Your tips about taking off the buds and even snipping the tops of your peppers makes a lot of sense. A plant is basically a bio-reactor; the roots pull it’s resources from the soil to convert them into produce and leaves. Forcing it to grow more roots early means it can pull in resources at a higher rate later when you want it’s production to be as robust as possible! It’s like a biological down payment

Just found your videos, so informative, I take my tomatoes plants and lay them on their side in the pots for a day or two, before I plant them, the plant will turn & start growing vertically. You then plant your tomato and the horizontal root system gets more water, which results in better growth.

This is the first year I cut the top off my pepper plant, I will admit it felt weird but seeing the new growth is crazy. It's going to be a beautiful plant when all is said and done.

Once I started watching your video, I couldn't stop. The condition of the soil in the garden is always beautiful. In Japan, in the summer, in addition to what you are growing, we plant sweet potatoes, bitter melons, pumpkins, watermelons, and eggplants. All of them will surely grow big in your soil. Edamame, peanuts, and asparagus are also recommended. For herbs, how about shiso, myoga, perilla sesame? If I had a beautiful garden like yours, I would want to plant them all!

We've tilled up an old vegetable garden which had pretty much turned into part of the lawn. I've started some seeds indoors but will be sowing most of the directly into the garden. I'm looking forward to more videos as it's been years since I've had a vegetable garden and I think I've forgotten everything my parents taught me🙄

Awww, I hope the little tomato plant makes it. You and I plant tomatoes similarly. I put Gaia Green 444 and a bit of bonemeal in the hole, then water with diluted Seaboost. Pretty cool, we are on opposite sides of the continent and the techniques are the same!

Thanks for sharing your vegetable garden tips. I’m going to try spacing my tomatoes 24 inches apart. Would love to see more videos of how your garden progresses. Mine always looks like a tomato jungle towards the middle of the summer.

I think I need to be more aggressive about removing suckers. In the back of my mind I think I would get more tomatoes if I leave the plant bushy . I’ll try keeping a single main stem this year and see how it goes. Thanks.
jbcryder different techniques work better for different situations. Suckering to only one stem works well if you’re planting your tomatoes about 12” apart, but removing too much vegetation can also cause problems like sun scolding.
OMG your knowledge on gardening is amazing. I think you are either you grew up learning farming or you have a college degree in botany or something. I wish I knew how to garden like you!

This video is so helpful. I'm curious how large is your garden that you showed in that video? I saw in another video that the trellis beds were about 3ft apart but i was wondering how wide the larger beds for the bushing plants are?

I am using my new garden shed to start my seeds and grow my seedling. I have a wonderful south window and I want to know how much light each day do the seeds/seedling need? Same question for how much light do the seeds/seedlings need each day using the LED lighting method? I would like more info on the heating pad, temperature setting, length of time to use a heat pad. How do I know when to harden off a plants, is it age of plant of size? Do they start with indirect light for so many days and then sun? Thank you so much. I do enjoy your vidoes.

Thank you! That's a great question. raised beds are absolutely my preference but we are still in the design phase of this yard so I was not able to build permanent beds yet but needed to get a garden in. so this is just a temporary plot.
Thanks for asking and answering this question. I was wondering if you can expand on why you prefer raised (I’m assuming, framed) beds? I live on Oahu, zone 11a, with native clay soil. Debating raises beds considering drainage - I’d fill with my heavily amended clay soil, vs retaining moisture in the heat.
I also have nut sedge all over the yard. It’s not organic, but you might want to try sedgehammer when you are doing your initial tilling out of weeds on the rest of your property.

You’re very welcome! The tomato beds are about 18”. The other beds are about 4’
Don’t damage the root ball. It’s an old wives tale that you have to damage them like you do. They do fine without bothering them. By damaging them it can cause disease and shock the plants.
Do you have a plan to layout what plants go where in the rows?
I always learn something from your videos, but growing up in South Texas, I was always told tomatillos were in the gooseberry family, but only recently have seen them classified as nightshade. Interesting!

There are quite a few things that can cause a plants leaves to yellow. Yes, overwatering is one - how often are you watering? Often it’s also cases by a nutrient imbalance or nitrogen deficiency in the soil. There are also situations where you soil has plenty of nitrogen but the plants are unable to use it such as too much woody mater in the soil or a PH out of the optimal range. Yellow plant leaves are like a stomachache, there are a lot of potential causes but best to start at the most likely/simple fix and go from there.

Love your channel. New to gardening here... built a raised vegetable garden. For soil I mixed composted leaves/grass, raised veggie garden soil, and some native soil in equal parts. I thought adding some composted chicken manure to the mix would be good but then my neighbors and some boards on the internet are saying composted chicken manure can give you e.Coli poisoning and all types of other hazards if used in vegetable gardens (especially with root vegetables) . Can you help please 🙏🏼
Bed is only 4’x4’x10” so I can always swap out the soil as last resort
Alex Gmail hi Alex, that’s awesome that you’re getting into gardening! I know how frustrating and confusing it can be to read so much conflicting information when it comes to gardening. I’ll tell you that I add our chicken manure to our compost and I know many others who do and I’ve never experienced or heard of and food safety related issues associated with it. That said, I haven’t done enough research myself to tell you that there is no risk, so I won’t advise what you should do, just that I add compost chicken manure to our garden every season and will continue to do so for now.
Nice video! Do you prefer to always buy transplants? I noticed the only thing you planted from seed was beans. I started all my plants from seed this year and it was a ton of work!
Kaity Nickell thank you! I prefer to start all of my plants from seed as I did with 99% of these plants. I start most of them indoors under LED shop lights then transplant them outdoors. I have two videos on that if you are interested. I used that zucchini seedlings from the nursery as a demonstration, and there’s not wrong with most nursery seedlings but there are certainly a lot of advantages to starting as many from seed as you can. You’re right though, it is more work.
What are you sprinkling on bottom of root pack ? I assume that is fertilizer u toss in soil and hole ?

Right now the majority of my RUclips videos are focused on creating our new farmstead but I’m definitely planning a pepper pruning video etc. I do have more about that on my Instagram and there is a link to that in this video description. If you’re new to gardening I would worry too much about pinching off plants except for basil. Your basil will love you if you just keep doing what I showed in the video.
I pinch my pepper plants and can definitely tell the difference between the growth. I get a more bushier plant with stronger stems

Kyle, could you please share if you remove suckers of your tomato plants as they grow?
That really depends on how I trellis/support them. This year with my Florida weave system I did not sucker them. In the past with lower and lean I removed most suckers.
I see tubing on both sides of the plants, is that a drip system?
At 8:05 you said not to plant courgettes together, I have two plants in the same pot at the moment and wanting to plant them out but they're a climbing variety, should I still split them or could I just train them up the trellis separately?

Sam Stunts the reason to not plant them together is because they will try to compete for nutrients etc. and it’s not that they will die, or not produce, just that it’s very likely you’ll have a much better harvest from them if you can separate them. If you keep them together that’s ok.

Thanks for another great video Kyle! I planted some peppers yesterday and a few of the containers I got from the nursery looked like they had 2 plants in them, I tried to pull them apart but they didn’t seem to want to separate. I didn’t want to pull them too hard so I planted them together, but now I’m thinking should I either dig them back up, try separate again, or should I cut off one of the stalks? What do you think? I managed to get 4 zucchini’s out of 2 containers from the nursery though so thanks for the tip on that one!
Ben Robinson thank! I’m glad you enjoyed it! Sometimes they can become quite rootbound but I always separate them. With some you really need to take your tome and follow the base of the stem down and gently separate them. That’s what I would do, but you could also just snip one of them off at the base. Nice job with the squash!

Ben Robinson there’s some risk, but that’s what I would do. Just don’t do it in the heat of the day and they should be just fine.
Love all this information thank you! I've currently got a couple courgette plants that I'm keeping indoors until frost dates are over but it's getting big and I dont want it to go to seed too quick. Any advice? I've got about a week till it can go outdoors and I think I can see some flower buds. Should I pick them off or wait it out? Thanks!

Alicia's Animals I think courgette are what we would call zucchini here, and zucchini and all other squash blossoms as far as I know are delicious and edible.

I have an area underneath my peach tree, that gets shade for most of the day and maybe 1 to 1.5 hours of sun light a day. Do you have any recommendation on some veggies that i can plant under there that require little sunlight and shade this summer?
Some herbs like mint will be ok there. Just be sure the mint is I. A container so it won’t take over.

I got my garden plowed yesterday about the size of yours all I need to do is put up a fence to keep those little pesky rabbits out!
Will the rabbits burrow under the fence as well? We’re fortunate to have rabbits but do have tree squirrels and they are a pain!
Urban Farmstead were I live there are no squirrels but a lot of rabbits there’s also a cow pasture behind my house so I could go grab some compost whenever I need to get it!
Well hopefully the rabbit fence works out well. That’s awesome to have a compost hookup like that!

Dp Tech Reviews manure has mixed reviews and of course part of that is because there can be a lot of variables with it. I don’t personally use it but if I did, I would let it compost for at least a few months before using it.
Did you dig out the natural soil before adding the soil medium on top? I want to do a no dig bed and that’s what I thought yours was until you removed soil to plant the tomatoes etc. How many inches of planting soil or whatever kind of soil do you have to plant in. It looks like 6+ inches down? I have clay about 2 niches of top soil before hitting clay. Does your soil ever wash away after a rain? I’m very new & trying to think smarter & not work harder.
