    Matt,
This is fascinating, thanks for taking the time to do this video. As someone who knows his part of the world well i think you put your finger of the nub of a good few aspects.
What I liked most was your illumination of a blend of technical linguistic aspects with a sense of the spirit of the man.
    All the best,
    RG

Nice to see an audiobook narrator who appreciates classically trained actors like Richard Burton. I wish more modern narrators "Made music of simple speech" the way Burton did. Keep up the great work!

Why thank you! It's a tricky balance for a narrator. My job is to sound good and polished so that the words go down easy in the listener's ears *and yet* not get so precious about the sound of my voice that the story gets left behind.

For some obscure reason, I've spent the last few days duplicating the Burton venom. Yesss! Thet's iT! VEnnom! rrrRaging at something or other. SpiTTTING it OUT! UGH! ARGH! YeSSS!
Well observed, my good fellow. Keep it up.

You know, most of what I remember him for is his epically understated performance in 1984. There is that *one* moment though when Winston is about to give in, you see that glint of mad-dog in his eyes and his breathing.

@@narratormatt A madman, for sure, but in that certain way that only Englishmen (ahem) may be mad...
Actually, I specialize in Northern Ireland accents, specifically from Down and South Antrim. Although I've never been there, and through unusual circumstances, have no accent of my own. Accents are my thing, and your video reminds me of why that is.

Tell me more about this particular poem as the one of choice: Did Burton do it at some point? I'm not seeing anything on youtube with him doing that.

Would you do the same thing for the British commentator Christopher Hitchens?

I don't think Richard Burton sounded quite so nasally

I'm never going to be this meticulous.

Well, practice makes meticulousness sink away into reflex. Sort of like learning to drive a car: With practice all those moves and things to be alert to... they just become the baseline from which you can operate with more ease.

Too nasal. Should have sung "Lucky Man" by ELP. Try it.
