A big reason for the scion's presence is entirely pragmatic: Allies for Duty Support/Trust. Now that the devs are offering an entirely single player experience for MSQ, they need an active cast with enough characters to accommodate a 4 person party with the player as any of the three roles.
Alphinaud and Alisae are straight up just warm bodies being lugged around by the narrative in case they're needed, be it as healers or DPS for the dungeons, or as extras and stagehands in Wuk Lamat, Krile, and Erenville's story.

To your Scion and G'raha points. They *might* be more expensive given their reputation now. But the translation is across multiple languages. For example many of the Japanese VA's were famous for their work well before they started FFXIV. Yoshi-P is a well proven producer at this point, so I'm sure he considers these kinds of costs. I'm just not sure that's going to be a large part of why the Scions tag along without much of a part to play early on.

That comment about Yoshi p talking about how they will pick up on what people like and move in that direction was comforting to hear, until realizing my actual problems with the story was less about the subjects of focus and more about the actual writing and pacing itself. "And yes, the VA is fine" I diagree. The voice actor for Wuk does not know how to shout or how to properly convey anger, despair or rage, which is unfit for portraying a character who is a warrior. If there is any tension, the voice actor does just normal talking voice with slightly elevated volume, if at all. Her "Nooooo!" during the reveal of who her father is is so pathetic, it sounds more like she was annoyed than being shocked or afraid of losing her father. If there is a character far away, Wuk's voice actor does not shout as if shouting across the room, it's just normal pleasant talking voice. When it's just about rainbow happy feelings the VA is ok, but if it comes to most serious situations - No!

I think you may have a point about the VAs cost cutting measures. While the English VAs are beloved and been a part of FF14 since HW for most of us, I guess they'd have to pay that amount x the number of local translations so wouldn't be surprised if they are trying to cut back on those or get new VA to do the heavy lifting. While Wut Lumat does do a passable job of being an okay character at the start, I think main issues I personally had with them comes much later. I think the core strength of FF14 is that there is time to improve characters. Like most people I hated Alphi and Tataru going into HW but now consider them top tier characters, sadly if I had to rank Wut at the end of this expansion they would be in the lowest tier or I might have to create a new one just for them.

I think it makes a lot of sense to have the Scions step back early on and I do think they almost justify them coming along for Duty Support, although they do certainly add quite a bit in their mentor roles despite not being as prominent at the outset. With G'raha specifically, they've talked in the past about how Jonathan Bailey was eager to come in after-hours to record for EW even though he was working on Bridgerton. However, the character is basically at the forefront of the last two expansions and it feels right for him to step back briefly, while also allowing him to give Krile the chance to step away from the Students to pursue her own character development.
Interestingly I spoke with localisation lead Kate Cwynar about this and she said she was actually surprised that so many existing characters were coming along in Dawntrail and that she had initially wanted there to be fewer existing characters. It's nice to have a little familiarity, however, so I'm glad we brought the twins along even if they're a little less prominent so far.

Yeah anyone talking about that is a mouth breather that is ignoring actual real writing issues that have taken the state of FFXIV and kicked it backwards in time. If the writing was solid and more thought out, everything else would have been fine. Even the people who take issue, myself included, with the delivery of some lines by Wuk where she has to be more aggressive or commanding sounding.. it would have been fine had scenes be WRITTEN differently to avoid highlighting VA weaknesses. Because there are many other moments where she shines.
I was really looking forward to these writers being that of the Dwarf/Pixie quests and Sorrows of Werylt, but it seems they only really excel in smaller straight forward stories. I'd want to give them a chance to grow as writers, but NOT at the detriment of a whole expansion. Dawntrail ends up feeling like a saturday morning cheap shonen anime purely focused on Wuk Lamat. I have no problem not being the center of attention, but she seriously gets 80% of screentime. Way too oversaturated.

Alphi's VA mentioned somewhere that they are often not shown scenes from the game to which they can react to in the moment when voice acting. It could be that there are multiple teams dealing with different VAs, in which case there could be a discrepancy in how certain scenes are being described by the directors. The thing with Wuk Lamat is she is a sheltered princess who never really needed to grow up. She knew of the other cultures only through the stories about her father's trials and celebrated the Hanu-Hanu's festival once when she was a young child. So she is essentially a child seeing the real world for the first time (like a sheltered kid leaving their parents for the first time when they go to Uni) and is growing up as she learns the reality of the rest of Tural. The constant vomiting thing was kind of annoying, but beyond that she is better than Lyse was in StB, as she does not have the experience that Lyse did. As for it mostly being world building and defining the cultures of Tural over much action, I am more than fine with it. I am an Archaeologist/Anthropologist IRL with a PhD in the subject, learning about new cultures and the intricacies of how they operate their day-to-day lives are right up my alley.

As someone, who liked the tonberries and Wanderer's Palace dungeon... its surprising you didnt remember the Mamool Ja, that have taken controll over the palace when you go there in hard mode - you even meet your first two-headed mamool ja...
17:00 --- Wrong. When you're a tourist going to a festival... you get nothing of the culture. You can pretend to learn but you barely scratch the surface. Also, Wuk Lamat is the princess of this nation and in the company of her father, what she gets to see it not only just said surface but people wont just approach her. They wont greet her in their costum way, they greet her in her way, after all, they dont want to make her feel out of place or anything. When you visit another country, unless you live there, you dont know it. Period. So Wuk Lamat not knowing the various costums of her future subjects doesnt strike me as odd. It would've surprised me if she had known.
26:55 --- I noticed that, too, the lack of voiced cutscenes. There were many instances where the characters would discuss important point relevant to the story without being voiced...
I had to think about Lyse, too, when seeing Wuk Lamat. They fulfull the same role: being the center character of the story (hell, Lyse featured on the SB logo!) with the WoL and by extension the Scions taking a back seat. I have taken my sweet time with MSQ, I just finished yesterday. I did all side quests and some fates, to get faster mount speed (a blessing, if you ask me), as well as getting the aetherial currents for flying. One thing I might add about your voice actor point, odds are they are more concerned with the Japanese actors first and foremost, Urianger even gets a visual gag in a shadowbringers cutscene based on the fact that his voice actor was in Yu-gi-oh. I think they should have included way more gameplay in this MSQ than the previous ones. With a slower story there should have been something to carry your interest forward. Until this point, it was the momentum they have built with the MSQ and the 10+ years of story telling. You can't relay on that anymore, yet we get an MSQ that is the same ammount of cutsceens as EW? Even in the first 2 zones there were opportunities to have some minigames or solo duties, yet we just read on.
And as we read on.... Why? Where is the voice acting? This was a issue I had with the whole MSQ, but especially noticable at the start. It felt like a lot of cutsceen that should have been, were not voiced for some reason.

I like Wuk Lamat, she's such a sweet character, I hadn't seen anything about her voice actor until this video, but I would agree with you about her weaknesses. They hammed them up a bit, but I thought it was an effort to make her relatable to the average person. A couple of my bigger gripes with the writing.
    1) they over indulged themselves in trying to adapt real worls culture into FFXIV, which led to over explaining and taking away from the story or character interactions.
    2) Wuk Lamat ALWAYS insists that the WoL accompany her on mundane things, when that time could have been spent interacting with other characters besidez Wuk Lamat.
    3) way to much Telling and not enough Showing in the script.

    • @thesunthrone
      @thesunthrone 22 дня назад +12

I can maybe agree with the first two, but that last one absolutely drives me nuts in this whole discourse. There is plenty of showing - people just don't pay attention, as evidenced in these comments. How Preach instantly doesn't get that Wuk Lamat is a sheltered princess that hasn't really stepped outside her capital is beyond me, and all of that IS SHOWN, it's just a question of whether the streamer is able to have some time to reflect what they just saw instead of needing to constantly talk and entertain the audience. And wait til' we get to Zoraal Ja and his motivations... it's clear so many players didn't pay attention and needed someone to spell him out for them.
I could perhaps agree that some of the telling seems redundant and too often - and even then, in the case of Wuk Lamat's repeated catchphrases, it's a tell that she is just horribly insecure and trying to fake courage and confidence. But then, when I thought "Wuk Lamat is being annoying with constantly stating what she wants to think", I didn't just stop there and feel annoyed, but I thought for just a minute to figure out WHY she is being annoying and WHY she constantly states what she wants to think, believe, do. Seems like most players just stopped at "she's annoying" and didn't bother to consider why the writers want them to feel that way.

      1) when they don't, sometimes people feel left out and they've commented on this before. They really take it seriously to introduce things that have similarities to real life cultures.
      2) so there wasn't enough fan service of you talking with erenville so the story is bad
      3) valid criticism of the writing, lots of linear dialogue catch ups for some things, though often it seems they were doing that to not overdo some tropes they've done in the past, like having to get someones gear out of a chest when we save them from being imprisoned as an very light and irrelevant example. Simple things that don't really need to be shown. But I do agree there's still more telling than showing in some instances that hurts the story.

@Disconnected66 I never said the story was bad. Wuk Lamat also makes the WoL the 3rd wheel on a number of occasions. The game often has the party split up and there are so many times when I'd rather be with the other group. The scions that go with you basically don't matter in act 1.

Too much Wuk Lamat in the later half and not enough of others and too much telling us instead of being more creative with quests and storytelling to tell us about this continent. In regards to your first point, I thought that was one of the strengths of the expansion, they just didn’t execute it well.

She was designed as a last child, naive protected princess (or? spoilers, spoilers), and was not intended to be part of the race. Until the his brother is bringing the war. Although she was a capable warrior, she didn't have her fight yet. In the great kingdom of her legendary father, she didn't face true conflict except some spar. Contrast to big brother, fight as military leader and bear more burden of glory, she is more like a white sheet. Also, we are welcome to be critistic, since we are also play judge of the race by design even not told. Even more important, these clues need to be lead to find the city of gold, which still be mystery until very last of the race. Those stones proves you got the lesson, but it is how you use it matters.

It’s nothing crazy but also having only completed the 90 quests I’m really enjoying the summer vibe of the xpac and just soaking it all up. The story is nothing to write home about so far but its a vibe. I’m just enjoying the adventure and its been pleasant to be able to mostly throw away a lot of the stuff that came before and jump into something fresh. I also agree it’s weird with the scions. I’m totally down for Krile to have her story but I almost feel like Alphi and Alisaie are just there because they weren’t confident enough to tell a story without them? Like they were worried about people complaining if they didn’t include these characters people had grown attached to. Well I feel like they really aren’t needed here. Their stories are all about told and its time they stepped away from the spotlight. Especially with a smaller scoped story such as this one I think it would add more weight if we had less friends to rely on.

I felt like I got the concept right away, and then it just became "go here, now go here, now go here" x20. I enjoyed the Hanu Hanu side a lot more, and I'm happy I did that first, but altogether it's a lot of talking and cutscenes and not enough for the player to really do.

The xpac is nice (I am enjoying it) but it doesn't stand out compared to the competition and there's a lot of RPG competition which is FFXIV's main attraction, the story (not referring to MMOs as FFXIV competes both as an MMO and a story driven RPG which many people log in to play then leave until the next patch). In terms of MMO competition, WoW was kicked on their butt but has since gotten back up. It is time FFXIV makes some changes as well otherwise, the future may be rough. I say this as someone who loved FFXI and has played FFXIV 1.0 / 2.0 onward - They cannot rest on their laurels nor play it safe, that is not how gaming works because that's how people get bored.

There were times where Wuk Lamat seemed great and times the english VA fell flat (and not just Wuk Lamat). I think it was a general failure of the localization team. Odd pirate man on the ship at the start, Wuk Lamat's "dramatic" lines during (redacted) which were much stronger in Japanese, and Y'shtola-makes-a-phone-call all being prime examples. I don't blame any of the actors, they all have the necessary range. I wonder if they're allowed to see the scenes they're acting, or any direction at all.

    • @aznhomig

The differences in VA quality imo is more readily apparent in a later zone with the actors with more North American accents. I suspect it's a quality difference in the VA studios CU3 typically uses in the UK versus the ones they used in the US for the North American accented characters.

I don't think Preach has reached some of the areas where a couple of the VAs fall flat but yes, they do in terms of range. Wuk Lamat especially (not the VA's fault, see below) and only because she "fake yells". Like when you are a kid, you know you're supposed to be quiet, but you want to imitate yelling so you "yell" in your talking voice. That's what she does a few times and it's a huge VA / acting sin. That being said, I do not attribute that to the VA. I attribute that to the person directing the VA, they should've directed the VA to shout appropriately and have them re-do it if the first attempt was no good.

At some point the V.A. for Wuk got better. Idk if it will keep the quality, but in the last voiced cutscenes Sena did great... Maybe it was lack of conficende in the beginning of the game, idk. But in the last ones she did amazing.

I didn't knew the EN V.A. for Wuk Lamat was trans.. But I do think the voice acting for her is terrible. It's emotionless, when she "screams" is just awful. It looks like Sena didn't even tried to put some character into it. Look at her alpaca scene in english and then in japanese, you WILL notice what I'm trying to say.
You know when someone need to scream but they are actually a little embarassed so they just speak a little louder? Thats Wuk Lamat screaming in english, someone speaking a little louder.
I hope they invite more trans, gay, non binary voice actors/actresses, I'm really happy to find out they are doing it, but I'm sad that, for me, it was the worst voice acting in the whole game. So it's like she has memories from childhood of these people and she interacts with them in the main city. There are a lot of people from different countries in the UK and the U.S., but me going to their shop to buy tacos, sushi, or any other food doesn't really tell me anything deep about their culture. I feel like that's the point of showing these shops to you in the intro - this is all she knows of these people's culture and tries to pretend she knows all about them because she talks to shop keepers. She knows what they like to eat and wear like most tourists.
Also, when the NA VA for Wuk Lamat tells me her character is just dumb? Then I have to believe that is the direction she was given.

I had no idea that Wuk Lamats VA was trans until I saw a post about it, after I finished the MSQ. I don’t care at all that they’re trans. I just simply did not like the characters VA at all, which is rough for a character who gets so many lines, so much screen time, and who is the main protagonist of the expansion.

If you run Borderless Windowed you have to set it to full screen. Then type in your actual resolution. Hit Apply. Then change it back to Borderless Window. Otherwise the game runs in like 720p or some nonsense. I played for year like that not knowing but it might have finally been patched out. Also use FSR and set the scaling to 99. Looks so much better than DLSS even on a Nvidia card.

Lyse on the other hand had a fair bit of interaction with different people prior to SB. Even though she was masquerading as Yda she was still a Scion and worked with many different people. It was almost like she regressed back to a naive child after she took her mask off

Your opinion on Dawntrail's story is almost entirely going to be based around whether or not you like Wuk Lamat. For me, she was a pretty big disappointment. The VA was fine, not great but better than some of the VAs the side characters get (particularly in Shaaloani), but the whole her story felt like one we've already been told before. Naive, headstrong, and a little bit dumb girl with grand ambitions for peace for her people who eventually develops into a competent leader through her story sounds a lot like Lyse's character arc.
I think the pacing is also pretty bad in this one. The pacing for ffxiv has never been great, not even in ShB (I'm looking at you trolley quests), but there is so much fluff in this story. Having the same amount of cutscenes as EW while telling a much simpler story leads to these filler scenes that really should have been replaced or at the very least cut.
I don't know if this worth mentioning, but I've never felt like FFXIV was a game where I'd ask "WHY ARE YOU PEOPLE NOT ASKING QUESTIONS" before. The Scions and Erenville in particular gloss over some things that should be priority number 1 only for them to come back later and ask at a random moment.
Thanks for reading me vent about DT. I did still enjoy it for what it's worth, but it's the least enjoyable MSQ for me since ARR. The EXs are aces though, very excited for savage.

16:30 I have to disagree with this bit a little. They make it quite clear that Wuk Lamat is quite sheltered, shes clearly spent most of her life in the city, only occasionally venturing to the surrounding regions. So while she "knows" her people she doesn't really know their customs and stuff like that. She knows what she has been told, but doesn't have firsthand experience. This also kinda makes sense since she seems to not vibe with most forms of transportation in Tural which is kinda funny.
It's annoying for sure, but I would say it fits the narrative. In my opinion at least.

But its still passable. Her personailty of being second Lise is a bit weird especially when she had just met you for the first time she left home. She really should not be so naive. She is also supposed to be a powerful warrior so with that and her personality, I cant help but think it was just for the niche gap moe trope with a powerful warrior but who is childish.

Absolutely nobody treats her seriously as the crown princess in the beginning, whereas they were fawning over her brothers. That shows that she is clearly not popular or even established among the people as anyone that amounts to something. And while she displays clear intimate knowledge of the capital, she knows very little outside it aside from the Hanuhanu village because that's where the festival is.
She's very literally a courtyard child that has only seen what her parents showed her and where she had gone on vacation in.
