At the Paris Peace Conference held after World War I in 1919, Japan proposed to include a clause on the abolition of racial discrimination in the Covenant of the League of Nations, but it was rejected. This is considered the first time that racial equality was advocated at an international conference. It is said that refugees fleeing Jewish persecution were allowed to pass through Manchukuo, and it was called the ``Higuchi Route.'' This marvelous story is kind of near and dear to me. It is pertinent to me, I guess because of the Latvian connection. Here's the story: One of the Latvian Jews who didn't die, helped many others to escape to the Far East and I believe, after doing much research some years ago, that he was a forbear of my family, on my paternal grandmother's side. His name was Leo Hanin, and he helped a lot of Jews escape from Latvia to the Far East. My father had talked of some European relatives he had met when he was a small boy, noting that their language didn't sound Russian, or even Polish. He wasn't sure what it was, and then, out of the blue, back in the 90s I found out that we had Latvian family members. In the meantime, my parents' families had found themselves in Singapore (my dad's mother's side by way of Calcutta, India, ostensibly from Europe) and we're interned by the Japanese. There was a young officer there who befriended my mother's family and kept them out of the concentration camp as long as he could. This man was also very soft-hearted and never hurt anyone under his command - not Jews, not Chinese, not Indians or Malays or Eurasians or any other race. His name was Hirowaki, from what my mother told me and, from a photograph he had given her. So I don't know his surname. Hirowaki was eventually removed from his post and sent back home to Japan, because he was deemed ineffective as he was found "too lenient." He had managed to keep my mother's family and other Jews under his area command, out of the concentration camp. They were sent there immediately after Hiro was sent back to Japan, just over six months before the Pacific War ended. At any rate, Japan had lost the war and sometime in the mid 50s, Hirowaki had returned to Singapore on a business trip and looked up my mothers family. My aunt had happened to marry a man with the same last name, so when he looked them up in the phone directory, my aunt, who had the same last name as before, was easily reached. Eventually, he came to our home for dinner and at dinner, told us what had happened and why he had suddenly disappeared during the war. He showed us pictures of his young family. He was then a promoter for the world famous ice skating show, Holiday on Ice. He told us that for the rest of the war he had a desk job, but assured us with all his heart, that he had never commanded one person at all on the island, to ever be arrested, or tortured, or sentenced to death. It was very important to him that we knew and understood that. He was a perfect gentleman in speech, dress, and behavior. A very gentle man. Exactly as my mother had described him. I still remember him well. One day, while in the concentration camps, my mother's family were asked to dig graves. When people were told that, it was a sure sign that they were going to be executed, either by being shot and thrown in the grave or being buried alive. Obviously, everybody was really scared and never slept the entire night, dreading rollcall at 5:30 in the morning. However, at 5:30 to their great surprise, there was no rollcall. Nor at 6.00 or 6:30 am. Nothing. Silence. One of my aunts, who was the hut captain, peeked out the window and the sight was so unbelievable, she motioned to everybody to come and see for themselves, through the wooden slats. What they saw was, Japanese soldiers sitting on the strip of ground between the women's camps and the men's camps, just smoking cigarettes and chatting. Beyond them in the men's camp, the guys were just walking around casually, each with a sort of handkerchief in their hands. My mother said they knew then that unbelievably, the war was actually over. By 11.30 that morning, the Red Cross had arrived with medicines and chocolate. So I really like to think that it is because of Leo Hanin, Hirowaki and God, that I am here today. ❤

Mr Sugihara is the Righteous Among Nations.
Amazing story. Thanks for sharing it !
🙂 thank you
A Japanese captain was the only one who took refugees onboard his ship while tenths of European and American ships were just watching Smyrna in flames and Greeks getting slautered... you've gotta give them some credit to the Japanese people... the code of honor they have [Bushido] runs in their vanes still...
Bushido has its own cons but we cannot ignore its pros. There are japanese soldiers who were against cruelty and inhumane treatment.
Some time ago Izzyrel quietly razed down the little grove of trees planted in Sugihara's honor (a fact his son discovered on a visit to his father's Memorial) to make space for condominiums.
And recent articles in Izzyreli publications imply his role in selfless saving Jewish lives "have been at best exaggerated".
Sugihara was amazing.
I was hoping for him to still be alive but this kind hearted man died in 1986. I wanted to kiss his hand as a token of my gratitude for what he has done for the Jewish people. He has a special place in heaven prepared By Almighty God. My tears doesn't seem to stop. Hallelujah amen
RIP 🙏🙏🙏🙏
Humanity can come from unexpected places. 😊
Respect 🙏
Righteous among the nations.
Tuskegee Air men saved many from Germany too. Good men, both
Omg, stories like this always make me cry like a baby. May Father Yehovah keep beautiful souls like his 🙏
❤❤God bless him and his family
It's a great job of what these people have done. I've even seen you put in one of the titles, the Oscar Schindler of Asia, but yet you still haven't done a video and pay respects to him. I know there's been a movie about him, but there have to be things they have left out like his early life and after the war. Plz think about it
He’s on our list for next year ;)
What is the title of the movie?
@@mariateresabucala5107 Schindlers list
@UNPACKED thank you I've been asking all year I thought it was because I disagree with some of the things on here but it's the government of isrl not the people
@mariateresabucala5107 Schindlers list is the movie sad but a good movie too he was a hero for sure
There are always people who choose to do the right thing regardless of circumstances they are in. But I still want my country to teach national what exactly happened during WW2, so that we won't repeat horrible mistakes. There are a lot of people still justify Imperial Japan and the leader as an innocent man.
This marvelous story is kind of near and dear to me. It is pertinent to me, I guess because of the Latvian connection. Here's the story:
One of the Latvian Jews who didn't die, helped many others to escape to the Far East and I believe, after doing much research some years ago, that he was a forbear of my family, on my paternal grandmother's side.
It is amazing how God moves to preserve His people. God bless the family of those instruments. Touching stories from UNPACKED. ❤❤❤...SHALOM!!!!
Where's your appreciation of the late Abdol Hossein Sardari, the Iranian diplomat in Paris who helped saved THOUSANDS of Jews from the Nazis during World War II?
An HONEST MAN
Greatness is measured in deed, this Japanese diplomat is this person.
Thank you
Love jews love nippon too
His soul is blessed in Heaven
I read a book about this guy when I was in 7th grade just for fun. It was from the point of view of Mr. Sugihara’s daughter
Unpacked should do the story of the "fugu plan"
Very kind of him, but so sad japanese government massacred and committed atrocious vulgar war crimes against koreans, chinese, indo- and philippino people heartlessly. Grateful for the few who defy inhumane governemnt regimes,
