A fantastic world building touch that slips by a lot of people is when Furiosa talks about crossing the salt. She says they can ride for 160 days. They're talking about the ocean. The world is so fucked up that the oceans are even drying up.
Fun fact: The director asked his wife to edit the movie, feeling that because she'd never edited an action movie before, she would approach it with a different eye than any other editor. And she did. And she won an Oscar for it.

As for why Max leaves at the end, the series has been described as a bunch of people sitting around a campfire telling legends of the great Mad Max--he can't stay in one place, because he's constantly being called to do good elsewhere, even if he doesn't always want to. He is, as he said in the beginning, "a road warrior looking for a righteous cause."

Max isolates himself because of the loss he's suffered since the apocalypse. He doesn't want to keep experiencing it. His wife and son in the first movie then hope and glory. The woman and child he keeps hallucinating throughout this movie. That happened in between furiosa and fury road. He refused to get close to them even though they wanted to be his family. Then they ended up getting killed because he wasn't there for them.

This movie is a 10/10! Like you said, they do so much world and character building with minimal dialogue. The characters are all defined by their actions, and the ways they treat each other. ‘Fang it’ is Australian slang. It means hit the accelerator hard.
Max never stays. Its the iron rule of Mad Max. In all 3 previous movies.
George Miller, who created and directed the Mad Max movies, was a doctor. He created this genre with Mad Max (the first movie - 1979 from memory). George miller’s list of other movies would surprise most people - movies like Babe and Happy Feet.
The ‘wives’ are an interesting collection: 2 actual super models, one daughter of a super star musician, one grandaughter of elvis presley (who married the guitarist when they met on set- really) and one daughter of sydney doctors who is an aspiring actress.

This is my favorite Mad Max movie by far.
I learned just recently that the two main actors hated eachother through much of the filming. You can see it in their interactions, but it actually works. Then in one scene they somehow bonded at just the moment the characters are supposed to and they became friends. Not sure if this is a case of actors getting so into their characters they take it off screen or if it was just two actor egos clashing that just happened to fit the mood of the film. I think both actors have admitted fault in the initial feud, though both also recognize Tom Hardy needed to grow up a lot...and he did.

I suspect the reason Max couldn't tell Furiosa his name early in the film was b/c he felt such a burden of guilt that part of his psychosis became denying his identity. It was only at the end after he'd helped the women fight through to freedom that he felt enough redemption to re-embrace his name.
Also, there's a trope in many old westerns of a character type referred to as the drifter. He shows up, defeats the bad guy and rides off into the plains at films end. That's the role Max has in all the films.

It was a crazy undertaking that took close to four years to make. It came out late last year that Tom and Charlize were constantly battling on set. Tom works with Method acting and Charlize is not a fan of that type of acting, so they clashed a lot over that among other stuff. You really don't see it on screen except for when they fight when they first meet, that was an actual fight between them according to some who were on set. Mad Max Fury Road was under production hell for almost 30 years . It gave a chance for production to produce 4 scripts ( Furiosa) , in which explains the mythology of the film. Every vehicle and everyone and everything had a backstory. This is Joseph Campbell's mythology at its best 👌.
Max was forced into being a shallow lone wolf rogue, not wanting any attachments to anybody, in fear of losing more loved one's in his life, hence why he leaves at the end ..ThIs was not just MEDIOCRE 😊.. 6 Oscars. Giving best action film title of the millennium 👏. The Director used center framing in each shot so you won't loose track of all the on going action 👍.. Furiosa is soon to come out . Great reaction Kelsea. Loved the commentary, and for a story comprising very little dialog, the message was profound. Nux died for a noble and selfless cause, no longer requiring his leader and 'friends' to witness his historic death, but rather having the one person, Capable, who believed he was not a worthless expendable pawn, acknowledge his brave heroism. Can we say, at the end of our time, that we were witnessed and found worthy by the ones we love?
Max's world parallels ours. Politicians, celebrities, scientists and religious leaders control our lives with false promises and outlandish objectives, and the masses follow blindly, waving colorful flags of self-virtue whilst promoting falsities through social media, and believing in devious political spin, demonic doctrine, and sly whispers. All to the beat of drums. Mankind is on the road to self-destruction.
The question must be asked. Who killed the world?
And overlaying the underlying message, Fury Road is unquestionably and undeniably, the greatest action movie ever made.

This film was one of the single most difficult productions in modern history. It took about 20 years to travel from concept to arriving on the big screen as the masterpiece it is. One of the Wives' actresses (Riley Keough I believe) described her memory of shooting the film as mixed: unlimited pride in what they ended up achieving and (somewhat jokingly) trauma from how hard it was to film.
There's a book called Blood, Sweat and Chrome about the production that I highly recommend. It's a fascinating look into the process of film production, the faults of the current studio system and how this movie managed to just barely escape all of that and remain almost completely true to Miller's original vision. The book also goes into Miller's life, how he went from an emergency room physician to directing the first Mad Max in 1979, and finally releasing this madness at 70 years old. It contains interviews from dozens of members of the cast and crew, along with various film critics as well as other filmmakers who are, nearly a decade later, still trying to comprehend how Miller managed to accomplish what he did with Fury Road.
George Miller himself has a lot of love for old silent cinema, the fact that it's a form of storytelling that can't be replicated by any other medium. He wanted to tell a story that could be communicated solely through a giant chase scene with as little dialogue as possible, so even if someone were to watch the English version in Japan, they would completely understand what was going on. I believe he and his wife (who won an Oscar for editing the movie) edited a silent version just to make sure it would work.

Steven Soderbergh, a well-known movie director, said (and I'm paraphrasing here) that directing thirty seconds of this would have driven him insane. I hope so! I don't think the writing was spectacular so I'll give her that she didn't have great material to work with. But I still was pretty underwhelmed with a lot of aspects of her acting that can't be written off by that. And I think the side characters did a fantastic job at carrying the movie! So ya, I don't necessarily want to blame her entirely, and Queen's Gambit is one of my favorite shows so I have a lot of hope for her.. but I just don't think she brought much of anything to her performance in the menu. It kinda felt like her Queen's Gambit character playing a role. Like if she became an actress that's how she would act lol.
But with that said, her performance in Queen's Gambit was good enough that I'm not giving up on her. Hoping the menu was just not a good project for her.

You can't be too mad at Max in those beginning scenes... even his name, Max, is the name of a dog. Don't think of Max as a man, think of him as a dog. They tell you that at the very beginning of the film: he's been reduced to simply the instinct to survive.
Max had a happy life, with a family, but suddenly the world fell apart around him through no fault of his own and his life was ruined in an instant. Then, he found friends, and he lost them. Then he found more friends, and he lost them. Then he found a new family, and he lost them.
He's been wandering the wasteland with only the instinct to survive. Any other character in that universe probably would have looked at thise girls like meat, or worse, but he saw them only as standing in the way of his survival.
Notice it isn't Furiosa telling him not to rely on the gratitude of a very bad man that makes him change his mind. It's the offer to help get his muzzle off.
Max is like a dog that has been beaten by everyone it's ever met. Even the kindest and most caring human could take them in and the dog would still be terrified of them. Even once it becomes accustomed to you, it still may bite you if you raise your hand above its head, because so many times before that movement has meant it was going to get hit.
You can't be mad at Max at the end of the film, either. He leaves because, in the end, he's a street dog, and he knows if he stays it's only a matter of time before he has to watch the vultures pick Furiosa's corpse.
Max is a dog. But there's another symbolism in this film.
The three bosses symbolize three of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. Immortan Joe is Conquest, the People Eater is Pestilence and Famine, the Bullet Farmer is War...
...Max is Death, and wherever he goes, Death and Hell follow him. So, he knows he can never call anywhere home, and he can never truly call anyone friend, because that would be a curse to them.

I don’t really agree with this (that the originals are back story); the flashbacks in this sort of hint something *similar* happened to this Max, but there isn’t really true continuity in this series. They contradict each other (Max’s interceptor is destroyed more than once for example) and Bruce Spence plays two different but similar characters in parts 2 and 3. The timelines also don’t match - the first one is pre/mid-apocalyptic, whereas Fury Road seems to be multiple generations on.
I think they’re much better understood as variations on a theme (perhaps legends told years in the future) rather than trying to treat them as a strict continuity.

I think part of what makes this movie great is that it isn't biased one way or the other. There are so many strong females in this, but they also couldn't have accomplished what they accomplished without Max. And many of the female characters were allowed to be strong without removing their feminity entirely. I think this movie was fantastic because it doesn't fall into the "woke" category or the "anti-woke" category. It's just full of really interesting characters who are multifaceted and in the end, their greatest strength is found in needing each other and being willing to risk their lives for each other.
