Wow Rik i am catching up again on your videos and see you're still on the good old fashioned recipes journey which i am thoroughly enjoying. They take me back to good old days & memories. I also love that you are doing many traditional bakes from up & down the UK which like myself many must love. I love everything you do, love how you present it and love how you also enjoy eating them too What a brilliant baker/chef/cook/man you are THANK YOU, just give me time to catchup before you do another video please😂 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
You are a bad man.... Memories flood back to simpler times, however, now as a diabetic, I can only admire and of course get the kids involved and enjoying this timeless treat. Many thanks for the memories and the pain of watching you have my slice.
My mom used to make this when I was a kid. Mom used to say it was something her aunt used to make all the time when she was young. My mom's side of the family was from Scotland and Ireland. She was 2nd generation American. Watching some of these videos reminds me of watching my mom cooking. She always said New England traditions. I think it is actually a British, Scottish, and Irish tradition. I love watching your videos❤
Your mom Is right. They’re definitely British in origin. You can trace lots of them back in old cook books. For example apple pie is English not American, and the oldest written recipe is in an ancient cookbook dating back to the 1300’s called ‘The Forme of Curry’. That book still exists. The English were eating apple, fruit and meat pies long before the USA existed. Early English, Scottish, Welsh and Irish settlers brought with them these recipes. The English brought with them apple seeds to grow apples, as they aren’t native to America. Many, many other recipes crossed the big pond with the forefathers.
Totally fabulous coconut sponge cake. 😋 Just wonderful 💖 with hot custard. Our school served up proper door step portions. Bless those school 🚸 cooks and dinner ladies. More brilliant recipes please thank you 😊
I'm loving these old schools pudding recipes, takes me right back. Half of our school puddings came topped with either chocolate custard or a dollop of a super sweet whipped cream substitute. Thanks for the recipe, it looks amazing!
It was very rare that I managed a pudding at primary school because you had to eat all your dinner first but I don't eat veg. The only time I got pudding was when we had fish n chips or mince & dumplings! I remember this one and also rice pudding with jam in the middle. I still don't eat veg and I'm alive to tell the tale!
Made gluten free version at the weekend for my grandchildren and halved the sugar. It was delicious, clean plates all round and all gone, no left overs!! Thank you, will cook again.
I'm so glad you ate the top of the cake. I was eyeing it off and thinking 'Ooh I would eat that! " and then you did!!!! The pleasures of being the cook, or in your case, the Chef.
I halved the ingredient because i live on my own, cooked it in a silicone tray and did it in my ninja foodi health grill on 150c, it was just perfect, thank you so much x
Here in the US we had a Hostess snack cake called "tiger tail". It was a Twinkie with raspberry jam stripes covered in desiccated coconut! Thank you, Rik, for another delicious looking recipe.
WOW this reminded me of the times our mom used to make this when we got home from school. My mouth is watering. Thanks for the recipe because my mom never showed me how she made it. Yum, and I love Birds Eye custard.😊
Thanks Rik! I made this! For our US friends. Our traditional 9”x13” pans are about half as big in surface area so just add an extra half of all ingredients. It took closer to 30 mins to be ready but came out great. And in the US castor sugar is just ‘ver fine’ granulated sugar.
Looks absolutely delicious! gr8t to indulge in old school sponge & custard, esp in this cold weather here in UK, when you think back we had some really good School puddings!! thank you Rik your enthusiasm is gr8t to watch! God bless you 👏👏🌟😋😋🧁🥘🥳
12.19 /3rd September 2024. Hi rik thankyou for all your hard work. I just love the down to earth format in which you present it . From one Yorkshire man to another . Take care jimi
Rik, we've just made this absolutely banging. Love your no messing about approach to baking . Many more cakes to make now. Have you done an apple crumble?
Ric, why on earth are you not on the main stream Television with your own cooking show? You should be! You are so personable, so friendly and practical and your recipes are outstanding. Good luck in everything you do, much love to you and your family.
Hi, I've just discovered your channel and I am so happy that I have. It's so refreshing to see proper, delicious food being prepared in a down to earth manner in a completely relatable way. Thank you. I remember this from school, and chocolate sponge cake with chocolate custard.... I can't wait to make this and the Eccles Cakes too ( I love Eccles Cakes!) Thank you for sharing these wonderful recipes....maybe put them in a Book? .....right, I'm off to check out some more of your mouth watering goodies 😊
I wonder why it was a school dinner favourite - it's exactly what we got, once a week, at school dinners in the 60s. The slices we got however were smaller, much smaller than what you cut for yourself! And there was no custard to go with it; and I'm sure margarine was in it and not butter! But it didn't prevent us from queuing up for seconds, like Oliver Twist. Only the first 4 or 5 kids got more.
Oh, my giddy aunt. That looks fantastic. It DOES take me back. I have to try this. P.S. Burns' night. On the menu: Haggis, creamed mashed tatties and mashed turnip. Homemade clootie dumpling and custard. Can't wait.
Rik, just a little tip I learned when cooking cakes. Cover the top with pre-prepared greaseproof paper halfway through baking to prevent the top from browning too much. This is especially useful when cakes batters are more liquid and take a long time to bake on a low temp.
The only thing I can think of that comes close to this is a snack cake called Zingers. I can tell you, we never had treats like this in our school lunches. Thanks for another wonderful recipe Rik ❤❤❤
Rik, this reminds me of my favorite Hostess treat: the Raspberry Zinger! Oh my goodness, it looks soooo good!!! I'm making it for the next bring a dish meal I go to. This has to be shared! Thank you once again for bringing us amazing dishes!! 🥰🥰🥰
Here's another recipe {not sure if you have made it as I am still going through your videos} Manchester Tart, or Curd Tart...Both equally tasty. The portions were small as I remember. Thank you for another excellent classic So good to hear your delight and the look of pure heaven on your face
This looks absolutely amazing, and another "to make" on my list. I love that you are doing some "old school dinner" recipes at the moment, but i would love to see some easy Thai recipes of desserts that we could try (if we would be able to get the ingredients in UK). Keep up the great work. I enjoy watching what you make, regardless if i would make and eat them myself.
How good does that look? We never had lunches at school. Looking at all the fabulous things you make, I realise I really missed out! Have got quite a list of must-try items now - thanks!
That looks super moist and I can’t almost taste that sweet but tangy raspberry jam. Just yummy topped off with some creamy custard. Wish I had seen this before I just popped a rice pudding in the HySapientia- another day for sure.
The recipes you make remind so much of my favourite school dinners. I started following you a short while ago. Does anyone remember the chocolate toothpaste tart? 🤔 Love it if you could make this 🙂
