I call hax on the 'root beer float' trick. (let's see it at a contest) It's probably just a more sophisticated version of those toys you see that can 'levitate' a spinning top using magnets. Most yoyos are aluminum however, but some bearings are steel which is magnetic. (stainless steel isn't) Anyway, great video.
It is called coolant. it is an oil that they put in the tool and part so the cuts are smoother, extend the life of the tool, and to cool the part down.
I remember when Yo-Hans and Kate Miller used to go around to all the malls in Arizona and do demos at Proyo kiosk stands. I had no idea he was still messing around with yoyo's. That's crazy he is still making the best yoyo's
@Jalehjoon Well the yo-yos in this video do not stick to a magnet, they are aluminum. You would need one made out of steel or something, so I'm not sure.
id say the root beer float is done by spinning the yo-yo so fast that it creates something like a cushion of air between it and the floor. that ways it will float.
If you look at the video, he only shows his left hand. I think his right hand id directly below the yoyo moving around. The hubstack was replaced with a magnet.
there is a fan underneath the yoyo. You can tell because he passes his had really quick underneath and when he does the yoyo drops a little. that is also why he only has to remove his top finger for it to lift
Just noticed that the segment at 4:00 is a little smaller is screen size compared to the rest of the vid... and you can't see Benny's (I think it's Benny holding the yoyo string) right hand properly.
That is pretty amazing! I do have a guess though, maybe there's like ridges in the yo-yo where air goes through it fast enough and it produces lift??????? Idk awesome trick though!!!!!!!!
You guys might wanna look in to magic tricks.. there is a prop called the tarantula (youtube it) and the effect created in this video might as well be done with something similar.
See :58 and 1:02 It is an alum or steel with some magnetic rings added. Bottom line it is magnets repelling each other. It does take some skill to maintain the balance. Very cool. At :58 his other arm is following the yoyo as it floats away from him. 1:02 it drops as his hand momentarily breaks the magnet field. Cool stuff though.
Ahhh Higby this has been stumping me for ages! Whenever I come back in watch it I can't figure it out I know its not invisible threads Or magnets Does it have to do with magnetic force holding the yoyo up?
I'm just gonna assume its a tool in magic called a loop, an almost invisible rubber band like piece of elastic. The G5 would be balancing on the loop. I can tell everyone now its not a fan,if look you can see that his hand goes off screen when he does the trick. However even if I'm wrong part of the fun is not knowing once you know how a trick is done it kind of takes the fun out of it.
@ryanhayn As mentioned before it is a stock aluminum G5+ available for sale at the time. Not steel sorry but we would love to see how a magnet works with a steel yoyo.
correct me if im wrong, but isnt a tarantula where you have an item tied on a thin string to your shirt? Because this is traveling between people, and the wait of a yoyo would have a very obvious effect ona shirt...
They use Machines called Lathes. They spin a pice of round stock and touch a tool to it to shave down the stock into what ever you want in this case it is a yoyo. The Lathes they use are called CNC lathes. They make a program and upload it to the CNC and it machines the part they want by its self.
They are selling to retailers though at half the price people are buying them for and it is not cheap to make these, it has nothing to do with rare with cost of materials. Besides, they have led the market with affordable aluminum metal yo-yos.
the yoyo is spining in the air thanks to inertial forces. He spins the yoyo with big force and thanks to that it's spining in the air. (sory for the spelling I am Bulgarian).
also the reason that works with a ping pong ball is because of its shape. the air can flow easily around a sphere on all sides so it hovers in the stream. a yoyo is not the right shape you see...
@yoyohigby i find it highly unlikely that a trick to make a object float isnt involved with a propulsion from a fan, magnetics or just some clear string
I want to see the inside of the yoyo. what is making it give off thrust it's like a little jet turbine that is really cool. they could probably make one that has so much thrust it flies up into the air like a ufo.
I have the yo-yo and play with it all the time it is a stock grey G5+ nothing was done to it except get scratches from falling on the ground once and a while. Sorry!
Just because magnets aren't attracted to aluminum doesn't mean aluminum doesn't react to magnets. It wouldn't even require an electromagnet to get the aluminum to react. Do a Google search of Lenz's Law in relation to aluminum. At rest, aluminum isn't affected by a magnet, but while moving (yo-yo spinning) the magnet would repel the aluminum. Not saying that is the solution, but the aluminum could very well be affected by a magnet.
Looks like crazy fun john!
And I love the ole timey factory bits in there aswell.
О, помните то чудное время, когда детей интересовали трюки с йо-йо, а не тик ток и прочий ужас? Sweet time...
how a yo yo is born:
open door. close door. take cigarrette. smoke said cigarrette.
you have a new yo yo!
Nice floating trick,
I'm going to buy a can of compressed air and try it myself, hopefully it has enough pressure....
I call hax on the 'root beer float' trick. (let's see it at a contest)

Anyway, great video.
Root beer float was sick. lol
The floating one is a grey G5+ and the one being made is the 401sd.
Did anybody figure out how the g5 floats yet????
There's a wind blowing machine undereath
idk why this video makes me emotional. still lmao

ive watched this video for 4 hours trying to figure out how he does it. i know the answers its because hes MAGIC!!!!
@Jalehjoon Well the yo-yos in this video do not stick to a magnet, they are aluminum. You would need one made out of steel or something, so I'm not sure.
@NikFromNYC Sounds cool! No magnets at all were used in this though.
I remember when this video game out and my mind was blow. Back on yoyo nation.
This was a great video.
id say the root beer float is done by spinning the yo-yo so fast that it creates something like a cushion of air between it and the floor. that ways it will float.
It's been almost 4 years. Tell us already!!!!!
you're obviously disrupting airflow with your hand, so that's a light yoyo and a neat fan :)
Man, i wanna work there!!
Lucky guy, Mr. Higby. I want to go there and see how stuff works... :(
If you look at the video, he only shows his left hand. I think his right hand id directly below the yoyo moving around. The hubstack was replaced with a magnet.

i find the manufacturing process really intresting

I know its not invisible threads
Or magnets
Does it have to do with magnetic force holding the yoyo up?
I don't think they are out yet.
You are right! It is NOT floting, it is FLOATING!
really cool video!!! I don't really know how did you let it fly. How???????how????
Yep. I totally forgot the simple logic behind that. I was just too amazed at this stunt.
I'm just gonna assume its a tool in magic called a loop, an almost invisible rubber band like piece of elastic. The G5 would be balancing on the loop. omg hows the root beer float done like so cool
@ryanhayn As mentioned before it is a stock aluminum G5+ available for sale at the time. Not steel sorry but we would love to see how a magnet works with a steel yoyo.
@sajkam5 Not sure but it is a G5+ used in the video.
@PlumpkinPied Nope, the yo-yo is made from Aircraft Aluminum which does not respond to magnets. Stock grey G5+
I'm not totally sure what town it was in. But near Gilbert I think.
correct me if im wrong, but isnt a tarantula where you have an item tied on a thin string to your shirt? Because this is traveling between people, and the wait of a yoyo would have a very obvious effect ona shirt...
Haha someone on the inside told me it is indeed, a fan.
G5+ no longer available but the Superstar is close and retails for around $110
They use Machines called Lathes. They spin a pice of round stock and touch a tool to it to shave down the stock into what ever you want in this case it is a yoyo. The Lathes they use are called CNC lathes. They make a program and upload it to the CNC and it machines the part they want by its self.
Has the RBF ever been performed outside of the YYF Factory ?
401sd prototype and that is the yo-yo they were working on and machining the day I filmed.
@vicman7usa It is not magnets, sorry! This is a stock G5+ which is aluminum and is not affected by Magnetism.
They are selling to retailers though at half the price people are buying them for and it is not cheap to make these, it has nothing to do with rare with cost of materials. Besides, they have led the market with affordable aluminum metal yo-yos.
air made by the yoyo causes it to float in mid air?
is there a fan type thing in the yo-yo?
how do u get the yoyo to fly?? it looks so cool please tell me.
so this was the G5 that was floating?
the yoyo is spining in the air thanks to inertial forces. He spins the yoyo with big force and thanks to that it's spining in the air. (sory for the spelling I am Bulgarian).
i think the power of the yoy is makeing the air spin so it floats (my thoughts)
also the reason that works with a ping pong ball is because of its shape. the air can flow easily around a sphere on all sides so it hovers in the stream. a yoyo is not the right shape you see...
so john, how did they do it?
How is the yo-yo floating
DARN IT! There's something under it at 1:15~1:17 though. It's between the hubstack and rims... could that be... ?
Yeah. Pull start and let it go sideways. It really works
G5+ actually for floating and machining the 401sd.
Hes using loops which are strings that can strech up to 5 times there size and they transparent.
lol that guys holding $10000 in yoyos under one arm like its nothing
I'm also wondering how the yoyo is floating...
omg yoyofactory is in arizona???
do those machines use lasers to cut the yoyos?
can u tell me the process of making a yoyo how do the proffesionals do it
@yoyohigby i find it highly unlikely that a trick to make a object float isnt involved with a propulsion from a fan, magnetics or just some clear string
@logdogfrog yes, aircraft aluminium is famed for its anti-gravity properties.
@OcelotPwns Well, not all YYF are made in China but yes this is filmed in AZ.
I want to see the inside of the yoyo. what is making it give off thrust it's like a little jet turbine that is really cool. they could probably make one that has so much thrust it flies up into the air like a ufo.
does anyone know what stores sell the Yo Yo Factory yo yos? not online stores like Wal-Mart and stuff
@noper12345 I actually don't know, but it's easy to tell there's magnets because it vibrates up and down
If you work at a YYF Factory, Do you get discounts, or test them out?
I have the yo-yo and play with it all the time it is a stock grey G5+ nothing was done to it except get scratches from falling on the ground once and a while. Sorry!
There are only a few retailers that sell outside of the web. Where are you at?
i think its air shooting up too
guys it is a magnet well electro magnet i think its the same concept as those floating magnet tops (search youtube theres vids of how they work)
@yoyohigby
magnets? or that ball in their
i dont get it....how does the yoyo actually float? is it spinning really fast or something?
omg is that hydra?
@yoyohigby i know it has to do with the room you are in to do the root beer float
How does that work? Blows air out otif it or something like that?
I filmed this and made the movie.
how do you do it? i mean... no one seems to know... are there small pallets like in a propellor undernieth making it float?! or what please tell us!
Pretty obvious that there's a fan under it (much like the levitating ping-pong ball trick) because of the swiping hand @ 1:05.
Well it is not anything like that but I would love to experiment more with this type of thing for performance.
maybe because there is air blowing from underneath it? dunno
Are G5s able to float too?
can u do that with the YYF skyline?
how does that work!?
i know they use lathes. it seems they use water to cool it. i know most modders use the TAIG lathe
ehm... plz name of the yoyo that float and how it cost thx it's relly cool :D
hey this song is in wrc 2.
I WANA WORK HEAR!!!!! what would i have to study what college classes would i have to take to work in such an awesome place!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
i like yo-yo tricks o---------O
Will this work with a grind machine?
Its not a fan. Its a magnet. Your assuming the g5 is aluminum. Kind of like the floating pen trick.
It's a steel yoyo that floats using magnets.
how do u do the rootbeer float? it confuses me.
@MooneyFUN Nope, stock G5+ is aluminum and is not magnetic, sorry.
