  • Saffron can cost $3,000 a kilogram, making it the most expensive spice in the world. In Kashmir, growing saffron has been a part of the cultural identity for millennia. But what was once a booming crop for this region, has become a risk. Drought, floods, political conflict, fake saffron in the market, and a faltering government mission to help have left farmers struggling. The newest generations of farmers make a fraction of what their grandparents did off saffron. Many farmers now face a tough question: Do they continue farming the valuable spice? We go to the Indian-administered part of Kashmir to find out what caused this saffron crisis.
