Brilliant video -you are absolutely right about the NZXT 73, I ordered a kit with stands offs and a back plate for LGA 1700 however it works well without them as there is enough down pressure and the back plate has that slot for adjustment. This is awesome news. I have a pending order for an LGA 1700 retrofit kit from NZXT, but due to delays in their supply chain they have no idea when they'll be able to fulfill those orders. Glad to know I can reasonably use the existing mounting solution if I'm careful about the mounting pressure as a stopgap.
Not using a thermal pad, just the factory-installed paste on the pump, so we'll see if it can get close enough to mount correctly.

Height of the LGA1366/115x standoffs that come with the cooler are around 21mm and shorter than Corsair LGA1700 retrofit kit. I think that kit is for Coolit versions. So with some standoffs if you're very skilled with a Dremel you can remove 1 mm of height to the hex nut girth without cutting off the top thread. Otherwise a blank thread and a couple nuts to the correct height basically 1 mm less than the LGA 1200 standoffs .. until you can get your replacement standoffs.

Noctua coolers that come with secufirm2 mounting system support LGA 1700 out of the box. I needed to see more affordable AIO’s shipping with 12th gen support for water but you can request upgrade kits from a lot of air/water companies if you already have cooling without the mounting.

Great vid and confirms my thoughts about the Hyper 212. But what about the coverage of the IHS where heat sinks are not designed larger to accommodate the larger 12th gen. All existing heatsinks will miss part of the larger surface area. Can you do a vid showing surface area contact of a 12th gen please ?

Great video. I have a question though. I have a Fractal 360 Dynamic AIO Cooler. It came with the LGA 1700 kit for my ASUS Z90 Hero MB but when you install the backplate the threaded pins that poke through are not flush with the MB and instead are very slightly proud of it., so when you screw the standoffs into them they bottom on these threaded standoff before tightening down on the board so there is some play with the backplate and the back of the MB. I am sure once the cooler is screwed onto these standoffs, that it will draw the backplate into the back of the MB and take up this slack but I am not sure if this is correct or not or if Fractal desined it this way.

New to AIOs. I have new ASUS Ryujin II AIO and Asus Strix z690 DDR Mobo and a 12700K. I am a bit hesitant in installing. The included 1700 backer plate and provided stand offs seem very loose. At this point I have hard hand tightened the standoffs but not yet mounted the fan/sink. Should they tighten up if use a nut driver on them or is meant to tighten up with the screwing down of the AIO heat sink and mount? Worried about proper install pressure. Thx!

As I'm building a complete 12th Gen box, I pre-ordered the EK-Quantum Velocity² water block designed specifically for LGA1700 and it's coming in the next few days. It works a bit differently to the standard method of torquing down from the CPU side of the motherboard, rather it is torqued from the back of the motherboard into the water block.
Regarding the Asetek backplates, if you think you're not going to get enough pressure, use nylon washers (commonly available at Jaycar) between the motherboard and the backplate (on each of the four backplate standoffs). I've used this method on a few Z270 & Z370 boards in the past where mounting pressure wasn't adequate (thin motherboard PCB?).

Kudos to ASUS MOBOs making 2 sets of holes. My understanding at least with Corsair is the difference is less than 1 mm of stand off height. While I've ordered the replacement standoffs, I've heard the LGA 1200 will work. But if needed I'll use a Dremel to remove some of the standoffs hex nut with a cutting wheel. Worst case, until they replacements arrive, I'll make my own standoffs with threading and two nuts. But what a pain in the butt for 1 mm and negligible size differences.

So basic coolers where the holes can't go past 75mm, can those have extension adapters fitted to reach 78mm? edit: The cooler is an Intel BXTS15A. After looking at the datasheet and doing calculations it looks like a standoff coming from the LGA 1700 78mmx78mm bracket with diameter up to 2.25mm can fit through the retention holes on the cooler before causing an angle. That is very small and unlikely any adapter standoffs will be released with that small of a diameter. I don't know if adding length extension adapters would work.

It doesn't look like i can easily carry my Scythe Grand Kama Cross 2 forward. There is no official upgrade kit, i suppose this cooler is too old, and when there are, their availability is outright terrifying. Is there some sort of universal backplate that i can drill and tap to accept the correct screw?
So what i have is the upper mechanism which should be easy enough to modify for that range of sizes, kind of long holes that have a little bit of screw outline protrusions which i can just file down. Then i have a backplate with individual 775/1366/1150-1156 holes, trying to make new holes will be quite hazardous, the thread will not hold well. Then there's a mounting kit with screw standoffs of some sort of imperial size that go into that or into the original AM2 backplate, and then a kit of shorter M4 standoffs that go into a wide-type 2011 socket just as it comes from the factory.
Very much on a budget and choosing between a 5600G build or maybe some sort of Intel processor, 11-series, 12-series i don't know 6c/12t variety or better. Will probably need to run it for the next 5+ years with at most minor upgrades, main performance constraint is software development, need to minimise compile times on large C++ and maybe Rust codebases. C++ build process just spawns as many independent processes as there are hardware threads, scales well, Rust is more single thread performance constrained. Linux predominantly. Probably want to overclock or undervolt and boost. Preferably want a mainboard with decent onboard audio, maybe ALC1200 at a minimum. The processor will be paired with a GTX970 for the time being until something better falls into my lap, and 16GB low-cost GSkill DDR4-3200 RAM that i have at hand, with the possibility that i'll need to upgrade to 24 or 32GB.
