Nice video as always bro.. very informative. thank you for the circuit search, doing a winter formal in a few weeks and will be looking for that circuit testers within the next few days!!!!
The circuit tester is a good add to the kit, but I would pair it with something like the klein tools fuse finder. Also I always like to make sure myself or one of the techs knows amd has access to the location of the fusebox and light controls of the location
About to purchase the Pix Bars. Any recommendations on how I can mount them to mic stands? Or any stand recommendations other than using clamps? Thank you!
I did DJ for a school disco this weekend. It is my one DJ gig a year as it is a hobby for me. I use VirtualDJ and Soundswitch, and I not only have my own lights (a couple of small movers, pars, a bar and pinspots) but I also integrate the lights the school has in the hall. Makes for a great light show to go with the music.
Dude you could have run a lot more lighting on a 20 amp circuit for sure! Definitely needed MORE pix bars and more moving heads! Also, I think you should switch to the WDMX Controller (the Wolf Mix one) definitely will result in more dynamic and engaging lighting looks!!
You seem a bit dissapointed. The crowd needed much time to go warm up. Maybe a lot of them had to go home early. It’s not always your fault. You did a great job! I do think you could have made a bigger impact with more subs and much stronger moving heads. With those bright lightbars the movers seem to be overwhelmed.
I love how high school dances today pretty much consists of music that older Millennial generation was listening to in high school and college. Basically, most of the good danceable music is from 13 to 20+ years ago.
Something to note about that circuit tester, just because it shows that they are both on the same circuit doesn't actually mean they are on the same. All it is testing is if the hot side is independent between 2 circuits. But it can't test wether they are independent on the same leg. Because when testing 2 outlets it will only show if the circuit 'good' if they are on different sides of the breaker box. If the outlets may be on the same side of the breaker box and are separate circuits yet the tester will show that it is not an individual circuit. Two independent circuits on the same leg is no different for us than on different legs. Problem is, using that device can make someone hunt around for one it shows is separate and make longer unnecessary power runs. It works but misses separate circuits at least 50% of the time depending on the main feed into the building. They admitted to me that it has the limitations I just mentioned and never thought someone would figure it out.
Hey Rick! Great video as always very instructive, i want to ask you how you did the config for delayed speakers? i have a PA2 but it only have a max of 3,43 meters of delay and in the video looks like if the speakers were furthest, how did you calculate distance or ms to apply? and PA" was enough in this case? it would be great if you can explain or better do a video about it thank you!!
reverberant space.... for me the solution it would be more speakers spreaded with lower volume, raised and pointing to the crowd... of course maintaining the delays...
@@DJILLEE yes it does... the sound is reflected by the walls.... more output, more ping-pong reflections from the walls so more echoes :D It's just physics :D Using LD Maui in such ambient is a bad choice
@@voxproevents6405 reverberation time time is measured using the RT60 measurement. You use a sound meter to measure when a reverberation tail drops by 60db from the original source sound. That means the starting point is irrelevant. It’s independent of the sound pressure level. In fact, when the source volume can’t be amplified enough or the background noise level is too high we use a measurement of RT30 or RT20 and you multiply it by 2 or 3 respectively to get your RT60 rating. My background (besides being a dj) is in sound engineering, system deployments and system tuning. I tune large sound systems for theaters and concert venues and I measure everything in in the venue for phase/time alignment, reverberation times, reverberation frequency plots and overall eqs for the system processors. I even create impulse responses of the particular rooms so if recordings made in those rooms need parts re-recorded in a studio you can “place” those parts back in the room with the original recordings. Line arrays would be a better choice in this type of room so you can throw the sound further backwards, direct the sound away from reflective surfaces such as the ceiling and possibly walls, as well as shade it from front to back. With a line array you most likely wouldn’t need delay towers in that size of room. However, schools do not have this kind of budget and for the most part, no one cares that much about the audio quality to even justify this there. With what he had, I think this deployment is just fine.
So yeah man for this event you DID need a LOT more lighting! Par washes on crank stands behind you, and at least your two BOTH Zooming washes, in addition to more moving spots!
lighting was def weak, not to mention the programming of the 2 moving heads they were pointed at the ceiling & the walls most of the time lol pix bars would be dope for a back drop on a stage or something def would not use them for something like this
2 tops are plenty if deployed right with the right spl. for 1k in a large room 4 subs is ideal. Check out my gig log from my 900 kid prom I talk more about it
Well at some points you can hear the people sing over the music lol but hell no its not loud enough these are begginer tops and for 1k people you will need a bigger setup so you have the volume, headroom and quality and so its not on limit all the time lol😂
@@djnvision What everyone things is 'enough' for a venue, is going to vary. I do a 600ish student prom every year, and we bring four RCF TTL6 tops, and four RCF 9006 subs.
Rick, awesome gig log again. Love the pix bar lights. I saw a video a month ago where you used the A.I force 1 dmx hardware. I’m working with a xz, rekordbox and dashlight 5 at the moment and for smaller gigs lightrider. I’m searching something more easier and faster to use than dashlight. Did you like force 1. How does it did the job with movers? Is it something like lightrider or better? I wish I could switch to soundswitch but its in Serato environment. I’m planning to buy those pix bar at your website.
What’s the reason for running the LD Icoa PA over your JBL SRX/VRX rig? The JBL PA looks to be a lot more powerful and better suited to this gig. Not hating but genuinely curious
I think cause he just got these speakers and he's testing them out but yeah these icoa's are not loud enough for 1000 people at all and the Srx/vrx setup would be way more sutable for this event (lol you can hear people sing over the music thats how you can tell its not loud enough the subs are ok for that room but tops hell no😂)
Question: How often do you run into issues getting permission to use smoke/haze machines. Lately I feel like I am getting a lot of nos from venues because of concerns it will trigger automatic fire alarms
Seems a little underwhelming compared to previous events? Lack of moving heads and other beam effects seems a waste of bearing in mind you could use the hazer.
Kinda like the pixel bars. The blinders being on battery alone is a pretty nice add, though don't think this was the right use of them. Probably would have helped to speed them up, too. A crowd like this you've gotta give them mic work. You saw the reaction when you did. They needed guidance, and the people in the back needed some connection with them being so far away. They were clearly ready to rage, you just had to find that connection with them. And do a little more research on the new music they like - some missed opportunities unless the school said outright you couldn't play them, but given you dropped Mo Bamba...I doubt it.
I definetly think that mic work was the cause of this. Too bad showout couldnt have been here to hype it up. With schools music only goes so far, you have to work the crowd with the mic.
I put out a song request table so that they can put down their requests, which allows me ignore 95% of it. Keep it all upbeat and positive and songs everyone knows. It’s not that much different from weddings in philosophy.
Yes severely underpowered system for this size of a venue and this many people.. You should be running 6x6 minimum (6pa/6sub) and probably line arrays..

Damn that crowd was lame. And imo those light bars really did nothing when the kids drowned out all the lighting. Def needed uplighting or movers, hell even a gigbar or some wash lights. Maybe from down on the floor it looked good but from aerial view this didn’t look all that appealing.
I don’t understand why everyone likes those light bars, they are ugly, def not for a big school dance like this and have barely any coverage. Should of went with uplights around the gym.
To be honest, this looks no where near 1,000 students in the room. Maybe 350-400 at one point in the video. I guess the other students just stood around outside talking or did not attend the dance.
This venue is for a line array sound system my firend...point source have their own limitations...and more powerfull lights all over the people...
I think if the budget is limited, He did excellent work. ❤
Hmmm...seems like they all enjoyed themselves. These schools dont have the budget for line arrays. If the kids can hear it then that's what matters.
Just because the space needs a bigger setup doesn't always mean the client has the budget for it. Never give shit away for free.
@ihatesigningupforsht Excellent I think in the same way.
Bring the bass and tops or stay at home I cannot believe you would use such a small system for that many people
