8:20 I am for this too, I've been screaming it from the rooftops for a while.... The people we have in right now are unqualified and ruining the country beyond its repair. It's also a bit hard to see this whole transparency thing working out... They all lie through their teeth, and it's hard to see the truth before it's too late.
@@15DanielsI kind of think ‘all politicians are liars’ is not a helpful position. First of all, everybody lies at some point, yourself included. Secondly, all politicians are not always lying about everything. Thirdly, most politicians are just people who wanted to effect change, and most of them had good intentions at the start, but found out that things are more complicated than they expected, and the occasional lie helped get some useful change put into effect. Fourthly, and most importantly, saying ‘all politicians are liars’ encourages people to dismiss the whole process of representational democracy. It then becomes really easy for a true grifter to come along and say, ‘I tell it like it is,’ ‘I’m an outsider,’ ‘I’m not a liar,’ etc., and get elected by people who dismiss all politics. Like it or not, we are all involved in politics. Dismissing all politicians as liars doesn’t change their effect of political decisions on our lives. Fifthly, you should run for office if you think you can do better. Seriously.
Congrats on the promotion Jebediah Snerling!!! Honestly though happy for you brother, this is well deserved and glad to see the rise from a year ago when i started following you!
I can appreciate not wanting to be labelled politically. Its very polarizing in todays world and the labels don't mean what they used to anyways....I don't even know what they mean anymore. I used to consider myself a fiscal conservative and a social liberal, but I think those parameters have changed so much, who knows....keep up the great work.
For me, it's the opposite side of the coin. I don't think you'll get to have a nuanced opinion again until you quiet the disruptive people who share some of your opinions. I'm a hard lefty. My politics have been blown into iconography for like a decade. Now that the far right is clearly problematic, you gotta learn to speak carefully if you want your ideas to land. It's something I had to do years ago.
I too love this country, even if I didn't do anything to be here. And a huge thing this country needs is to not co-opt American data but actually look at the data and trends our country has which is so often forgotten or equated with whatever is happening in the states. Immigration, refugee, housing, health care are all so different and I'm so glad that you are online and contributing to a canadian data focus :)
Hell yes to an electoral reform video! I've been arguing for years that citizens lack the levers to pull to influence our own government. Electoral reform is the key to that.
Electoral reform (prop-rep). Please talk about this more - it seems to be quite misunderstood and underrated. It would reduce these wild swings back and forth in policy from one administration to the next which is extremely unproductive...plus it would actually mean we have some semblance of a democracy where your vote really does count.
Congratulations on the new job! Really respect your work, so valuable to see you lead by example to inspire civil participation. I feel like it is one of the more effective ways to counter the sensationalism and learned helplessness that seems to permeate everything these days. Thank you for your fight against that darkness. And very interested in the electoral reform video.
very happy for you, excited to see new videos from you and with that rental listing company, im using them now to find a new apartment they seem solid.
I was thinking about subscribing based on a couple of your other videos, but I wanted more information about you and this video sealed the deal for me.
21:06, the allure of the US is always present in the mind of young Canadians, my brother actually recently moved there. It's remarkable how much more dynamic the job market is down there. He definitely likes being paid in the mighty US dollar, consumer choice is much better, opportunities are greater. There's really no getting around this. But, as he and I think most of us who've been to or know people who live in the US, it's a country where when the times are good, they're REALLY good, but when they're bad, they're REALLY bad.
As an American, I don't really get what you mean by the bad times. There are local areas here in the US where specific causes create temporary bad times, and on occasion, the Federal Government goes out of their way to make life harder but that usually doesn't last long. Overall, I'd say that our pendulum swings are less drastic than those in Canada. Our news outlets may make it seem otherwise but that's because sensation is profitable. Real statistics paint a much more mundane picture of American life. And as with any nation around the world, stay out of city centers. Densely populated areas create an unnatural environment with predictably poor results.
@@marckiefer4708 I totally agree with you, life ins't what you see on the news. And most of my relatives live in the US and have so for decades. There are pros and cons, not trying to just shit on the US. I'm referring to the personal level and I'll actually touch upon what you said, re "city centers." While, for example, there is obvious crime in cities like Toronto, Vancouver, or Montreal, it's incomparable to any given US city. Our most dangerous cities, in terms of crime and violence, are akin to your safest large cities. It's just one of those things people don't think about when they "compare economies."
Also if you develop a longterm illness down there, well, good luck! Canadian Healthcare has serious issues and yet the US makes it look positively rosy.
I'm delighted by you - I thought you worked in construction before though, and that kind of informed how much you had access to, so I think it's cool you're gonna have even more!
Thanks for your commentary. Thoughtful and helpful. Yes to a video on electoral reform. Also, very interested in why Canada seems always rated low on productivity. Your comments on us generally being risk averse, putting money into housing rather than enterprises gives me some understanding. Seems to me, we have a national trait that's "safety seeking". My ancestors came here in the 1800s seeking a safe place to live given the ravages of European famine and worker exploitation in the industrial revolution. This is much like the asylum seekers arriving here today. Risk-loving entrepreneurial types head south of the border. Your thoughts? Is that worth a video? Maybe us Canadians just want to be con managers.
Another great video. Thank you for taking the time. Love it. Speaking of investment, GDP and business machinery/productivity in Canada I'm curious if you will get a chance to look into the commercial industrial real estate side on the westcoast as they too have seen incredible lease renewal rates increases of over triple since covid. Many smaller businesses have not been able to absorb these dramatically increased lease rates from auto repair shops to bakeries and retail, to mid sized business that manufacture closing instead of absorbing these much higher leasing costs. With the commercial occupancy rates being so high, warehousing firms are the ones that mostly gobble up these spaces as they become available. I think these lease rates have softened a little in the last two years but they are still almost double what they were coming into Covid. At the end of the day if manufacturing can't afford to lease space, they and their jobs are being displaced by warehousing. I wonder if the GTO is feeling the same on the industrial side?
You talked about running the numbers to determine if buying a house is right for you. Can you sometime do a video on how one does that, identifying the factors, and overall how to make that decision?
Would love to see an electoral reform video. We have 338 MPs yet it seems only a few actually matter, the rest are puppets to the Prime Minister and Prime Minister's office agenda. I always thought it was ridiculous that party leaders get to sign off on candidates meaning essentially they have a veto on any candidate they do not like, it also does not help that their own caucus cannot vote a leader out. I feel like before we see reform we need a reevaluation of what it means to be a parliamentary democracy, we need to reimplement the founding principles of the country like responsible government, as party discipline largely dictates our parliamentary dealings and these MPs that are supposed to represent the will of their constituency and hold the government to account instead are avid shills for whoever is in charge. But I would be curious to see what your thoughts are on the overall topic.
Ole Jeb Snerling at it again. I hope this video gets a decent amount of views cuz the first three mins of jokes are gold. ~do your thing algorithm daddy~
I was wondering if you had ever read Garth Turner, and there's the answer. I used to follow him quite closely; probably a good time to start reading his blog again.
Be careful recommending the 4% rule. Ben Felix has some good content about how the time horizon can affect that, and how a more conservative percentage should be used to fight sequence of returns risk. Also congrats on leaving engineering!
Yeah personally if I was very determined to never work again, I'd go more in the 3-3.5% range, or go with 4% but make a little side income from something I enjoy doing. This was just to give a broad idea.
About the government not having a tool to enforce departures -- does having a valid SIN through a work permit not be a method? You can obviously work for cash under the table but taxes, utilities et al. Do you see that happening at a larger scale, similar to how it's happening in the US with DACA etc?
12:35 - the high commission model for originations is a major factor. Mortgage Brokers/agents are self deluded into considering themselves to be investment advisors instead of their actual responsibility of practicing prudent credit administration. The low barrier to entry, and terrible over-site by market participants and regulators (likely b/c they personally bought into the delusion that residential homes are “investments” so breaking sound rules is okay) have all swirled together into the mess we see today. We ‘re months (not years) away from one of the most epic reversions to the mean in our history. Fundamentals like income will force this correction, and a 40% decrease in real prices is the best case for those who “invested” imprudently into residential RE.
Don't simply retire from something; have something to retire to. Start saving, keep saving, and stick to investments. Everyone should have BTC in their portfolio.
It’s really heartbreaking to see how inflation and recession impact low-income families. The cost of living keeps rising, and many struggle just to meet basic needs, let alone save or invest. It’s a reminder of the importance of finding ways to create financial opportunities. You've helped me a lot sir Robert! Imagine i invested $50,000 and received $190,500 after 14 days
Some persons think inves'tin is all about buying stocks; I think going into the stock market without a good experience is a big risk, that's why I'm lucky to have seen someone like mr Robert L Cox.
I did the pseudo-equivalent of renting and investing instead of buying, and it worked pretty well for me at the time... but yeah, selling a house is complicated and expensive, watching the past decade play out is why I usually tell people not to take drastic action, especially not to time the market.
