The rule of thumb for all guitarists or bass players is;- What sounds great when you dial up a sound by yourself is often overkill in a live/band setting.
That must be why as a guitarist wanting to learn bass I bought a Dingwall n3, 6 string, Darkglass microtube and the Parralax plug-in. Tons of distortion. 😂

I feel like the bass was overpowering the guitars in the final mix. The bass tone itself was great and the dual tone set-up works well, but it sounded like the bass' levels were too high.
@@Buhhhhhh-xi4ju in a lot of genres you generally want the kick drum to be one of the loudest things in the mix, which is accomplished through EQ instead of turning up the volume. A lot of the time the kick is EQ’ed lower than the bass which sits just above in the mix, but adding in guitars which are extremely mid-heavy and generally more searched-for in the listening experiences of rock and metal ends up muddying the bass. Not enough low end or mid range unfortunately buries it but makes the band sound better as a whole, it does suck though because bass in a live setting is a completely different experience from listening to a lot of recordings

Listen to older more scooped metal albums and you can actually hear everything going on, take pantera for example, dimes tone was scooped nasty and mean but it really gets people going and you hear every note from all 4 guys. broad midrange doesn't really get people going because it's boring and vanilla. People want extreme sounds because they fit a more extreme emotional content better. Modern metal production gets really boring after 3 songs even if they're good. It doesn't get people going when you neuter the shit out of the bass for the sake of your mix sounding clean. Normies don't care about that shit at all, only other mix engineers give a damn about that and they arent your target audience anyway. Especially in a live environment if you arent pushing lots of depth and oomph then people lose interest. besides this is heavy metal, it's meant to be filthy and brutal sounding.

For years i wasnt found of the modern clanky bass tone, untill i tried it at rehearsal with the band. Turn the bass all the way up, and keep the volume low-ish, then youll always feel the bass, and when you hit a high note with attack, it just cuts right through. Best of both worlds imo

Simplifying things... What I did without splitting the signal was: Washburn RB2000 through a Sansamp RBI with drive pushed, got the clean signal out of it through a Peavey PVi 2500 on one channel, and the dirt signal connected to the other Peavey channel. From the power amp I drove the Bass/clean power output through a 15" cabinet, and the full/dirt power output through a 2×10" + horn cabinet. Just add more cabinets to your own taste...
Good description of the low/high separation. Watched a few of these vids and never truly understood why the low end was more of a DI and higher was the nasty gritty, makes more sense now. I would like to see a comparison of the mix with this tone vs just the bass through an amp/amp sim, I think that would clear up a lot of questions of why do this a lot of folks have.
Carlos Costa idk, the XT and X3 series were pretty solid, but the HD series is the exact opposite of ahead of the competition haha. they even sound worse than the aforementioned 2 older models, in some aspects. it’s more like the POD series began improving, and decided to take the piss and become the HD series for a while just to make the Helix seem that much better sounding.
No no no..... You were thinking of the Spider amp. Literally everything else they make sounds good but, they've made so many Spider amps that most people don't wont even LOOK at another Line 6 product.
The result is pretty good but I'm wondering why you didn't use the x-over split instead of A/B split and two dedicated low/high cuts. Saves DSP and space in the patch.
I don't have a Line 6. I have used a similar approach by using an Eden WT-600 for the low end of the spectrum with a good amount of compression and clean. I then use a Carvin Quad X preamp on channel 2 for the uncompressed highs. My bass has a ton of output with naturally overdrives the preamp with a "fuzzy" distortion. They are on separate channels and I mix/blend accordingly. The Tech 21 dUg Pinnick DP-3X pedal has this feature built in. That is an inexpensive option for those who gon'y have a Helix or something similar. Lastly, YOU ARE SO Correct in that separating the bass from the treble frequencies of the bass tone with clean compressed low frequencies and uncompressed and slightly fuzzed treble signals will cut through the fix so that one's bass playing can very easily be distinguished compared to traditional bass guitar EQing. Especially for guitar heavy music genres. You demo is on point!!!
I know im super late to the party lol but i noticed that parallel split EQ; you can actually split the signal on the signal line (i think the default is like A/B balance but you can change it to frequency) did some playing around with freq splitting with dual cabs
i had the Helix LT. Just bought the Quad Cortex. Game Changer. Traded a friend my Helix for an PRS S2 Custom 22 and some cash. Just had PRS 59/09 pickups put in it. I feel like it was a good trade. I always run my Bass clean with maybe a clean boost, EQ, and a compressor.
My personal favourite is to get an EBS Billy Sheehan signature drive and a Marshall RG-1. Put the RG-1 on your clean loop and tool about with the settings to suit your bass. For me, with a Yamaha BB425X on the bridge or neck pickup setting it has a really nice distorted tone and the RG-1 adds metric fucktonnes of depth to the lows and lower mids.
I really like this! I feel that every 'how to' videos are very subjective and is down to the style of which you or your band is playing. For this, this works...
Good video, been dialing in my heavier sound, did not follow the technique I used in the studio with my pedals. Need to pull the growl off of the low end, especially since I get it naturally from my bass pre-amp and amp.
I just lightly distort the whole signal. Pull out some of the lows before the crunch and then just add it back in after. Too much bass going into distortion sounds bad, but you don't have to split the signal like that to work around it.
The other problem is that you lose a ton of low end with most methods of distorting your tone - you can try and add it back in later, but you can end up boosting frequencies that aren't even there and just wind up with noise

I realize much of that is to taste, but what I'm getting at is really, would you want those effects to only be applied to the "high frequency" path, or to BOTH?
I run a similar setup on my axe-fx for bass but speaking from experience(used to run a sub-bass stingray) the massive humbuckers are almost too much output. It's hard to properly gain stage a sting ray for a gritty bass tone that still has that punchy thump. Passive bass pickups surprisingly work a lot better for that style in my experience. Precision/Jazz combo or Jazz would sound killer on that patch.
I don't know man. As soon as you removed the bass track towards the end of the video it became so much clearer in a good way. The bass tone was really making the whole mix sound very...cloudy? It sounds really heavy for sure, but if I had to ask someone to TAB that part out by ear, the low notes would be quite indistinguishable. The concept is great of course, but I think the high end needs to play a bit nicer with the guitars, especially with the drop A tuning. If the guitars are only in say, drop D or C, clarity in the low end is going to be less of an issue so I think you will get a little more room for your high end to color the mix. Food for thought.
Not a fan at all. Run one of the channels through a guitar amp sim for your distortion channel. Sounds way better IMO. Glen Fricker actually did an A/B comparison and the difference in night and day.
Tbh, when you said "clanky high-end" I thought like Periphery-level clanky, like "actually not that pleasant on its own"-clanky. What Nolly did on P3 is extreme, sure, but it fits so well and he gave bass an identity in the mix that goes beyond the support role. Also, the bass didn't really have that much fret noise. Many times, what people perceive as dirt is actually fret noise. Gives the tone a really nice percussive quality. Great demo! Maybe it's possible to do something close using multiband effects? I mean multiband distortion and multiband compressor. Of course those effects are very expensive as pedals.
I was following this to the letter a d was getting something close, until one block appeared on the top line of the signal chain and wasn't explained? Anyone know what he puts in? I'm close to getting this killer sound but think that last block is what I'm probably missing!

Yes, I use Darkglass stuff all the time and it's great. This method kind of does what the Darkglass does but with a little more flexibility. You can distort just the high end, but you can't siphon off the low end alone to compress it.
Great tone, but I'm pretty sure I got the same tone or better with a Squire jazz with Warwick BC10 amp and the incredible Source Audio Aftershock pedal, and don't forget the Rotosound strings (or D'addario NYXL).
Dude ever since I used the nyxl strings slinkies kinda sound like shit comparatively, the only problem is finding the nyxl in 5 string is virtually impossible without using reverb
First of all, this is nothing against your video, just my thoughts. ''It doesn't matter what bass sounds by itself, just how it sounds in the mix''. Personally, I only agree with the second half of this. There's many bands that have a really good bass tone by itself and that fit well into the mix. Examples would be the bass tones by Cannibal Corpse (Tomb, The Bleeding, Torture), Obscura, Beyond Creation, Death (Leprosy, ITP), Sadus, Pestilence (Testimony, Spheres), Athiest.... Just to name a few, I'm sure there's more I can't think of right now. Point being, you can find the middle ground if you want to. Unless you don't care for the bass as a stand alone instrument... If you just want the bass a support instrument, then everything you said applies.
I just ignored the comment because I was looking for a tone thats more for playing solo, but it's good to have a good bass tone that sits well in the mix. Personally, I don't like bass tones that sound like they're made just to sit well in the mix. The more memorable and distinct tones like Obscura's and Gorguts' are more fun to play with on their own and sound better in mixes and songs. It depends but I agree that his comment wasn't applicable to every situation.
Maybe it's just because I play a different genre of metal than this, but I've always found this sort of tone to be kinda lacking in terms of just pure physical crushing...ness compared to a more simple set up with just a Fuzz and a Comp and a decent amp. Sounds good, tho.
What about a bass tone similar to Knocked Loose and a few other modern metal bands where the bass sounds more boomy and subby but still ball crushingly heavy instead of fuzzy sounding to where it just sounds muddy.
Never forget to be a bass player! Loading up on EFX is cool, but you DO have a job to fulfill! Otherwise the band sound can become a mush of battling fuzz boxes!

This way you can dial in the low and high end independently and have them overlap. I think the cross over split can’t do that.

I run a similar setup on my axe-fx for bass but speaking from experience(used to run a sub-bass stingray) the massive humbuckers are almost too much output. It's hard to properly gain stage a sting ray for a gritty bass tone that still has that punchy thump. Passive bass pickups surprisingly work a lot better for that style in my experience. Precision/Jazz combo or Jazz would sound killer on that patch.
I don't know man. As soon as you removed the bass track towards the end of the video it became so much clearer in a good way. The bass tone was really making the whole mix sound very...cloudy? It sounds really heavy for sure, but if I had to ask someone to TAB that part out by ear, the low notes would be quite indistinguishable. The concept is great of course, but I think the high end needs to play a bit nicer with the guitars, especially with the drop A tuning. If the guitars are only in say, drop D or C, clarity in the low end is going to be less of an issue so I think you will get a little more room for your high end to color the mix. Food for thought.

I like to run the obsidian(darkglass b7k model) it doesn’t require most of the tweaking you had to do. You ended up with a great tone though.

Not a fan at all. Run one of the channels through a guitar amp sim for your distortion channel. Sounds way better IMO. Glen Fricker actually did an A/B comparison and the difference in night and day.
Yeah you can do that too. I've done that quite a bit, Marshall type sounds work really good but I wanted something a little more terrifying for this.
Tbh, when you said "clanky high-end" I thought like Periphery-level clanky, like "actually not that pleasant on its own"-clanky. What Nolly did on P3 is extreme, sure, but it fits so well and he gave bass an identity in the mix that goes beyond the support role. Also, the bass didn't really have that much fret noise. Many times, what people perceive as dirt is actually fret noise. Gives the tone a really nice percussive quality.

Great demo! Maybe it's possible to do something close using multiband effects? I mean multiband distortion and multiband compressor. Of course those effects are very expensive as pedals.

Yes, I use Darkglass stuff all the time and it's great. This method kind of does what the Darkglass does but with a little more flexibility. You can distort just the high end, but you can't siphon off the low end alone to compress it.

Great tone, but I'm pretty sure I got the same tone or better with a Squire jazz with Warwick BC10 amp and the incredible Source Audio Aftershock pedal, and don't forget the Rotosound strings (or D'addario NYXL).
Dude ever since I used the nyxl strings slinkies kinda sound like shit comparatively, the only problem is finding the nyxl in 5 string is virtually impossible without using reverb

First of all, this is nothing against your video, just my thoughts. ''It doesn't matter what bass sounds by itself, just how it sounds in the mix''. Personally, I only agree with the second half of this. There's many bands that have a really good bass tone by itself and that fit well into the mix. Examples would be the bass tones by Cannibal Corpse (Tomb, The Bleeding, Torture), Obscura, Beyond Creation, Death (Leprosy, ITP), Sadus, Pestilence (Testimony, Spheres), Athiest.... Just to name a few, I'm sure there's more I can't think of right now. Point being, you can find the middle ground if you want to. Unless you don't care for the bass as a stand alone instrument... If you just want the bass a support instrument, then everything you said applies.
I just ignored the comment because I was looking for a tone thats more for playing solo, but it's good to have a good bass tone that sits well in the mix. Personally, I don't like bass tones that sound like they're made just to sit well in the mix. The more memorable and distinct tones like Obscura's and Gorguts' are more fun to play with on their own and sound better in mixes and songs. It depends but I agree that his comment wasn't applicable to every situation.

Maybe it's just because I play a different genre of metal than this, but I've always found this sort of tone to be kinda lacking in terms of just pure physical crushing...ness compared to a more simple set up with just a Fuzz and a Comp and a decent amp. Sounds good, tho.

What about a bass tone similar to Knocked Loose and a few other modern metal bands where the bass sounds more boomy and subby but still ball crushingly heavy instead of fuzzy sounding to where it just sounds muddy.

I think it does matter that it sounds pretty good on its own. Yeah it needs to suit the mix and stuff, but, y'know, you can have both.
