Toyota has been resting on their reputation for reliability for years, without spending anything on R&D. The Fortuner is an old platform based on the Hilux, which was never designed to be turned into an SUV. Everything is just tacked on as upgrades. The Fortuner was designed originally for the Middle East and North Africa area, then SE Asia as a cheaply designed, rugged people mover, without any thoughts for refinement or ride quality, and that's why it's not sold in Western Europe or North America. Toyota just doesn't invest money in these ancillary markets. The only thing positive about the vehicle is availability of parts and it's agricultural build making it fairly reliable and easy to fix, since most of its mechanical components are shared with the Hilux pickup. Most buyers these days expect more from their vehicles than just being reliable, rough riding agricultural, noisy appliances. Most PPVs have long warranties and parts are readily available anyway, so the "reliability" issue isn't as big a selling point as it once was. When you spend hours every day in a vehicle, it's ride, NVH levels and creature comforts start to matter a lot more than just the reputation for reliability. A Fortuner isn't a Land Cruiser, it's simply a Hilux with a roof and extra seats and a revised rear suspension. Unlike the Everest which was designed from the start to be both a pick up and an SUV, the Fortuner is nowhere near as integrated a platform. Toyota is only investing money in volume selling vehicles for North America, which is also the most profitable, and doesn't have much respect for buyers outside that market. It's also notable that even Toyota's performance division has been cut back and now is mostly focused on cosmetic changed and tweeks to small four and three cylinder engines. Vehicles like the 86 and Supra are co developed with partners like Subaru and BMW because they just don't have the in house expertise anymore. Toyota has become more about making money than innovation, but hopefully that is starting to change with the new Prius, and because they're being outsold by the Koreans and other Japanese makes in the profitable markets. Even Lexus has been lagging behind its luxury competition.

Compare to its price for 2.5m, I think I can get better feature pack cars than this. For 2.5m, there is still no fully digital speedometer (only at the middle for information), adaptive until 30kph, no sunroof, no electric handbrake, and no autohold. I could get those features in cheaper PPV's like the Montero, Terra, Everest, MUX. It is also too expensive at its price for 2.5m with all the feature it has which the Everest has loads more feature than the Fortuner. I guess all the money goes to the engine I guess.
@@tlevans62 I'd rather have cracked pistons and bad injectors than very bad transmissions. If we were to follow your argument, all of these high end ppvs will fail in the long run as they all come with tech I do talk a lot about these tech features because you pay a lot for them. If you dont want tech, you can opt for the lower variants and save money. Also I cant give a car a negative review because it has too much tech unless that tech is somehow not intuitive. On the flipside, i cant praise a car for having too little tech especially if it charges you a lot for that deficiency. That's not how progress works. Lastly the lack of tech was not one of my main criticisms of the fortuner. It actually has more tech than the mux and the terra. My criticisms were mostly about nvh and the rear cargo space
Maybe those who don't like tech should get a horse. A car is a technological invention after all and will ultimately breakdown. A horse, even if it breaks down (read: die) can give you little horses..
All cars wear out, as do all engines, it's usually down to how you maintain them. Also, if you don't want any tech then buy a tractor, or a lower end variant of a PPV with better ride, handling and NVH levels. If all you're after is some agricultural truck based conveyance that won't break down, buy an old truck from the 1960s with a carburetor and magneto type ignition system, leaf springs all around and drum brakes. When you spend over 1.5 million pesos you expect to be getting something that's both reliable and comfortable to drive.
