Back in the day! haha Yeah I love it too. It's odd to think this is 35 years ago and 35 years prior 1985 was 1950 the music in the 40s and early 50s compared to the 80s sounds further apart than music from 85 does today I think primarily because of technology. Synthesis hasn't changed that much from the 80s nor has sampling other than better converters and more sampling time. And many current musicians have a trove of vintage synths as well so they are still being used.
You’re right the eighties had a unique and defining sound. This is one of the best videos of the decade. Creative graphics coupled with an outstanding song.

That 80s sound you're talking about is called "synthesizer" , the 80s were full of a new technology called electronic music, and there's no modern music that doesn't use it to some degree, but you don't notice it because its gotten more realistic.
They used hardware back then, the beats were in a way better and just fatter sounding. You just can't reproduce that in quite the same fashion with a computer!

I remember when this song was released. there was a chart show on TV and they aired this video for the first time (that was before MTV was a thing in Germany) I did not know who the band was, so i went to the record shop the next day and told them that I wanted to get a single but have no idea what the bands name was, I only know the video. The assistant looked at me and said: "Let me guess, it is the video half comic half real life. We had people coming to the shop all day long asking for it." They were sold out that day but i got the album a few days later.
A-ha is our biggest and most successful band ever, here in Norway, that also made it really big internationally. And they were HUGE at the time. I was ALL in to them back then. It was freally fun hearing this song again. Takes me straight back to 1985 ( I believe that was the year they came out with this song,If I remember correctly...) Made me feel like a kid again, listening to it now.... Cool! ; )
Such an iconic music video. As an animator myself I'm still fascinated by it. The artist had to draw over every frame of the live video they shot (rotoscoping). I really like when she takes his hand in the beginning and you can she her shadow drawn onto his hand. If you like the song and video there's a 3 party documentary about it here on RUclips.
The year was 1984. The sound of my childhood. You are in the presence of greatness - a song doesn't rack up 1 billion views for no reason. Probably the most famous riff ever created. A Norwegian band, so English not even their first language. Morton (lead singer) and Mags (on keyboard), two of the hottest men in popular music. They both STILL look amazing. The band is touring this year! The very lucky British girl in this video ended up dating Morton for several years afterwards.
Pen Name - ah, I’d say Europes Final Countdown takes the top spot in the Famous keyboard riffs. This is definitely the first runner up though! Although, this could be national bias. Europe is Swedish, and so am I. 😆
If you talk about A-HA. Then their name is Morten, Magne and Pål. The letter å (in Pål) is pronounced the same way as o in LOndon .... and also the same as the o in Morten. So here å=o. Magne has the same pronunciation as in magne(tic). My name is also Magne - but don't call me Mags.
A-Ha have LOADS of brilliant music, (plus they're all incredibly easy on the eye and Morten just. Does. Not. Age!) you should check out some of their other work. Especially Summer Moved On, in which he achieved a record by holding a note for 20.2 seconds.
Thanks to your comment I was curious so looked him up and found the somewhat recent unplugged version of this song… you’re right he doesn’t age! He might even be more handsome!
Yes!! And, I Would Walk 500 Miles by the Proclaimers, which I always associate with Come On Eileen, for some reason m.ruclips.net/video/otXGqU4LBEI/видео.html
Thanks for your reaction to the song! Morten Harket, the lead singer of A-Ha holds two records among male singers, a vocal range up to five octaves and singing one single note for 20,2 seconds (in the song called "Summer Moved On"). You'll be surprised, but the band still exists and has released a lot of albums, like a number of other iconic performers whose roots were back in the 80's...
You haven't heard of them because you are not a child of the 80's. In other words, you're not getting old like me. LOL This was cutting edge tech back in the day. It was super cool to see this video on Friday Night Videos when I was young. This was before MTV was available to me, btw.

+Justin Smyth Take heed in the fact it's more likely just a cultural thing. I'm a 1990 baby and I guarantee most people from my age to even up to 2000 babies have probably heard this song and probably know the name of the band. It's just leaning more on the white racial demographic. That's why I like youtube, all the different cultures and races experiencing each other's music. You're still a young thing Justin Smyth, don't worry about it. We all feel old at some points, that's all it is
I recommend you listen to “Shout”, by Tears for Fears. It’s A great 80s song. You all bring such joy! I am a nurse and after working a long shift it’s nice to see your videos that put a smile on my face:)
I heard this song has gotten at least a billion hits. Can you believe how creative this video was since it came out in the mid 80's. So when you got a song with great vocals, a nice beat and ahead of its time graphics, you got a winner. It reached number one on Billboards top 100 chart back in 1985.
I have a CD title: Millennnium, 80s New Wave Party, which has this song on it. It also has "Come on Eileen" by Dexie's Midnight Runners, an Irish band. The video was filmed in Ireland on the street. It is one of my all time fave videos.

This is why the 80’s is the BEST decade of music and this Video was Showing what the possibilities of video could do. I think this was one of MTV most played videos back then
This video swept the MTV video awards the year it came out. Unprecedented times for music animation. My first year in high school & even my parents loved it! Last scene is homage to the sci-fi film Altered States

This is what was once called a "One Hit Wonder: A group that produced one good song, but filled an entire CD full of songs that you never heard on the radio." There were several of these in the 80s. "Come On Eileen" was one of the most popular of these songs. - BTW, I've really enjoyed re-listening to these songs with your honest/respectful reactions. Thanks!
Alphaville: Forever Young, Scorpions: Wind of Change, Tanita Tikaram: Twist in my Sobriety, Alannah Myles: Black Velvet, Sam Brown: Stop, Billy Idol: Sweet Sixteen, Paul McCartney-Michael Jackson: Say Say Say, Marillion: Kayleigh, Roxy Music: "Jealous Guy" were also big hits back then.
Born in the 70’s and grew up in the eighties and nineties!! Without a doubt the BEST MUSIC EVER!!! It brings back great memories!!! I ABSOLUTELY LOVE TO SEE YOUR REACTIONS!! I could make a list a mile long of great songs!!! Keep it up!!!
True that! Either the music wasnt as good or else they were part of satanic panic overreaction that had them convinced spinning a recods backwards was actually the devil talking. Not to mention the idiocy of Tipper Gore with her war on music. Crazy times.
@@cincocats320 yeah, I remember when Al was running for president and they tried to build her up as a "rock n roll mom", lol! What a joke that was, considering all her PMRC stuff back in the 80s. I remembered, so it was quite insulting for her to be spun like that.
Yes, because starting in the 70s keyboards had synthesizers and suddenly many "musicians" could not even play instruments anymore. All the female vocalists began to sound alike and I did not like most of them. but a major exception was Linda Rondstadt who burst to fame in the 70s. She is still one of my Fave singers.
This is the first video that played on MTV. So refreshing that your listening to this piece of history. I'm a black late 40's female and I absolutely loved this video and this song. #Ilovestrangerthings

Yes, 80s my friend. One of my favorites! It's a great song but there's also an excellent story on the video that you watched. It's kinda hard to follow but by the end of the music video, you'll get it. You should re-watch the video bro and watch the story behind the video. You'll like it. The graphics in this video were groundbreaking and something us oldies back in the 80s, never saw before. This was extremely high tech. I remember coming home from school and watching it on MTV. Everybody was talking about at school lol.......... good times, great memories.
Damn, remember when music videos were creative, inspiring, and told stories. I remember seeing this video on heavy rotation on MTv. It blew my 8 year old mind then and it still blows my mind in 2020. I’ve watched this video hundreds of times and it still gives me the feels, all the feels.
Because they are only 21 and they listened to nothing but rap. I think their parents did not listen to Pop or Rock. They do not even know Black music from the 80s, and nothing about the 70s or before, and this is not as unusual as you think. The only reason my kids know a lot of this music is because I played music all the time from different eras and genres. Think about it, how much music do you know that was popular before you were born? Buddy Holly and Little Richie Valens died when I was just a little girl (mid 50s) and I did not start listening to them until decades later.

Billy idol is awesome be a good one.
Aww that is so cute and cool!
I love this story 🥰
Life waaaaay before the internet 😂 It’s so easy to forget now what simple things like figuring out a band or song name used to be like.
That is such a cool story! Back when you had to talk to people to figure out stuff.
One of the best music videos ever made. Great use of the rotoscoping technique.
‘back in the day’ ...
ugh i’m officially OLD.
😂
Me too!
Yep,we are.
I hear ya! Those were the days my friend
Wendy P., yup. Last year I found myself yelling at the neighbor’s kids to get off my lawn-and I knew then that my youth had slipped away....lol.❤️
Yes,we are... and i hate it....
If you like the song and video there's a 3 party documentary about it here on RUclips.
a billion views.. likely had a lot to do with the amazing artistry, production, creativity of the video..
Try Thomas Dolby "She Blinded Me With Science." I think you will dig it!
It was such a massive hit back in the day, massive.
Still massive
A-Ha have LOADS of brilliant music, (plus they're all incredibly easy on the eye and Morten just. Does. Not. Age!) you should check out some of their other work. Especially Summer Moved On, in which he achieved a record by holding a note for 20.2 seconds.
You're not wrong about their looks. The blue version of this song from a year earlier has Morten in ripped jeans looking just gorgeous.
Thanks to your comment I was curious so looked him up and found the somewhat recent unplugged version of this song… you’re right he doesn’t age! He might even be more handsome!
React to Soft Cell’s Tainted Love from the 80’s
Do the version where it is blended with 'Where did our love Go'?' - Original is great, though this one is even better.
Yes yes, i was thinking tainted love yesterday 😁😁
80s and 90s yeahhhhhhhh, i am 58 (25 in the head these days) lol, neverrrrrrr grow old
Tainted Love was my jam!
Yesssss i been singing that in the last week, surprising how u remember the lyrics after 35 yrs ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Yes definitely a classic from the 80s and they still perform to this day
Yes true, went to see them back in 2016 and they played Take on me and The Sun always shines on TV , plus The living daylights :)
This song came out when I was 14 or 15. Danced to this all the time when it came on MTV. That was back when they still played music videos.
Ahhh....MTV when it meant something 🎶🎵🎼🕶
Back when MTV actually played music!! It really was good times, sigh.
“Hold up... WHO DEEZ PEOPLE?” Dying here bro 💀🤣😂💀
"80's owned sound" What a brilliant way of putting it. I totally agree!
The video was SO far ahead of its time. One of my favorite songs of the 80's and still best videos of all time. Keep up the awesome reactions.
Check out "Come on Eileen" by Dexy's Midnight Runners.
This song slaps
That would be fun, with the rolled up farmer pants, right?
Derek fun song and video.
Yes!
Yes!! And, I Would Walk 500 Miles by the Proclaimers, which I always associate with Come On Eileen, for some reason
m.ruclips.net/video/otXGqU4LBEI/видео.html
That video concept was truly groundbreaking, paired with a timeless classic it will forever be legendary.
Omgosh...... GOLDEN EARRING, “When the bullet hits the bone”... you won’t be able to stop moving!!!
The song title is Twilight Zone.
You haven't heard of them because you are not a child of the 80's. In other words, you're not getting old like me. LOL
This was cutting edge tech back in the day. It was super cool to see this video on Friday Night Videos when I was young. This was before MTV was available to me, btw.
#FACTS and you took me BACK on that Friday Night Videos comment
night flight... hells yes!
YASSS!! OH man! I'm feeling old. Lol
u Talkin The Midnight Special...Friday Nights Wolfman Jack Member Him...YA Saturday Mornin was American Bandstand with Dick Clark HAHAHA u takin me Back Brotha.
We all feel old at some points, that's all it is
My guy said older stuff! 😂 Wow, I really feel old now! 💯 Yeah, the 80s definitely had a defining sound! Now that I look back, I can see that! 😂
Yeah being a 80s kid myself those chords just gives me warm feeling 😊
Time flies
i feel like the best music was in the 70-90's
Lol, 1980 was 40 years ago. It IS old stuff. (I'm a child of the 80's btw)
Take a number on feeling old lmao
One of my all time favourite songs. They are still together and making amazing music. Lead vocals are still beautiful.
I recommend you listen to “Shout”, by Tears for Fears. It’s A great 80s song. You all bring such joy! I am a nurse and after working a long shift it’s nice to see your videos that put a smile on my face:)
That's one of my least favorites by them
It's like I could be your mother/grandmother and we're listening to all of my music together!
@@hooleyqueen It was also a favorite of mine along with BIG COUNTRY and TALK. TALK.
That’s Morten Harket
He’s aged beautifully.
Of course, look what he had going with that DNA.
Ahhhhhh the memories ... the 80’s were the best era 🥰
:(
Swords Chant lol awww 😊
I'm an old guy pushing 60 and I love..LOVE..watching reaction videos to music that was all the thing in MY life back in the 80's. Seeing younger generations watch and GET the music is just.....effing fun. :) Glad you liked it....when it first premiered, we sure as hell liked it too! Thanks for the reaction!
I suggest you listen to "Everybody wants to rule the world" by Tears for Fears
your dance while the end credits was rolling took me STRAIGHT OUT lol
🤣🤣
I grew up during the 1980's and this was really big back then. I still love 80's music
I can remember being a little tiny kid and dancing like crazy around the house. Still do!
All that was hand drawn, btw. Didn't have photo shop.
Such a awesome video!
The first album I ever bought was 'Hunting High and Low', which this is from.
The best album!!
I randomly found a casette copy of that album when I was young and on like a trek with my class. It was just laying there on a stump. It is... just great. He can sing!
Arhhh, Morton Harkett, my heartthrob when I was 12 yrs old in 1986. This song gives me so many nostalgic memories, thanks dude, awesome!
If you talk about A-HA (from my home city - Oslo).... Then the name is Morten Harket.
I am pretty sure I had a pinup from Bop Magazine of him on my wall in 6th Grade.
I'd love to I'd love to see you do a reaction of the Eurythmics 'Sweet Dreams Are Made Of This'. Pretty hot.
They did this one. I Just watched it, thumb through their library
Here Comes The Rain Again is a better song than Sweet Dreams.
they just did and Annie Lennox loved it
If you like Aha, you have to do Tears for Fears - but do Shout, not Everybody wants to Rule the World.
both are good
Everyone always forgets about Head over Heels. Lol
@@dianewilmot581 I don't! The film clip was set in a library...and I'm a librarian! 😉
Emma Bruty - Nice!!
Yes... Shout is better by far.
I'm absolutely in love with how open minded you and your brother are. You can learn and feel so much from music. Love your reaction videos! Especially to older music. I grew up on 70s-90s so a lot of your reactions to classics make me extremely happy to see a new generation have such appreciation for them.
When someone refers to the 80s as “back in the day” sigh.....
Dance clubs and poppers. Those were the days.
Yep. I felt old as dirt when he said that. Hearing my teen years referred to as "back in the day"... Ouch, man. Ouch! :)
I literally just thought to myself that the 80s was 20 years ago and then I realized it ain't the 2000s no more, wtf 😂😭
I grew up in the 80s and say it myself lol
Yep...
Listen to heart of glass from blondie..awesome song
Have you listened to anything from "The Cars"? "Just What I Needed" or "Drive"
Please review “Running up that hill” by Kate Bush.
Tim: “I just love the 80s vibe…80s was a good era back in the day, I know it had to be.”
52-year-old me: “Yeah. Pretty much.”
I love this video!!!!!!!!!😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍
The song is great and the video drawing, artwork and romantic story is even better! Don't close your eyes!!!!!🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
I only learned recently that this band had a Bond song. And they still play.
I've loved this song since it came out...MTV!
he never mentioned the amazing video - one of the greatest of all time
Have you ever seen the sequel video? It’s called “The Sun Always Shines on TV”
I like your channel I grew up in the 80s and it had the best music feel good music I like to see the younger generation appreciate the old school music my son is 19 and he loves the 80s music he listens to it more than the music nowadays keep listening you will love it all try simple minds dont forget about me classic 80s
We had so much great music in the 80s and no one told us we had to stick with one type of music. We listened to it all!!!
@Plano...we were blessed growing up in the 80's with so much good music from every genre.
This reminds me of Yearbook class in high school. I played this song when I was developing photos in the dark room. Great memories!
Listen to their unplugged session of this... It's beautiful and they all still have it
Yo .. def do more eighties. Gotta do... Duran Duran ... hungry like the wolf
Wild Boys!
Girls on Film or Rio
Yes !!! This
Yes he does I moved to America when this came out definitely a soundtrack to my life.
Loved Duran Duran - pop, but with a moody edge. Pure pop is too much sugar for me.
Love him doing the sprinkler. Lol
Do the Dream Academy's "Life in a Northern Town."
Older brother had this one and played it all the time. It has stuck with me over the years.
That is one beautiful tune
Sun always shines was their follow on hit! They still tour now and are utterly amazing live! Thank god for the 80s and a-ha they are the sound track of my life!
Thanks!
The 80's was the best! My ten year old self thought this was the coolest, and all us girls had a crush on him.
Alphaville: Forever Young, Scorpions: Wind of Change, Tanita Tikaram: Twist in my Sobriety, Alannah Myles: Black Velvet, Sam Brown: Stop, Billy Idol: Sweet Sixteen, Paul McCartney-Michael Jackson: Say Say Say, Marillion: Kayleigh, Roxy Music: "Jealous Guy" were also big hits back then.
Say Say Say!! I totally forgot about that song. Absolutely I vote for this!
The Sun Always Shines On TV
Definitely.
I always said that was "Part 2" of the video
I was weak when the beat came back at the end buddy couldnt even help but dance lmaooo
Recomending:
Heart - Alone
Roxette - Listen to your heart
Any Heart song, really
They did Barracuda
Still really want Crazy On You!
@@viviannichols3582 Little Queen
Alone..... BRILLIANT
This was a great group from my generation (graduated 1985) they were sooo popular then. They came from Norway
Back in the 80's we had our parents telling us that 'modern music' was crap compared to the music that they had growing up
It’s also wild that they did all that animation in that video BY HAND! This song is lighting in and out of the bottle!
This is the first video that played on MTV. So refreshing that your listening to this piece of history. I'm a black late 40's female and I absolutely loved this video and this song. #Ilovestrangerthings
Another one that makes me love your appreciation even more! x
Been a mad fan of A-ha since I was a child, still have a mad crush on Morten Harkett. All there songs are amazing. You should try Sun always shines on TV or Cry Wolf.
I’m 17, I listen to 80s 70s 60s and even 50s. Hearing these all kinds of bands and then listening to my generations crap music, I wish I was around then 😂😂😂😂😂
The way he's moving to the music is exactly how one should move to this song. Love it.
Saw these guys live at Hammersmith Odeon. Thanks for reviving the memory!
This song is an 80s icon. How can you just now be hearing it 30something years later??
Because they are only 21 and they listened to nothing but rap. I think their parents did not listen to Pop or Rock. They do not even know Black music from the 80s, and nothing about the 70s or before, and this is not as unusual as you think. The only reason my kids know a lot of this music is because I played music all the time from different eras and genres. Think about it, how much music do you know that was popular before you were born? Buddy Holly and Little Richie Valens died when I was just a little girl (mid 50s) and I did not start listening to them until decades later.
@@hooleyqueen I grew up listening to 50s and 60s lol. I was the only kid in 3rd grade listening to 80s music (in the early 90s). I guess thats why I'm shocked...
I'm really enjoying watching your reactions to music from my childhood. There's not many young people who are willing to listen to anything outside of their chosen genre of music. This has been refreshing to see.
Watching your reactions is kind of like a time machine I was about your age when this song came out when MTV actually played music... Everything was so different and exciting and pushing boundaries and it's so amazing to see young people like you discovering this music for the 1st time keep it up!
