Very Good Video, BTW The cloud icon also means you do not need to close that window, and it can be left open while you work in other locations in FH.

Thank you Jane, I suppose I could have made that more clear and will do in follow on videos.

If Family Historian came out with a version that ran on a Mac, I'd leave RootsMagic in a flash.
While RM meets my needs, my experience has been that it really doesn't run that well on a Mac. Most of the alternative genealogy programs that suit my needs are Windows only. The ones that are available for the Mac seem to concentrate more on pretty graphics than features that aid in serious research and reporting.
So; here's hoping that Family Historian releases something that would excecute on a Mac. :>)

Family Historian has many Mac users, try searching or visiting the FHUG. I did notice that RM8 went very much more punchy graphics but as I always said "pretty graphics don't forward my research"

Good Video/well done. Maybe a little over critical of RM but in most cases accurate. Like you I tried FH7 (trial) but ran out of time to evaluate during the trial period. So your video was helpful in contrasting the benefits of FH7 over RM/RM8.

Thank you, I remember you from the Rootsmagic forums and I also ran out of time on my free FH trial, there is just so much to grasp. Having been with FO/RM since around 1997 and a tester for RM8 I am truly sorry there are so many negative reflections on Rootsmagic. Many of my followers come from Rootsmagic days and they seek true comparisons and demonstrations. It's very disappointing RM have been deleting negative user comments but as a result I aim to provide researcher's with truthful comparisons. Still stringing users along with a slower program 2 years after public access is not a good look and hard to portray in a positive light.

@@GenealogySoftware to put a positive spin, RM8 has so much potential and falls short in many ways for many people. FH has much more to grasp. The Query feature itself would take 30 days to get your feet wet. RM has SQL (which I am fairly comfortable with). I have seen RM turn off commenting but I have not see post/threads removed. Just under two years ago I left FTM after using them for over 17 years (most due the Sync corrupting). At that time I purchased license for both $25 for both RM7 & RM8 and still not sorry that I did. That said I am not satisfied with the current product. From what I seen the only two worth products are RM8 and FH7. Do you have any suggestions on additional content of FH7 queries (yours or others)?

About 14 min. in you show linking the parts of the family photo and the mother, Lena, has both the group photo and the part of it linked but the group photo seems to be the default for her image on the chart. Is there a way to select which image to use?

would love to use DB as a cloud backup for my FH folder, but it's over 2 GB, at least currently... I might import from RM again and not add the images to the project folder and see if that helps...
Loved your presentation and learned some new FH tricks :)

Teresa, thank you, I prefer to keep all my media in a folder structure I have built up over the years, media management remains a big challenge for many. You could apply the same backup principle to OneDrive or Google drive where the free storage is greater.

I'm very interested in downloading and using FH, so I have been reading about and watching videos like this one (many more to see). One thing I want to be absolutely clear on -- Can I work on it offline, as well as online? I already have a huge tree on Ancestry that goes back to about 700AD via just 3 roots of my mom's maternal line. Also have 2 brothers that married 2 sisters, 2 sons of a common ancestor that come back down [more recent] to a single great-grandmother over 4&5 generations so are great-grand or great-uncle to me depending on which route to take, and cousins marrying cousins. Hence, Ancestry is doing flip-flops while multiplying ancestors unnecessarily. I would like to be able to try and clean up some of this mess offline. Possible???

    • @GenealogyReviews
      @GenealogyReviews  2 года назад +1

Yes perfectly possible and works perfectly offline. I don't rate Ancestry or other online databases for handling your kind of complex tree, that is where professional genealogy software exceeds.

I do love FH. Wish it was native to Linux through a Flatpak. I just hate having to be stuck in Windows personally, so I use FH with Gramps.

Thank you I have been trying to find videos that show someone using Family Historian. I am thinking of switching to it. The things I would like to see is a video on using the research log, witness section and to do task. These are things that I am most interested in.

Very helpful as I am digging into FH. Thanks. Question ... how did you create the dyberrycensus chase list? specifically listing all the censuses.

Hi Michael, I can't take credit for the base query, it was on the FH downloads page and I adapted it to my needs.
      fhug.org.uk/kb/download-type/query/
Also check out the Plugin store, no point in re-inventing the wheel.

The find results were created from the query
then the Named Group/List was created from the query results
So simple and a nice natural flow without dead ends

I've moved to FH7 from RM7 after studying your tutorials for which I very much thank you. They're really excellent and I think the best and I hope you'll do more. Did you have a problem with shared facts moving over - in the FH7 fact types I now have the word 'witnessed' which I can't alter and it makes some of my facts look wrong - like 'witnessed will' which my subject didn't. They didn't appear in RM7 like that. Other than making new facts and deleting the 'witnessed' type ones I don't know what else I can do. Please keep your reviews coming when you can. Thank you.

Harry, thank you for tour kind comments but in relation to your question I did not have a problem with Witness Roles transferring to FH and I would not waste time correcting one by one. I am away from base until the weekend but I would recommend going to groups.io/g/family-historian and signing up to ask your question there, I would also recommend searching the FHUG for possible other similar questions. The groups.io is easier in some ways as you can easily post photos but the FHUG has many more members ready to help. I would want to see a screenshot of how your Roles were set up in RM before the direct import to better understand the possible reasons.

Trying to setup Named list for census like yours but when I copy the query over to named list I only get family names and the name of the Query in the columns. Can you do a tutorial on how you have your Family Historian setup and how you did it?
