1:16 Holy shit, that moky melee clip was nuts. What he can do with Fox in melee in and out of bracket is genuinely insane. Also this video is really well made, I can't wait for the next video!
Your script writing, performance, and editing are fucking GREAT dude. The jokes you have work well, both the verbal and visual ones, the topic is super sick and very clearly well thought out on your end. Keep this shit up, you’re doing a lot right, I dig it.
When you mentioned the animations in Halo 5 interrupting the movement flow, I recalled a discussion I had with a friend. He asked me why I liked the web swinging in Spider-Man 2 for the PS2 more than the one in the PS4 game, since it was more detailed in its animations. I realized it is because the swinging is snappier. There is no long animation for shooting the web: it just snaps, and it feels it causes the swinging to go faster in the PS2 game. I'd rather take snappy, instant movement than super detailed but slower animations
Very solid video! That skateboard creativity is a huge reason as to why Hack-and-Slash games have always been my favorite genre. You've got the ranking systems of games like DMC and Metal Gear Rising that incentivize stylish combos, the freeflow nature of God of War allowing you to experiment with new ways to break an encounter, or even something like Force Unleashed providing insane physics-breaking force manipulation giving way for all kinds of unusual interactions. It's the primary thing that inspires me to create games of my own and hopefully provide that same level of creative expression through interesting mechanics.
This is a big reason why Odyssey (and also BOTW) is my favorite game of all time. I feel like you can do so much with the game's mechanics, it gives a level of freedom I don't get from any other game.
That was a sick video. Loved hearing this breakdown on creativity, and the jokes killed! Informative stuff mixed with comedy is my cup of tea 👌 subscringled. All the way
Guilty gear letting you roman cancel basically anything into whatever else is such an amazing feature, I heard in the newest strive update you can't cancel DP's but I don't actually play that game anymore so whatever.
You can still cancel the heavy versions, but to make up for it the S versions are throw inmune. It's to make both variations more unique from each other and also because DP cancels where particularly op.
I really love your take on "skateboard creativity" game design. Never noticed but it's so true, also smash was the best example you could use to demonstrate it
Other type of creativity in game design is "build creativity". For a game like pokemon, it's being able to create your own pokemon team, personalize your pokemon with your choice of moves, ev and iv spread, ability, held item, and choosing you "selection" of pokemon. Most rpgs have this kind of creativity, but it's not exclusive to them. A roguelike like hades may also have it, in the form of choosing your boons, choosing you weapon, and combining those to create different types of builds, that makes different types of things. Basically, "build creativity" is the possibility of creating various playstyles that interacts with the game uniquely by using the tools that the game provides to do so, those may come in many forms, from just changing passive stats to being able to change active abilities. It's like using lego bricks to build something.
This was a great video! I was surprised someone touched on the skating / creating from scratch vibe that melee has. Had no idea fortnite had its own game engine now. Super insane but I agree with what you said. This is the aspect that makes games legendary and long lasting. Put the creativity into the player's hands.
I would of expected a video of this scale and this production quality to have more views in this amount of time. You have just earned yourself a new subscriber.
I think about this concept a lot and you've done a really solid job of explaining why modern games with "more options" stifle creativity. I fw you heavy bro, you seem chill to play Melee with
Great video! I will say Halo 5 is actually a great example of what you’re talking about in this video. Especially later in the games life the map traversal tech got super creative with things like ramp slides, super bounce, team jumps and crouch spam clambers marking giving a good portion of the maps a crazy amount of creativity especially the one in the clip Truth.
I've literally always had this same mentality when it comes to games i play, i love being able to play monster hunter or fighting games with TONS of self expression on how i play, how i look, what i do and everything. Love this vid
I think Spiderheck is a pretty great example of skateboard creativity. The physics based engine and fast gameplay allow for some crazy strategies and you can rarely find two people with similar play styles
Big fan of these kinds of videos good shit man. I'm hoping the next skate will have lots of what you mentioned with tons of ways people can make sick maps and modes
TF2 definitely falls into this category. The sheer amount of tech and creativity in something so ubiquitous as rocket jumping alone is insane. Not to mention the fashion scene, item names, and the endless world of very strange playstyles like Demopan, Penis Scout, and Thin Heavy. And don't get me STARTED on friendlies
Hey, thanks for this. I’ve been in a slump, like just statically and going forward boringly, I’m gonna hop on my switch and play something for a bit. Have a nice day
This is so true for melee ICs. Since there are endless options of desyncs, handoffs, desynced combos, it’s truly limitless what type of options you have to express yourself. Imo, they are the most expressive characters in melee. By watching I can tell if the player is very good at exicution I’d liked combos, has sub optimal combos but good neutral, or simply swags on you and dose things that you’ve never seen before. I hate it when ppl say the CHARACTER is boring where in reality the player is boring
My favorite Skateboard creativity game is Kingdom Hearts. 2 and 3 specifically. You can beat the game with basic Key hits, but weaving combos , magic, transformations and summons is the most fun part of those games.
Easily some of the most fun I've ever had playing a video game was during the original Halo's prime when a buddy and I came up with a multiplayer mode called "Warthog". Our friend group ended up getting so into it, we formed teams and rivalries. Lifelong friendships were tested; others were forged. For anyone who is curious, the rules were deceptively simple: *MAP:* Blood Gulch *SPECIAL SETTINGS:* unlimited sticky grenades *RULES:* If someone is on foot, you can only run them over or melee them. If you are on foot, you can throw sticky grenades at anyone in a Warthog. Sounds pretty basic, right? I just hope you've already formed a strong bond with most of your friends.
Impeccable video, had to add this to the "Gaming" playlist which is a rare thing. Suggestion to add the mang0 vs Plup Summit combo on Pokemon Stadium the next time you reference Melee haha :D Really enjoy how you were able to tie this overarching concept with so many video game examples and not narrow it down to just one series. Well done man!
Last comment, promise (?) Love the writing style, super ecomonic word choice that still crams in a tonne of personality and style (made at 03:30, seque was clean)
This video has a criminally low amount of views. I knew there was something special about all the games you listed that had me coming back again and again. Thank you for voicalizing it for me 😅
Btw you literally hit the nail with the issue with Tekken 8. Heat is such a powerful mechanic the game revolves entirely around it and agression. The original footsies, keep out, defensive playstyle that encouraged creativity is replaced by just pressing one button until the match is over.
I don't know why, but I remember that there was a music channel which posted chill Pokémon music sometimes. There was one with a slowpoke throughout the video. He had the same pfp as you, but since a long time I am unable to find him. You remind me of him for some reason.
After discovering tf2 rocket jumping, most other games movement just seem boring and flat. Its a blessing to find such an incredible form of emergent gameplay, but a curse in how my standards have been risen to almost unachievable heights.
I agree, those ledge grab animations ARE pointless! They ARE a worthless animation...in Melee. They SHOULD remove the pointless animation...from Melee...
On the topic of Halo's forge mode. Can we take a moment to appreciate Halo infinite's forge mode. Halo Infinites forge tool is phenomenal and players can build just about anything they want. It's just a shame 343 took a year to implement forge and also messed up everything else about the game.
LMAO, instantly demonized from the beginning. Someone of the best games ever made, Super Smash Brothers Melee, Team Fortress 2, Street Fighter Third Strike, Minecraft, Tetris, have insane freedom to express yourself.
You mean "throwing up a giant tower in less than ten seconds the moment a bullet passes anywhere nearby to immediately erase whoever shot at you then take off to look for more loot," right?
The Halo 5 example is a pretty poor comparison, considering the non-sprinting speed across the entire franchise has always been sluggish as hell. I still remember coming to Halo 1 from UT99 and Perfect Dark thinking "why the hell is this super soldier so slow and restricted to carrying a grand total of four weapons, two of which are locked into being specific types of grenade at all times?"
1:16 Holy shit, that moky melee clip was nuts. What he can do with Fox in melee in and out of bracket is genuinely insane. Also this video is really well made, I can't wait for the next video!
