  • Allison Britz developed Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, also known as OCD, upon having a nightmare that she was diagnosed with brain cancer. She began to do everything she could to stop the cancer in her dream from becoming a reality by avoiding certain objects, food and clothing. It got to the point where she had barely any “safe” clothes to wear and weighed 90 pounds. In this conversation, Allison shares what it was like to live with OCD and the different therapies she tried to better understand how these obsessions developed and how to better control the compulsions.

My father lived with severe obsessive compulsive disorder for most of his life. It is a terrible, very real, nightmare of an illness. He was only able to receive so much help by the time he finally sought it out, but even that small amount of help was a huge relief for him. His life was a learning lesson for me, and I'm hoping other family members that deal with this issue too. My uncle, my father's little brother, shot and killed himself in 2017 due to suffering with this illness. He sought help, but clearly, couldn't find relief no matter what he did. It's torture for those that deal with it. Thank you for sharing your experiences, it means a lot to those of us out here whose families have paid a steep price for dealing with OCD. Other issues go hand in hand with the issue, such as Depression, and Addiction. Very real help exists for these issues now, but it's important to seek help earlier on if at all possible. The sooner, the better.

I completely understand her, it’s a horrible feeling and can be very debilitating. It’s scary and I’m working through this as well and I wish it would just go away, it’s very exhausting and I wish this on no one. Thank you for sharing your story.

You two are amazing young women. So brave that you both pushed yourselves outside of your safety nets to explore your own minds and thoughts. I’m so grateful that you have supportive people in your lives. As a mother of OCD grown children, I am truly amazed by your courage! I’m praying that your futures continue to be bright. Not everyone has the access to the proper help and resources. I pray that the access to proper care for others who suffer becomes more, well, accsessable👍🏼

Like Allison says, no rational arguments persuaded her to believe that standing on one leg for so many seconds will prevent her mother from dying of cancer. So, it must be the mood of the moment (anxiety) that inclined her to think so. It looks like she let her mind being open to the possibility of her mother dying if she didn’t perform a particular ritual. That compelled her to comply to what her anxious thought was asking her to do. Instead, what if she opened her mind to the possibility that she’ll never obtain what she wished for through the magical means her imagination came up with? Would that have gradually shifted her mood and helped her explore more realistic ways to show her mother she loved her? Just a thought.

This sounds exactly like my life. My rules were just different. The biggest difference for me was Clomipromine and Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation. Ketamine did not change my thinking but it helped me get through some really hard years when I was very suicidal.

"People that love you will want to help you...." so that confirms my partner doesn't love me. For years said stuff like, "there's something wrong with you, you need to see someone." Even when I got my ADHD diagnosis I didn't feel supported. I finally threatened divorce and now we are seeing a therapist. Funny how they'll believe the therapist about what is hard for me, but all the years I said, "this scenario is challenging, I need help," they thought I was being lazy.
Not sure the trainwreck can be fixed.
But loved the message about taking care of yourself!!

I have symmetry OCD. Can OCD be characterized as an extreme form of perfectionism where anything can lead to anxiety, fear, and distress? Could you be my friend? 🤗😘❤ Now, the world can be a nasty crazy place out there, We cannot control what happens but we can use what happens. We have so much reserves of love and support inside us, if we can just remember that in our mind and move on.

As far as I know OCD is not considered an anxiety disorder anymore (I mean, in terms of DSM-5 classification)
