    The Lagoon 42 was our favorite at the show this year; it seems to be a great value for the amount of space, plus uncommon niceties such as the self-tacking jib. FYI, the 42 does optionally come with a washer/dryer combo that is installed in the owner's side, I believe inside the cabinets you see on the right at 13:40. Dream Yacht Charters had a 42 at the show with the washer/dryer installed and it looked like a nice installation.

    Last season you liked the lagoon 450…..may be a bulkhead issue inherent in build. Heads up. Search around for vids on this.

      Yes, I have subsequently heard that. We did not know that back then. It is a perfect size for living on but if there are QC issues than we would pass. Much more research get done before you buy.

    Great content! I have chartered Lagoon 380, 400 and 450. One aspect when you look at the bed that is a big thing for me and that, I think, you are overlooking: Do you have to crawl to go in in out of the bed (380) or can you walk to the side and sit to lay down like home (42). For me, I sometimes get out of the bed few times a night in sketchy anchor and/or bad wheather. Same goes for when you try to make the bed ! Keep up the good work!

    • @Bowmans-Woods
      @Bowmans-Woods  7 лет назад

      We do mention a few times in the series how we like the wider rooms with the beds you can actually walk around. So we are factoring that in. You are right. Throwing off all your blankets so you can crawl over the foot of the bed to use the head at night would be a pain. It all about how much you can afford to spend. We are thinking 44-45' is the perfect size for comfort and not totally our of question for price in the used market. Would we have even more comfort and room on a Lagoon 52? Of course. But we probably can't afford that so these episodes are more about showing people what the options are. Who knows some may find the 380 perfectly sized or have the money to afford even bigger than the 52. Generally you get what you pay for. More comfort = more money.

      Agree. We are closely looking at the new Lagoon 40 and 42. Our budget does not allow for more. Too bad the 40 is too new to be at that show. This is the replacement of the 39, an in between 380 and 42. I just received the price list with all the options for those 2 models....I was chocked to see the cost of those options... Like 19k euro for the Genset, 12k euro watermaker, L42 hard bimini 12k euro or the AC at 20k euro. The price we see at show is really bare bone, not the one presented. We need to add 100k to 150k euro of options for a live aboard !

    Another big thing to consider is the engine access. Is the hatch outside or do you have to pull off the mattress? If the latter you will have engine stink from fumes inside. Is there 360 degrees access to the engine to reach all service positions?

    • @Bowmans-Woods
      @Bowmans-Woods  7 лет назад

      So far all the boats that have been in our series has engine access from the back transom area but I know what you mean. Some you have to lift the bed to get at the engine. The Antares are like that.

    I really noticed the stairs on the boats. On the 42, the steps from the cockpit to the top sitting/boom area were really small. Having to scramble up them to reach the sails at 3 am during a squall would be a challenge. That's a nitpick though as I'm sure they can come with different styles.

    • @Bowmans-Woods
      @Bowmans-Woods  7 лет назад

      Agreed. Some of the stairs on some of the boats were way to narrow or small to successfully navigate them in the dark on a lurching boat. I think you will need both hands too in order to not wipe out.

  • @mrmped1
    @mrmped1 7 лет назад

    Something I noticed this year from last year. The floors on the Lagoons don't seem to be as noisy. The noisy floors would be a deal breaker for me. They would squeak and make noise while sailing and walking on them. I would make it near impossible to sleep while under way or when someone was just walking around. The Leopards front porch makes a big difference when trying to cool the boat and I wish more boats had them. I really like the custom boats like the St Francis. Last but not least. You do not want round seating areas, You can't lay down and stretch out....square is much better. The St. Francis MKII was designed by someone on the Cruisers forum and done in live time a few years ago, and he got into a lot of detail about what works and what doesn't for cruising. You should go back and check it out when you have a chance. Good luck out there.

    • @Bowmans-Woods
      @Bowmans-Woods  7 лет назад

      I noticed that too. Last year a lot of the boats really creaked when you walked on them. There is a simple fix for that, which they may have done. You can get some pieces of felt or cork that are sticky on the back that you can put on the support beams under the floor and the boards won't creak when you walk on them. Simple fix. As for the front seating on the Leopards.... that is a nice feature but the Lagoon 450 and other Lagoons have front seating areas as well, but dont take away from interior cabinets and sacrifice a good forward facing Nav station by putting a door in the front of your Cat to get to it. I prefer walking around the side to get to the seating in the front, like on the 450.

  • @allynonderdonk7577

    Just as a side note, I believe the 440 is almost the same mold as the 45.. You can pick up a used Lagoon 440 for around 240k-290k...perhaps even an owners version. Save the 500k off the new price and pretty much get the same thing in the used market. The savings alone could buy you two brand new engines for like 40-50k total....installed. Rebuilt for even less. Nice tour!

    • @Bowmans-Woods
      @Bowmans-Woods  7 лет назад

      Agreed. There are some good deals on the used market if you are not laser focussed on an exact model. You can often find something close that is just a couple of years older.

  • @russcattell955i

    Compared to our 28' motor cruiser, the 38 is huge, but not enough to live on full time cruising the world. Moving to the 42, that boat is at another level, just like the FP 44, they seem to be where you are going. For me the squared off carpentry on the FP is a deal breaker. As I don't sail I cannot comment on the pro & cons of which sails better, I just look at living aboard underway & moored up.

    • @Bowmans-Woods
      @Bowmans-Woods  7 лет назад

      Thanks Russ. Like you Janice is not a fan of the cheap square cabinetry. Keep watching because once you see what the Custom boat builders do on their interiors it is hard to go back and look at a Leopard and FP again and be excited. We may end up buying a used production boat because that is all we can afford but if we can swing a used Custom boat, we will probably do that. Time will tell.

  • @Paul_C

    Craig, went to the show on a regular day. Came away from it somewhat flustered. The mayhem caused by the three storms probably will lock the market for some time. That said, take a look at a company Neel, no cat but trimaran. The 51 ft will be to big (but it is fantastic), the 45 should give you all the space you need. Price of a 51 ft around $ 685.000 US (bare bone, ex tax) just in case the lottery... etc, etc.

    • @Bowmans-Woods
      @Bowmans-Woods  7 лет назад

      We have seen the NEEL a number of times. Problem with a Trimaran is the space in the actual hulls is much smaller. It probably sails quite fast but you lose a lot of interior volume.

    very concise. so few good videos out there like these! But Did I miss the Gemini Catamarans? I think I need to start small. LOVE, love, love the lagoons, but those prices are getting up there...

    • @Bowmans-Woods
      @Bowmans-Woods  7 лет назад

      Thanks Bob. The Geminis were there. We cover them very briefly in an upcoming episode but to be honest, they are more of a Coastal Cruiser type of Cat. I know a woman who lives on one and she says she would never consider crossing an ocean in it, so I didn't put much coverage into the Geminis because I know we wouldn't like it for our needs of Circumnavigation while living full time on the boat. I hear you on the prices of the Lagoons and others though. Pretty steep!

    • @bobbobbinson1841
      @bobbobbinson1841 7 лет назад

      Your correct in that most opinions lean towards them being mainly Coastal Cruisers. I guess Im deciding between used gemini to start crusing then move up, or wait much longer for a used lagoon 380 and be done.

  • @oivindwaanensen
    @oivindwaanensen 7 лет назад

    Thought the new Lagoon 40 was supposed to replace the 39 and 42? Fair the 42 then will be considered a bit odd since short lived and thus low future value. Any thoughts abour that? Great channel btw

    • @Bowmans-Woods
      @Bowmans-Woods  7 лет назад

      The newer models have just 2 numbers. The 42 and the 52 are new. The 380 and the 450 are older models. They will replace those soon.

  • @csranch2000

    Enjoying the tours. What are some of the price points on these new cats?

    • @Bowmans-Woods
      @Bowmans-Woods  7 лет назад

      Thanks. I will mention the exact prices when we get to the episodes with the custom Cats since they come with a price tag that includes everything you would need to live on. Unfortunately these production Cats come pretty much bare bones so the price to get it kitted out with everything you need to live on one would be a lot more than what a salesman will quote you is the price of the Cat. Since each individual owner has a myriad of choices about what type of Radar, AIS, Watermaker, Generator, Solar Panels, Wind generator etc etc, they put on the boat the final finished price could be very different even if 2 people started with the same basic Cat. So I didn't want to confuse people by quoting low prices that aren't real world valid. For example the Lagoon 380 may only have a sticker price of $350,000-. But by the time you add all the extras it will be a lot more. Perhaps $500,000 when all is done. The Lagoon 52 may say it is under $1 million but it will be way more than that when done. I guess you see what I mean. Confusing. The custom boats have all the bells and whistles already installed so the sticker price looks a lot higher but it may not be that bad if you don't have to add things after the fact. Hope that explains why no prices.

      @csranch2000 7 лет назад

    Gday are you going to be talking about the cost at any time or is it a case of if you got to ask you cant afford it.

    • @Bowmans-Woods
      @Bowmans-Woods  7 лет назад

      We will mention cost when we get to the custom boats that come with all the bells and whistles needed to live aboard thrown in. The problem with the Mass Production boats is that the price is a base price and then you have to add a ton of extras before you could really be expected to live full time on it. The cost of all those extras would be very different depending on whether the new owners wanted to go with bare bones stuff or top of the line stuff. So hard for us to quote an exact number. If you google each boat you can get an idea of the base price on each boat.

    • @ontheroadwithjohn
      @ontheroadwithjohn 7 лет назад

      Would be interested to have a ball park number and then your opinion if its a fair price, over price or good value. Say measure to your standard of what you would like to have. I number to me on its own wouldnt mean a lot on its own because of the dollar difference but with your standard included it would give a better idea of a value. Great shows thanks for showing whats going on in your part of the world

    Would have loved to hear a little more about Janice's concluding thoughts. Apart from that I very much enjoyed this video. Cats really offer a lot more space per feet of hull length.

    • @Bowmans-Woods
      @Bowmans-Woods  7 лет назад

      Thanks. Janice did give her final thought. She like the 42 over the 38'. This episode was an easy win for the 42. The 380 was just too small to live on. There wasn't much debate on this episode. The next episode we have a harder time ranking which one we liked in what order.

    38 is perfect. You get too big and then too many people want to come visit! Its why we wanted our cottage on an island...stops people from 'just popping by' Plus bigger is more stuff to fix and pricier

    • @Bowmans-Woods
      @Bowmans-Woods  7 лет назад

      Ha Ha. I guess that is one way to think about it to justify smaller is better. Janice and I love socializing so we don't mind having a lot of people visit. But I hear what you are saying.

    First I must come clean, I own a 400S2 Hull #315.
    That said the reason the 380is the most popular Catamaran in history is price and design. The 380 is a great sailing boat and we have sailed with 380’s all the way across the Pacific.
    The best bang for the buck for sure, long live the iconic 380.
    My impression of the 42 after being with them on our Pacific crossing is that it sails well and is more spacious than my 400S2 but, and it’s a big but, the lack of closed storage, drawers, and hanging closets is a deal breaker.
    The 42S2 will be on its way and Lagoon will fix that shortfall.
    The 42 owners loved our boat, 3 sinks and drawers.
    If My boat needed to be replaced I would get another 400S2.
    20,000 nm on the odometer and I still have a very good feel for the 400.
    Do I want a L52 ? Yes I do but I could not afford to sail her off the dock.
    So from New Zealand cheers to all, I have a boat tour of the 400S2 on my RUclips channel.
    Off the Starboard Hull.
    Keep up the excellent videos and I know how much work it is, I also know that many people will find your efforts worthwhile.

      My long term plan is to motor up the Trent Severn, lock 45 may be my downfall due to beam.
      The lock master at #45 thinks we could fit but an accurate measure at both ends would be the determining factor.
      If we don’t fit we will mast up in Kingston and sail the big lakes up to Georgian Bay.
      I want to do 2 seasons in “The Bay” then mast down in Chicago to complete the loop.

  • @willpeters320

    I understand having rounded tables and hard furniture with rounded corners might prevent the odd bruise or two and that is certainly a valid point.
    What I don't get is the acceptance of that big square concussion post in the middle of the salon on the 42 . It's MUCH more of a hazard and always in the way .. Just watch how much of the video of the main salon area is shot with the big shiny thing in the way. I'll take a cat with out a compression post in such a hazardous place. It's a Bad design for a home that moves on water, and if you to have it a least make round to reduce the number of serious injuries.

    • @Bowmans-Woods
      @Bowmans-Woods  7 лет назад

      Good point. Clearly many of the mass production builders are focussed on keeping their cost down and rounding corners must be too much for them to afford. ha ha

    Hello Craig and Janis,
    I had an epiphany concerning the sailing life. What ever you buy, make damn sure your spouse can handle it, alone! Sailing & maintenance. No one plans to have a casualty at sea but it has certainly happened.

    • @Bowmans-Woods
      @Bowmans-Woods  7 лет назад +1

      No. We in Canada aren't that strange. We call a used boat ..... a "used boat". ha ha. An "Owners Version" means instead of having 2 cabins in each hull (for a total of 4), you have one entire hull dedicated to one big "Owners" Cabin and much larger bathroom (or Head) with a large separate shower. We've been saying we are determined to have an owners version all series. Did you think we meant just used this whole time?

    • @MikeSantis
      @MikeSantis 7 лет назад

      Yes, I thought owners version meant a used boat :-) Strange to call it owners version though. I can just say that my fiend's Lagoon 45 is an owners version then :-) They left Denmark in the Summer and now they are at the Canary islands getting ready to cross the Atlantic by the end of November.

    The 380 is still the leader in it´s class in my opinion. The integration of saloon, deck and helm station is fantastic and the owners head with a BIG seperated shower is gorgeous and unmatched for it´s size and can only be found on boats of much bigger size. It´s an old design redecorated but the interior lay out is still the best one around for a cruising couple with lot´s usuable and practical storage. Please also take under consideration the handling on bigger boats. Yeah the finish looks cheap. I believe the first 380 S2 were made in cherry wood that looked and felt a little better. The 380 can easy take a genny, a water maker that frees up capacity for extra fuel and an extra big cooler in the forward guest berth that can be easy converted in general storage once taking out the matress. The guest head can be used for laundry with a small 10 Lbs portable washing machine. It is easy to enclose the hard top with isen glas for weather protection while on the helm and there is plenty of space for a good size solar system and dingy. The only thing that is unfortunate.... the boom is not handeled from the hard top. That prevents You from a clean extension and installation of the solar panels to the cabin roof. So now You need an expensive self supporting arch or a crapy looking fixture to the davits while otherwise You would attach to the structure of the hard top. It also makes the after deck functioning a lot cleaner if there are no lines from the boom
    I always think what I can live with.... Yeah and what I can not live without ?
    The 420 is great but I absolutly don´t like the kind of flybridge that does not comunicate well with the rest of the boat.
    Hahaha Yeah and the cruising kiddy is waving a red flag.
    My favorite is still the 400 S2 owners. Full covered deck. Handling of the boom is from the top of the hard top. The nav station is kind of integrated in the seating area. Guest head is bigger and has seperated shower. Double sink, Double fridge freezer
    Only thing I don´t like is the beds..... access only from one side....... However strange here is a version that shows a bed with access from both sides www.yachtworld.com/boats/2012/Lagoon-400-S2-2997359/Venezia/Italy#.Wea9-Vu0PIU

    • @Bowmans-Woods
      @Bowmans-Woods  7 лет назад

      A 380 could work if you don't need a ton of extra storage space for all your stuff but we will not have a home to go back to so everything we own in the world will have to be on our boat, so the 380 just feels too small. That could be just us. Perhaps other people are real minimalists and don't have a lot of stuff.
