    amzn.to/43NMgxl Boogie Brew Compost Tea (3lbs Makes 50 gallon of Tea)
    In this video I demonstrate how to care for watermelon plants during the Grow Season. One Game Changer tip is to prune the vines of the plant. This means to take the suckers off the vine. The sucker is a secondary vine that branches off from the main vine. When there are more that one watermelon on a vine it's best to prune one melon off. This will cause the plant to place more energy into the watermelon that is left on the vine. Increasing the side of the watermelon is the side effect of pruning. Fertilizing throughout the growing season is also a critical element in producing a giant. I use compost as well as compost tea. The tea stretches a long way. This is an organic fertilizer that can be applied as much as the grower desires. The plant will not burn because of the tea. Checking the leaves for bugs will help identify problems. Bugs can suck the sap out of the plants causing major problems if not dealt with. Remember to water the plants at the base because by doing so decreases the chance of diseases. Fungus on the plant may stop the production of the fruit. When harvesting the watermelons make sure the tendrils are dried out and cut back on watering to insure the watermelons are sweet. Lastly using mulch will help you with watering. The chances of irregular watering decreases.

      @@GrowSomethingTasty we don’t have experience doing it in hidden patches… we want to plant caches everywhere around our city… LIKE a community garden but just in the neglected areas of our city… my husband is a land surveyor that knows a lot of abandoned land.
      We want to do this to give more to the people in need. The community gardens suck here and people are more takers than caretakers of the plants. Is there an email I could send u when we start transplanting?

    Cutting off the small watermelon does reroute energy back into the remaining watermelon, but you could have left the leaves, because not only do they not take energy away from the fruit, but they actually add more energy through photosynthesis.

    I would suggest getting a jump on cutting suckers and extra fruit as soon as you can because if you let them go too long, it'll be a spaghetti bowl of vines and it's a pain in the ass to try and trace the main stem to cut suckers etc. Next year I'll have to stay on top of it. You might try to mulch your plants. I would mulch some and not mulch some to see if it makes a difference. I can get away with not watering for a long time. I am trying to grow watermelons for the 2023 gardening season. Last year I got vines but know watermelon. I found you during my search on how to achieve this. Yes, I would have thought to keep the small one on the vine without cutting it thinking I would have more. So that was a good tip. My question is how to get it to grow a watermelon from the flower? I had flowers but it never grew a watermelon. I was thinking I needed to perhaps have pollinating flowers around in order for the bees to come and pollinate the flower of the watermelon (which I plan to do). I would love to see how you make your compost tea. Thanks for the tips.

    • @GrowSomethingTasty
      @GrowSomethingTasty  Год назад +3

      HELLO RB the Garden Nanny, you answered your own question. You should plant flowers to bring the bees to pollinate the flowers. If you don' see any bees you can hand pollinate the flowers by picking the male flower and rub it inside the female flower. I'll do a compost tea video for you. I will check to see if I have a video on that (I might not have one). Thank viewing and leaving a comment. You will get some watermelons this year!!! Take Care, RB

      @@GrowSomethingTastythanks so much. I've been researching and the pollination part is where I have been going wrong. I just plant it and forget it. Even though my garden is full of flowers I guess it's not close enough to the watermelon. Yes, I think I will do both. I'm determined this year. I do have a compost tumbler and at the bottom the juices run down in the bottom and collect there. That's the only compost tea that I get but I would love to know how to make it other than just that. Thanks again for replying.

    My grandfather always grew a huge patch of very large watermelons in the 1970s. I remember them talking about some of them growing to 75 pounds. My mom loved the yellow meated watermelons and the good thing about those is they were almost always sweet long before official picking time. I`d get up early in the mornings while the melons were still chilled by the cool nighttime air and eat some smaller ones right in the field. I should have bought seeds for that type this year. I have some Sugar Baby seeds so I guess I`ll just try those.
    I need to start a couple of rows of pole beans and some various cucumbers I`ve never tried and pick a good spot for a few types of heirloom corn seeds that came in a variety pack, plus I have a lot of weird seeds I`ve never tried before like Sorghum, buckwheat, lentils, and more. Trying new things and hoping to get some high quality food cheap.
    I have Clemson Spineless okra, bush snap beans, yellow squash, radishes, Sugar Snap Peas, and some Spacemaster cucumbers planted right now, and later today I`m doing a row of Red Burgundy and Jambalaya okra and planting the few Mississippi Purple Hull peas I have to get more seeds.
    I planted some Sun Choke tubers around here for a future emergency food supply and got a Brown Turkey Fig tree planted last month plus I tossed some Amaranth seeds around and planted Jicama and Moringa tree seeds. I`m waiting on some soil for some planters I just got to put some Tiny Tim cherry tomatoes in and more radishes.

Do you have problems with my enemy, the squash bug? I hope all your seeds and plants do well.

      @@GrowSomethingTasty Vine borers are the ones I hate. Gonna try again this year to grow squash and wrap foil around their stems. We have bad infestations of squash bugs too. They gave my cucumbers a disease one year. There were hundreds all over the vines. Japanese beetles are terrible here too. They eat my greens at night. Even in Winter because I think they live in the soil to stay unfrozen.

      I would recommend getting Jerusalem Artichokes to make an all natural pesticide. Check out the channel Garden Like A Viking to see the process of brewing the concentration for use. You can also grow and eat them. There's 2 other plants that are also basically a universal repellant but I think the artichokes will be best for the US and what you'll prefer. Some herbs may be helpful as well but I'm not sure how they compete and might affect the growth of watermelons. (mint, thyme, basil, etc). Marigolds are also a pretty good repellant for many types of insects.

    Are these italian watermelon varieties or if not then have you ever grown varieties like Anguria Crimson sweet and Anguria charleston gray watermelon varieties from Franchi italian seeds company.? Which seeds company you find the best overall.? Plus tell me the procedure of growing watermelon in home’s lawn is same as professional growers do or pruning is not required then.? I am growing cucumber, melons and egg plants in the same soil side by side with watermelons in my home. Is this a good practice to do

    • @GrowSomethingTasty
      @GrowSomethingTasty  5 месяцев назад +1

      I know they are Crimson Sweets. I don't know where they came from originally. I used Baker Creek Seeds for the 1st time this year. They have a large selection. I normally get seeds from my local store like today. It's not a requirement to prune your melons. I have grown big ones without doing it in the past. It does help, especially if you have a hard time getting big ones. I'm not a commercial grower, so I can prune with ease. I don't grow hundreds of melons. I grow cucumbers in my yard also. They are not side by side, though. A subscriber said she planted them side by side, and her melons tasted like cucumbers. She said it was awful. I have not experienced that yet and hope not to ever. She is going to separate them this year. If you can separate those 2 crops, it might be better based on her experience. I am thinking she saved seeds for the previous season, and that's how she had the melon that tasted like a cucumber. Thanks for your questions

      Hey Brother Lee, thanks. Hey, I would leave 2 melons per plant on different vines if you trying to get them big as possible. If you grow a lot of plants, you can try to have just one on. You can also make compost tea and use that to water the plants. You don't have to do that but if your soil is not the best I would. Also buy watermelon seeds that grow to be a decent sized. I'm going to by the Carolina Cross melons to see how big I can get one of those.

I can't wait for the season. Take care if you have any questions during the season I'm here. I'll help if I can, later.

    Good advice I live in Canada and have been experimenting our season is hot and humid but short we have great luck with tomato’s and we trim them for extra energy and I’ll do the same with my wmelon it makes sense but I have a hard time pruning vines that have blossoms but by the end of sept it’s touch and go Oct can be still warm but less sunlight and it could snow or freeze

    I had a laugh when you put the basketball next to the melon, and then immediately thought.......challenge accepted.
    Start of summer here, my watermelon (First time melon grower here) plant is about the size of a very small plate at the moment, growing very slowly, but we've had no hot weather yet, we'll see.

      HELLO Reggie, welcome to the channel. Thanks for watching and subscribing. I appreciate it. I want to know how your first year goes. Since your seeds did not germinate next time, try soaking them in water for 3 hrs and see if that helps. The seeds could have been a bad batch.
