- We’re back with a super special episode of This Old Bench! This time, we have EQD superfan Max Reff, who owns the craziest collection of EQD pedals in the world, and some of the rarest we’ve ever released!!
Max Reff came all the way from Philly and brought his entire collection - over 75 EQD pedals! - to our humble basement. He’s joined by our host Justin Seeker and EQD founder, President, and Lead Designer Jamie Stillman to talk about some of the rarest pedals and how he acquired them.
We were flabbergasted to get a glimpse into the work Max has put in to track down these rare pedals.
Max highlights 5 of his favorites, which include the Helicopter Party, a rare green Hoof, an old White Light with some interesting characteristics, a Fuzz Master General, and a mysterious blank raw enclosure which is a Range Master clone (that Jamie has no recollection of building…but definitely built).

I love how max talks about these pedals like they're 59 les pauls, tracking the different owners and lineage, feeling the enthusiasm as he talks about them, love it.

They’re the first 4 knob hoofs. Got that cool little “II” in the corner. probably less than 50 but there are some more out there

My understanding is that the Cloven Hoof is not simply a Hoof with the germanium transistor swapped for silicon. If that's the case I'd be interested in an 'all silicon' Hoof like the one here, but with the shift control added.
man i had one of the older hoof in copper but same housing and shift knob as a trimpot. Also a golden dirt transmitter in a way bigger housing...

I do miss that pedal, and it was just hard times that necessitated the sale . I miss it, and PoH. Fwiw, I sold it for a whole lot less. I might not have it, but I still have the PoH tattoo.

So with that Rangemaster clone- I saw the Black Keys in October of 2008, a few months before the date inside that Rangemaster clone. I remember there was an opener and I was trying to remember who the band was and after some Google-fu, it was a band called the Royal Bangs. Maybe that was who the pedal was built for.

Behind all the giggling you know everyone at earthquaker had to sign new NDAs after Jaime saw some of these prototypes out in the wild.
It’s complicated, a lot of them I’m sure are from before Ndas were even considered, and a lot of the prototype ones i have were certainly not in the wild when i found them
There’s nothing unusual about signing an NDA when you work for a company that designs products.

The Interstellar Orbiter can't be very common, I've never seen it anywhere since I found mine.

@@EarthQuakerDevices does the hoof differ a lot to the park fuzz? I have played the hoof, however nobody around me has a park to compare. Im looking for a fuzz that is somewhere between a rams head and a geranium. I want velcro sometimes and distortion at others. Any ideas on which of your pedals comes close?

I just received my Aurelius - I love the preset/switching format - how about a pedal with Univibe/Phaser and ???? with this same format?
It would be a hilarious if he never actually had played them, he just loved the way they look. Years and big money spent. Then, when played on this video he’s like…ooh, these don’t sound so great 😂😂😂
