- The Selects Gallery is pleased to introduce a new exhibition "Gia Marie Carangi: Known as Gia", an exhibition celebrating the life of iconic 80's supermodel Gia in honor of Pride Month. The exhibition features a newly released curation of photographs never seen before and contact sheets by Robert Farber.
The name Gia evokes many legacies: the first supermodel, a meteoric rise to fame, a dangerous flirtation with drugs, a fall from grace. However, there is more to Gia than the most graphic headlines would suggest, a vibrant girl facing a tumultuous life with boldness and love. It is in this spirit that The Selects presents “Gia Marie Carangi: Known as Gia,” to commemorate Gia’s complexity as well as her widely unrecognized status as the first openly gay model in honor of Pride Month.
This curation features iconic images from Robert Farber’s Bloomingdale’s campaigns in addition to newly released contact sheets. Farber was a staple of high fashion commercial clients such as Bloomingdale’s who admired his painterly photographs and ability to make advertisements look like fine art. Farber approached working with Gia with a different angle than most of his contemporaries, looking to defy her status as a sex symbol by portraying the soft, fun-loving sides of her that were rarely highlighted or shown. Farber’s sensitive, insightful images are the perfect lens into the complexity that lay just beneath the surface of Gia’s public persona and legacy.

Gia how could you not find love you were so beautiful. And despite her using heroin she was caring, and generous and a loyal friend. RIP Gia.

If only she was loved and adored in life . If only society would treat every heroin addict with love and respect...not just the famous and beautiful ones...who are dead. If Kurt Cobain was a nobody people would pass him on the street and yell junkie . I know this because I lived it. Today I am 18 yrs into my recovery from heroin addiction. Remember Gia the next time you see a young girl on the streets.

Gia was noticed at the age of 16 in 1976 by a photographer whos name was Harry King ?? Who worked for a fashion magazine called vogue? OR Ella??i think ? But he found a look in her and took a few photos of her and bought them to the people he worked for who seen what he seen.she was as said had the height had beautiful skin like silk.and was beautiful looking.from 1976 until 1980 she had become a super model and with her fame she became like other modles who I won't mention but are alive addicted to drugs been so only 20 years old she started becoming you could say depended on her habit.by the age of 23 she was arriving late for photo shoots and would often walk of the set and disappearing where the people gave her one more warning and said if it happened again because it was becoming an everyday habit that they would have to sack her.
