was randomly called 'Monty Python's Flying Circus' (working title was 'Owl Stretching Time') and continued with the same 6 main actors through to the current day. (Graham Chapman died, "Let me the first at this funeral to say 'Oh, F**k" ) Terry Gilliam went on to direct films like Brazil and Twelve Monkeys, and Cleese went on with wife Connie Booth ('She's a witch') to write and star in " 'Fawlty Towers'. Michael Palin filmed several trips around the world going to unusual places, (e.g. 'Pole to Pole') .

A lot of the best jokes in this movie are because of the budget. Two examples are:
    1) The coconut horses: They literally could not afford the horses they would have required, and came up with the gag of prancing along to the sound of coconuts
    2) "There are some who call me . . . Tim": John Cleese, who played the pyromancer, was supposed to have a ridiculously long and complex name. When the time came to film, however, John completely forgot what the name was. You can see the look of panic in his face in that scene. He ad-libbed with 'Tim' on the spot and they couldn't afford to reshoot

Yes, it was actually a requirement that came about between studios and various unions, basically because everyone wanted their name at the start so audiences would see them. George Lucas did indeed put his credits at the end of Star Wars and incurred several fines because of it, but the movie was so successful, he didn't bother to change them. It took a few years, but renegotiations eventually got studios to okay putting the credits at the end.

Yay! Since your "Firefly" reactions ended I've missed watching your reactions but now you're back reacting to one of my all-time favorite movies! Cuz I'm old af, I saw this in the theatre when it first came out and it literally changed my life, which is evident from all the stuff I have at home related to the film: Funko Pop figures of King Arthur, the Black Knight (I have the special edition with his arms cut off), the French taunter, and Tim the Enchanter (which includes a small white rabbit). I also have a framed copy of the instructions for the Holy Hand Grenade written out in medieval calligraphy; a cross-stitch piece of the quote "Death awaits you all with big sharp pointy teeth" on it and the rabbit with blood dripping from its mouth; a bottle of "Monty Python and the Holy Ale" which was brewed and released at some point; the script in book form, a t-shirt; and the bluray DVD special edition. Oh, and a card game based on the film. So ... yeah, that's where I stand with this this film. Hopefully you'll watch "Life of Brian" at some point, as well, along with some of their sketches (which you should watch even if you don't film the reactions). The Pythons definitely paved the way for "The Young Ones" (Vyvian, you complete and utter bastard!) and many other great British comedians and shows. All of the Pythons went on to do other great things and I strongly suggest "Fawlty Towers" with John Cleese; "A Fish Called Wanda" with JC and Michael Palin (and Jamie Lee Curtis); and then there are the fantastic films that Terry Gilliam (the only American in MP) directed, especially "Brazil", "Time Bandits", "The Fisher King" Jeff Bridges and a fantastic performance by Robin Williams; and "12 Monkeys" with Brad Pitt and Bruce Willis. Thanks for a great reaction!

Monty Python began with a BBC TV show called "Monty Python's Flying Circus," which was a comedy sketch show. There's a RUclips MP channel where you can watch many of their sketches, including "The Cheese Shop," "The Lumberjack Song," "SPAM," "The Argument Clinic," "The Ministry of Silly Walks," "The Dead Parrot Sketch" or my personal favorite, "The Fish Slapping Dance." I have no idea why I love that sketch so much, and it's just over a minute in length, but just thinking about it is making me laugh. I first saw this movie back in the late 70s at a Midnight Movie, and we wound up going back, over and over again to see it! This movie has some of the best lines to quote to your friends, and get everyone laughing! And yes, you're right, the comedy "troupe" was named "Monty Python" and their MPFC TV show was shown in the US on public broadcasting networks, often later at night, and it became huge over here as well.
