I saw repairs like this being carried out whilst travelling India. These guys have 'Old School' skills that keep these trucks on the road and running, out of necessity. They don't have heaps of money to throw at new parts, or new trucks, just do what it takes to keep the old girl running. True, there's jack shit safety most of the time, but at least these guys had a welding shield to use! The repairs ain't pretty, the equipment ain't new and shiny, but it works well enough to get the job done, and I respect their skills applied.

      Not true….
At the start you can clearly see the oil on the pavement spilled from the axle!!
And towards the end you can see how the axle is filled with oil.
These guys KNOW they don’t do everything the way it is ‘officially’ done but they are not stupid; they know that without oil all rotating parts in that axle would be toast within 20 minutes of driving (quite opposite to the housing as you suggest….)
I have worked for years (‘89 to ‘97) in places like Madagascar, Mauretania, Nigeria and Lybia, and I have met some UNBELIEVABLY skilled people!!
I met a 19 year old boy that repaired the automatic transmission of a Chevrolet Blazer: the only automatic transmission in town, the only American car in town, no parts and no documentation….
He dismantled the entire transmission to the last bit (did I mention he had no special tools either??) studied carefully everything he found and made everything he deemed absolete himself in the workshop of his father…..
The car drove for years after he completed his work…..

The craziest thing is you're never find any mechanics in the UK willing to do what they do on the side of the road it's wild how fast they are fixing things🤔🤔🤔

As a CDL driver, I'm almost jealous they don't have to deal with some of the crap the DOT does to U.S.A. drivers. Wonder what it's like no weight stations, no inspection blitz, no being pulled over for 6 mph over speed limit, no putting me out of service for chaffing OEM hoses by design, no bothering me about personal convenience when it's justified, etc, etc, etc....

I love the can fix it ethos of these guys. I understand, these lorries are very OLD and spares are non existant.
so if they break it they have to repair it, usually over and over again. Casting a new brake drum was very impressive.
