We Almost Lost a Foot! while Building our Barn | Sailing Soulianis - Ep. 129

  • After nearly a year of planning, we’ve arrived at DAY ONE of our barn build: excavation! Seeing the earth being moved - the first real visual progress - is pretty thrilling.
Prior to breaking ground, our discussions of the barn’s size and location have been seemingly endless. Once we made our final decisions, we laid out the tapes and measured and remeasured and remeasured… and something wasn’t adding up.
    Hope you enjoy!

In construction we extend our pad out beyond at least 5 ft. The tape measure fiasco happens. Welcome to construction. You can always measure the diagonal for square! Using the same tape helps. Switching between tapes can mess a project up. My coworkers boss bought architectural scales for everyone jn the office. He saved money and they all came from China. 1990's they found out the scales were not accurate compared to the German scales. They were off 1/16" at 1" and those numbers compiled. Their office was still hand drafting. The boss gathered them all and trashed them. Measure, measure, measure and cut once. Great job on trusting your gut.
Good job with the lean too roof.

The barn looks like a pretty good plan. Glad you are going with a wide roller door. That was my only mistake on my 40x60 barn was installing two 10 foot wide doors. Yes, pontoon boats and RV will fit, but the clearance is very tight when you are parking stuff in the barn by yourself or you have a helper that doesn't know left from right or north from south. lol

Funny you say boats are so much more weather tight but yet you are in a far different environment. Can you imagine the cost of a resident if you did what needs to be done for a boat. Good job on your barn.

You can actually strap the boat to the trailer to keep it from tilting when you open the amas. Or tie it to a stake in the ground or even a tree. That's what I do, but I am in my driveway, and have a tree close by. Have your boat stands ready and open slowly, and you should have no problems. I have actually opened my amas on my own. My boat is much smaller being a Super Tramp, (20') but same concept. If you have someone on the boat to help push the arms down, it will be a lot easier. My guess is your amas will be pretty heavy to lift into the fully open position by the person on the ground.

It's a wise move keeping the boat in a barn. I keep my boat in a shed, I can work on it whenever, not that it needs much. So, it doesn't sit outside in a yard, deteriorating. I don't have to put it on a mooring just because the yard wants to clear the space. Over 20 odd years I've only put it in the water when I'm around and can use it, it hasn't deteriorated, so there's less maintenance to do, less cleaning after a winter, just rinse off the dust. The big thing is I don't worry about it, that peace of mind, nothing gets stolen, mysteriously damaged. I when I want to to work on it it's next to the house. Planning zoning should allow for more recreational space like this.

You're right, 4/1 is minimum pitch for shingles unless installed over continuous membrane. But hey, this is a lean to, not habitable space. You're making it work. Funny bit about grandpa's tape.

I think you'll find if you read the fine print on the shingle package that the roof pitch you are applying the shingle to is too slight. Hence the failure of the previous shingle to keep water out.

Go with an 18 ft wide door at minimum. So much easier to back in trailers. And it leaves room to drive a car in beside the boat.
