  • For the last five weeks we've been exploring Mexico's Baja Peninsula as the first leg of our open ended journey overlanding (a.k.a. driving our camper) from the USA to Argentina. Today we're saying adios to Baja and hopping on an overnight ferry from La Paz to Mazatlán. Oh, and we're taking our dog with us. From paperwork to expenses and dog policies and what the boat is like, we're taking you along for the entire journey. Let's go!

That TMC office is quite close to my house. Pity I didn't bump into you to say Hi. You are already learning a great lesson with regards to Latino culture (very broad strokes, but I think it generally applies): Patience.... A given time is rarely the actual time and if you stress over it, you'll have a bad time. If you go with the flow, you'll be more than fine :-) Have fun! (BTW, Pepe is right. Chiapas is awesome).

I’ve done this same trip on Baja ferries 2 years ago. They are pet friendly somewhat. You have two option with a pet. 1. Book a pet friendly cabin ( but your pet can’t leave the cabin, so puppy pads are needed). 2. Put your pet in the pet room in a crate. You will be allowed limited opportunities to visit your pet. They do not allow anyone to sleep in their vehicle. I snuck my dog on deck to use the bathroom in the middle of the night and no one said anything.

I prefer the eight hour crossing to Topolobampo as the coast is a pleasant drive and 18 hours on a ferry, even in our van is too much.
Cheers from Cali Colombia. (Colombia is astonishingly pet friendly, much quieter than Mexico and garbage free).

Perfect timing… I just found you last week and I’m planning my “Baja ferries/TMC” with dog soon. Thanks
But you didn’t mention if Kramer needed a dog kennel, because I’ve heard that…
And was the price based on the weight of your truck camper?
I’m laughing because after years living in Mexico, I totally relate to the “what the heck is going on?”.
Love the comment, “It’s only slightly nerve wracking”

I also was wondering about your question if you were required to have a dog crate 🤷🏼‍♀️ as well if Kramer did his business on the deck. My girl has a had a rough go of it driving in Mexico and not finding “squat spot” = grass. Dirt and rocks in most areas. Can’t imagine her doing it on the deck of a boat. At least the boy dogs can lift their leg.

How ever did you remember how to get back to your truck? I'd have to leave bread crumbs or tie a string!

😂 It would have certainly been difficult if we weren't in the very back left hand corner of the boat. We knew to walk to the back then turn left.lol

That truck moving the trailers around, an its driver, here they are usually called a "yard dog" but apparently they have a bunch of names. Do you really not know a lick of Spanish? It would never crossed my mind to do a trip like that without some Spanish.

We’re not fluent at all but are currently taking classes while on the road. Each day we’re here it’s getting a little bit better!

@@chrisandsara Ah, my Spanish is a disaster still so I cant say much. But you telling that security lady no an trying to tell that man that one of you was from Kentucky more than once, that came across as no Spanish at all. Two of the first things most classes teach is how to say you dont speak Spanish in Spanish and how to tell people where your from. Usually right after they teach how to order a beer, the words for married vs unmarried woman, an how to ask how much something costs. Think about that one for a minute.
