Did you know the singular form of graffiti is graffito? I did, but I decided it would be much less effort to simply go along with the masses.
I'm a graphic designer - so I look at things differently compared to a few years ago. One day I stopped and really thought about the graffiti in this game, and thought it was an awesome opportunity to explore my newfound skills. Half-Life 2's graffiti requires a little decoding. Hope you enjoy my take on it :)

The electrical symbol for a resistor representing the resistance is actually genius, considering most goldsource half-life games are named after physics and engineering terms, such as: half-life, decay (radioactivity) blue shift (Electromagnetic field phenomenon) opposing force (mechanics)...

I always thought Opposing Force referred to the fact that in normal Half Life the HECU is represented as the enemy, like how in military training scenarios the “Opposing Force” is the enemy, thus in Opposing Force you play as… the HECU, who was the enemy.
Though opposing force in mechanics could also work :P

I always interpreted the combine-human-monkey graffiti as a comparison. Regular human in the middle with 2 options by the side. Artist's focus on the muscle structure makes me think it's a comparison that's meant to show the "un-augumented people" that we have more to do with apes than we do with combine.
This is a really cool idea. I think because I read this as “evolution” it kind of affected my ability to see it any other way. This totally changes how I think about it, and for that I am very grateful :D

about a born graffiti and man holding the baby, one of strongest themes in the game is suppression field that stops people from being able to concept babies
The model this graffiti is based on implies that this graffiti was created by Valve during a point of development where there was no suppression field and the combine used children as slaves. I wrote this under the impression that this would have been the artist’s intent from that perspective
I might be wrong on this, I might be right, but I hope this at least explains why I said what I did. Thanks for watching :)

@@LeanifyTV You're right, when I first played it and saw it, that was the first thing to mine. The graffiti itself felt like an artist attempting to vent off their frustration of probably wanting to have children but are unable because of the COMBINE. You can interpret the child the citizen is wielding could be how they see many citizens clinging onto the baby dolls you see throughout the game, a way to fantasize the idea of having a child with them again.
Or I don't know, that graffiti always fascinated me when I first saw it in the game.
one think i noticed was that the graffiti with the 3 heads might be a reference to older art that was comparing the facial features of different human races. Not endorsing the message of that, This graffiti might actually be stating that to be a combine soldier would be more of an evolutionary regression.
Yeah, this is what I think. I’m pretty sure it could be based on some racist anti-black and Irish stuff from way back, but I wasn’t totally sure so I didn’t wanna risk it lol
i always thought it was saying that the combine arent human and are like zen aliens or smth. i also thought it was saying the combine are just really smart apes

I can see that. Just like a human is no longer a mere ape, so too are the Combine soldiers no longer human, they've relinquished their humanity. This would fly directly in the face of what Breen says about the Combine being humanity's next step. He paints it as an evolution to the masses, and to the soldiers at Nova Prospekt he tells them that they alone will be saved as the best of the species while the remainder is culled. In truth, its as the art says: a regression into oblivion. Even what Breen tells the soldiers isn't entirely true, they'll be mere templates for synths, no different than the striders and gunships. In time, all of the Overwatch forces would be completely replaced as they died out, and in their place would be unthinking clones who know nothing of humanity, only being tools for further savage conquests and extinctions for the Combine.
I think the important bit of "combine - human - ape" graffiti is the emphasis on anatomy and how the combine head was portrayed with the mask now being the skin with the fleshy bits crammed underneath complete with mechanical parts as a way to "dehumanise" the combine
I actually made this point in the original script, but I worried that it went on for too long so I cut it. Dumb move I guess lmao
The topographical art style really brings home the foundational, irreconcilable differences between humans and what some have become. It almost meets the combine on their terms, viewing the depicted as specimens or something. They see us as the sum of our parts, so we’re turning the mirror on them.

also the caste thing could also mean chastity? as in the half-life universe the combine started installing suppression fields to keep humanity from reproducing and the humanoid holding vould reference humanity being stripped off that as in a "look what they took from us" message or something like that

I think this graffiti predates the suppression field as a part of the narrative iirc - if this is indeed supposed to be a gas mask citizen, we might be in the child slave era of the HL2 beta, which might be even worse than babies simply not being born

I always interpreted it as desperately clinging onto the remaining humanity you have before you spiral into complete cynicism

When I first saw the oranges and lemons graffiti, my first thought was that it was a reference to 1984. “Oranges and lemons” is this really old nursery rhyme that was sorta a recurring theme in the book. People only remember fragments of it, but Winston is fascinated by it as a little barely surviving piece of pre-dystopian culture.
In the context of HL2 and the graffiti, when I first saw it I thought “oh, I get it, it’s a multi-level representation of everything the combine is destroying: the innocence of a nursery rhyme, the churches referenced in the rhyme, the simple joy of fresh fruit, and of course the children that would be singing the rhyme if any were left.”
And then I found out the designer said “nah, it was actually an inside joke about my vegetarian girlfriend”

I always interpreted Born as representing humanity. You were born. The arm grasping at the resistance, at freedom, the only remaining truly human thing. Representative of the human spirit. Humans are born to yearn for these things

4:27 judging by the lore, that graffiti is more reffering to the loss of young generation that will never return, since in half life2, the combine set a "Suppression field" against human reproduction, alongside the extermination of all the children in the series. So that might make am appeal to the suffering of the people and the pain in the forced consripted combine, who are like lifeless robots who lost their humanity, and their families
I really do love this idea - And I am actually on the same page as you. However, a thing I forgot to mention is that since the graffiti is based on an older citizen or conscript model, this would have been made before Valve wrote the suppression field in, back when children were being raised as slaves. Now I might be wrong on this, but I hope this explanation explains why I thought that way

Valve is really good at remembering the importance of humanity and the authenticity that can be achieved from showcasing the mundane and the human in their work - even in games where humans don’t appear! These games were ahead of their time.
Everything is authenticity crazy now, and companies are trying their best to inject it into everything they do, often failing. This graffiti is just one example of it going right, I think.
And thanks so much! It took around 5x longer to make than my previous stuff but seeing so many new people discovering it makes it all worth it :)

The lat one is also a literary reference to George Orwells "1984' which Half Life 2 draws a lot of inspiration from.
The fingertips also has the connotation with crime - when you are arrested and the cops put your finger tips, a unique identification of you specifically, into their database.

I see the "Civil Protection unit, man, and ape" poster as a comparison of the three. You can see the CP unit's mind is plagued with various technologies, and his being is barely human - and furthermore, barely ape.

this was incredibly well made with quite a funny way of editing, I have to say I'd have never expected some of the meaning of them and just remembering each time I saw them in game and the feeling they gave me, it just makes so much sense, it's insane how much a a drawing on a wall can say about how people are thinking and living, just the umbrella man one shock me by how you can interpret it like this, truly fascinating ! anyway can't wait to see more like this !
I never actually thought about the meaning behind graffiti you can see in Half-Life. I usually thought that they were graffiti already spray painted before the 7 Hour war and they stood on walls as the last pieces of art humans were able to express. Except for a few other graffiti that I thought was dev signatures left as easter eggs.

I feel like some part of the Graffiti is from way before the invasion, and therefore just has the function of breaking up a large visually similar area, and make the place feel more like more people used to live there, kinda like all the boarded up houses and such

I think the way the lambda symbol looks like a hand holding a crowbar the wrong way, symbolises that the resistance is there for doing the work and support leading to Gordon's return as a catalyst. Like setting up bases across city 17 so that Gordon can escape through the safest possible routes, rather than struggling to go through the city. In a way they are saying "We've done the dirty work and preparations" and are passing the torch (crowbar) to Gordon,
the one free man who still remembers the days before the combine and can't be tempted due to him not experiencing the misery and defeat most of the resistance has until that point. I mean even the vorts know that Gordon is the one who will ultimately take their combined effort and destroy the combine's regime ,way before the events of hl2 (hla even).
I really enjoy finding smaller channels like this.

You infact can just contact Valve employees, their E-mails are open to public, especially Gaben's. It's quite a low chance they'll respond, but they do answer to questions about niche subjects about their games, some background on it, it's development and possible lore answers.
I know this might sound like the biggest bullshit ever, but one of my friends once got gaben to call him a good boy from an email

As per the evolution graffito, i do think there was no intension of being backwards, thought it is a very interesting interpretation i had not considered. The thing is, the left to right direction of writing is not universal, there are a lot of writing systems that use different directions
Good point - a bit eurocentric of me perhaps! (Though I did acknowledge this a little in my manga joke) But it makes me wonder, if everything else in this game follows the left to right rule, why would it be the only thing to be backwards like that?
Additionally, why would the resistance want to imply that becoming combine is the next step? That just makes the combine look good imo
@@LeanifyTV I heard somewhere that Valve planned for there to be accented lines of dialog for the resistance and citizen NPCs, but that idea got scrapped. Maybe this is the remnants of this idea? After all, the graffiti you cover is both Cyrillic and Latin, and images are universal.
I always misinterpreted the graffiti with the figure holding the baby as something else. I thought "caste" was another spelling for "chaste" and the graffiti was meant to represent something like the last human born before the Combine activated the suppression field and it had something to do with the suppression field given the meaning of the word "chaste".
Very nice video, the graffiti in HL2 was always something I'd stop by to look at if the game allowed it, much like the saferoom writings in the L4D games. Very cool interpretations!

epic analysis, i have always been amazed by the graffiti in half life
The Matt Wood graffiti also has a reference to 1984, in which two of the characters fail to remember a common british nursery rhyme about oranges and lemons. So the bombs dropping on them imply the artist wants others to remember basic pleasures before the Combine destroys them
I really like the born. graffiti, its so powerful for me in its simplicity
For real, it’s the complete opposite of the combine - natural form, soft lines and human handwriting. It does exactly what it needed to do
The fingerprint graffiti was always my favorite. The element of a fingerprint - a symbol of individuality. Every person has a different fingerprint pattern, which makes us unique, and a Resistance rebel individual. This theory implies the individualism of every single rebel, whereas Combine is a collective faceless army, a hive, so to speak.
And the lambda symbol stamped directly in the centre of that fingerprint pattern means that no matter who we are, everything that makes us individual, makes us motivated to fight back against the oppression of the Combine.
The Lambda could as well have and opposite meaning. The sign is disrupting the entire pattern of that fingerprint; in turn meaning that one must abondon their individual identity and fight for the global community as a one big unified collective and mutual force against the Combine.
If you pay attention to how the graffiti changes during your playthrough, you'll notice more Eastern European style graffiti during the beginning, but nearing half-way through to late game you'll notice "fresher" graffiti that the resistance use to inspire others to join in and to mock the combine.

Although I prefer HL1, HL2's worldbuilding and political themes are some of my favorite in all of gaming. It does such a great job at depicting how dehumanizing regimes are to their people. How in order to be better off you must give up your humanity (love, empathy, community, etc.) and the natural resistance many have to doing so. The graffiti shows off the wants, fears, oppression, and hopes of the humans in this world. It's also such a smart tie in to the themes of forces beyond your understanding dictating your life from HL1 because what is a police state or invading occupying force to oppressed people if not exactly that? And what is the natural response to that cruelty? Hope and resistance.
The resistance does know about the Gman. You can see him talking to Odessa Cubbage, plus he's the one who gave Kleiner the HEV suit.
I think the umbrella guy is a commentary on capitalism. While it rains, he's wearing a tie, which is symbolic of a leash. Selling his soul has given him the money to afford an umbrella; everyone else has to just deal with the rain. This may be criticizing collaborators for selling their freedom for comfort.

Thanks for watching! Glad you enjoyed. I did actually cut a few pieces from the video to keep it nice and concise, as it’s my first proper video in like 4 years.
Unfortunately most of the other graffiti in the game have little, if anything, to analyse. Most of them are generic (and labelled differently in the game files to denote this) and there more as filler. Others are just assortments of letters that aren’t really supposed to have any meaning.
The fun facts at the end mainly go over the sort of inbetween category of graffiti that doesn’t hold the same meaning as the “main” pieces but has something interesting to mention, and virtually everything else is just stuff like tags or obvious stuff like an image of Breen with “resist” underneath

and what interesting is that this is actually a poster,and those are probably torn away by the combines on sight. So for me it only makes sense that those posters were made and placed as soon as Freeman appeared

As a kid the 'born.' graffiti always looked like the Lambda was bulging out of the hand to me, rather than a medallion being held up. Always interpreted it as it trying to convey that Resistance is natural, and can be born from everyone
my personal theory about the combine to monkey graffiti is that the man in the middle is meant to represent how combine soldiers are meant to be "the next step of evolution" while the monkey is meant to be "the beginning". the guy in the middle is just that, a guy in the middle. the middle of evolution.
Another thought I had about the CASTE graffiti is the fact that a child is even present in it at all. The game heavily implies that no child has even been born in around 2 decades, meaning the youngest human alive should be about 20 years old. This could mean that this artwork was made during the early years of the Combine’s regime.. or it could be nostalgic for a time when people still had youth? Maybe hopeful for a future where the suppression field is deactivated? Dr. Breen implies that if humanity is “good enough” the Combine may willingly allow them to breed again.
Just another aspect of that artwork that makes it all the more interesting. I love the lore of this game.
It could also be suggesting that a new promise is born, in the reign of combine, and that this will bring about a new time for the resistance and humanity in general. Interestingly I also believe that this was created during the beta and there was no suppression field, and the combine were enslaving the children.
The "born" one probably means "Born To Resist" almost like a reference to "Born to kill"
I love that interpretation of the combine-human-ape graffiti. I always just interpreted it as the Combine's idea of evolution, seeing themselves as the next step up from humans in the same way that humans are an evolved form of apes. I assumed the reason it was from left to right instead of right to left with the ape and the Combine swapped was because they must have read from right to left, similar to certain human languages like Hebrew and Arabic. But the idea that it's actually a human saying they'd rather devolve back into being an animal than submit to the Combine's rule is a really cool view on it that I love.

I wouldn’t say that is the main theme since the combine are specifically invoked, but if it is indeed an AnPrim “return to monkey” type meme, a revulsion to technology would definitely come under that!

The way I interpret the graffiti with the three heads is that it's meant to convey a message of the combine soldiers being further distanced from the average human than the average human is to an ape, basically saying that those combine soldiers have become utterly inhuman.
I think the Born graffiti means "Born free" since the lambda symbol in a way means freedom

Yeah, I always thought it was a combine soldier. Especially because it's seen in city 17 around where a lot of them are. It made me a bit confused when I played HL2, wondering what it meant (which actually makes it a bit more interesting).
The umbrella man is G man. The widows peak hairline, the suit and tie, the dark slender figure, and the eyes staring. I’m not sure what the umbrella is supposed to symbolize.
I think the CASTE gravity is about and made by a Civil protection officer. We know a lot of Combine cp’s joined up to prevent their family being separated or killed. The figure is a Civil protection officer who has ascended to a higher caste, holding his infant son of a lower non combine cast.

The first time I saw it was next to a rebel's body with some barebones supplies near a combine camp (highway 17 I believe). I just assumed the combine came along, shot the rebel (who had been hiding/surviving there) and set up camp.
I’m surprised he never mentioned the “Interloper” ARG when he went over the umbrella man graffiti.

I thought the monkey one was a hierarchy made by a combine soldier. First is the combine, then humanity, then animals
I like to think of the born graffiti as
Humanity being born again in the form of the resistance
Odessa knew about gman and he is one of resistance member, so ambrella guy is a gman
Also, in the game almost everyone helping Gordon, die after he leaves them, which might be via gman interactions
I figured this was a sort of secret thing. If the whole resistance knew about Gman I thought it would come up before the moment with Alyx and Eli. The fact that Eli specifically waited until he and Gordon were alone and was secretive about it and somehow knew Gordon was being “visited” by him too never really gave me the impression that Gman was a known thing among the resistance at large.
I might be wrong, I guess it’s difficult to know. But I just wanted to explain my rationale anyway. Thanks for watching and leaving your thoughts :)
@@LeanifyTV gman is an entity what can manipulate time and space, basically, only those who are valuable for gman can know/talk to him, as he finds them usefull for his interest.
I think that graffity just meant to be a reminder what Gordon is still being watched by gman also

Gman being the umbrella man isn't far fetched. It's possible other people have seen him, or only Gordon sees the graffiti to remind him of his work. Or he just like Rihanna idk
cool video, i never thought about the graffiti's too much in this game, you might want to change your microphone or filter the sound tho, i can hear the noise.

I’m still working on my sound haha as I’ve had to downgrade my audio setup due to life reasons and now I record with a not so great microphone that I have to hold in my hand as I don’t even have a desk lol. I will try my best to make the next video audio better!

@@Niklas1611 A combination of things. I was depressed in a way thankfully I’d never been since, got too many views before I was old enough to not feel overwhelmed by it, had to start uni so I had no income for a while and lots of expenses and couldn’t really upload with the terrible wifi and such. Now, from taking a creative degree and applying my YT skills to real world work, it just feels different, in a really good way.
