- A suspenseful look at the lengths people will go to gain freedom, Beyond Utopia follows various individuals as they attempt to flee North Korea, one of the most oppressive places on Earth, a land they grew up believing was a paradise. At the film’s core are a mother desperate to reunite with the child she was forced to leave behind; a family of five - including small children and an elderly grandmother - embarking on a treacherous journey across the Yalu River and into the hostile mountains of China; and a man of God on a mission to help these desperate souls. Leaving their homeland is fraught with danger - severe punishment if caught and possibly even execution - as well as potential exploitation by unscrupulous brokers. Family members who remain behind also may face retribution. Yet these individuals are driven to take the risk. Gripping, visceral, and urgent, Madeleine Gavin’s film embeds the viewer with these family members as they attempt their perilous escape, palpably conveying life-or-death stakes. The result is a singular, illuminating, and unforgettable experience.

이 영화는 이 시대 지구상에서 살아가는 의식있는 사람들은 모두 봐서, 이 문명시대에 가축처럼 갇혀 사육되고, 고통당하는 북한민들의 해방을 위해 노력해야 합니다.(The film sees all the conscious people living on Earth in this era, and should strive to free North Koreans who are trapped, bred, and suffered like livestock in this civilized era.)

Well trump has openly expressed his admiration for Kim jong and other despots and has promised he will be a dictator should he gain a second term which is sadly a total possibility..people don't seem to understand the implications of that. We literally could become just like North Korea or Russia

Surely the North Korean regime will collapse under the weight of its continued oppression at some point. But after watching this harrowing film I'm convinced that the people in the country will never rise up against their oppressors. The regime has created a perfect system for control. Complete brain washing through systematic and generational propaganda. Constant poverty and paranoia. And an iron fisted approach to familial shame and punishment. The only thing that bothered me about the film was the knowledge that the main family being helped was subtly being pressured by their Christian backed rescuers to convert. When Pastor Kim prayed with the family he was instructing them to say Amen at the end of his prayer, and I thought: From one form of control to another, but with the promise of freedom and prosperity as the carrot. I would lay odds that the family is now attending a Christian church.
But if you do not believe in God you have no drive to help people at this extent. You will just ignore human misery. The reason they can risk their lives is that they believe there is God.
@@positivedna You are misguided if you think that it takes belief in a god to have a moral purpose. Secular organizations like the Red Cross, Doctors Without Borders, The Peace Corp, World Vision etc, are just a few. The idea that you have to be a Christian to understand compassion is just insulting.
I mean the Christian faith is based on a god that in the Old Testament called for genocides, infanticide, buggery of children, stoning of women, ethnic cleansing, etc etc etc, seems just as bad in my eyes.
