Well done, Arthur. This is fantastic .unbiased. review. Stopping down your aperture helps minimize Chromic aberration. Shooting wide open creates purple fringing. I generally use f7.1 to f11 instead of using F/2.8 to f5.6 to see aberration is still there in my viewfinder. It seems like a good ultra-wide angle lens and I might give it a try.

The deciding factor for me was the weight and size. I have a mirrorless because I don't want to carry that much and the sigma 16mm f/1.4 would be my largest lens which I can't justify given that my use for wide lens is only occasional. So far I was using the set zoom for wide and I didn't use it for anything else. Also note that the pricing in Europe is quite excellent. I paid only about $50 more than I would pay for the manual version.

@@shazirahim9340 Actually I'm liking the Tamron more now LOL. I'm finding myself using the 20mm focal length quite often when ultra wide angle isn't necessary.
I have the Sony 10-18 f4. I always use it at widest, otherwise I use the 16-55 on a different body. This is interesting for the great af mad wide aperture for interior/real estate photos handheld. Since the Tamron overlaps a lot with the 16-55 this could be a great ultra wide solution. I keep the ultra wide on an old Sony a6000 for dedicated use. I may sell the 10-18 and get this instead.
A seal at the mount does not always say its actually sealing. my 24-104 F4 has a rubber seal at the mount but is actually does not touch the cameras mount.
the sigma 16mm is way way sharper. ask yourself " do I really need to shoot that wide? ". then if you plan on shooting astro you'll be shooting on a tripod so the AF is completely useless because you will be pulling focus manually .
If Astro, then neither. Get non but Samyang/Rokinon 14mm F2.8 FF manual (Preferably in Nikon F mount and adapt it to whatever mount you have or desire. But then you would never go wrong with the original Samyang 12mm F2 manual, like the other choices you quoted. This wasn't any emotion-involved opinion, I expressed. This was the most sincere advice you could get from someone who has done it all. Take it or bear with it.
@Montañero Paisa the sigma is way sharper than the samyang but of course the samyang is 12mm. the weight of the sigma is not going to be a problem. any decent tripod (250-300$) can handle that weight. for Astrophotography you want to go as wide as possible and retain quality but unfortunately for sony aps-c the options are limited. the samyang is designed for Astrophotography but unfortunately it is not super sharp. the sigma is wide enough but not perfect for Astro. it is way sharper and offers versatility. you'll be able to use it for regular photography as well. you have to choose between wider and sharper. if I had to pick one strictly for Astrophotography it would be the samyang because if you know how to work the scene you can still add sharpening and texture in post.
@Montañero Paisa well I'm a landscape and street photographer. I don't shoot anything else so I guess I can help. when you go on landscape photography hikes you want to keep yourself as functional and light as possible. I only carry essentials ( tripod, gear, emergency kit, food, clothing layers, tent). I shoot sony full frame so in my case for landscape photography I only use the 16-35mm f2.8 GM , 24-70mm f2.8 GM ,100-400mm f4.5/5.6 GM. if you shoot sony aps-c then I would go with the samyang 12mm f2, sony 18-105mm f4 ( if you can afford it go for the sharper 16-55mm f2.8 G), sony 70-350mm f4.5/5.6 G. if you can only buy 1 lens and you're on a budget then ... for the sony aps-c system the 18-105mm f4 is "the must have". for landscape photography you'll need ND filters and circular polirizers. a CPL, nd8, nd64, nd1000 will be more than enough for 80% of landscape photography. I hope It was helpful.
@Montañero Paisa absolutely not !! with a prime lens you're stuck at that focal length and with a 12mm APS-c lens it's gonna be a nightmare. you will only be able to shoot grand vistas. moreover you shoot on a crop sensor and you have to take that into account. your ability to crop decreases exponentially. landscape photography is about range. unless you're shooting the milky way you need zoom lenses especially if you want to grab compositions from the distance. just imagine this scenario ... you want to shoot a peak covered in mist/fog/clouds but that peak is 2 miles away from you and you're stuck a 12mm and you can't zoom in on that peak to grab that shot. it would be a drag !!! for a sony aps-c sensor I believe that the 16-55mm and the 70-350mm cover all the focal length you need for landscape photography. but since you're on a budget the 18-105mm F4 is the all-around lens that will get the job done. you can buy it second hand for 300$.
I tried the 18mm for my a7c and returned it for the Sony 20mm, the quality just didn’t compare. But I might get the new zv and wanting a light wide lens :) might go for tamron 11-20 though.
Bought the old manual lens used for $181 today. It'll arrive in a couple of days. Looking forward to shooting a bunch of landscapes :) Will upgrade to a the AF version in a couple of years. Used, of course.
Interesting review. Thanks. But gee, i bet it's too much of a choice right now. I have old rokinon 12mm and 18-105 f4, now if you were me, would you rather trade the 18-105 to tamron 17-70 and keep the rokinon, or trade the rokinon 12mm with tamron 11-20, but keep the 18-105? Tough choice.
Tamron 17-70 is way better for photos than 18-105. In terms of sharpness I didn’t noticed difference compared to sigma trio, so way batter than 18-105. If you are making video for most the time: 18-105 has PZ, better in-lens stabilization and 35mm extra range.
I got this on sale for $199... wondering if I should keep it. Main reason I got was for landscape photography but I'm also wondering if a more versatile lens makes more sense. Maybe Sony 18-105 or something similar to that...?
I'm looking for a wide angle - would you recommend this or the Sigma 16mm F1.4? Struggling between a few wider mm and Sigma quality and F1.4.... A video comparison would be amazing!
Arthur, I loved your articulation, voice tone and succinct delivery of this review. You speak with a huge trust factor. Thanks. Heya, I just grabbed the Samyang, for my Sony ZV-E10. I notice the wide angle is different when on photo vs video. It crops in on video. Why is that? Have you suggestions on settings to keep the ultra wide in video mode?
Hey Arthur, do you think this or the Sony 10-18mm would be better for filming fast moving subjects outside? I make videos about sprinting and strength training, and need a wide angle for both the vlog style shots as well as for getting more action in-frame as the kit lens is too narrow for me.
astro photo shots and landscapes , I havent found a reason to change from the manual version samyang 12mm yet... I almost considered the sigma 16mm ... i have - 12mm samyang - 30mm sigma 1.4 - sony 50mm ...considering something else for portrait
Liked & subbed! Thanks for the great content! Can you do a samyang 12mm F2.0 vs Sigma 16mm F 1.4 video? I'm interested for low light in night club pics/vids wondering if the F1.4 vs the F 2.0 will make a bit difference..

I wish Sigma made a 12mm 1.4 to go with their other great lenses.
Yes! I was waiting for this! I recently purchased this but want to know if I made a mistake and should go for the Tamron 11-20m.
Any comparison videos coming for the two above mentioned?
Thanks!
I recently purchased the Tamron 11-20m and thinking it was a mistake and trying to go for Samyang 12mm now. The Tamron is still huge and heavy for vlogging.
@@professionalyoutubecomment7272 wow thanks for the perspective!
The Samyang is a great weight and a nice change from the Tamron 17-70 that I carry around.
I may just keep for a few more days and see how I feel
@@shazirahim9340 Actually I'm liking the Tamron more now LOL. I'm finding myself using the 20mm focal length quite often when ultra wide angle isn't necessary.
@Montañero Paisa yessir I do
I have the Sony 10-18 f4.
Hey there... Did you sell the 10-18mm f4 to get this sammy 12mm? Is it good better. Any regret? Thxs
Thanks, great balanced review.
It comes in a large box so they could put "AF" in larger font.
Thanks, I think instead od AF they should improve chromatic aberration issues.
Ever try zeiss touit series?
Thanks loved it the detailed review..
Comparison with the Samyang 12mm AF and the Tamron 11-20mm please !
Please cover video more with your lense reviews. Thanks
I’m in a tough spot. I want to get a lens like this for real estate, but the new Tamron looks so much better
The Tamron is optically superior without question. If you are making money from real estate photography, Id lean that way.
Is that the 11-20mm ?
@@ArthurR but I also want to wait for the Sony a7iv.... not sure if I want to invest in $800 lenses for the crop sensor 😞
But for low light/astrophotography F/2 is not replaceable.
@@mytube2013 which camera and lens are you using for Astrophotography?
Yooooo I just learned about this lens and instantly bought it but.... I got the Rokinon for half the price. It is 199.99 right now on Amazon 🤯🤯🤯
A seal at the mount does not always say its actually sealing. my 24-104 F4 has a rubber seal at the mount but is actually does not touch the cameras mount.
Thank you for this information.
I bought it and I've listed my sigma 16mm... I enjoy much more this focal length for my use
Thinking about an astro prime lens for my 6600. Samyang 12mm f2 AF or the Sigma 16mm f1.4?
the sigma 16mm is way way sharper. ask yourself " do I really need to shoot that wide? ". then if you plan on shooting astro you'll be shooting on a tripod so the AF is completely useless because you will be pulling focus manually .
Would love a comparison between this and the laowa 9mm
I tried the 18mm for my a7c and returned it for the Sony 20mm, the quality just didn’t compare. But I might get the new zv and wanting a light wide lens :) might go for tamron 11-20 though.
Im envy that you have such money to throw around. Good for you 👍
@@gigihanmandarin I’m hoping to use them to make money too 👍🏻
$199 on Amazon right now! 🙌
i'm curious how this will compare to the Viltrox 13mm f1.4 thats coming out.
That one will be in its own league, competing with many full frame 20 1.8
I’ve also bought samyang 12 AF and it’s nice for video, AF works great. But colors on a6500 looks better on tamron 17-70 than on samyang 12.
I got this on sale for $199... wondering if I should keep it. Main reason I got was for landscape photography but I'm also wondering if a more versatile lens makes more sense. Maybe Sony 18-105 or something similar to that...?
How does this compare to the 16-50 kit lens in terms of photo quality and sharpness?
How’s this lens for interior real estate photos?
is this len good for real estate photography?
Sorry if stupid question - but can this NOT be used at 12mm on a full-frame Sony A7iii?
How about virtual tours? How wide is it compared to the Samyang 8mm 2.8?
I'm looking for a wide angle - would you recommend this or the Sigma 16mm F1.4?
Struggling between a few wider mm and Sigma quality and F1.4.... A video comparison would be amazing!
Arthur, I loved your articulation, voice tone and succinct delivery of this review. You speak with a huge trust factor. Thanks. Heya, I just grabbed the Samyang, for my Sony ZV-E10. I notice the wide angle is different when on photo vs video. It crops in on video. Why is that? Have you suggestions on settings to keep the ultra wide in video mode?
wish samyang make same lens for canon eos M :(
Hey Arthur, do you think this or the Sony 10-18mm would be better for filming fast moving subjects outside? I make videos about sprinting and strength training, and need a wide angle for both the vlog style shots as well as for getting more action in-frame as the kit lens is too narrow for me.
Thank you Arthur :)
astro photo shots and landscapes , I havent found a reason to change from the manual version samyang 12mm yet...
