Could the fact that the cartoons see him as a feral beast and the comics show him talking is because he can speak the Cybertronian Language and not the human languages?
I like the IDW take on him, the blending of his intelligence with his animalistic instincts as well his reasons for how he feels about Megatron's changing demeanour are why I like this version.

IDW's interpretation of the character is arguably my favorite of them all.
C'mon, Soundwave FELT his death across space, you gotta admit that's a powerful moment.
I haven't read the comics and yet when Chris said that I felt like I had been punched in the gut.
Not gonna lie, almost sounds like something out of Kingdom Hearts. Soundwave sensing Ravage's death from across the universe like that. I don't hate it.

When he said “Don’t change back” to Megatron, I like how IDW kept it ambiguous whether he meant changing back as a Decepticon or Autobot. It was beautiful and poignant
I like when he talks. Those incarnations seem to be the most fleshed out.
IDW Ravage > every other incarnation.
I’ve always seen him as a primitive creature, so I found it very odd when he could talk in the IDW comics. Still find it really weird.
@@ShinGallon I don't know - the original comics Ravage - especially in the UK stories - was pretty good. His loyalty to Megatron stood out, but the fact that he was smart and self aware really made him into a fleshed-out character. The IDW version seems to basically be a continuation of that persona.

Since RotF, I've always known Ravage as an animalistic hunter and savage 'attack-cat', however I absolutely love his depiction in IDW above all others, and want to see more versions of the character as intelligent and verbal.
Learning that his Shattered Glass incarnation looks so cute and speaks like a LOLcat is the best thing I've seen all week
The creaor gave him a Twitter account, Facebook page, etc., for a year or so. There are even sg ravage comics. Google it and have a laugh
IDW Ravage's faith may have been the first time I cried reading a comic, previous deaths hit hard, but were mostly enfurating, his was so sad, specially due to Sounwave's reaction, which showed us how a talented artist can make a faceless robot emote better than some real life people.
Ravage was refrigerated. It was NOT okay.
His loyalty to Megatron is more blinding than sunlight.

Ravage is one of my favorite Decepticons. He's arguably one of the most memorable characters in the series. Not only does he have a menacing side to him due to his ferocity in battle, but he also has a few cute and comedic moments as well. And I'm SO GLAD he survived the animated movie and season 3. Ravage is a survivor along side Jazz, Cliffjumper, Bumble Bee, Spike, Soundwave, and his other cassettes.
This episode made me really, really want a Basics on IDW Megatron.
Ravage is a cool villain, and his Beast Wars and IDW incarnations both made big impacts in spite of their limited screentime.
I loved the MTMTE Ravage. They wrote him so well. It was bad enough they killed Skids, but I chocked when Ravage died.

@@syweb2 IDWs More Than Meets The Eye series is where Rodimus is captain of the Lost Light searching for the Knights of Cybertron. After Dark Cybertron story arc Megatron now an Autobot joined as co-Captain. Good comic a absolute read. To many good characters in IDWs run, RIP.
At this point this is just the general consensus for everyone on the character.
The basics on everyone's favorite Bumblebee recolor, the parinoid sharpshooter cliffjumper or rumble and frenzy.
Eager to see a basics on Cliffjumper and a debunking on how he does not die as often as we joke about.

I know his name was actually a stealth jab at the executives who were moving around employees, specifically being "Gee, ax us?"
His idw death just tore me up, between Soundwave sensing it despite the distance and his message to megatron as he passed away. I loved that incarnation.

I think I like IDW's blended take on the character best. Though something about his death feels a little... off.
My complaint about IDW Ravage is I wish he got upgraded into his BW self's humanoid body. Be interesting to see somebody who faced prejudice from humanoid TFs now suddenly be one himself.
I'm 36 years old and I have always loved Soundwave and all his Mini-Cassettes! I'm also the proud owner of The whole G1 cartoon from the US as well as it's movie! I consider your channel a version of the "Cybernet Space Cube"😉 from the G2 cartoon!
IDW Ravage was the best Ravage, and Megatron didn’t make Tarn suffer nearly enough.
I like to imagine that Megatron unmade Tarn completely, so that there wasn't anything left to return to the All-Spark.
Still, it was pretty satisfying to see Tarn get his head crushed to pulp

I loved that growl he did for his name.
Ravage showing up in the Beast Wars was awesome, I think they got rid of him too soon. So I'm glad he showed back up in the comics. A black recolor of T2 Cheetor was his best look. I made sure to collect BW toys that either shared names with Soundwave & his crew or reminded me of them. So in my head most of them survived into the future & was still causing trouble.
His last line was epic, "Decepticons, FOREVER!!!
IDW Ravage's death will always be the saddest thing ever to happen in Transformers lore. I knew I'd see it in this video, but it still got me. :'(

Great overview. He's always been one of my favourites since his debut in '84, and his characterization in the Lost Light storyline was the best, IMHO. His noble death in that comic still brings a tear to my eye.

I should be working on a test right now, but hell I wanted to see this episode! Amazing as always. Ravage is probably one of my favorite deceptions ever. He's just amazing. A giant, mechanical black cat that stalks and kills. IDW even opened my mind into how cool he was when he talked. He's great!

Ah yes the OTHER famous cassette of Soundwave. Personally among the two I like Laserbeak more, but Ravage is cool in his own right and visually is the superior one. This is why Ravage had more movie appearances.

I think IDW publishing and Shattered Glass are my favorite. IDW is interesting and makes him super likeable. While Shattered Glass is adorable and really pulls off the white and blue.
Ravage will always have a special place in my heart ever since I found a toy of him in a parking lot as a kid and had no idea what he was.

If you’re talking about the G1 series, Ravage talked once in cassette mode, and Steeljaw never talked at all.
Only Ramhorn ever spoke, and at that I think it was an oversight. Or, one could chalk it up to the time anomaly that occurred in that same, single episode he ever talked in.

Again I never read the comics, but Ravage's part in the IDW story sounds fascinating, especially with how he essentially became Soundwave's therapist.
But for the stuff I actually saw, I'd say "Beast Wars" had my favorite take on the character. "Decepticons FOREVER!"
In all honesty the friendship that soundwave and ravange have in the IDW is truly beautiful and sad. That Soundwave felt what was his only true friend, who had stuck with him through thick and thin, die from galaxies away spoke volumes of their friendship. Soundwave is my favorite transformer and his friend ship with Ravange is part of that, he treat Ravange with respect as a friend and a loyal pet in almost every incarnation but the IDW shows that fully.
Seeing Ravage in the Bumblebee movie made me realize how much I miss seeing that murder kitty on screen. Put Ravage back in the cartoons Hasbro!

Ravage, the cat that acts like a dog. Such a good kitty, and good boy. I really enjoyed him in the cartoon, and as I've heard he's great in IDW, so I can't wait to read about it. But I kind of liked him in Beast Wars.
I must admit, I've got a really big soft spot for his Energon counterpart, as his figure was the first transformer I ever owned. I really like that figure.

I remember him making the G1 transform noise in Beast Wars during the Golden Disc storyline.
Dude turned into a cassette so Megatron had some sick tunes.
Plus the Russian accent was perfect for a leftover soldier deciding sides and the dude could do gun tricks.
I prefer the combo when ravage followed megs onto the list light investigating why megs is no longer a con.
A Purrfect blend of animal and intelligence.
I asked James Roberts (writer of IDW's Lost Light) via Twitter (@jroberts332) about Ravage's meaning at the end when he told Megatron not to change back -- if he was telling him to not return to being a Decepticon, or telling him not to return to being an Autobot. Mr. Roberts kindly responded, letting me know that interpretation was up to the reader, leaving Ravage's meaning up in the air ;)

As a child of the 90's, I love Covert Predecon Secret Police Agent Ravage. However as a child I was only familiar with the G1 cartoon depiction of him so when he appeared inside the Axalon and shot the guns out of everyone's hands and started speaking with a Russian accent.... 9 year old me was quite confused...

I feel like Ravage speaking is a fantastic idea. I mean, if IDW is anything to go by, then the character arcs a talking Ravage can go through are limitless. I wanna see a Ravage who switches sides!
Ravage is one of the iconic "core" characters that most people with even passing knowledge of Transformers stuff know. Honestly, I was surprised he didn't get a roll of any sort in Prime, as the lack of him there always felt like a void in the show.
I've grown up with the growling but I'd like to see a talking ravage in more live action, cartoon, and common media

I'm featuring Soundwave and his cassettes as main characters in my fanfiction, and on that note, I think I'll go with the blended personality of IDW for Ravage, an intelligent speech-capable cassette who serves Soundwave, but sometimes growling or roaring when angry.

NGL Ravage's last moments with Megatron in the IDW comics was just as emotional as Rung's last moments imo.

The same logic can be applied to Soundwave so to speak. He never i repeat never used his shoulder mounted minigun since his creation in G1. In fact only recently in the Cybverse cartoon did they finally have him use it. Something tells me the artists for a lot of TF characters weren't concerned on making sure whether characters actually use certain weapons. They just wanted them to look cool and tough.

I like how he still has the classic g1 transforming Sound effect in beats wars, the first and only time that Sound was heard in a cartoon since the g1 cartoons and wouldnt be heard again until transformers animated almost 10 years after beast wars killed him

Soundwave's cassette tapes were the first Transformers that I ever owned. I had bought them in order to use them alongside my GI Joe action figures because I felt that in their robot/beast modes that they were roughly 3.75" scale, and my Cobra army needed some reinforcements. The funny thing was that I liked them well enough to get more Transformers even after I stopped using them with my GI Joe figures. Ravage was an favorite of both myself and my little brother, and I probably own almost every retail version of him.

A talking Ravage is a good Ravage. Really loving these videos, great work summarizing these various sources.
I personally like the Beast Wars version best because it emphasizes he's come a long way since his first appearance.
Honestly, for as badly it was handled, I like the concept of Scorponok and the Terrorcons and really would like to see them revisited as maybe some group that goes around attacking people for their energy and maybe even have them attack Cybertron during the war. You can even do some horror aspects of the alternate color ones being the “commander” or “command unit” and the normal unit being mass drones the Command units can make, giving them a bit of a horror aesthetic as well. I think there are plenty of Things that can be done with the concept
