EarthQuaker Devices Retrospective Ep. 3 - Bit Commander Analog Octave Synth
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 29 сен 2024
- Our first anti- “traditional guitar” pedal circuit has been a consistent board contender year after year and highly coveted by those in the know. Bit Commander’s simple interface, excellent tracking, and huge attitude make it all too easy to dial in a crushingly primitive square wave synth sound with your stringed instrument. But what is the REAL STORY behind our original monophonic analog octave synth? How does one obtain this information? Lucky for you we have been busy compiling a serious inside look on the EarthQuaker Devices Bit Commander.
In this film, you get a chance to accompany Dave Hill as he builds his own Bit Commander pedal right here in pre-quarantined Akron Ohio! Hear the circuit’s tale by creator Jamie Stillman with a distortion twist at the end! And let’s not forget the “Basement People” reenactment by EQD crew! What stands before you is our entire goody bag of top secret info, exclusive interviews, and clips of people bonding with Bit Commander. Producers, musicians, comedians… everyone loves it. It’s famous. Needless to say, you will be better served actually watching this video than reading about it. Hop to it and enjoy!

Thank you for watching our Bit Commander Retrospective!! Subscribe to see what's next!
Its awesome cause we just got one in the store. I instantly fell in love with it. Yup gotta have one now.
cool, online just the day I finally decided it would be my next pedal.. after months trying to decide which would be first: Bit Commander or Data Corrupter? Also,pleeease upload more content, besides these retrospective I especially like EQD Sessions, Board to Death & Show us Your Junk but I want more of everything!
My favorite part of the film was the re-enactment with the fake beards lol .... my Instagram name is @lkmendoza
i subscribed to earthquaker 32 years ago.
Yiz, i am waiting to see whats next
Freaking LOVE my Bit Commander. Who doesn't enjoy the sound of computers rising up to revolt against humanity?
Sam Harris and Sarah Connor?
Ef computers .I'm hoping cats take over.
My cat does like this pedal, though.
Your channel is my favorite for demos. Thanks for everything bro
That deerhoof jam session, 14:59 bit commander sounds HUGE @thempalacecrashers
Favorite part is it the nostalgia with this pedal. I've always wanted one. It reminds of seeing Horse the Band as a teenager and realizing I could have 8 bit analog in my music. @swearw01f
I dug who ever did the graphics work on that old ibm style computer animation
@droneroomnotdrones
Favorite part is at 29:16 Rob Scnapf's idea about running a synth into the pedal and put a rat after it. Would definitely try it! @eventhorizonofdoom
I loved the nod to Drunken History.
@christocolombo
My favourite part was the login and computer screen and also the part where the bit commander is right behind the beer lol. Instagram @yesesvi
37:07 is the best part, after watching him awkwardly pun himself through the whole assembly line, and see him reap his harvest. He was vibing, too. No way anyone felt annoyed with that. What a sweet place to work.
Instagram: @hibernative
The re-enactment partbreally got me
@sunshine.chicken.74
My favourite part...Juan Alderete rumblin' on!
@sjmo13
Dave Hill partying with solder is the best. @mark_cool_um thanks dudes you’re the best.
Everyone’s explanation on the way it sounds and what they enjoy about it was so wholesome and awesome. @teddy__grahams
I loved watching the pedal get made start to finish. I’m an amateur pedal maker and it’s cool to see a huge set up like that. @jlemon23
Damn this video felt really emotional to me. It blows my mind just how much influence the Bit Commanderl and Earthquaker in general have on so many artists around the world. "You play to the pedal" was my favourite moment on the video, and it's a statement that connects personally to me as a guy who always looks up for experimentation and sounds that no one has ever heard, that seek for that level of creativity is what drives my whole career. To all of Earthquaker, thank you for your passion and contribution to the music world. I sure hope someday i can play my music through one of your beautiful devices. x @clay.octopus
It's cool they send out a lot of product to appropriate guitarists, - like IDLES,- to experiment with.Good for everyone involved.
Yeah, I don't always buy to gear to satisfy a particular tone idea, more OI buy gear that looks or sounds like it might be cool and then I let it take me on a little voyage of discovery. Guitars too. I don't have a specific design I demand, like neck size and shape. It's fun to grab different stuff and see what it wants to tell me.
39:30 Totally worth. I'd loved to come to the Earthquaker Devices factory and make som pedals myself (live in Norway) @funkpunked
30:42 - Because I really wanted to hear someone play some Super Mario with the bit commander ❤🤖
Ig: @Robbdoggington
7:10 "hair care enthusiast" 😂 Man, I love these series
I miss Juan and Nick. Even their intro where they brag about their first encounter with the pedal. They showcase pedals from unknown to established with an equal love. Explaining every knob and its function. Sense there aren’t many imaginative guitarists and bass players I shout to the pedals and effects!
21:37 nick flexing that smooothe tracking
@euc7zgene
A true master of the strange and awesome
@@PMTluke Truly the strangest, awesomest flag-bearer for one of EQD's flag-ship pedals
all your pedals are belonging to us
all our base signal is belong to you plus more intensity...
I love seeing the behind the scenes of the making the pedals, but my favorite parts were the goofy reenactments! 🤣🤣🤣 instagram: patbright1 (I really hope I win the bit commander. I bought one used on reverb and it never showed up, and then i was strapped for cash afterward. One day I will own it!)
Yeah these are fun love these
Okay honestly from Dave’s leaving the voicemail through him painstakingly building the pedal is the best, his dry comedic personality has me dying laughing 😂 @katiejooh
Favorite part: “Without the bass guitar, The Dead Weather would be nothing.” - @nonformat
If you have a band where the bassist isn't of primary importance,- I don't want to hear it.
Love Nick’s bit commander with the red knobs. Looks and sounds so nice.
Instagram @sean.mcrae98
My favourote par "why do they call it the bit commander?" "It kind of sounds like a sex toy" "im gonna command your bits" approx 31:10
@jakob.durocher
Well done! I love hearing about the journey from breadboard to production, especially the part about the bad initial artwork. @johnsquirrel on IG.
As a father who doesn't want to see his daughter's options to be limited, my favorite part of the video was seeing Jamie Duvak teaching Dave Hill to build a Bit Commander. Sarah Silverman once said "stop telling girls they can be anything they want when they grow up. I think it's a mistake. Not because they can't, but because it would have never occurred to them they couldn't." Great to see a woman building pedals! @stdejr
Favorite parts are literally any time Nick Keinhart is playing, his style is so delightfully weird. @williamwhite578
the Solder bath is awesome. Kids doing a flash back dubbed scene like "Drunk History" was fun. Great to learn about the history of Bit Commander. @koreyzluna
6:01 how in the hell is that soldering job even possible? Thought that type of thing was done in ovens.
“It takes a very steady hand”
Favourite part is Dave. "I got dumped again". @wishmaster_jay_double_flusher
Dude, I love your show your gear/studio videos. This is just as awesome!
Glad you enjoy it!
Love this pedal! @fausto_dog the bit with the Dead Weather is fucking hilarious! Gimme that pedal!!!!
Don’t like the death to death metal song tho. Haters. Shreds Dorian riff sadly in my room 😢
How far you've come! I think when I last came by to meet you guys, you were in the basement of your house. That was back in 2012?
Favorite part: The flashback stories were full on hilarious. Great job showing your pedals with your own style and voice. Instagram: @jayzztop
My favorite parts are torn between the Deerhoof section, the Drunk History-esque flashbacks and everything Dave Hill. @krevmraz
All parts are my favorites, because I love the Earthquake Devices 🍻🍻

Am I the only one that feels awkward about the EHX Mainframe ad coming on during this video showing basically an imitation of this pedal? Maybe I’m reading into it too much.
not awkward for us
@@EarthQuakerDevices I own the Bit Commander and the Acapulco Gold. Amazing pedals! I see a lot of imitations out there but wouldn’t trade them for the world!
Thanks for your undying loyalty! We really appreciate you. Believe that.
@@EarthQuakerDevices Bit Commander is an instrument to me. The way it is, everything about it...I'm glad you guys still make it the same. It's so fun to learn techniques that make it glitch out in a particular way that you are going for, playing it for years and years and years to get consistency with it. Evil sounding thing
Dave Hill driving Jamie crazy breaking parts while building his Bit Commander gave me all of the same gloriously awkward feels of The Office, Season 1. Comedy gold.
My Instagram is @drewmedin
Keep making awesome pedals!
Yeah I couldn’t tell if that was the bit comedically either way it was funny !
My favourite part is when Greg Saunier (always loved Deerhoof especially Milkman) talks about discovering the Bit Commander for a substitute for switching between bass and guitar. I've also always been switching back and forth, and have been thinking about getting a baritone guitar, but lack the funds. This is a great way to get both the bass sounds and bit crushed sounds that I've been craving! I'm now convinced that this is the pedal I've always needed. I really need to replace my crappy Behringer pedals, and get my solo project tuned up.
The sounds also remind me of one of my fave bands Black Cat #13, which makes me pretty excited tbh lol.
Also, the Dio logo Dave draws at 38:17 is pretty sweet haha, cute.
Instagram: @betty2boots
Jamie is super cute just sayin
He is! that beard is amazing! he rocks on relaxer too.
For me the best part was watching Nick Reinhart describing the Bit Commander sound as "kinda splattery". Instagram: @alexbleasdale
opens with Nick Reinhart and Ed Rodriguez…you know it must be good
Around the 9 minute mark my computer experienced an extremely on-brand glitch. This was followed by me thinking that this feels like the opposite of that Kafka book "The Castle". I success story. @trent.lunsford
This is great. Dave's bits (parp) made me laugh. Thanks a lot
Really liked the dusty computer and earthquake devices showing up on the keyboard, really creative and always been a fan of deerhoof . Insta handle - @vyshnav12
The dude in the white hat sounds like Jordan Peterson
This would pair nicely with my new Gray Channel pedal. My favorite part of this video is seeing those old computers. @timj.young
I really love to hear the insight by Jamie. Just listening to him talk about the process is amazing. And the story about the graphic is hilarious 😀 IG: janezhrast
So cool hearing about the artwork for the pedal, I would love to know more about the graphic design for others as I am a nerd for such things. I love EQD artwork. The reenactments were also hilarious! @roberttammanyevans
I loved the part about the initial experimenting that went into this pedal. Very interesting. I’m @srfjason on Instagram.
Amazing piece of art in a pedal, my favorite part always will be be Nick Reinhart playing and talk about it IG: @blazingkai
As always, Nick Reinhart blows me away! (11:50)
IG: Trizio__
Lol, I didn't realize the art was computers either. I never thought of turning it upside down. That was my favorite part of the video for sure.
Any part with Nick Reinhart is my favorite part! IG: @deepspaceash
Karen is everyones problem now, Dave.
😄
I love the reinactment of the breadboarding and the scenes of building the Bit Commander. Reminds me of the day I got to take a tour. I might have to request another :). @thelifeandtimesofstu
"your days are numbered if you bend another resistor like that" @anthony_varone
Juan at around 30mins was my favorite this watch.
@petergorski
Fav parts were Nicks riffs and when Dean appeared
Instagram : minkos_
hearing nick reinhart geek out over this pedal is pure gold
@uhhjakobe
my favorite part was the reenactments, especially the fabulous beards! IG is @brentstewartmusic
I absolutely love what this pedal can do and I’m dying for that French accent talking bout how this pedal is gonna aggressively rip threw my bones! @wisa_woo
Amazing! Haha, the reenactment segments might be my favourite part, but it was awesome hearing all the different takes on what makes this pedal so badass. Instagram handle is @bitcrushed.tiger
I thought it was really interesting seeing how the pedals are made by hand.
ig: @teeeeko_
Favorite part: Dave Hill talking. With his excitability and vigor, I think he'll make a great EQD employee.
@skypants
I think these retrospectives are so cool. I always like hearing the backstories of how these pedals get made. I could also listen to Jaime talk about his designs all day. But if I had to pick my favorite part, it would probably be the Witch Taint song. That and Dave Hill's sweater. @backspin_ranter
Love Nick Reinhart's demos, he knows how to make pedal videos! His playing is also just great, and he is basically a spokesman for you guys and the reason I got into you guys (and got an EQD tattoo 🤪). Interesting video too, didn't realize The Acapulco Gold was similar distortion wise, but totally makes sense because that pedal is also extreme 🤘
IG: @_red_mennnace_
Yeah his band is awesome I’d love to see them live someday ! They are soooooo good
Insta- @liamjdh Love EQD and the work they do. It is great to see a pedal company that is also socially aware and active in areas outside just talking music. The episode was very heartwarming, the best part is at 23:57 where Jamie Says "It doesn't sound GOOD unless it's FULL DISTORTION." That hit home for me. Blast your ears and your heart.
It’s EQD, it’s the best. Simply the best, better than all the rest.
Loved the video, very beautiful and artistic as always.

Lost my heart ♥️ because I updated my message and previously forgot to put my Instagram name in. Please love me lol
“the design used to just be a keyboard”
“yeah that’s terrible”
the camera should’ve cut to EHX’s C9 & Mel9
I loved Dave Hill on the film being all awkward about his breakup but still showing the process of building a Bit Commander! It was interesting to see someone that doesn't work at EQD or builds pedals making one from scratch! Also loved the format for this Retrospective episode, amazing work! @charlie_ysasi
18:50 killer sounding riff ! @gusbraud
Dave Hill is hilarious, but my favorite part is the discussion about the artwork and how it changed 3 times (the reenactment). My Instagram: @calilil
Favourite part is Dave Hill in the Bit Commander build 🤘🏼🤘🏼💪🏼@thomas.tsimpos
“the design used to just be a keyboard”

Seeing Deerhoof!!! @grimace_noise
Nick Reinhart loop and grizzly bass sounds at 11:48 🙌
Instagram: @willemhampson
THIS PEDAL SOUNDS AMAZING! My favorite part of his video is Nick’s demo at 21:40. I love that super retro sound. Great video❤️❤️❤️
My handle is @danielleraap
Thanks for the opportunity!
The eyebrows, the old T.Vs...the accidental Asian subtitles...sex toys and Mason Lodges @ali_bonsai
Favourite part will always be Nick and Juan!!
but also....Dave Hill’s sweater. IG: @mattgrosso_
I like when Dave starts reminiscing about his ex 😂😭 "100K... That's my favorite K." IG @thewhiskeypriest
"I mean I know what populating means I just wanna make sure you do..." THIS GUY LOL. Love it. IG: @jacobryanramage
Too many favorite parts but hearing deerhoof's (Greg Saunier and Ed Rodrigue)history with the pedal and all Nick Reinhart's parts @mandrew_en_mobile
Mikey Juba part at about a half hour in after “3:59” title where he questioned why is it called bit commander. Sounds like a sex toy. Is it going to command your bits? 🤣😂🤷🏼♂️

Love the part where Jamie Suvak breaks down the building process for Dave Hill. She’s feels like such a knowledgeable person. Also that building station made me drool, holy James NESBITT!!! I need one like that. I love the Bit Commander. IG: @noiseconspiracy
My favourite part that probably made me laugh the hardest was the ‘DO NOT DISGRACE ME’ bit. IG is gary_macintyre ❤️
Holy s*** that sound at 28:07!! That’s my favorite part. I have already thought of several songs where that sound would work perfectly!! IG: @jorgeavasquezm
I liked when greg pondered which pickups were the best ones to use, when Jamie talked about dead weather using his pedals and also when the pedal went RRRREAAAAAAAABBBBRRRRRRRBBBRRDBBBBBBB (ig: @tom_mccaffrey)
Anything with Dave Hill cracks me up. Particularly his time populating the Bit Commander while lamenting his recent breakup. “When am I not populating pedals?” A valid question. IG: @mffrosch
that edit on Dean Fertita's technique it's hilariously educating. 10/10 @elmasterdelmambo
My favorite part was an Edith Crash gave the best explanation for what the pedal sounds like. " Its sound is like BUURUHUHR!". Really accurate and precise review hahahahahahaha. @ozorio_nunes
8 bit distorted goodness all round but fav bit (natch) is the dead weather section. DO NOT DISGRACE ME!
INSTA: @cellars_uk
I love how Jeff and Justin crack open a pedal to see what's inside and examine their hand ywork. Dave, "hair care enthusiast" was hilarious! Dumped by a Karen! Hahaha. And, I loved seeing videos of musicians (more specifically, Greg and Ed from Deerhoof) talking about how they use the Bit Commander pedal. @bigben7111
Always love hearing Nick Reinhart talk about EQD pedals. @el_dooweirdo
Love the re-enactment lol @izaiahmilla
I've laughed with the first design part round minute 33, so I'd say that's my favourite one. Not sound related but... that's it.😅 My Instagram @borja_postigo
Jamie’s basement is the best part!!! Knowing this has a drive is super sick !!! And the giving a demo of what it can do. Sub down is exactly what I’m looking for in tone.
