    Hi Pete,
    I am also a DJ but I need a specific desk/shelf for home DJing. Due to me being fairly tall and needing to stand for DJing it is hard to find a good height online. So really I need a custom desk. The only problem is I’m a student so I’m also on a stupidly low amount per month so I can’t afford and expensive bespoke online company. How many do you charge for projects and do you know anyone that will charge for under £200?

      Hi. I'm not in the business any more I'm afraid, so won't be able to help out, and I can't discuss costs on this because it was a commissioned piece.

    Great job Peter, I love the construction method/design on this. So well thought out. Have you/could you...do a video on your measuring and cutting techniques for breaking down sheets etc. I find it so interesting to see how others go about it. Have a great weekend!

    • @10MinuteWorkshop
      @10MinuteWorkshop  7 лет назад +1

      +Steve_SBT Thanks Steve! Lots of planning went into this, and I still buggered up the measurements! Let me know if you need a few small-ish squares of 12mm MR - I have plenty...😂. To be honest, for this kind of thing I just give a cut-list to my timber yard and let them sort it out - they have really good guys on the panel saw & CNC, and if a rare mistake slips through it’s usually down to me. I have all kinds of ideas for vids that explain the process - from job estimating & costing, planning & cutting, construction etc... but the trouble is that they’re just not very interesting visually. Also starting to get a bit niche - like my ‘how I make my videos’ series, I suspect they’d be very interesting to small group, but a bit of a shrug to everyone else! But yes, it’s something I’m thinking about all the time, and definitely considering 👍

      I wonder how strong it would be to take your 12mm MR cutoff’s and use 2 domino’s per joint to make up a longer board??? I’m always curious just how strong something like finger jointed pine is....

    Sorry if you've answered this in a video before, but how do you get full sheets of mdf or plywood from the home center to your shop?

    • @10MinuteWorkshop
      @10MinuteWorkshop  7 лет назад +3

      +David Matke No worries. 1/ I have a van, and 2/ my timber yard is also very local and will deliver, and 3/ they do precision board cutting, so it’s all nice and easy 👍

      +James Alway used Polyten PVA but getting harder to find or pricey now. Just trying out Everbuild D4, seems pretty good. 10 minutes handling time, like Polyten. 👍

    Hi Peter. Love the videos, i have got some great inspiration for a few projects of my own.
    On a few of your videos you show your plans. How do you do these is it just pen paper or a piece of software?
    Kind Regards
    Craig (DIY Dad WTB)

    • @10MinuteWorkshop
      @10MinuteWorkshop  7 лет назад

      Thanks Craig, glad to hear it. Re. plans, it depends on the project; the 3D ones, like in this video, for example, come from the designers (I think they use Sketchup, not sure tbh) whereas my simple 2D ones are done in an old copy of OmniGraffle - I don't love it and should upgrade it, but it works and I have a lot of muscle-memory stored up for it! TBH I'd be happy using pretty much anything that can draw boxes and work to a scale, but I've found them either overly-simplistic, or with levels of wannabe-CAD complexity! Cheers, Peter

      +DIY Dad WTB Craig, I do apologise, I’ve only just seem this comment, and thanks! The plans are supplied by the designers, and I believe they use sketchup. For my own designs I have an old copy of Omnigraffle, though I tend to sketch things out first in pencil 👍

    Is that going to be a permanent installation at a bar/club? I can't imagine someone moving that each time they get a gig.

      +Tim Mortensen I believe it’s for in someone’s home - with everything covered up it looks like any other piece of furniture, but whip off the Perspex cover and it disco time 😄

    Are you thinking of a separate video showing how you lift the finished piece out of the workshop (joke)? Great video really well put together and like the way you fully utilise the different thicknesses of MDF.

      +Mike S Thanks! I did think about doing video, but the moment passed. Funny actually, the van driver must have been in his 70s - oldest guy I’ve seen working! Luckily I had a pal handy to help out. 😂

    Hi Peter. I'm watching your videos for a while and must say I love your preciseness and accuracy achieved in fairly simple way. Really admire your work, especially in terms of the space you have in your workshop. I also wanted to ask where do you getting your MDF from. I tried to work with a MDF from B&Q but it is pretty crap quality. I have nothing than problems with that. The core is so soft that the board split when screw is drive in even with pilot hole.

    • @10MinuteWorkshop
      @10MinuteWorkshop  7 лет назад +4

      +Daniel Prasal Thanks! I only use MR (Moisture Resistant) MDF, as it’s a much better board for not much more money. I buy mine locally from a small timber yard (www.ajferguson.co.uk) but you can get it from places like Wickes, I think; usually has a green tint, or a green core if a it’s thicker board. Also try Spax M-cut screws in MDF - very good and no splitting👍

      Many thanks for your advise Peter. On projects I worked, the MRMDF was used only purposely in damp places (kitchen, bathrooms). Most of contractors tries to save every penny. But for a small projects as you do and myself just for hobby, that sounds as a perfect material. Also I think that B&Q MDF is not Medite or other leading sheet manufacturer. Must be some low cost production. Other question I have is, how do you handle with 8x4 sheets in your workshop? I have similar size garage (except other room you have) and that always been tricky to rip the sheets acceptably accurate with circular saw. Do you have them pre-cut by supplier? On your videos you always show already cut panels with some trimming needed only.

    • @10MinuteWorkshop
      @10MinuteWorkshop  7 лет назад +1

      +Daniel Prasal Yes, Medite all the way if poss! I do have most of my materials cut by the timber yard, but I can just about fit an 8x4 in here and rip it down with a tracksaw - did one this morning actually, but I have to clear the benches just to fit it in, so best avoided if I can. A tracksaw makes a huge difference to fast cutting of sheet goods, well worth the investment if you expect to cut a lot. 👍

      My wife would kill me if I buy another saw :) I will need to make a jig instead.

      Daniel Prasal Must be a common trait of ‘wives’ - I have to buy my tools in stealth mode and it has been known that she has not noticed the ‘new acquisition’ for six months.😉

      +Act-Like-A-Pro Yeah, by using the 25mm in ‘ribs’ like that I use ~40% less material, so ~20% less weight overall;saved about 35 Kg - and it was still plenty heavy!

      Yeah I bet, I work for a Joinery company in Cambridgeshire and we had to make some doors that were pressed up using an 18, 22, and another 18mm sheet together, and they were in the 8 x 4 sheets!
