Because it got the pep treatment - off key, different tempo. There was nothing wrong with the original version aside from the Engrish. If she fixed just that (which she did in this version) but kept the original tempo and key, it'd be perfect.

Well that is because Eyes on Me is about regret. It is sort of a somber pain then a throbbing pain. Faye gives the impression she is singing it after the fact. While Angela Aki gives the impression that she is singing it with the guy in the bar. That is the difference in their performances.
This cover needed to exist. I think this is the best live version I've heard, Crystal Kay's sounds the best in recording on the orchestral bluray, but hers and Faye Wong's suffered terribly from the strains of live performace. (Faye's is just so delicate and lovely on the game's OST though.)

I guess you could argue that from a technical standpoint Angela Aki does it better, but I think the way Faye sings is what makes Faye's singing her own, because she's known for that soft and delicate way of singing. Its her style. Its like how Angela Aki's known for her powerful and passionate singing style. But yeah, I'm gonna stop and just say that they're both amazing.
i like this version, however i do prefer the more delicate and fragile tone version done by Faye Wong, for me her live was so awesome! However again i do enjoy this one makes it easier to sing compared to the original haha.

That and the fact that she's at a concert where people wanted to listen to her own songs made the faster version less awkward IMO. I love the original song by faye. I know that people put FF8 and this together as it should be, and have very good memories playing the game. but don't hate Angela for covering this song, she did and excellent job at it.

That's what I thought too when I heard this version. Angela is good, but like you said, this song is more fitting for someone who is more gentle in both tone and voice.
Honestly this is the best. As much as i love Faye Wong, this has none of the weird translation, more emotion - it makes far more sense as a song played in a bar by a pianist like Julia.
