Thank you, Trina! I really like the dark papers too. Now I just have to figure out how I'm going to use them. Thanks for always being so encouraging. 🥰
I love your experiments! So what if there were fails, that's how we learn. Some of these papers are stunning! Buffy Kaufman is a watercolor artist who in her earlier videos did this on watercolor paper, then painted over it. I think she called it paper marbling. It seems that absorbent papers work better because the ink sinks in, versus sliding off. Thanks so much for this!
I love your intro to your Suminagashi adventure 😍! So different from other YT artists and charismatic! One feels invited and involved from the very start! And your experiment with the beautiful stencil was my personal highlight ... such a mesmerizing result! Aloha from Berlin ❤🧡💛💚💜
Thank you, Queen - that means so much to me - I really do hope that everyone who watches feels like they are right there with me. I loved the stencil too and have been thinking of things to try to create more clarity with it (mad scientist at work). 🥰
I play with Suminagashi in my studio. I first experimented at Art Camp teaching 8 to 11 year olds. I did some research and bought Carrageenan on Amazon and we used paints at camp which didn't work as well as only but kids had a great time. Water st as yes pretty clean as paints didn't sink. I have red two gallons of the carrageenan water I reuse all the time. Love your videos
Thank you, Heather - I bet the kids had a blast! So you can reuse the carrageenan water? And what proportion of C to water do you mix? I'd love to try it.
What a great video Jackie, thank you for this latest experiment 🙏🏻 ‘Suminagashi’, even the word is beautiful as well as the results, rolls of the tongue much better than ‘ink floating on water’. I have many different colour fountain pen inks and may experiment with them. Inspiring as ever, thank you 🙏🏻 🤗🙏🏻
You are a MAD SCIENTIST, Jackie!! This was so fascinating to watch and learn from! Thanks for the mention about the exam table paper, so sorry it was not a good fit for this process! But I'm glad you tried the wet strength tissue and it worked great! I can't wait to try some of these techniques here, too! Perhaps today I will try some if I can find the time : ))) As always, thank you for your generosity of spirit and talent! What a perfect way to start my Saturday afternoon!! xoxoxoxox Deanna
Thanks Jackie! I have painted some very beautiful papers using it recently. The rolls I bought are 21' wide, I believe bigger than the one you used in the video? Not that it matters one iota ; ))) Have fun!! xoxoxo@@PaintedPaperStudio
Hi Jackie! That was awesome! About a year ago I watched a suminagashi master create something gorgeous and I thought, "... someday I might try that...", but of course I never did because it looked too technical or complicated or intimidating. BUT, now that you just did it for us and made it look so fun and playful, I'm definitely going to get some ink and convert my Pyrex 9x13 into a sumibath! can't wait to try it, thank you so much for all the inspiration! 🌃🌟🎇♥
It really is a fun and magical process, but one note; do not fill the pyrex up to the top. I had a big spill during cleanup 😂 Archie was not impressed with the language that came out of my mouth 🤣
Fabulous experimentation, I have to take your lead on the note book, last week I was fooling around with ideas, made a couple of fabulous papers, this week I’m scratching my head as to which weird thing it was that produced those out comes😆
Isn't it the worst?! There is a piece I did 10 years ago that I L.O.V.E! I want to share it with you all but cannot remember the process at all - I wish I had been keeping a studio journal back then. * sigh * Thank you so much for watching, Gay! 🥰
Lovely to see you experimenting with this. I came across it when I lived in Japan in the late 1990s and I too had a lot of fun trying different techniques with the sumi and mixing in other inks, mostly using thin Japanese papers. I think khadi paper would probably work well. Sadly I think I only have a couple of pieces tucked away in a box somewhere. You've inspired me to give it another go - if I can find space for and cope with all the wet paper! Thanks for sharing!
You're right Diana, dealing with the wet paper issue takes some planning. I think in the future I may do it outside where I can lay down a large tarp and let them dry right there. I had never heard of Khadi paper, so I just went down a delightful rabbit hole learning about it. On one of the sites I saw a khadi paper sketchbook that made me swoon 🥰
I tried this and had the same issue with the ink sinking, both in regular water and in distilled water. But it got a little better when I used a super light touch with the ink. Tried a lot of papers and got the best print with a non-paper substrate called Evolon. Clear and beautiful. Thanks.
Geri - this is exciting! I've never heard of Evolon before, but just found some on a book binding site. I'm going to order some and give it a go. Thank you very much for the recommendation! 🥰
Beautiful!!! I love the zebra pattern it creates. It would be so nice in an African theme collage. Thank you for sharing. You have given me so many great ideas!!!!
Jackie, this was so cool to watch the results you had with the inks and papers. Thanks for sharing. I always learn something from you and you always present activities that are super fun. Thanks again for sharing. Yes, I liked watching you experiment. 😍😍😍
Catherine - thank you so much! I was just telling a family member how nervous I get when I release a new video. I'm already starting to think of other things I can experiment with 😍
It might work well on cotton, Patricia. The video I watched suggested cotton paper, so I’m guessing it will work on cloth too. Be sure to let me know if you try it. 🥰
You made me laugh with the rice paper! I had a similar experiment with coffee dyeing it! I can coffee dye pretty much everything but rice paper was a disaster! Even once gelli printed! Loved that suminagashi experience!
They day after the rice paper "incident" I bought a different strength of rice paper to test it out. The type that I have now is awesome for collage, but it's too thin for anything even slightly wet. What is four favorite paper to coffee dye on?🥰
Printer paper, music sheet, school paper ( ruled and millimetric) and this roll of paper for kids from Ikea - it's really cheap but the texture is absolutely amazing!!!
I've heard that the roll paper from Ikea was good - I'll have to try to remember the next time I find myself wandering through thstore 😍@@The_artistic_yogi
Keep the experiments coming! Love the good, the bad and the ugly! Although everything has a use somewhere in our art!
I loved the moment you discovered Jackienagashi with alkohol and soapy drops. That was amazing! You´re a grand surprisor, Jackie 🥰
"Jackienagashi" - that is one for the books, Britta 😂 I love it!
@@PaintedPaperStudio So do I! 👍❤️
YES! Experiment videos.
Thanks Geri -more coming, pinky promise 🥰
What a fun experiment! My favorites were the stencil and super dark papers. Love watching you experiment! 😍
Thank you, Trina! I really like the dark papers too. Now I just have to figure out how I'm going to use them. Thanks for always being so encouraging. 🥰
WOW! How interesting. Certainly adds another technique to the bag. Love it,
It was really fun Julie, and next time I do it I think I'll do it outside - water everywhere during clean up 😂
I love your experiments! So what if there were fails, that's how we learn. Some of these papers are stunning!

Thank you very much, Yolanda! 🥰
This is AMAZING!!! I have to try this!! What beautiful papers you've made! TFS!

Thank you, Barbara - I insist that you try it 😍
I love this technique and it's so cool sharing all the process with you !! Thank you so much 💝
Thank you, Evelyne - I love not knowing what will happen - it's part of the magic 🥰

Super fun and interesting ❤❤❤

Hi Jackie! Fun stuff! I used to do Suminigashi with Dr. PH Martin’s inks. Wonderful range of colors and. Pretty easy to work with.
Hi Candace! I was wondering if the acrylic inks would work this way - great to know 😍
Great experimentation, thanks for sharing with us
You're welcome, Sigrun - thank you for watching. 🥰

So true, Susan - it's the discovery that I love. Sometimes it give me the goose bumps! 😂🥰

Hi Jacqueline - I love Catherine Rains - she is always doing such fun things! 🥰
Catherine is a wonderful artist that You should check out.
I’ve wanted to try that for a long time! I might need sacrifice my baklava pan😂
