This is really great. The best Windows 8.1 optimization guide I've ever seen. Though I disagree with the removal of Windows Media Player as my Xbox 360 could really use it along with Media Center for MP4s and DVD/TS... Also for those with dual boot systems like Linux on a separate NVMe SSD, leave "Time to list Display of OS" on. I can live without Pokki and Classic Shell. Turns out an OEM install without a product key to activate Windows isn't so bad. Nothing OS or user breaking happened yet.
I couldn't deal with the metro :/ I found classic shell within 2 days and installed it. Never looking back. The only thing that I EVER used on it would be the app store for free games.
I just switched few hours ago to 8.1 Pro, I am loving it! I don´t see all the hate on the new start menu, it´s pretty nice actually. I never used the old skool start menu anymore anyway! Also, I have an AMD FX processor, and on WIN7 it really ran like shit. I already noticed that games run surprisingly smoother :O and load times are less

On 3:24 I do not have "Local Disk (C:)". Mine just says "windows" and what exactly is SSD again? Kinda new at this. When you said "make sure to turn this off", i am not sure if i want to be turning off and deleting my system protection. Does it matter to whether or not to do that feature for gaming or is there another alternative to boost my gaming experience?
As long as it has a Windows logo, it's the right thing. However, I STRONGLY recommend that you leave System Protection alone. This guy is really stupid - if something bad happened to his PC (i.e it stopped booting), he would have to spend hours re-installing Windows and would lose everything he hasn't got a backup of. With System Protection on, you can spend 5 minutes restoring to a restore point made before the problem even occurred.

Make sure System Protection is turned on. NEVER TURN IT OFF, BECAUSE IF SOMETHING WRONG HAPPENS WITH YOUR PC WHILE IT IS OFF YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO RESTORE TO AN EARLIER POINT.
i dont know how would you "break" windows, especially when you are power user. nevertheless even if something happened you can use installation media to recove your windows to working condition.
+Kony if a Windows update messes up and stops your PC from booting it will boot to the recovery screen where you can restore it to the point before it did the update. If you have system protection turned off the only way you can fix it is if you reinstall Windows which means you will need to reinstall all of your programs and re-do all of your settings and waste a day or so getting your system back to how you like it. With system restore on you just wait 5 minutes for it to go back to the previous point and keep on going like nothing happened.

Sorry to say, but the only way you will increase performance in games is either overclocking or buying new hardware. Deleting programs, editing registry, clearing ram(unless you are using 2-4GB ram), etc. will not increase performance at all.
All these things wont really improve your gaming experience but it will make things that use your HHD / SSD a little faster when doing things like internet browsing. start up times may also be improved.
Why do you use VLC? Have you tried MPC HC? Or better yet, the Kawaii Codec Pack which includes MPC HC and its a very easy to install pack with every LAV codec for audio and video and offers much much better audio visual quality than VLC and pretty much any other program out there. Also, if you like crystal clear audio quality for your music, use AIMP3. I think it's hands down the best sounding music player on Windows right now.
Hi There at 1:24 you were able to get rid of the main windows start menu I have Pokki installed but when I right click the windows main menu the option to get rid of it like you do doesnt show ? Im on windows 8.1 and the option you selected is nt there :/ any help :)
may i suggest start menu 8 from iobit for the start menu, it gives you more customisability than pokki, you can even create your own button picture really easily!

This pokki thing is actually really fucking sweet. Like, i might not even get Windows 10 now.. i think i like 8.1 with pokki more. The windows 10 alt tabbing is super good, thats probably the only thing i'd want.

For those who cant remove the windows start button in 8.1 just Google "Start Killer" It works better then 7+ because it only has one use. You can even disable the metro UI so the start button won't show up when you put your mouse over the edge.

Good video. But I do not recommend to turn off hibernation if you are using a mechanical HDD as the main drive. Because windows 8 goes into a sort of hibernation mode when you shut it down and therefore it will boot up a lot quicker on mechanical HDD's than when it is off. I turned it off on my laptop which has a mechanical HDD in it and booting it took way longer, so i turned it back on (powercfg -h on) and my laptop booted quick as hell again. I also have windows 8.1 on my desktop which has an ssd as its main drive and it does not need the hibernation, so I disabled it like brian did in this video and saved myself some space.

It's not good for productivity and heavy work, there are some compatibility issues with programs I use, It's full of microsoft bloatware and other annoyances that I hate (yeah, they can be disabled, but I shouldn't have to do that), and on top of all IT'S TERRIBLY UGLY! I'm a graphic designer and a 3D artist. I like pretty good looking things, I like depth, and I HATE the flat design trend. Windows 8/8.1/8.2(10) is blant, gray, uncomfortable, confusing and to some people (like my family) even claustrophobic. And enough with the damage control already. Micro$oft fucked it up, and they don't want to let it go. Not to mention that in my country even M$ tech support advises people to go back to windows 7.

Hi. You seem very well versed about win 8.1. I have really weird problem with mine. Shortly described: While playing WOT my computer drops to desktop / or flashes the desktop view for a second pausing the game dead in water, forcing me to push again buttons few times to move or to shoot. (At times, even when writing this it seems that the ability to type 'stalls' making me write a letter again or drop one.) In other words the desktop is stealing attention (though it does not seem to fall back to it completely when doing something). There is only Razer Comms running aside to communicate with the clan and what ever happens on back ground generally. None the less in-game the desktop view flashes to my face - not only messing with focus of computer page, but my ability to focus to the game (really really annoying). This happens weather I am in active battle or at garage - not even touching the computer at all. I have run malewarebytes, partial ccleaner (as I really dont want to loose passwords and some other things) and my F-Secure (security) has removed anything suspicious it found. So there was some pups and some other virus - none the less nothing removes the issue. I have tried closing Akamain NetSession Client (cause I googled around finding not much anything about this kind of issue on 8.1). Idk if this extra info has anything to it - as it changed from only stealing focus to desktop to the flashing the desktop view for the second to me when I started to close ActiveDesktop and all google chromes prior to gaming - none the less the issue is there and wont move away. Before I had to actually click the game icon down the screen to return. In-fact - when this started my WOT also did something weird. Without any update, on first attempt to fix issue and restarting WOT - it behaved as though there had been some major update showing 'commercial pop-ups' that are usually shown as entering in game only once - my map was gone, when activated way smaller than I use it, all sound settings were set back to full, battle starting window was different, even some personal key-functions were changed back to 'standard'. Yet at the same time some of those personal settings still were there as should be. Contacting Microsoft they are telling me to 1. Run checkup on system files. If not working 2. Run restoring with updates saving the personal files (including having to make huge backups for personal settings and passwords and and to be restored in some way). 3. Even to fully restore to previous stage (I have no idea what is mine though I think it would exist as it should be activated that function). But as you can see I did not eat the computer manual for breakfast.. I just like to play games - so I find those quite aggressive and bit scary to even try cause I don't feel certain I wont mess it up. Can you think of anything simple to solve this? Aww yes I do have blugin for 'win7 desktop' - but that aside - if you have that idea - pls be very specific of the steps cause I will be fighting with language issues too - my computers is kinda half English half Finn and I am not sure always what is what.
My computer was fixed by putting a program to stop the win 10 update. The issue had started when they made the 'update popup commercial' into the kind to suggest a date for the update. When that feature was added in with some update - my computer actually crashed suddenly.. and after that it began to drop down to the desk top for what ever reason. Well - it does not happen anymore. But beneath it appeared to be a second issue too. It seems to not allow my normal win 8.1 updates to go through anymore. Go figure - have done some manually - but grouped wont do. I don't care about it that much right now though. At least it runs without other issues.

Just want to point out a problem I had when turning off Windows features. Before Windows would let me do that I needed to run Windows update and let it do its thing.
i have an cybertronpc borg Q and when i turn it on it beeps #1 time then it shows the name of my pc what it is running and then all the drivers and etc. then it loads to desk top what can i do to stop this it is running 8.1 I didn't upgrade to windows 10 i tried it but went back to 8.1 can you tell me why its doing this.

Nice video, got a few good tips, some of it I had done allready. You also turn of a few features which I use activly but thats up to the individual user of course. As for the metero UI I actually prefer it now compared to the traditional start menu, may be its because I've on windows 8 since the beta. The only thing I use the metro / startmenu for anyway is searching for programs, and once you turn of the animations it does that just as good.

In win7 (I still have it) its optimal to turn off core parking in order to get optimal usage of HT (only with i7s), when it is possible. Otherwise it just messes up cpu usage and that will cause microlagg, just to spare 5 watt power consumption.. is there such a thing on 8.1?

how to get rid of apps(if they slowing down) like : Alarms , Food & Drink , Money and more. I was R-click on them then uninstall ,but when i start windows(8.1) they are there again
this video gave me an error with FIFA 15. I think it was "turning off hard disk" setting. Just a heads up in case you have any issues with games that previously worked.

What maker for GTX 980 do you have installed? Are you getting excessive noise or Coil whine?
Been using classic shell for years, simple install for a basic start menu and lots of customization if you want.

Without any update, on first attempt to fix issue and restarting WOT - it behaved as though there had been some major update showing 'commercial pop-ups' that are usually shown as entering in game only once - my map was gone, when activated way smaller than I use it, all sound settings were set back to full, battle starting window was different, even some personal key-functions were changed back to 'standard'. Yet at the same time some of those personal settings still were there as should be. Contacting Microsoft they are telling me to 1. Run checkup on system files. If not working 2. Run restoring with updates saving the personal files (including having to make huge backups for personal settings and passwords and and to be restored in some way). 3. Even to fully restore to previous stage (I have no idea what is mine though I think it would exist as it should be activated that function). But as you can see I did not eat the computer manual for breakfast.. I just like to play games - so I find those quite aggressive and bit scary to even try cause I don't feel certain I wont mess it up. Can you think of anything simple to solve this? Aww yes I do have blugin for 'win7 desktop' - but that aside - if you have that idea - pls be very specific of the steps cause I will be fighting with language issues too - my computers is kinda half English half Finn and I am not sure always what is what.
My computer was fixed by putting a program to stop the win 10 update. The issue had started when they made the 'update popup commercial' into the kind to suggest a date for the update. When that feature was added in with some update - my computer actually crashed suddenly.. and after that it began to drop down to the desk top for what ever reason. Well - it does not happen anymore. But beneath it appeared to be a second issue too. It seems to not allow my normal win 8.1 updates to go through anymore. Go figure - have done some manually - but grouped wont do. I don't care about it that much right now though. At least it runs without other issues.
I have a hard drive not an SSD but do hard drives get faster from deleting things I'd think so since it's constantly reading and writing

Just want to point out a problem I had when turning off Windows features. Before Windows would let me do that I needed to run Windows update and let it do its thing.
i have an cybertronpc borg Q and when i turn it on it beeps #1 time then it shows the name of my pc what it is running and then all the drivers and etc. then it loads to desk top what can i do to stop this it is running 8.1 I didn't upgrade to windows 10 i tried it but went back to 8.1 can you tell me why its doing this.

Tip MPC-HC x64 is better than VLC in quality and has more features. VLC is still a great media player I just find that MPC is way better IMO.

Nice video, got a few good tips, some of it I had done allready. You also turn of a few features which I use activly but thats up to the individual user of course. As for the metero UI I actually prefer it now compared to the traditional start menu, may be its because I've on windows 8 since the beta. The only thing I use the metro / startmenu for anyway is searching for programs, and once you turn of the animations it does that just as good.
No option to disable windows start menu button with Pokki...not even an option....

In win7 (I still have it) its optimal to turn off core parking in order to get optimal usage of HT (only with i7s), when it is possible. Otherwise it just messes up cpu usage and that will cause microlagg, just to spare 5 watt power consumption.. is there such a thing on 8.1?

how to get rid of apps(if they slowing down) like : Alarms , Food & Drink , Money and more. I was R-click on them then uninstall ,but when i start windows(8.1) they are there again
this video gave me an error with FIFA 15. I think it was "turning off hard disk" setting. Just a heads up in case you have any issues with games that previously worked.
