Calibrate and Tune Mutable Instruments Rings (and Plaits)

- Hola amigos. Today I want to share with you a real quick, but hopefully useful video. I found my Mutable Instruments Rings to be acting funny and when I hooked it up to a tuner, I found it to be all out of whack. So I looked up how to calibrate it, but I needed to know which keys on my Keystep pro were specifically c2 and c4. So stay tuned and I'll show you how to find out and then we'll walk through the calibration procedure for Rings and Plaits.

I love the way my rings sounds but I always had trouble tuning it to other modules. I just calibrated it via your vid. Game changer..
Thx for the info
Oh Lord my Rings has been slightly out of tune since I purchased it 6 years ago lolllll! I finally managed to get it to work perfectly today!
Woot woot!!!
Your explanation for Plaits is wrong, this way you would only change the octave. It is described in the manual under "Adjusting the FREQUENCY knob range".
Yes I was wondering about this tbh
Thank you for correcting me! I'll make this top comment.
I noticed my rings was out of tune yesterday. I'm glad I came across your video. I also have a keystep too; super helpful!
YAY, glad I could help
Thanks man, for showing where the c2 and c4 are. Now I can calibrate my microcell.
What if I have a key step 37 where is c1??
you'd have to shift down a few octaves with the octave button. C1 should be three octaves down from middle c, which is C4
I managed to tune my Plaits to a different key and it’s pretty cool but this is amazing if I want it back to normal
you showing me where the c-values are saved so much time. thank you so much!
YW, and you know what, I just referenced it myself yesterday, haha. I needed to get my MI Plaits back in tune as well as my clouds module. It works for clouds too! Look that one up, however as the notes are the same but the connections are obv slightly different.
User 173 ha amazing. Yea I needed it for Braids and couldn’t for the life of me find where the Cs were on Keystep ha
Man you're a life saver this video is so helpful!
Glad to help! Also, just about all of Mutable's oscillators, etc use a similar procedure. So, Plaits, clouds, rings, etc.
Thank you!
Hi! im calibrating my rings using ''voltage'' option from ornament and crime - I can literally set +1 and +3V as output there, precisely. I'm getting 2 leds flashing on rings after that (which indicates an error), do you know what might be the problem? I've calibrated every other mutable module i have this way and it always works. I can't think of a better way, actually!
I was doing the same with Mordax - Data. Afterwards my LEDs also flashed (guess 2 times or so) ... I also thought there was a mistake but after checking the output (Freq-knob and Structur-knob turned fully ccw, + being in mono-mode) the pitches AND octaves were precisely locked in :)
the manual says "If the calibration is successful, the module returns to its normal state. Otherwise, the two LEDs will blink in RED for A COUPLE OF SECONDs." Did it flash for several seconds or only 2 times (as in my case)?
@@vellocet_audio Hi! I appreciate your reply! My module has bricked since then, sadly. It is strange as it worked perfectly just after I built it, but then it had more and more issues. I got myself a nano-rings for a good price which works great now :)
great video watched your video carefully got it tuned thank you!
Thank you!!
Would this be applicable to calibrating a Tides v1 as well!
I don't know, but the mutable instruments team is reallllly good about getting back, so maybe email them if the manual doesn't say. I personally dont' have that module so I don't know.
thx man u did my day
Just came across your video, gave it a thumbs up after it helped me out and then I looked for what else you've done and it appears you've left the world of Eurorack and RUclips?
No, I've just taken a break. 2020 has been gnarly for everyone, and it has really drop kicked me in my chest. I lost my job earlier this year, so my focus has been on getting work again. Then I got covid-19 (mild), got in a major car accident, etc. Blah blah blah. In the end I decided to take a break for a bit. I'll be back soon! I just got a job a week ago today. so I'm focusing on keeping it, and when things settle I'll be back at my regular hobby :D
@@User173 It sounds like you got kicked to the gutter but were not defeated so your resilience demands you continue pursuing things which it sounds like you are. I don't know you in the slightest but I am happy to know you are pushing to get through the obstacles. Subscribing to your channel so later this year or sometime next year when you jump back into sharing synth knowledge, I'll hopefully be a recipient of your efforts.
@@Quantumspace23 Very kind of you sir. I'll be back by mid october. I have some stuff planned for sure. Thinking of doing an album and recording each video. Plus I have some modular gear to film me fixing and soldering, as well as doing the echomatic tape delay.
I got the red light failure,,what now??
thanks mate :)
This is great thanks
Super helpful thanks mate!
Any time!
