I live in Montreal and so does Pat Patterson. Seen him walking down Ste. Catherine's a few times. I'll yell out "Hey Pat!!' He smiles and keeps on walking. Took a picture with him once on Crescent Street, Cool guy.
As I remember hearing it, Pat Patterson saw a classic "Battle Royal" where everyone starts in the ring and he was the one who came up with the timer and one guy showing up at a time like they do in the Royal Rumble.
The problem about commentary today is that despite the fact that they've got two former wrestlers on their team, they have three storyline commentators and no wrestling commentators. When people watch a wrestling match, they don't need three people talking about the relationship between the guys in the ring. When Matt Stryker was still commentating, alot of people didn't like him, but I liked that he actually took an effort to call matches from a wrestler's perspective, like talking about the effects of the various moves and holds, and referencing past matches of the wrestlers when discussing their strategy.
I actually think the crappy crowds play a bigger part than the commentary because back in maybe 04 and years before that the crowds would participate and feel something for every character even the mid to lower card characters would get a crowd reaction
I totally agree with solomonster!... whoever doesn't, is totally kidding themselves. How many times have I wanted to go to a live event and said "but what about the commentary, I'm going to miss it". It was that crucial to me, I couldn't watch wrestling without it, I needed it. I needed the wise words, fan fair from commentators like Jim Ross and Jerry king(taz wasnt bad when tamed, cus man he doesn't have a leash at all when he is on TNA)... I needed the thoughts of the wrestling verbal sages in the form of those commentators. Today is just straight annoying, NONSENSICAL ranting, Cole is a tool and a half, JBL while entertaining in the beginning is now a screaming fool! they constantly cut each other off(what a headache), Jerry kinda lost his touch but I don't really blame him, I mean you could only do so much with what you got. Having a mute option isn't a bad idea but doesn't really fix anything. how about some young guns on the mic or what Vince did in the past and have wrestlers become full time commentators, um maybe that isn't such a good idea either cus Dwight Shrute from "The Office" said it best, these guys have "Microphonophobia".... the standard for a wrestler in today's world doesn't need charisma what so ever. so.... um... yea! we are doomed lol
Ironically enough, when I think of what killed WCW, one of the things I think that gets overlooked is how terrible their commentary team became. It's criminal that you have so many DVDs that talk about how WCW folded without at least once mentioning that dreadful name known as "Mark Madden".
I don't think JR took as much shit from gorilla as much as michael cole did and does... That's why cole always seems so scattered and even has to remind himself on air to get back into the match they are calling. I find they're so busy promoting so many things it's taking away horribly from the matches itself. Especially shows when they go off base on Ambrose's matches when they should be telling a story to the audience while he tells his story in the ring. That's what put half the guys over in attitude era was they way they'd put over the story telling happening in the ring. We miss that now that Heyman and JR are out of the booth.
Man if Jim Ross, Bobby Heenan, Gordon Solie and Gorilla Monsoon had the chance to do a Wrestlemania together it would have been a instant classic with there voices alone.
Jim Johnston never heard of him before this shit. Your point is soooooo valid he is not given nearly enough credit. The intro music was fuckin EVERYTHING if the intro wasnt fresh no body fucked wit you.
Jim Ross and Jerry Lawler are the best WWE play-by-play men in both the ATTITUDE era and the Ruthless Aggression era (I grew up with the Ruthless Aggression era though).
Jim Ross is the Gordon Solie of my generation. When he wasn't being antagonized by the King, he was calling a great wrestling match with the proper names of the moves sometimes. He would say Belly To Back Suplex instead of German Suplex, which is the correct name for the move. Taz on Smackdown would say German Suplex. I was never a fan of Goldberg but Jim Ross made Goldberg's 3 moves look more impressive just by his commentary and his reactions. I could watch Goldberg with Ross on commentary.
I would try and get Joey Styles back on to replace Michael Cole and its time for Jerry to retire. So Joey Styles and JBL would be the team I would use for awhile.
Oh, I've been saying this for literally a few years now, that the poor quality of the commentary is mainly what's dragging the shows down and I missed Jim Ross pretty much as soon as he retired from announcing. I keep saying that WWE needs to make wrestling feel 'real' again and by that I don't mean not have any storylines or anything like that but at least have the damn commentators take the matches seriously. There is just no need for it to be so poor now....Jim Ross was arguably the best but the likes of Tony Shiavone, Gorilla Monsoon, Bobby Heenan...hell, even Vince McMahon himself when he was on commentary all did a much, much much better job than Cole/Lawler/JBL do now. How hard can it be to get better announcers? Even William Regal on NXT makes those 3 look like crap.
If you don't like the commentary I advice you to watch Raw on SAP with the Spanish announcers. They make it more enjoyable even if you don't understand them.
Yes, the WWF product in the '80s up to the mid-'90s was PG. What most people don't seem to realize -- specifically this younger WWE generation -- is that the PG product of that era compared with today's PG product is like comparing prime rib to bologna. Everything about the pre-Attitude Era period was just better, by leaps and bounds! Even during their lull from 1992-1996 when business was bad and the company was in danger of going under, the writing and booking was still decent, they still used blood when it was warranted, match quality was top notch and nobody apologized for anything. Vince back then took great pride in the product he was presenting, no matter how bad things got. It was still FUN! Now, everything is so watered down, buttoned-up and PC that it's unbearable to watch....
I agree that commentating makes things better... Prime example: Taker vs Michaels at WM26 it was a classic but it was missing something, JR... it would've sounded better...
What's sad is that, for JR's MANY contributions to the success of WWE, Vince has always hated him, and never passed on an opportunity to degrade and humiliate him. And he couldn't wait to finally push JR out of the door for good a couple of years back. Vince McMahon, legendary as he may be in the business, can be a real piece of shit. On another note, remember that Michael Cole actually did do commentary with Lawler for a while back in 99 while JR was out sick. And yea...he was pretty horrible, and yea, he dragged down the shows a bit. In all fairness, he was very green back then, but good GOD, was he horrible.
They havent tried to make the next big announcer because the WWE has already settled with the product they have. Even Paul Heyman said he learned the most sitting next to Jim Ross at commentary. That era is gone. There will never be another Jim Ross. It'll take another person who is a true fan of the business and understand the psychology for there to be another commentator to be like Jim Ross and those are very rare to find.
I remember some PPV when the spirit squad helped Vince beat Shawn Michaels and JR simply said "that's bullshit" I couldn't believe JR would say that on a live mic. helps that it was ppv and not on regular tv.
Jose Reyes it was a case of him freaking out when something wasn't right. Which is what this comment is about. And that was the first time I had heard JR say bullshit on air.
Jose Reyes does every memory of someone have to be their most noteworthy? Why is it a bad thing to have a JR memory that includes jobbers? Your comment makes no sense in any context. I know you are trying to make fun of spirit squad and also sense you being a smark because how could anyone ever mention JR and the spirit squad in the same sentence.
again once flair went in to the story about his hall of fame ring an giving them to his kid who could of shut him up no one an wwe should of like the story cause when he said wwe gave him A new ring it made wwe look good why do they want to look freaking evil.
if you relly think about what they did they wanted jr to interrupt ric flair in the middle of A story about his son dieing that every one like except the evil fascist running the company an cause he did not basicaly say shut up to A sixteen time world champion he got fired.
I live in Montreal and so does Pat Patterson. Seen him walking down Ste. Catherine's a few times. I'll yell out "Hey Pat!!' He smiles and keeps on walking. Took a picture with him once on Crescent Street, Cool guy.

jim ross was the best commentator in history that's why
I choked on my drink that last part "Hogan hey ladies it's not gonna suck itself" lmao
The problem about commentary today is that despite the fact that they've got two former wrestlers on their team, they have three storyline commentators and no wrestling commentators. when he made that Hogan comment at the end, I pretty much lost it for a full minute
Jim Ross is the best at commentary period. Jim Ross, Bobby Heenan, and Gordon Solie are the dream team play by play team.
IMO I think Mauro Rannallo can be the next Good Ol' JR, his work on Smackdown so far has been impeccable, he really does know how to tell a story
I actually think the crappy crowds play a bigger part than the commentary because back in maybe 04 and years before that the crowds would participate and feel something for every character even the mid to lower card characters would get a crowd reaction
LOL@Solomonster at the end. He's right though, the announcing and the fact that WWE/F started as a PG thing. Why can't people understand that?
JBL: Bullying a-hole.
Cole: Sucks.
Jerry Lawler: Doesn't care anymore.
Hell, even Taz sounds good at this point.
IT'S TAZ!!!!!
I totally agree with solomonster!... whoever doesn't, is totally kidding themselves. How many times have I wanted to go to a live event and said "but what about the commentary, I'm going to miss it". ITS NOT GONNA SUCK ITSELF......
BROTHER!!!!
Man if Jim Ross, Bobby Heenan, Gordon Solie and Gorilla Monsoon had the chance to do a Wrestlemania together it would have been a instant classic with there voices alone.
Shame JR isn't there now to put AJ over.
JBL commentating on Justin Hawk matches would be awesome.
Jim Johnston never heard of him before this shit. Your point is soooooo valid he is not given nearly enough credit. The intro music was fuckin EVERYTHING if the intro wasnt fresh no body fucked wit you.
There will never be another Jim Ross I remember the first time I watched wrestling without him I knew this isn't for me anymore
Jim Ross and Jerry Lawler are the best WWE play-by-play men in both the ATTITUDE era and the Ruthless Aggression era (I grew up with the Ruthless Aggression era though).
To quote a childhood hero of mine. JR is the best there is, the best there was, the best there ever will be.
i wish so bad that we had JR back he would singlehandedly fix the whole damn show probably
A video I watch every now and then on RUclips is New Age Outlaws Vs Rock & Austin - Why JR is the best.
my favorite commentary duo will always be The King and Jr
Michael Cole was a commentator during The Attitude Era. This is something people forget he’s been with the company for years.
King and Cole did Commentary from November 1998 To March 1999 and i loved it they did not sound like how they do now
"Take Michael Cole, Jerry Lawler (Today) and JBL. Send them back to 1999."
Nooooooooooo!!!!
Jim Ross is the Gordon Solie of my generation. When he wasn't being antagonized by the King, he was calling a great wrestling match with the proper names of the moves sometimes. I was never a fan of Goldberg but Jim Ross made Goldberg's 3 moves look more impressive just by his commentary and his reactions. I could watch Goldberg with Ross on commentary.
Jim Ross was like Pat Summerall, Keith Jackson, Brent Musburger, Vin Scully, & Verne Lundquist!
I would try and get Joey Styles back on to replace Michael Cole and its time for Jerry to retire. So Joey Styles and JBL would be the team I would use for awhile.

PATTERSON'S & BRISCOES DRAG QUEEN MATCH WAS FUCKING HILARIOUS

That fictional Hulk Hogan quote killed me.
I agree that commentating makes things better... Prime example: Taker vs Michaels at WM26 it was a classic but it was missing something, JR... it would've sounded better...
I cringed when "Kevin Dunn" was mentioned.
What's sad is that, for JR's MANY contributions to the success of WWE, Vince has always hated him, and never passed on an opportunity to degrade and humiliate him. Im sure many fans appreciated him before he left, I was bummed when I found out he was leaving the commentary table
That ending! XD
shit Cole and JBL did better commentary back in 07 on Smackdown thats why im like WTF?
How do I send my question to him Please advise and thank you

They screwed Jim Ross and Joey Styles.
If Ross doesn't come back to wwe then I can't see there ever being an Austin return
Hey ladies. IT'S NOT GONNA SUCK ITSELF!
lol the ending
Those years when Johnny Ace was VPTR were a fucking disaster.
pat patterson is in the hall of fame (1996)
11:52 LOL
God, Cole's "Artificial Excitement" is such a poor emulation of JR's style
Solomonster is not only sexy but funny....
BAH GAWD THIS IS JUST NOT RIGHT!!!! DAMMIT!!!! I loooove when JR thought something was not right.
I remember some PPV when the spirit squad helped Vince beat Shawn Michaels and JR simply said "that's bullshit" I couldn't believe JR would say that on a live mic. helps that it was ppv and not on regular tv.
you recall a jr moment and it has to do with spirt squad?
Jose Reyes it was a case of him freaking out when something wasn't right. Which is what this comment is about. And that was the first time I had heard JR say bullshit on air.

Dave Hobbs really? my comment bothered you so much you had to respond then come back 45min later with a new response lol my comment makes sense to me
again once flair went in to the story about his hall of fame ring an giving them to his kid who could of shut him up no one an wwe should of like the story cause when he said wwe gave him A new ring it made wwe look good why do they want to look freaking evil.
Jim Johnston was using his own music wasn't he?
Yes and I think he's long overdue for a Hall of Fame induction.
if you relly think about what they did they wanted jr to interrupt ric flair in the middle of A story about his son dieing that every one like except the evil fascist running the company an cause he did not basicaly say shut up to A sixteen time world champion he got fired.
There were many if not most times I wished I could have muted Ross and Lawler. Never liked him
why does this guy always answer the dumbest questions he gets asked?
tandemcross cause its his podcast and he can do what he wants with it
